atr sees Further Growth potential in asia pacificATR, the world’s leading manufacturer of turboprop aircraft, sees that there is huge growth potential for the company in the Asia Pacific region. The manufacturer anticipates a demand for some 750 turboprops within the next two decades in the region (excluding China). Asia Pacific is ATR’s largest market globally accounting for over one third of the global fleet. As of today, there are nearly 1,200 ATRs around the world, of which some 420 are in Asia Pacific. The region ranks first in terms of number of ATRs in operation. Of the top ten countries in the world, in terms of ATR fleet size, four are in the Asia Pacific region. The biggest country globally, in terms of number of ATR aircraft in operation, is Indonesia with 99 aircraft. The other countries in Asia Pacific that made the global top ten are: Malaysia with 47 aircraft (No. 5 globally), India with 46 aircraft (No. 6 globally) and Myanmar with 34 (no. 10 globally). In addition, about one half of the ATR’s order backlog is from operators in Asia Pacific.

“Asia Pacific is a fast-developing region of the world with strong economies, but there is a real need for greater air connectivity in the region to further drive economic growth,” says ATR CEO Christian Scherer. “Many cities and towns in Asia Pacific need more air services and there are many places that still have no or very few air services. ATR are the best aircraft for developing new air routes and new markets. In 2017, our aircraft created 70 new routes in Asia Pacific alone, thus bringing regional connectivity to new places and expanding business opportunities for regional carriers”’.

The versatile and fuel-efficient ATR 72-600 and ATR 42-600 are the right size for many of the destinations in Asia Pacific. ATR aircraft can also land and take off from airports with short runways that other aircraft are unable to serve.

Dassault aviation unveils its new Falcon 6XDassault Aviation chose Paris-Le Bourget (LBG) – where Charles Lindbergh landed after the first transatlantic flight in history – to reveal its new plane: the Falcon 6X. The brand describes it as “the most spacious, advanced and versatile twinjet in business aviation.” The 6X is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW812D engines that already equip other business planes such as the Gulfstream G500 and G600. It offers the Falcon 6X a top speed of Mach 0.90 and a maximum range 5,500 nautical miles (10,186km), one of the longest ranges in this category of planes. This allows it to connect Los Angeles to Paris without a stop. It is only dethroned by the G600 – which should be delivered in early 2019 – with its 6,500 nautical miles (12,040km) in range.

It also offers a large 40’8” by 8’6”cabin (12.3 m by 2.58 m) and 6’6” in height (1.98 m) for a total of 1843 cubic feet (52,2 m3 ). Those dimensions allow the new Falcon 6x to house up to 19 passengers in its lounge areas. The cabin disposition is available in three different configurations. The galley area receives natural light from a skylight, a unique feature in business category. The wing, especially designed to smoothen any turbulences are equipped with a flaperon (a hybrid of flap and aileron), a control surface usually used in larger commercial planes. It gives the 6X additional controlling edge during approach.

Most of these features were already used on the Falcon 5X. This Dassault Aviation’s project was canceled in December 2017, after Safran failed to deliver its new Silvercrest engine on time. The 5X had already been delayed for three years when

it was abandoned. The episode may have deteriorated the relations between the

two French companies collaborating on projects such as the Rafale figher jet. Textron being the only remaining customer for the Silvercrest engine with its Cessna Citation Hemisphere expected to be released in 2019, Safran will need to find new buyers. As for the 5X customers, most of them moved to Dassault 7X and 8X, even though some are now asking to switch to the 6X, according to Dassault Aviation CEO Eric Trappier.

The Falcon 6X will be available for about the same price as the 5X: $47M. It is expected to make its first flight by 2021 and to be delivered in 2022.

emirates firms up order for up to 36 additional a380sEmirates and Airbus firmed up an earlier Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and signed a contract for 20 additional A380s with a further 16 options to be confirmed at a later date. The total agreement for 36 aircraft is valued at US$16 billion based on the latest list prices. Deliveries are to start as early as 2020.

The agreement was signed at the World Government Summit by HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group; and Mikail Houari, Airbus President for Africa and Middle East. Also present were HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, ruler of the Emirate of Dubai; and Edouard Philippe, Prime Minister of France.

HH Sheikh Ahmed said: “This agreement underscores our commitment to the A380 programme, providing stability to the A380 production line and supporting thousands of high-value jobs across the aviation supply chain. For Emirates, the A380 has been a successful aircraft for our customers, our operations, and our brand. We look forward to continue working with Airbus to further enhance the aircraft and onboard product.”

“We thank Emirates, HH Sheikh Ahmed, Tim Clark and Adel Al-Redha for their continued confidence in the A380, which has so successfully transformed air travel in the 21st century,” said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus President Commercial Aircraft and Chief Operating Officer. “This latest agreement further demonstrates the strength of our valued partnership with Emirates in support of their impressive growth.”

The A380 is an essential part of the solution to sustainable air traffic growth, alleviating congestion at busy airports by transporting more passengers with fewer flights. The aircraft is the best way to capture growing world air traffic, which doubles every 15 years. The flagship airliner can accommodate 575 passengers in four classes and offers a range of 8,200 nautical miles (15,200 kilometers).

Boeing 737 maX 9 awarded Faa certification Boeing announced that the 737 MAX 9 has received an amended type certificate (ATC) from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), officially certifying the airplane for commercial service.

This certification marks the culmination of a successful flight test program that began in March 2017 with two Boeing flight test airplanes. The FAA certification affirms that the airplane's handling, systems and overall performance all comply with required aviation regulations.

"Our teams built superior capabilities into the MAX 9 and proved them all the way through flight test. We're looking forward to bringing this airplane to market for our valued customers," said Keith Leverkuhn, vice president and general manager of the 737 MAX program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "I am proud of the entire team for helping us reach another important development milestone."

Boeing is now in the final stages of preparing the MAX 9 for its first delivery to launch customer Lion Air Group.

The 737 MAX 9 is designed for a capacity of up to 220 passengers and a maximum range of 3,550 nautical miles. With three additional seat rows compared to the 737 MAX 8, this airplane provides operators added capacity while maximizing profitability within their network.

The 737 MAX family is designed to offer customers exceptional performance, with lower per-seat costs and an extended range that is opening up new destinations in the single-aisle market. The 737 MAX incorporates the latest CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets, Boeing Sky Interior, large flight deck displays and other features to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market.

Jet airways enters sale and leaseback deal for 13 Boeing 737maX 8SMBC Aviation Capital announced signing a sale and leaseback deal with India’s Jet Airways for 13 Boeing 737 MAX 8s powered by CFM International LEAP-1B engines. The first aircraft set to deliver in August 2018. “This agreement will facilitate a well-programmed induction of the much-awaited Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to our fleet, helping us enhance operational efficiency and redefine our service experience on the back of growing air traffic demand in India,” said Vinay Dube, CEO of Jet Airways. The leasing company notes that the transaction is “its most significant single deal to date in India”. SMBC Aviation Capital is currently leasing three B737-800 aircraft, delivered in “recent months” to Jet Airways.

“We are very pleased to conclude this transaction, our most significant MAX sale and leaseback to date,” said Peter Barrett, CEO, SMBC Aviation Capital. “This transaction, which follows a competitive tender process, demonstrates our ability to provide innovative financing solutions to our customers. India is one of our fastest growing markets and we are pleased to extend our presence in the region with Jet Airways, which is one of our longest standing partners”.

At the same time, revenues from passengers rose by 11.7% to INR 5,541 cr. and from Cargo rose by 39.3% to INR 510 cr. The airline also inducted 5 additional Boeing 737 aircraft in its fleet in the period up to December, helping it strengthen its domestic footprint and services.

The Group’s efforts to bring in operational efficiencies for a healthier business continued to

deliver results in the form of progressive reduction in non-fuel costs, despite strengthening of the Brent price and lower domestic fares. CASK-excluding fuel decreased by 2.6% to INR 3.02 against INR 3.10 in Q3 FY17. The fall was in line with the carrier’s recent announcement of achieving a 12-15 percent reduction in non-fuel CASK over the next couple of years.

Vinay Dube, Chief Executive Officer, Jet Airways, said, "Our efforts to streamline costs to ensure our competitiveness reflected in the continued fall in our non-fuel CASK to INR 3.02 during the quarter. The process to rationalise our cost

structure is an ongoing one and will continue. Notwithstanding our challenges of low domestic fares and the rise in fuel prices by almost 20%, we expanded our B737 fleet as well as overall capacity by 8.7%, deepening our presence on key domestic and international routes. We also initiated several measures to enhance our product and service experience including refurbishing the interiors of our flagship Boeing 777s as well as bringing significant enhancements in our onboard menu choices - which form an integral part of our full service offering. We look forward to the arrival of our new aircraft – the latest, fuel-efficient Boeing 737 Max, from June 2018 onwards.”

indian female pilot made history in first miG-21 solo flight

Flying officer Avani Chaturvedi made history on February 19, 2018, becoming the first female pilot of the Indian Air Force (IAF) to complete a solo flight in a fighter aircraft. “Chaturvedi became the first Indian woman to fly a fighter aircraft solo when she flew a MiG-21 Bison in her first solo flight,” an IAF official told.

Chaturvedi, who is posted to IAF’s No. 23 Squadron “Panthers”, completed a half-hour-long solo flight in the MiG-21 jet over IAF’s Jamnagar Air Base in the state of Gujarat, northwestern India. According to Internet Sources, Chaturvedi had undergone strenuous training program to fly fighter jets. After completing her basic training

on a Pilatus PC-7 turboprop aircraft at the Air Force Academy, Chaturvedi went on to train on Kiran and Hawk jets. She now has two more years of training before being deployed as a fully operational combat fighter pilot. Three women pilots – Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh – were commissioned as flying officers in the IAF in 2016, after the Indian government decided to open the fighter stream for women on an experimental basis for an initial period of five years,

Sources in the IAF called Chaturvedi’s solo flight a significant moment marking a breakthrough in providing a “real” combat role for women in defense operations. “This is a major milestone in training of a fighter pilot and first time and Indian woman has flown a fighter aircraft solo,” IAF spokesperson Wing Commander Anupam Banerjee told The Indian Express. The IAF has already selected the next three women trainee pilots for the fighter stream. Back in November 2017, the Indian Navy inducted first woman navy pilot, Shubangi Swaroop. Three other women pilots were also inducted into the Naval Armament Inspection branch, which was previously considered to be only for men, Times of India reported.

The MiG-21 BisonThe Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 is a supersonic fighter jet manufactured by the Russian

Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau. It was produced in the early 1950s as a successor to the MiG-19. The jet made its first flight in February 1956, and was introduced into service in 1959. The jet is a low-cost swept-back delta winged fighter with service ceiling of 58,400 feet (17,800 meters), capable of reaching Mach 2 speeds, with increased combat range of 1,947 miles (1,210 km). The MiG-21 was used by the Soviet Air Force and currently is operated primarily by the Indian, Russian and Bulgarian air forces.

The fighter jet has become one of the star performers of the IAF. The IAF acquired 300 MiG-21 Bisons in the 1980s. In time, 175 of these were upgraded and integrated in the IAF’s inventory with a host of improvements over its predecessor. Since 1960s, the IAF has operated over 800 MiG-21s and over 1,200 MiGs in general. The 4thgeneration MiGs are now up for replacement by a 4-4.5 generation fighter by 2022-2025.

Embraer received Type Certificate for the E190-E2, the first member of the E-Jets E2 family of commercial aircraft, from the Brazilian Civil Aviation Agency (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil – ANAC), the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency).

It took 56 months from program launch until the E190-E2 was certified. The E190-E2 features new ultra-high bypass ratio engines and a new wing and landing gear. Compared to the first-generation E190, 75% of the aircraft systems are new.

The flight test program comprised four prototype aircraft which were subjected to testing. The E190-E2 test

fleet completed over 2,000 flight hours. Some 45,000 hours of tests were conducted in laboratories with rigs for aircraft avionics, flight controls, and electrical, hydraulic, and environmental systems.

“Today’s certification of the E190-E2 marks a pivotal milestone in the program. It’s reasonable to now anticipate an acceleration of commercial discussions with operators around the globe” said John Slattery, President & CEO, Embraer Commercial Aviation. “Today, many of the campaigns involving the E190-E2 and it’s bigger sibling the E195-E2 are with new operators for Embraer - and that’s very encouraging as we continue our trajectory towards 100 E-Jets operators

around the world.”

Widerøe, the largest regional airline in Scandinavia, is the first airline to receive the E190-E2. The aircraft will be put in service in April, 2018. The airline has a contract for up to 15 E2 family jets consisting of three firm orders for the E190-E2 and purchase rights for 12 further E2 family aircraft.

In fuel consumption, the E190-E2 proved to be 1.3% better than originally expected, a 17.3% improvement compared to the current- generation E190. The E190-E2 also becomes the most environmentally friendly aircraft in its class, with the lowest levels of external noise and emissions, the company states.

Flight test results also confirmed the E190-E2 to be better than its original specification in takeoff

performance. The aircraft’s range from airports with hot-and-high conditions, such as Denver and Mexico City, increases by 600 nm compared to current-generation aircraft. Its range from airports with short runways, such as London City, also increases by more than 1,000 nm allowing the aircraft to reach destinations like Moscow and cities in the north of Africa.

The E190-E2 will also have the longest maintenance intervals among single-aisle aircraft with 10,000 flight hours for basic checks and no calendar limit for typical utilization. This means an additional 15 days of aircraft utilization over ten years compared to current generation E-Jets. Another key gain is with pilot transition training time. Pilots of current-generation E-Jets will need only 2.5 days of training and no full flight simulator to be qualified to fly an E2.

14 MARCH 2018 AVIATION UPDATE

Can you brief us about your profile?Once I discovered my passion for aviation, I dedicated myself entirely to it. From the very beginning of my career (I started out in the industry at the age of 17), I was determined to leave a mark. In fact, I even helped an Indian company set up an aviation division completely from scratch. My journey then led me to launching JetSetGo in 2014.

How and when did you get the idea to start JetSetGo?The concept of JetSetGo came up in a conversation with a colleague in the UK. I narrated an idea that I had about setting up a thriving private aviation company, born out of India, not aimed at making my colleague laugh out loud, but that’s just what happened. Being Indian and adamant, I was determined to prove him, and everybody else that thought along the same lines, wrong.

What are the products/services that JetSetGo offers? At JetSetGo, we’ve introduced a plethora of transformative practices into the industry. We therefore ensure a transparent pricing system and, more importantly, excellence and consistency in service.

Ad Hoc Charters

Prior to JetSetGo’s inauguration, the experience of flying private was limited to a few. However, we now make it possible for anyone to book a private jet either online or through a simple phone call.

The JetSetGo App

JetSetGo was the first Indian company to introduce an easy-to-use smartphone app that allows ad hoc customers and owners to book, manage, and execute private flights.

Our innovative app makes the otherwise convoluted and laborious task of booking a private jet even more transparent, straightforward, and prompt.

JetSteals

Similar to commercial airlines, flying a private jet with no customers on board is unprofitable, wasteful, and inefficient. Through instituting our JetSteals program, we were able to market and book these so-called “empty legs,” wherein potential clients seeking a

bargain can fly from and to certain pre-decided airports at a fraction of the cost by booking the number of seats they require rather than the entire jet.

Exclusive Membership

We hosts a unique membership program that allows clients to be part of an exclusive private flyers club. By committing to fly a certain number of hours every year, JSG customers can receive numerous perks, such as free upgrades, Meet and Greet assistance at the

airport, luxurious hotel stays, chauffeured transfers, and 24/7 concierge services.

End-to-End Personalisation

To fly private is to have a refined understanding of luxury. Hence, at JetSetGo, we make every flight unforgettable and one-of-a-kind, tailormade to our clients’ requests. As the only company to offer complete customisation and even child-friendly planes, we have found a loyal family of customers who trust JSG for all their travel needs.

Aircraft Management

JetSetGo administers important processes such as front-end procedures, maintenance, ground operations, in-flight management, procurement, spare parts and tools handling and sharing programs, dispatch, and safety, giving a plane all the care it needs to offer the most luxurious flying experience for our passengers.

Unlike the average private jet owner, we host a global network of suppliers and a trained in-house ground operations unit for our fleet of aircrafts, making it possible to achieve economies of scale, cutting costs for jet owners and making private aviation a realistic travel solution for everyone.

JetShuttle

In yet another first, we’ve introduced a one-of-a-kind JetShuttle program. Our clients can now simply hop onto a JetShuttle from New Delhi to four of India's popular hotspots, without having to worry about lengthy check-in queues, long wait time at airports, tedious check-in formalities, or other time delays. Our frequent shuttles ensure a client that they can book their travel as per their convenience at a fraction of the usual cost.

That’s how we’ve changed the

game and redefined the private flying experience, making it more cost-effective, accessible, and convenient to fly private.

What makes JetSetGo different from other players in the market? Before JetSetGo’s inception, owning and managing a private jet was an expensive and inefficient burden. Owing to the lack of usage, tedious maintenance upkeep, and when considering ad hoc charters, the lack of trust and transparency within the customer-aggregator relationship, private jet owners and flyers alike often felt cheated.

Though this complex and disorganised structure dissuaded Indian private charter aggregators from aggressively entering the market, we rose to the challenge and became the critical link between aircraft owners and those looking to fly private. We have been able to make private jets cheaper and more efficient profit centres rather than cost centres through a complete takeover of one’s jet. By administering important processes such as front-end procedures, maintenance, ground operations, in-flight management, procurement, spare parts and tools handling and sharing programs, aircraft management, dispatch, and safety, we give your plane all the care it needs to offer the most luxurious flying experience for our passengers.

Unlike the average private jet owner, we host a global network of suppliers and a trained in-house ground operations unit for our fleet of aircrafts, which helps us achieve economies of scale, thereby increasing the efficiency of each plane and reducing overall costs - an unmatched competitive advantage. As our team is available 24/7, 365 days a year,

we’re able to ensure a charter is booked within 3 minutes of receiving a request from an owner. As soon as a booking is registered with us, the jet of choice undergoes a swift system of 29 safety checks - far more than the regular carrier.

What are the biggest challenges JetSetGo faces in the Indian market? There have undoubtedly been numerous challenges as operators in the Indian private aviation industry. A license here, a redundant rule there… There is a modest lack of efficiency and initiative, but it is equally important to recognise our government’s commitment to economic growth, noting especially their inviting and encouraging attitude towards startups. After all, we did receive the National Entrepreneurship Award in 2016.

Central controls truly are beginning to observe the indispensable benefits of supporting entrepreneurs and thought leaders, and I believe that in a couple of years, we are definitely going to be one of the biggest economic global powers through policies that relax stringent and unnecessary

government red tape while tightening economic funds towards aviation.

What are the key milestones/achievements that JetSetGo has achieved so far?In a recent report, we identified that JetSetGo enjoys a client satisfaction rate of 92%, which is the underlying force behind our surplus of growth and recognition, and my global reputation for excellence and innovation. Not only has JetSetGo been awarded the prestigious National Entrepreneurship Award by the Government of India, but through introducing cutting-edge practices and premium service into the Indian private aviation industry, I’ve been able to place on numerous coveted lists such as Forbes’ 30 Under 30, CNN’s 20 Under 40, and BBC’s 100 Most Inspiring Women in the World. With JetSetGo, India now flies many miles closer to global market leadership in private aviation.

What is your opinion of the Regional Connectivity Scheme under UDAAN? Is it a boon or bane for JetSetGo?There currently exist over 200 airports/airstrips in India capable of landing private jets, but only 30% of those are easily accessible and/or served by commercial airlines so it is undoubtedly a boon for us. Not only will it increase competition, which allows us to be more ambitious and aggressive with our business practices, but it will add to healthy, balanced, and steady regional growth.

When India focuses on streamlining processes and ensuring funds for expansion, we always thrive. As a young country, the opportunities are endless, especially if we continue to add to both domestic and international competition - and

I trust that this scheme will undoubtedly do that. We’re bound to become influencers in the global economic sphere through introducing innovative policies like the RCS.

What are the other ventures you are planning to enter in the near future?Perhaps world domination… Though I’m not sure you would call that a vanture! :)

In all seriousness, we aim to further stimulate the surge in India’s private aviation sector. By 2026, our nation is expected to have the third largest sector in the world, and JetSetGo will undoubtedly be there - leading the private jet revolution and cementing India’s place in the big leagues.

What is your advice to girls who want to choose aviation as a career? To the women trying to make it in the big bad world of aviation: it may seem impossible, but it’s kind of fun to do the impossible, isn’t it? Don’t give up. As I always say, use every no as a stepping stone to success.

What is your wish list for 2018?Currently, our growth strategy involves a combination of development plans, including finding new, unexplored target audiences within India and catering to global markets. We also look forward to diversifying our range of services and continuing to innovate our technology and internal processes, thus making the dream of a JetSetGo flight a reality for any individual.

Ultimately, I strongly believe that a market is not simply taken over; it is created, nurtured, and made to thrive. As we design and cultivate our market, we look forward to solving new challenges in 2018 and that’s what truly keeps me going.

Aerospace engineering constituting more than a third of Cyient’s total revenue is indicative of the tremendous scope of growth. How has the demand in India and overseas been?

Engineering outsourcing predominantly is based upon the program launches- be it airframe, engine, or systems. With newer programs, we see a significant spike in the direct Engineering, Research & Design (ER&D) business which then tapers out and gives way to product improvement, maintenance engineering or obsolescence during production and aftermarket phases. So technically, there is always, some ER&D work happening throughout the product phase.

Of the global aerospace revenues, around 4% is utilized on a multitude of R&D activities. What started as the business of cost arbitrage and flexible capacity a decade back, has now converged into “technology proliferation,” “program partnerships,” and “innovative business models” resulting in improved cost realizations for the OEMs.

So as long as the budgeted ER&D tracks flat or upwards, on a global outlook, we can safely assume engineering demand to be active.

In Aerospace and Defence vertical, what are some of your strengths and which are the areas where you see the maximum potential for growth and innovation?

Aerospace product engineering is our stronghold for many years now. We lead Integrated Product Teams (IPT), undertake System level ownership, and provide

discipline level support on various systems/sub-systems for our customers that cut across aero engines, airframe, interiors, avionic and aero systems domain.

We are proud to maintain our leadership position in global ER&D ratings since 2011 and our multitude of awards for engineering excellence from OEMs stand the testimony of the design excellence we have bred.

Cyient’s vision for growth lies in Design led Manufacturing (DLM). It is the mantra through which we see ourselves offering complete end to end support in the product lifecycle, from design conception to sunset. We are doing much work in IP creation, and new technology solutions as detailed in the forthcoming sections.

With respect to this business unit, what are some of Cyient’s unbeatable USPs?

Cyient’s constant quest for quality, innovation, IP creation, and risk sharing program partnerships offer an excellent value proposition to our customers and enable accelerated time to market while lowering the non-recurring costs. It is further boosted by our domain spread, and offset discharge enablement since last ten years.

So, it is the wholesome value proposition on offer that takes credit as our USP.

What are some of Cyient’s most remarkable innovations in this segment?

As a global leader in engineering services, Cyient has been working to evolve its offerings portfolio from services to systems and solutions. Innovation is central to the implementation of this strategy and offer value to our customers. Almost all our innovations are on the product engineering side leading to better, lighter, and reliable designs.

We do this by a continual focus on generating new productivity improvement, cost avoidance, and patentable ideas.

Datawise, in FY16 we ideated 94 productivity scope and achieved approved annual savings of US $6.4 million for our customers. These ideas enabled us to file eight patent applications with USPTO, publishing, and presentation of 14 technical papers in international and national forums, and eventually bagging “Productivity Savings, & Cost Avoidance,” “Supplier Productivity & Innovation” and “Supplier

of the Year” awards from various customer OEMs.

What are some of the challenges in this industry for players like you especially in India?

Indian aviation scenario poses a multitude of challenges for engineering and manufacturing firms like Cyient.

Defense engagement requires more inclusive, and participative industrial policies to build supplier ecosystem for non-government players to flourish.

The civil sector supports many job profiles and as the global aerospace & defense companies continue to consolidate suppliers, transition work to more current & cost efficient locations, India must match both the technology capabilities, skilled workforce, and cost advantages to secure a proportional share of this market.

Some of the top challenges here are:

The non-existent ecosystem at a multi-tiered supplier level- From the acquisition of materials to full integration including composites, additive manufacturing, and assembly/integration capabilities executing on par with more mature aerospace & defense industrial based markets.

The “Make in India” movement so far has only managed to excite big players and could evoke low enthusiasm from the small and medium private players.

MRO is predicted to be one of the fastest growing subsectors in India at 7% CAGR but is marred by poor tax structure, policies and available hangar space resulting in most of the maintenance (C & D) checks being outsourced and causing massive capital outflow.

How has the acquisition of Rangsons Electronics gathered momentum for

Cyient’s growth? What has been its contribution to the overall revenues?

Rangsons acquisition happened at the fag end of FY-16. Post acquisition a series of consolidation exercises and restructuring took place. Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) and Precision Manufacturing business was new to Cyient, and we took considerable time in structuring and integrating this business into our pure play engineering portfolio. Significant work underwent in establishing complimentary strategy and marketing plan, and our geo sales were tasked to propagate the new fuller value prop on the offering to the customers. Today, we have consolidated the manufacturing business completely with the eight business units and call it Design led Manufacturing (DLM). In FY-16, DLM contributed around 11% of our total revenue. This year we are poised to break that mark comfortably with a significant 40% YoY growth revenue jump. All this was possible with the constant in-flow of traditional orders plus the new partnerships forged while focussing on our new high value, low volume production strategy.

Tell us about your partnership with Pratt & Whitney.

Cyient-United Technologies Corporation (UTC) engagement started in the year 2000 with a team of 20 engineers. Today, it has grown to more than 1,400 engineers and experts delivering engineering solutions through our six global delivery centers to the UTC business groups worldwide namely Pratt & Whitney America, Pratt & Whitney Canada, UTC Aerospace Systems, and UTC –Climate Control & Security.

Cyient also delivers innovative engineering to other UTC units and JVs in Singapore, Norway, New Zealand, China, and the UK.

With around 14% stake, P&WA has one of the eleven board of directors at Cyient.

Workwise, we deliver solutions in product and process engineering, industrialization and aftermarket under mechanical systems, electronics and engineering IT domains.

All Cyient sites in India are ACE Gold Certified- a standard operating system for quality across UTC.

Please provide us insights on how aerospace industry is gearing up to adopt next-gen solutions and how

We do this by a continual focus on generating new productivity improvement, cost avoidance, and patent-able ideas.

Page 22: 04 06 MARCH 2018 Wings Indiaaviationupdatemagazine.com/images/admin_images... · 2018-10-02 · Vol 04 Issue 06 MARCH 2018 ` 100 AVIATION India’s premier aviation monthly magazineUPDATE

do you think Cyient is placed in delivering those solutions?

Today we see a cautious and stable adaptation of new technologies like Big Data, Internet of Things, Augmented Reality, UAV, and additive manufacturing in A&D industry. The two major disrupters in this space are the Big Data and Additive manufacturing.

Internet of Things (IoT) enabled products generate Big Data. Many customers look for solutions to draw insights from the big data to diagnose their product performance, collect business intelligence and incorporate preventive maintenance. Cyient works on Big Data and is executing some notable projects on asset availability, reliability, and maintainability.

Additive Manufacturing has the potential to reshape the manufacturing process and is growing promisingly especially in the precision prototyping of non-critical parts where the costs are staggering. As we see more parts obtaining certifications, this may further progress to critical and larger parts. Cyient has instituted a 3D experience center in partnership with Dassault Systems which gives an opportunity for our associates to work on concepts using any of the engineering software from the Dassault suite and print it using Nylon/Polyamide based 3D printer in-house. Apart from this, we are also partnering with reputed companies in the area of metal based prototyping.

Since Cyient is one of the leading home grown Engineering Services and Design companies, how is it contributing to the Make in India campaign especially in context to your Business Unit.?

Cyient this year is celebrating its 25th year in existence. The Make in India (MII) initiative was launched in 2014 to transform India into a global design and manufacturing hub. The direction that is shown by MII which is further catapulted by the DPP -2016. DPP recognizes the role of MSMEs through newly incorporated preferred procurement class for Indigenous Designed Developed and Manufactured (IDDM) products called “Buy Indian-IDDM.” It provides an option for engineering and manufacturing firms in India to collaborate, co-develop and bid based upon the indigenized content they create hence, become part of the mainstream defense products below Rs. 2,000 crore procurement limit.

Cyient, today through its DLM business, is a direct manufacturing supplier of precision and electronic components to India defense and space and proud to have delivered an excess of 30,000 parts. We are also an active participant in various development programs, program managed by government labs and DPSUs.

How do you see your division shaping up by 2020 and are you looking at any new strategy to reach your goals?

Client expectations today are rapidly changing. Demand for “high-quality and low-cost engineering” is morphing into “co-innovation and system level engineering” using new business models.

Our short and long-term organizational strategies are aligned to meet these changing client expectations. Some of the focus points that drive our strategy are:

Systems & Solutions: With Design led Manufacturing we are in the process of enhancing our value proposition. We call this our S-3 strategy that talks about moving beyond the traditional services towards systems and solutions thereby becoming a full product developer at component and sub-system level and support product from idea inception to sunset.

We expect this to lead us to transformational growth over the next 3 to 5 years.

Data Analytics & aftermarket: We have made significant investments in these two areas to tap into these business segments. Our acquisition of Insights and GSE Asia brings us to the forefront of this business.

Moreover, significant work is happening in diagnostic and prognostics as well as repair development engineering that will help in improving the aircraft turnaround time resulting in minimal repairs and improved asset availability.

Investing in relationships: While we carry on forging new partnerships, our focus will be primarily on existing high-value strategic customers who help us to build a sustainable and profitable business.

Technology adaptation & IP: We are making investments in developing Proof of Concepts in new technologies which will help us develop new competencies and strengthen our solution kit and IP portfolio beyond product engineering.

What are the top 3 trends to watch out for in 2018?

Apart from the regulars like procurement/maintenance deals, and joint venture announcements, we may see local industry displaying its growth in sensor based electronics, miniaturization, software led differentiation, digital engineering, indigenized content in aircraft assemblies, intricate machining & fabrication and developments in existing DPSU programs.

Some industry stress points that might get a fair share of attention are:

Supply chain assessment by foreign OEMs who plan to bring business to India for localized and cost factor reasons. In this regard, investments may come in building a broader partner base which allows adequate nimbleness and leverage inherent strengths in engineering, IT and manufacturing for more value added play.

MRO as part of integrated aftermarket, tooling, electronic documents, and maintenance aids like UAV, AI and other disruptive advancements supporting shorter turnaround time at the Gates and offering better reliability and asset availability thereby improving the Average Load Factor (ALF).

Public Private Partnerships (PPP) for ground and airborne equipment which may include but not limited to collaboration in electronic warfare systems and mission avionics to more technology-based collaboration in RF, digital signal processing, communication protocols, displays, sensing and real-time operating systems.

Today, we have consolidated the manufacturing business completely with the eight business units and call it Design led Manufacturing (DLM). In FY-16, DLM contributed around 11% of our total revenue

232018 MARCHAVIATION UPDATE

AU: In terms of Asia pacific which are the countries gulfstream is hiring more aircrafts at present?

GS: In china, Asia pacific we have 331 aircrafts in total. If you take a look back 10 years, Asia pacific is now doubled in these 10-12 years of period. It use to be about 2% of the worldwide gulfstream market. So there are certain number of the aircraft that we have delivered since day one and today its 2800 gulftreams. The Asia pacific represents 12 percent of that number. Now if you break it down by various countries China, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and India, then the numbers change but the larger growth that I how we measure then its definitely China. Because there was not base for aviation 10-12 years ago. Whereas India there is a base line number where you add one or two aircraft and that’s not large percent. The China where started of zero and you add 150. So it goes up pretty well. So China and Asia pacific is the largest market today.

AU: in terms of different segments of an aircraft model, what is the best selling product?

GS: if you break down over the large number of the selling aircrafts then large cabinet aircrafts represents the larger number by far. The 280 and the 150 represent smaller portion of the market. And if look at the G550 then it’s certainly market leaders as far gulfstream followed by G450 and G650 today.

AU: Is there any competition in terms of G650 ER?

GS: The closest competitor of G650 is G550. It’s not us saying it; it’s purely by the numbers. The range, speed and the size of G650 ER, there is no other plane around as compare of it. If we talk about the number then from

March 2008 to December 2012 we delivered 280 G650 aircrafts basically in a five year of period and there is no other competitor who can make those coins.

AU: Recently the production of G450 has been stopped. Is the reason that now you are producing G550 and G650 or because of the lack of orders?

GS: If you look at the evaluation of our manufacturing model that

we produce an aircraft for long and not real set of production schedule but the demand and revise that you make a new aircraft model and come that simply we did with G450. We do for refresh with it so we started with 450. So once the market started down the G450. So we started producing G550 and G650. And we delivered on this January the last G450. A lot of the earlier buyers of G450 have

gone to G550 and G650 or decided to move to the 500 or 600.

AU: Same time you have been taken two new products, what made you decided to make this decision?

GS: We got long term plan. Gulfstream and our other competitor is doing what the market is saying. So after few years of research we decided to announce both of the aircrafts on the same day and we also taxied up them up to the hanger on the same day.

AU: Is it happening that gulfstream is trying to make records like as it is trying to make the fastest records?

GS: When some buys an aircraft, they want to have a best cabin that they can have and the most efficient aircraft and typically they want the fastest aircraft. Our aircrafts, if we fly in the slow speed we get the long range, which is faster than other aircrafts.

AU: What are the MRO facilities available for these aircrafts?

GS: We have facilities in Mumbai we have air works, jet aviation in Dubai and here in Singapore which will be the closet MRO for India. We have got facility in Beijing as well. Basically gulfstream has its own facilities. London is the popular destination from India and we have facility there in London too. We have 12 facility companies.

AU: How many aircraft has been delivered in 2017?

GS: We have delivered 120 aircrafts.

AU: is there any production rate or state of standard per month or per year?

GS: No. however, we have delivered 120 aircrafts in 2017 and pretty much is for 2018.

AU: What is the backlog as of now standing on?

GS: It’s 12.5 billion.

AU: What challenges are you facing in last decade in Indian market?

GS: There are not sufficient landing and take of slots, parking space, and lack of FBOs, for example, it was quite difficult first we took G650 to Mumbai and it was very tough to show the aircraft to the people. We had to park the aircraft on the ramp. Also the process of signing sells agreement for fighter planes not resistance in India. The biggest

issue in India is the availability of infrastructure. Mumbai and Delhi is not resistance for general aviation. It has pretty much air traffic and parking issues. In India it’s got rich tradition of having business aircrafts for decades, more than any other country. The population does not seem to be growing. There is a restriction on growth. These issues are restricting business chairs to come from other countries. Which is also restricting the economy growth. One of my passions in India is that I am trying to get the market expanded. Typically, we

will have one or two aircraft on display at Hyderabad or Bangalore airshow.

AU: Are planning to set up any manufacturing facility in India?

GS: No, because we have expended manufacturing in Savannah and it cost billion dollars. And we have built a new manufacturing facility for G650 production. We have also build service centre, research and development centre, new facility centre for G500 and G600 manufacturing. So from the foresee of the future the production will be pretty much in Savannah.

AU: G500 and G600 can expect the certification to be completed before 2018?

GS: We will certify G500 surely till the first half of this year. The G600 is scheduled to be in the first quarter of 2019. And that is progressing nicely and could be earlier than that. So within the next 12 months we should get the certification for both aircrafts and begin the deliveries of both.

AU: What is your Wish list for 2018?

GS: Certification for G500 and 600.

Engineering training and M. Sc. Aviation, we are able to produce the Pilots and Engineers with a strong technical expertise and with the sound academic knowledge as well. As such our students are able to be settled in different employment segments like Indian Airforce, Air India, Spice jet, Indigo, Jet Airways, Go air, Air Asia, Air works, Lufthansa, GMR, Air Deccan, True Jet, Blue Dart, Honeywell, Cae, Deloitte, Tech Mahindra, Tajsats, AirIndia Sats, Rockwell automation, Apex, Textron, Camp systems, Turbo, Capgemini, Tata Advanced Systems, Infotech, Infosys, Cyient…..etc.

Our students are able to meet the job requirements of different Airlines, MRO’s, General aviation directly. Apart from this with the academic education and the certification our students are able to get jobs in Central Government through Union Public Service commission, State Government Public Service Commission, National Banking sector employment, Aerospace technical publicationsemployment, Aviation planning, BCAS, DGCA, AAI and Airline employment.

So many new private flying schools are opening. What’s your opinion? To run a flying training organization or an Aircraft Maintenance Engineeringschool one should really have a motto of serving the society by means of producing skilled and efficient Pilots and Engineers. A Government Organization like us, who are working on “No profit No loss” policy can produce the Pilots and Engineers in a competent and low economy prices. Telangana State Aviation Academy has been training the Pilots and Engineers to the required commercial Airline standard at a very lowest and competent prices.

In TSAA we trained the students for the technical programmes and for the academia as well. Such facility can be seen nowhere in India, for which we are proud of it. The combination of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering programme with M. Sc. in Aviation has been set as a good and useful composition for the benefit of employment and for the benefit of higher education in India and Abroad.

TSAA has been following:

1. Task centered and activity

centre curriculum

2. Objective based curriculum

3. Experienced centered curriculum and integratedcurriculum to train the students for the technical training programme and for the academia.

TSAA has been successful in implementing a 3 tier education system such as

Familiarization of theory, concepts and the practicalphenomina of the subject.

Conceptualizing the theoryand the practicals withthe association of makingconcerned live mock-upswith the participation of thestudent.

Providing hands onexperience to acquire themastery over requiredtraining.

There is lot of pilot shortage in India. How can we overcome this issue? What is your solution? India has been facing lot of shortage of pilots, commanders and flying instructors for a long time, whereas the requirement and the demand for the pilots is increasing day by day. Since the policies of Government of India has been favoring the growth and sustainability of Aviation industry is guaranteed. The Central Government policy of FDI and the Regional Air Connectivity has opened the windows for the employment opportunities to the pilots, in such case we feel the following measures might support the production of skilled and efficient pilots in complying the need of developing super power India. Availability of a Pilot training programme at an affordable price for a middle class person. In which TSAA is already successful in providing

flying training i n a n affordable price.

Opening FTO’s in every

urban area/city with Regional Air

Connectivity at more Airports /Airfields. Bringing awareness in urban and rural village students about the employability prospects in Aviation industry. Conducting workshops on flying training in every segment of schools to promote flying training to gather the passionate aspirants of the pilot profession. Assurance of State and Central Governments by aiding the skilled and talented students to make them Pilots in a higher number.

What is your opinion on choosing Abroad as option for training? Is it Boon or bane?Abroad as an option for flying training is just like an unripe fruit in the hands of a hunger. It is observed that having availed a foreign CPL many people are failing in clearing DGCA papers for their conversion into Indian CPL. When we can open more F.T.O’s in India there is no need to go Abroad for flying training.

What is your advice to students who wish to take-up Aviation as a career? We advise them to join a very reputed F.T.O who operates from a controlled Airfield, where all navigation aids such as VOR/OME and ILS and Night flight training facility is available to meet the DGCA requirement and Airlines standards and not to join an academy which operates from a small and uncontrolled airfields where there is a possibility of over logging or do not maintain a good quality training and standards.

Such facility can be Seen nowhere in india, for which we are proud of it.
