May 3, 2020 Fourth Sunday of Easter�
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS.�
All of us have a vocation!!!!�
�
We pray today that each one of us claims the vocation, the call we receive from God. God calls
each of us to witness to His love in this world. All of us have a vocational story to discern. Yet,
discerning God’s call in our culture is a bit of a challenge. �
�
What are the voices that help us discern God’s call, and what are the voices that prevent us from
recognizing the voice of Jesus the Good Shepherd of our lives? May our prayer be that we seek
the grace of the Good Shepherd. May we look into our hearts and judge our generosity of service to the people
around us. Each of us is called to lead others to the gracious mercy of God. Like the shepherds, we do not do this
by herding or forcing people along. We seek to live lives of such self�evident joy that others can trust that we are
leading them in the path of life eternal. Jesus, our Good Shepherd, give us the grace we need to gently lead others
to become more aware of our love and of God’s love for them.�
�
As we celebrate this World Day of Prayer for Vocations, may we encourage some young men in our parish �
community to consider the call to the ordained priesthood. For Father Bob Kreckel, Father Jeff Chichester and
myself, our lives have been greatly blessed by the privilege of serving our faith community as priests. We would
be honored to help you discern God’s call in your life.�
�
In discerning how God is calling you in your life, we have many faith�filled witnesses in our parish community.
We are grateful for the ministry of our parish permanent deacons, and we very much invite you to consider the �
diaconal call in your life. We are grateful for our vowed religious men and women who live out their lives in the
service of the Church. Could this be your call as well? We are grateful for the talented and generous lay ecclesial
ministers in our parish community that are an essential lifeblood to our parish ministries. We very much �
encourage you to pray over the call to lay ecclesial ministry.�
�
In our parish life, we are grateful for parishioners who have responded to the call of God to be catechists, to be �
involved in youth ministry, in ChristLife, in Penfield Hope, to engage in liturgical ministry, pastoral care, social
outreach, and parish governance. These are beautiful and needed and faith�filled ways to live out your vocation to
serve in the Church. We are grateful for those who already serve, and we invite you as well to discern the way or
ways the Lord is calling you to live out your vocation.�
�
This I know, God calls every baptized member of this community to discern how you are to respond to the call of
God in your life. In some way, the Lord wishes to invite you to lead others to the gracious mercy of God. For
sure, we begin with our families � as a mom, as a dad, as a sibling. Further, as a faith community, we are called to
share the giftedness God has given us in the service of one another.�

SPIRITUAL �
COMMUNION�
�
How can we make sense of the absence of ‘public
worship’ and not being able to receive the ‘body,
blood, soul and divinity of our Lord’? �
�
As Catholics we consider the reception of the �
Eucharist as our deepest way to encounter the Risen
Lord and as food for our souls. The Mass we celebrate
is the source and summit of everything we are and
hope to be as baptized Christians. �
�
These days of quarantine and separation keeps us from
receiving communion in the usual liturgical way, but it
doesn’t keep God from showering grace and mercy on
us. We are no less loved and saved by God and we �
remain united in faith. �
�
The Catechism of the Catholic Church says of us:
“Through their desire for the sacrament in union with
the Church, no matter how distant they may be �
physically, they are intimately and really united to her
and therefore receive the fruits of the sacrament.”�
�
Bread and wine are taken, blessed, broken and given.�
Christ is present: body, blood, soul and divinity.�
�
Spiritual Communion isn’t a lesser substitute for the
Eucharist; it is the GOAL of the Eucharist. We are
currently using one of the more popular acts of �
spiritual communion comes from St. Alphonsus �
Liguori (1696�1787):�
�
“My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most
Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things and I
desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now
receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually
into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already
there, and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me
to be separated from you. Amen.”�

Knowing that we cannot gather as we would like to during the pandemic restrictions, staff �
members at both parishes have been compiling images, of our parish grounds, worship space, �
liturgies, and families worshipping at home. Here are some of those images�we hope they bring
you comfort just as it comforts our priests, deacons, and staff to know you are praying with us �

PANDEMIC AND POST�PANDEMIC MINISTRY�
REPORT TO JOINT PARISH COUNCIL�
�
In preparation for the Joint Parish Council meeting via Zoom earlier this week, we read an article titled, “Prepare
Now for Post�Pandemic Ministry,” and looked at where we are relative to the recommendations of the author and
church leaders quoted. Here is some of what we looked at.�
�
“… Now is the time to communicate more with your people not less with your people…�
In a crisis situation, people look to their leaders for hope, and the church can be one of those voices, �
probably the strongest voice.” �

“This moment in crisis needs to be approached not as a short�term problem, but as a moment in which really
smart strategic decisions about the future have been put off for a long time now need to made.” The focus must
be on the future so that when lockdowns end, parishioners realize the church remains vibrant and that the role of
the laity in building the community of faith is more important than ever.” �

WHAT WE ARE DOING:�

Holy Spirit and St. Joseph’s fielded a survey for feedback on online participation in the Holy Mass and other
prayer opportunities. This survey is still available and we welcome your participation at:�

Preliminary survey takeaways with 193 participants as of April 27�
�� 93% have participated in online Masses�
�� 66% highly satisfied; 25% somewhat satisfied�
�� 72% noted online streaming as one of our most useful forms of
communication; 69% online bulletin; 64% parish email; 62% video updates�
�
Most common themes of the comments:�
�
“There is something so poignant and spirit lifting to be with the 6 or so priests and staff virtually in an empty
church. It isn’t really empty � it is filled with the Holy Spirit and so full of love and support. You guys are doing a
beautiful job. The readings are well spoken, the homilists are outdoing themselves and the hymns that Nancy
leads make us feel like active participants. The personal spiritual impact of our parish live streaming’s is so much
greater than anonymous TV masses.”�
�
�� Thank you, thank you, thank you�
�� Bringing Mass into the home is so comforting�
�� We participate as a family; we invite extended family�
�� I feel connected�
�� Especially enjoy the Rosary; thank you for posting it so I can pray later or next morning�
�� Occasional technical or hearing issues; sound could be better; there are other churches to switch to�
�� Wish there was an online Mass from Holy Spirit�
�� Leave the online donation slides on for less time�
�� I miss the Eucharist but making a “Spiritual Communion” has been meaningful�
�� Miss our interaction with each other � can we do more virtual activities?�
�� The words on the screen are helpful; I do not like the words on the screen�they block what’s happening at
the altar�
�� Can there by more musical accompaniment?�
�� We are constantly learning new ways to stay connected at this time with church, family, friends�
�� It’s not the same as being at Church and receiving the Eucharist, but it fulfills a spiritual need�
�� Would like an update on parish staff and school furloughs�will the Diocese help (return some CMA funds)?�
�� Don’t have Facebook �
�� Would like more “visits” online with priests, deacons, staff�
�� Why can’t we pick up consecrated Eucharist?�
�� Can we have more child�oriented activities, blessings, community service projects?�
�� Can we do online bible study or book club or podcasts? Would one of the priests offer online teaching? �
�� Would like a town hall moderated by staff with questions sent in�
�
“I think you're doing a fine job of staying in touch via social media. Hearing homilies that relate to what we're all
going through right now � and perhaps giving us tips to help fight feelings of isolation and sadness/depression �
would be very helpful. Thanks! And God bless you all for making yourselves available to us under surreal �
circumstances.”�

Our parish staffs and Council members will continue to review all of your comments, suggestions, and �
critiques. You will see minor adjustments in the online streaming as a result, and we will begin to plan for
additional ways to stay connected while also “reimagining” what our parish life will look like �
post�pandemic.�
