From the RectoryThe Rectory, Matlaske NR11 7AQ 577455

My dear friendsApril has been a busy month in our Parishes. It was lovely to see so many Norfolk Church Tour people enjoying our churches at Baconsthorpe, Barningham Winter and Plumstead on a lovely sunny afternoon. They had tea at Baconsthorpe and over forty came to join us for Choral Evensong. Our thanks to Tessa McCosh and all who helped at the Plant Sale at the Old Rectory on 19 April. Once more, the weather was in our favour and over £1,100 was raised for Baconsthorpe Church. The lunch club will resume on the last Wednesday in May. We didn’t intend to have a break in April but, following a rather bad car accident, Jo and I have been told to take it easy for a bit. Matlaske and Plumstead have historic connections with Merton Priory established in 1117 and a service of Nones will be celebrated in Matlaske connecting all those churches throughout England with this Augustinian Foundation (www.mertonpriory.org/news). We look forward to seeing you all at Barningham Winter Flower Festival on 13-15 May. No offer of help will be refused.

God bless you all.

From the Web Site Plumstead Walk 1uGFm

1. Park in the Street in Plumstead. Make your way westward past the church and flag pole by the phone box. Looking across the fields you’ll see Baconsthorpe water tower to your right.

2. After a short distance you will arrive at a junction where you can see the Plumstead 2000 village sign but head towards Edgefield; then after a few paces take the public bridleway southwards.

3. Keep to the track until it nearly reaches the road where you need to turn sharp right.

4. When you reach the bluebell wood you can

either keep straight on (the dashed route on the map) or turn left keeping to the main track with the wood to your right all the way to the road.

5. Turn right and head up the road until it reaches Plumstead Green.

6. Stop a moment to explore the pond and sit a while. On a hot summer day you may see many types of dragon flies. Head eastwards towards Matlaske and the church at Plumstead.

7. Whilst in the village take a look in and around the church and walk to the other end of the village where you will see the old round yellow AA sign on the east wall of the Old Post Office.

What a glorious month April has been! Walking the dog, always a pleasure, has been a real treat seeing the wild flowers revelling in such a warm spring. Primroses are in profusion, whole hedgerows of hawthorn look as if they are covered with snow, carpets of bluebells grace woodlands, and verges have masses of garlic mustard (Jack-in-the-hedge) and now ramsons (wild garlic) too. And there are other beauties to numerous to mention (dandelions are glorious this year)! All these should stay with us into May and be joined by summer flowers such as hedge parsley in full flower.

In our gardens the birds are frantically seeking food for their young, all of whom have insatiable appetites. Being a

parent bird really is a sacrificial way of life, and after a brood or two they begin to look quite tatty. Help them by replenishing your feeders each day. Hopefully your

bird boxes are inhabited and you will be watching at least blue tits, great tits and robins popping in and out seemingly continuously. You may be lucky in being in the right place at the right time when the young fledge.

When walking in Holt Lowes on these sunny days, watch out for adders. They are sluggish until they warm up in the morning, so they sunbathe to get themselves going. The adder is the only venomous snake in Britain, but they are not aggressive animals. Adders will only use their venom as a last means of defence, usually if caught or trodden on. So just watch your feet! If you have a dog with you off lead, you should be aware that they, too, could stumble upon one.

The sunshine has brought out the butterflies but we do need rain. Gardens are getting so dry that regular watering really does become necessary for new plantings in both flower and vegetable garden. Let’s hope for evening rain, so that we get the best of both worlds, and continue to enjoy this glorious sunshine whilst also seeing the garden flourish! DWA

21 May Sat @ 7:30 pm Plumstead Too – ‘Eyes Front!’ 1uqZ5Plumstead Too have a really special show on at Baconsthorpe Village Hall. A while back (!) many of you may remember the lovely Isla St Clair was on our TV screens regularly – mainly on ‘The Generation Game’ with Larry Grayson it has to be said! However, Scotland knows her as a folk singer with a very beautiful voice… and she is coming to a venue just down the road to treat us to stories and popular songs from the war days. How about that!? Along with Isla will be film maker Patrick King who gives a fascinating and humorous ‘behind the scenes’ look at the making of their award-winning films about music in those days. Using film clips, they illustrate how important songs and music were in people’s daily lives. The rich mix of song, film, funny out-takes and interaction with the audience make for a light-hearted and wonderfully entertaining show. As always, there will be lovely free food, and profits will go to Crossroads Care and The Benjamin Foundation. Go on… come along, bring friends, and have a really brilliant evening! Book ASAP 577539 or 577787. The price for Adults will be £8 and for concessions £7 – worth every penny!

Baconsthorpe covered seating 1uHZP

Following the installation of the play equipment the Parish Council has, from time to time, discussed having covered seating on the Playing Field. It was agreed the monies received from recycling credits be applied for the purchase. The PC has now purchased a Gazebo which has been erected on the Playing Field. Thank you for your support of the recycling banks which has made this possible.Baconsthorpe Plant Sale – 19 Apr 2011 1v4Eg

On the glorious sunny morning people flocked to The Old Rectory Garden for the annual plant swap, sale and coffee morning which raised £1,152. Many thanks must go to David and Tessa McCosh for so generously opening their garden and to Tessa, who has still not fully recovered from surgery on her knees, for the enormous amount of work she puts into raising plants and organising the whole event. With the church in urgent need of approximately

£150,000 worth of repairs all our events need to be supported and thank you so much to every one who came and made this such a successful event yet again. Baconsthorpe Village Hall 1vQWO

The Village Hall has had three very successful Events during April raising over £700. To answer any questions about how our fund raising money is spent, we would like to say that we have had some very essential expenses of over £2,000: a new bunded oil tank and a concrete base and then fill the new tank plus other necessary electrical work so our Fund Raising Events are essential to just keep and repair your Village Hall. We hope you will all continue to support our efforts on your behalf.

Baconsthorpe 200 Club 1vQWP

This month’s winners are: £25 John Seaman (80); £10 Mrs Lubbock (102); £5 Pam Empson (44), Tracy Grand (64). The profit goes towards hall maintenance. Best wishes to Gordon Lambert 1vQWQ

Gordon has recently spent two months in the Norfolk & Norwich hospital. It is good to know that he is now home and making good progress and would like to thank those who sent him cards and get-well messages. We trust that he will soon be restored to full strength, Gordon. Welcome to Baconsthorpe... 1vQWS

Yvonne and Kevin Delany plus Harry the border collie puppy, who have moved in to Strawberry Barn; Ben & Joy Dowman of Lokeside, Hall Lane; Val & John Mears of 10 The Pyghtle; and Sue Turley and Todders the Jack Russell at 6 The Pyghtle. We welcome all these folk and trust they will enjoy their years amongst us. To the many others who have come to live in the village over the past months and not been given a mention in the magazine: we do hope that you, too, have settled in and are enjoying village life. Baconsthorpe – Do you remember Horse Power? 1veVe

James Watt defined one horse power as the work needed to lift 33,000 foot-pounds per minute. This sounds a pretty tall order to me for any horse to achieve and Watt himself admitted that only a really good animal could do it and then only for a short time. Be that as it may, heavy horses were the main motive power on farms prior to the second world war – and to some extent for a few years afterwards. The horse could be used singly as in out photograph when only a light drag rake had to be pulled. A

pair were used for ploughing; three would be needed to pull a binder for corn cutting; and a team of four, six, or more for drawing heavy wagons. The writer believes our picture was taken at the Glebe near Baconsthorpe Rectory in the late 1940s. If anyone knows who the youngsters are please let us know. Arthur PentneyDo you remember a trip to London in July 1952? 1mywT

Thank you, Theresa Courtauld for identifying most of the people in the photo published in the April edition. Please see the web site or ask the editor for details.Church Tours visit to the Benefice – 17 Apr 2011 1vZrP

A group of 64 people visited our churches at North Barningham, Barningham Winter, Plumstead and Baconsthorpe. Tea and cake were served to them at Baconsthorpe and raised £200 for church funds.

Farewell 1viCl

I know that you will all join me in sending our very best wishes to Mr and Mrs Rodney Palmer on their forthcoming move. We shall all miss their thoughtfulness and kindness that they have shown to so many people over the last 13 years. The time that they have given to St Mary’s church, Barningham Winter has been second to none, not only have they raised a vast amount of money for the little church, their expertise on maintaining the church has been invaluable. We hope that they will be happy in their new home and be able to spend lots of time with their family.Congratulations 1viD1

Welcome home to Oli Legge of Wells Farm Cottage. He and his friend left Norwich about a year ago and they cycled all the way to Sri Lanka – a huge achievement (just look at your atlas to see how far this is!). It is great to see him home again and hear of all his adventures. Well done to both of them. Pond Hills – Gravel Pit? 1vel7

The bad news is that the planners still regard Pond Hills as an acceptable site for gravel extraction; the good news is that, as matters stand, they do not propose to allocate it for the time being. There is yet another “Consultation” coming up in May. When it does, everyone who cares about this lovely area is urged to add their voice. Those of you who have already voiced their opinion in previous rounds should automatically be contacted again. New opponents should contact: Director of Planning, Norfolk County Council, County Hall, Martineau Lane, Norwich NR1 2DH or online https://online.norfolk.gov.uk/enquiry/general.aspx?t=0 When you have completed your name and pressed the

Following the success of our Pre-loved Clothes Sale in Hempstead we held a Fashion Show at Pinewood, Bodham and, with the efforts of game ladies, raised the amount of £2,900 for the Macmillan Nurses Fund. Everyone had great fun and I would like to thank all involved; especially the staff of Annie & Boo, Holt. Pamela

Hempstead – Memorial to Henry Mack 1n7Ie

Correction: The gates were made by Keith and Ian Thirtle at Bodham Joinery and hung by George Owen of Plumstead. Sorry for the misappropriation.Pinewood Saxophone Quartet at Hempstead – 1 Apr 2011 1q8YK

The return of ‘Live’ music to Hempstead Village Hall was a welcome and truly successful event. The Pinewood Saxophone Quartet entertained a large and appreciative audience with their wonderful interpretations of songs and melodies; ranging from the classical to ‘popular’ to ‘Irish folk’ and ‘jazz’. Thanks to Ian and Su Summers for their inspiration in booking such a talented ensemble and may the saxophonists return to entertain us again; soon! TSChrissy Godfrey from the group said: We had a great night thank you to all involved.Hempstead – Church Cleaning 75 years on 1v2Bb

All Saints’ Church is Spring Cleaned by a happy band of parishioners who pick up their brooms, mops and dusters to make the place welcoming. Here we see two pictures of the event. The first was taken 75 years ago and the second this year. Those pictured are:1936 L Fuller, Mrs Clark, S West, Unknown,

A big thank you to everyone who helped with the Big Clean in the Church and the tidy-up after the recent building work. It’s not too easy to see but they enjoyed their cup of tea then and now (only now it’s mugs)!

Matlaske Mothering Sunday 1vj4M

Our Benefice service at Matlaske was well attended - with families of all ages. It was good to see young people taking part. Sincere thanks to Mary Wortley for helping Pam gather and prepare traditional flower posies. They were blessed and distributed during the service conducted by the Reverend Michael Cartwright. DEW

The Flag at Plumstead 1uJnj

Next time you drive down Church Street (how often do you do that, I wonder), glance up to admire the latest addition to the scenery – the new flagpole, next to the Church. Civic pride will well up within you, especially if it’s a day when the flag is flying, like St George’s Day (23 April) or the Royal Wedding (you know when, of course). Don’t worry about the expense – it has come out of The Plumstead 2000 Fund (many thanks to its volunteers for raising the money), not from the PC. In due course come and enjoy the opening ceremony, delayed until we tidy up the area around the flag pole into an attractive little corner (see diary event, 7 May on page 12).No rush at Plumstead 1uJoV

It appears that the great British public is not all that keen to grab a seat on Plumstead Parish Council. For the four-year term of office 2011–2015 there are only three nominations for the five places on the PC. So there won’t be any election for parish councillors on 5 May – just for a district councillor, and of course the famous referendum. The indefatigable current Chairman David Ramsbotham is standing again, as is his wife Irene, and recently co-opted Alastair Brown. Good for them! Two more parish councillors for Plumstead will have to be co-opted to make up the numbers – and one of those could be YOU? Give it a thought – better to have cheerful volunteers rather than reluctant conscripts! If interested, please contact David Ramsbotham 577418 [email protected]

Rhubarb is the first spring fruit (though of course it is really a vegetable) so here is a cake recipe which uses it. The recipe is also useful because it is suitable for a gluten-free or wheat-free diet.

Rhubarb Polenta Cake175 g butter, softened200 g caster sugar3 medium eggs, beaten150 g polenta (dried, ground maize)100 g ground almonds1 tsp vanilla extract2 tsp gluten-free baking powder5 or 6 good-sized sticks of rhubarbZest and juice of 1 lemon

• Preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4• Line an 8 inch square cake tin with baking parchment• Cut the rhubarb into small cubes• Cream the butter and 175 g of the sugar until pale and fluffy• Add the beaten egg and polenta and beat again until well combined• Stir in the ground almonds, vanilla extract and baking powder• Fold in the rhubarb and the lemon zest• Pour the cake mixture into the tin and level with the back of a spoon. Bake for

40 minutes or until golden and when a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean – I find the time varies quite a bit

• Meanwhile, prepare the syrup by heating the lemon juice with the remaining 25 g sugar, either in a microwave on high for 2–3 minutes or by boiling in a small saucepan for 1–2 minutes until syrupy

• Make small holes over the surface of the cake with a skewer and pour the warm syrup evenly over the top of the cake whilst still hot

For a dessert, serve warm with cream, ice cream or crème fraiche. For use as a cake, leave to cool before cutting.

A secret is something that you pass on to others one at a time.
