(BPT) - Whether snuggling in for the night or just trying to catch a quick few winks, your environment plays an important role in determining if you’re counting sheep or counting Zzzs. From noise reduction to lighting, there are a few easy ways you can turn your bedroom into a tranquil oasis.

“A third of the adult population suffers from insomnia from time to time, but only about 6 percent meet the criteria for an actual sleep disorder,” says Dr. Christina Brown from the Florida School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Tampa. “In a good number of cases, getting to sleep and staying asleep is a matter of your surroundings.”

Kristina Held, assistant professor of Interior Design at The Art Institute of Charlotte, a campus of South University, focuses on areas of the bedroom that you may want to re-evaluate in order to create the sleep haven you’ve been craving.

“Creating a bedroom that is conducive to your most restful sleep might require a bit of homework, but I think you’ll find it won’t take you long,” Held says. “As an interior designer, I like to focus on light-ing, bedding, furniture and decor.”

Lighting:Humans were created to be in-synch with the sun cycle. For this

reason, Held recommends positioning your bed to the east so that you will be able to wake up seeing the sun rays peeking in around your curtains.

“Try several layers of curtains to block out light at night,” Held says. “Sheers and heavy protective curtains can help soften the room visually, help with sound absorption, help insulate the window, and are a great opportunity to bring in some color and pattern.” You can leave the sheers drawn during the day to diffuse daylight while pro-

tecting against views from the outside.Both Brown and Held warn about electronics that provide artificial

light in the bedroom. “Get rid of your phones, TVs and iPads while in bed. The artificial light will interrupt your sleep cycle and keep your brain activated, making it harder to get to sleep and keep you off the more natural sleep patterns,” Brown says.

Bedding:“A comfortable mattress enclosed in a hypoallergenic cover

protects from dust mites and allergens such as animal dandruff and pollen,” recommends Held. Try to use only natural fiber con-tent for your bedding such as cotton, organic cotton, silk, or linen blend. Also try using hypoallergenic pillows to prevent allergies. Held also recommends placing a humidifier in your room during the winter months, and changing your air filters at least once in three months.

Furniture and decor:“Don’t use reds, it makes you awake and some say aggressive.

Neutral colors, along with blues and greens, evoke calming feelings that we get when we are surrounded by nature,” Held says.

Place a neutral area rug for noise reduction and decoration. If you live in a busy area, Brown recommends a white noise machine or ceil-ing fan to drown out the background noise. Don’t forget to include some inspiring artwork that is meaningful and brings you feelings of calm.

Horizontal lines inspire calmness and are well-suited for a bed-room. Natural materials bring in a relaxing factor as well. Lastly, unclutter your bedroom as much as possible - it will clear your mind. Some horizontal book shelves may just be the trick to de-cluttering and adding the horizontal line accents.

(BPT) - When you are out shoveling snow and scraping ice off the car’s windshield, winter can seem like an eternity. Yet when it comes to your credit profile, house-hunt-ing and the spring real estate season is just around the corner.

“Warm weather will bring an increase in homes on the market and buyers shopping, so it pays to take steps to make sure your credit profile is in the best shape possible if you’ll be looking for a house come spring,” says Barrett Burns, president and CEO of credit score model developer VantageScore Solutions. “Real estate experts are already predicting that this spring will be an impor-tant season for the industry, with mortgage rates still low and prices creeping back up. In addition to other criteria such as down payments and income, a good credit score can make a big difference when it comes to getting a mortgage at favorable rates.”

VantageScore Solutions recommends home buyers start now to prep their credit profiles before the spring real estate season arrives in March and April. Here are some tips and tidbits to keep in mind as you’re working toward qualifying for a mortgage loan:

• It is essential to know what’s on your credit report before it will be viewed by

potential lenders. Make sure your credit report is up-to-date and accurately reflects your credit behavior. You can obtain your report at AnnualCreditReport.com, the only official site where you can obtain your report every 12 months for free from each of the three major credit reporting companies (CRCs), which are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. And you can access your credit score through all three CRCs from the same website for a small fee.

• Creditors are interested in seeing how you manage credit, and the consistency of behavior counts. In addition to paying your bills on time every month, avoid applying for any new credit between now and the time you will apply for a mortgage. Almost every credit score “inquiry” from a lender is recorded with one or more of the three national CRCs. This can result in a decrease to your VantageScore credit score by 10 to 20 points.

• Keep in mind that some lenders will pull a credit score at the time you apply for the loan, then again just before the loan clos-es. You want to avoid credit score reductions during that time frame, which can occur if you take on unnecessary credit. Also be sure all payments on existing debt are made on time during this timeframe.

• Shop around for mortgage options before you actually apply. Understand lend-ers’ qualifying criteria so you know where you may need to improve. Once you’ve done your research, go ahead and apply to multiple lenders all at once. Multiple applications at the same time will register on your credit report as a single inquiry - as long as they’re all within 14 days of each other - and will have minimal impact on your score.

• Different lenders use different scor-ing models and different models can have different score ranges. For example, the VantageScore model’s range is 501 to 990. You may or may not be able to find out from your potential lender which model they use. What’s important is where you fall in the model’s score range, which tells you how your score compares to others.

Finally, Burns says, don’t worry too much over small fluctuations in your score. “It’s possible for your score to be 772 on Thursday and 765 on Friday,” he says. “It may be back up to 770 the next week. The changes are likely due to updates to your credit files and expiring data. Remember that consis-tent, responsible behavior is more important than small ups and downs in your credit score.”- -

(BPT) - It’s easy to instantly trim your energy consumption and boost the eco-friendliness of your home. The key to easy energy sav-ings is lighting. Though for many homeowners and renters, know-ing how and what to do to improve their home’s lighting energy efficiency can be confusing.

To alleviate that confusion, the American Lighting Association (ALA) offers eight easy energy-saving steps:

1. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents (CFLs). To make an immediate impact on your energy consumption - and your utility bill - swap out your most-used incandescent bulbs with CFLs. “It’s the easiest way to start improving your energy efficiency,” says Joe Rey-Barreau, education consultant for the ALA and an associate professor at the University of Kentucky’s School of Interior Design. If you have not used any residential CFLs in your home, you might be surprised at their range and versatility. The newest CFLs do not flicker like those of old, and they have much better color quality than even just a few years ago. A close look at the color temperature listed on the bulb package label can help you get the right product. “What happens is that people buy a color temperature that’s too cool, and they absolutely hate it,” says Rey-Barreau. Instead, choose a bulb that’s labeled “residential color,” “warm” or “soft white.”

2. Replace dimmable incandescent bulbs with dimmable CFLs. As the color range of CFLs has improved, so has their ability to be dimmed, says Rey-Barreau - and dimmable bulbs are a proven way to decrease energy use. However, while the technology has come a long way, CFLs still do not have the dimming range of incandescents. “At about 20 to 30 percent, the CFL will shut off,” says Rey-Barreau.

3. Buy name brands. It is frustrating to invest in a longer-lasting

bulb only to have it burn out quickly. To avoid that, buy recogniz-able brands for improved quality and color.

4. Revamp outdoor fixtures. Your outdoor lighting fixture may be beautiful, but it may be an energy guzzler, too. Start outside as you slowly replace fixtures with more energy efficient versions. Look for those that use either CFLs or light-emitting diodes (LEDs), or those that activate using a motion sensor or photocell.

5. Buy Energy Star-qualified fixtures and bulbs. Energy Star is a U.S. Department of Energy certification most recognized on appli-ances - though also used on lighting fixtures and bulbs. “Any time someone buys a product that has the Energy Star label, they’ll know it has both efficiency and quality verified,” says Rey-Barreau.

6. Retrofit recessed lighting with LED fixtures. Recessed fixtures can be easily replaced with super energy-efficient LED versions - without any messy construction. “You just take off part of the existing fixture, and the replacement fixture fits into the old housing,” says Rey-Barreau. “LED fixtures have a high initial cost, but the fixture will last literally the lifetime of the project.”

7. Replace your under-cabinet lighting. With long life and super high efficiency, some LED lighting also offers fairly easy installation, including pucks and strips used as under-cabinet lighting. As an added bonus, LED lights will not give off the undesirable heat of incandes-cents.

8. Be realistic in your expectations. While upgrading some or all of your lighting is a good way to improve your energy efficiency, it is not a one-stop solution. “One of the things sometimes misunder-stood is that people assume if they replace all of their incandescent lighting with energy-efficient versions they are going to save this huge amount on their electricity,” says Rey-Barreau.

a balance,” says Nayak. “It’s all about making it personal and add-ing elements that fit your lifestyle and design personality, without breaking the bank.” One great way to make a big impact on a small budget is to mix materials, creating a blend of polished and raw in a room with modern and industrial elements.

“The rustic look will be extremely popular in homes in 2013, as it’s elegant and comfortable,” adds Nayak. “It provides a feeling of richness and warmth, while still being comfortable to actually live in the space.” A great material for achieving the industrial and modern look is reclaimed wood. From frames, to furniture, this aged, repurposed wood can bring richness and a dose of style to any space.

Mixing materials can also mean utilizing different finishes throughout a room. In the kitchen, using contrasting materials makes your space look personalized. Try a mix of wood and painted finishes for a more layered and collected feel. By resisting the urge to perfectly match every piece, you’ll have a space that looks current and works nicely together.

(BPT) - Have you ever stopped to consider how much thought and effort went into the design of the spaces you visit every day? You may not realize it, but your favorite restaurants, neighborhood grocery store and go-to movie theater follow some very specific design principles in order to create a unique space that is both visually appealing and user-friendly.

Much like home designers, commercial architects and interior designers think of spac-es in their totality. To a commercial designer, every area - from the entryway to the public bathrooms to the behind-the-scenes storage areas - must be considered when work-ing on a new project. One way commercial designers help create a unique look and feel throughout public spaces is through the use of repetition. Repeating a pattern, color or texture in more than one area of a space lends a feeling of continuity. -

According to Judd Lord, director of indus-trial design at Delta Faucet Company, this attention to detail makes commercial envi-ronments a great place to look for design inspiration.

“Highly-designed commercial spaces allow people to get a sense of what their

own home may feel like in terms of color palette, textures, combination of materials and accents prior to actually committing to a design,” Lord says. “For example, visiting high-end hotels can provide a great way to ‘live’ in a particular design aesthetic to see if it suits you.”

The next time you stay at a hotel, look for hints of repetition. You may find that the orange sofas in the lobby, for instance, carry through to your guest room pillows or deco-rative accents. Or, perhaps the wrought iron door handles match the window hardware perfectly. The small touches that regularly go unnoticed help to create a distinct sense of place in commercial spaces. -When deciding what design elements to incorporate into a commercial building, designers consider not only how certain aspects can enhance overall design aesthetic, but also how they can be used to promote functionality in the space. For example, when designing an entryway, commercial designers must think about who will be using the space and for what purpose. While a banquet hall designer may prefer curving staircases to help create the feeling of grand luxury suitable for weddings and debutante balls, it is likely that they will also

incorporate an elevator to ensure the space is accessible to all guests.

NEW YORK (AP) – When Renee Pedro bought a house with mid-century dicor, she decided to embrace the look.

Drawing inspiration from the 1963 Philco oven in her kitchen, she began hunting for towels and table linens with a mod ‘60s vibe to complement the appli-ance.

“That oven was my style. My thing,” said Pedro, of Philadelphia.

She was disappointed by the lack of choices, and in 2009 began looking for a way to create her own textiles to decorate the kitchen. “I couldn’t find something that fit my aesthetic, so I decided to make it,” she said.

After a year of looking online, she found a company that would allow her to design her own fabric. Now she runs her own online business, Crashpaddesigns.com, selling tea towels, pillow cases and table linens in mod, bright, geometric or flowered patterns that she designs her-self.

Many companies have begun to offer consumers the chance to create custom fabrics and wallpapers. Advances in print-ing have made it more affordable to cre-ate small runs, and to make high-quality products faster and cheaper, said Aaron

Kirsch, president of Astek Wallcovering Inc. in Van Nuys, Calif.

He sells directly to consumers via his company’s website, Designyourwall.com. The company also makes custom products for the fashion, hospitality and motion picture industries. Demand for the cus-tom products has been steadily rising, Kirsch said.

“Custom wall covering ... has gone bal-listic,” he said.

Homeowners can create their own wall covering for about $6.50 a square foot, he said.

Custom fabrics run about $18 to $30 a yard, said Rysa Pitner, founder of Fabric on Demand in Los Angeles.

Custom options appeal to “individuals who love to author their own stuff,” she said.

You can upload photos, original art-work or computer-generated designs on her company’s website, Fabricondemand.com.

Some manufacturers have designers who help customers develop the look they want. Do-it-yourself designers can usually preview the order online or order a sample piece. It normally takes less than a month for orders to be processed.

The websites also have a wide variety of premade patterns available.

Nile Johnson of Nile Johnson Interior Design in Kennett Square, Pa., said cus-tom pieces help his firm accomplish its goal of creating spaces that reflect a cli-ent’s personality.

“It really helps the interior show and breathe who they are,” he said. “It’s not just pretty. It’s not just functional. It really tells their story.”

Johnson has used the custom printing process to create a window shade depict-ing a child’s favorite story book. He is currently creating wallpaper that corre-sponds to a client’s checkered dishes.

Creating rolls of wallpaper for an accent wall or producing yards of fabric to make cur-tains, bedding or furniture covering allows homeowners to create layers of design that contribute to the look they are after, added Los Angeles designer Kate Albrecht, who runs the website Mrkate.com.

“It’s a layered look where they feel like each little element of a room speaks about their personality,” she said.

“As a designer, you have this idea for a perfect fabric in your mind and some-times you can’t find it. Sometimes that fabric needs to be created.”
