Sing Carols in HempsteadOn Friday 16 Dec at 7 pm for an hour in the Village Hall. Everyone is welcome from within our five villages and beyond – so bring your friends. There will be refreshments.

Aggressive SalesmenOlder people should be aware that there has been an incident of aggressive salesmanship in which a pensioner in Matlaske was persuaded to put down a deposit for double glazing which he did not need. Rather significantly the firm has a name very similar to a well known national company.

Coffee MorningThe first Hempstead coffee and gossip morning in the Village Hall, on the 2nd Dec, has two purposes. It is an opportunity to have a time to chat and exchange ideas over a cup of good coffee (those who come to charcoal drawing know just how good!) and home-made cake. Money raised from this, and a bring and buy stall, will

be donated to the Newsletter whose finances are always precarious. The Newsletter is delivered free so this is a way of giving just a little towards it. We hope people from all villages will be come and that we will all make some new friends. See you there from 10:30 am!

Add content to the NewsletterEveryone can easily add their own News and advertise their Events in the newsletter. There is the tried and trusted way of contacting your village correspondents who are waiting by the phone for your snippet of news. Now there is a new way of adding items to the village web site which, in turn, will be automatically included in the newsletter. All submissions will be moderated so expect a slight delay after posting. Full instructions are available on http://post.ly/wiXx or just get started on www.isdata.co.uk/cgi-bin/post.pl – this web site address will always be on page 2.

Norfolk Village GamesActive Norfolk are looking at getting villages involved with the games by offering a chance to hold a free taster session of a variety of sports and offer financial support to existing activities already taking part.If you would like any further information, have any questions or would like to be involved in the project in anyway do not hesitate to contact Aaron Roberts 07901 588270 [email protected]

A beautiful candlelit service for the whole family. Our Christingle celebrations will include singing, prayers, and the lighting of Christingle candles. The Christingle is an orange, tied with red ribbon, with dried fruits and a lit candle. These are then taken home from the service. The symbolism of the Christingle is as follows: the orange represents the world, the red ribbon indicates the love and blood of Christ, the dried fruits are symbols of God’s creation, and the lit candle symbolises Jesus, the light of the world. There will be collection in aid of The Children’s Society. Please join us!

24 Dec Christmas Eve (Sat) 4:30 pm Crib Service Plumstead Church

The crib service is for the whole family, but especially delightful for children. During the service the Christmas figures will be placed in the crib by some of the children. So near to Christmas Day, this lovely service helps us to focus on the real meaning of Christmas.

The Rectory, Matlaske NR11 7AQ 577455My dear friends

A more-simple ChristmasThe first Christmas I remember was in 1947. I was three years old and there are sights and smells from years ago which still evoke the wonder of Christmas. On Christmas Eve I was taken to Church by my Granny and my Mother for a service – it must have been the Crib Service for I remember being taken to look at the Nativity Scene – the vision is mingled with the smell of wax polish, many candles and incense. To a small child it was full of mystery and in a real sense it still is.Christmas Day was a real family day and all of us had lunch at my Granny’s home. Poultry was a real treat in those far-off days of rationing. Granny knew how to make Christmas special – fuel was in short supply but there was an enormous coal file – the biggest I’d ever seen. There were not huge piles of presents for everyone. I don’t remember what other people had – probably socks or hankies – I had a humming top and probably drove the adults mad as I whizzed all over the room!More than sixty years on, I look back on that rather austere Christmastide with great affection. I knew the Christmas story. I even knew some of the words of a few carols. There didn’t seem to be any of the rather over-the-top celebrations one finds today. We all enjoyed ourselves and we knew what we were celebrating. A baby born for you and me and all mankind. Enjoy your Christmastide celebrations and may the Infant Redeemer smile on you all.Jo joins me in wishing you a Happy and Peaceful Christmas.

God bless you all.

It has been an exceptionally mild autumn, but already signs of winter are to be seen around us. Winter thrushes, such as Fieldfare and Redwing from Scandinavia and other northern parts can be seen

seeking trees and shrubs with berries and remaining fruit. Often these will fly together in large flocks. These birds, along with our native blackbird and thrushes will benefit from berries left on shrubs and unwanted fruit.

A supply of bird seed, nuts (unsalted) and fat will help many of our native birds such as robins, finches, sparrows etc through the winter months. A good pet shop will provide all these and may also provide meal worms, which are a delicacy for robins and blackbirds. It is best to hang food from feeders rather than leave it on an open bird table. Bread is not advised (particularly white bread) unless very dry and crumbled. It swells in

the birds insides and can cause death. If you can leave seeds on garden plants and a few weeds you will be rewarded with loyal visitors to your garden for future months. (You are allowed to do your weeding in the spring – wild excuses again!) Water is of paramount importance in the winter months as many sources may be frozen over.

You may not see much as much activity from mammals, but a review of footprints in the snow can be fun and rewarding!

Hedgehogs are in decline, and any pile of leaves or twigs, old woodpiles etc will provide much needed shelter. It is commonly believed that hedgehogs can be given milk, but milk from cows etc is not suitable and may cause illness. Water and a tin of cat food is acceptable, but as hedgehogs normally spend a long time in hibernation, don’t be disappointed if food is not taken. Have a lovely Christmas and remember the wildlife, but don’t get them too tipsy on left-over Christmas pud! J

Do you remember...... when Baconsthorpe was on TV in 1962? If so, I need your recollections from this programme for a possible future article to commemorate it 50 years on. Did you watch it? were you in it? What do you remember about it? Please contact me on 713280. Thank you.

WelcomeFollowing the near destruction by fire, of two bungalows at The Pyghtle in July 2010 and having watched the subsequent re-build, it is now good to welcome brother and sister Janet and Eddie Amis, into Number 11.Eddie is no stranger to the village, as many years ago when he worked locally, he was a regular customer at The Village Shop, never dreaming that he would one day live here.

We hope that they will spend many happy years amongst us.

Best Wishes Best wishes to John Hardingham who is recovering from another hip replacement operation. He is making steady progress and we hope it won’t be too long before he can return to his favourite pastime of sea and freshwater fishing, neither of which have been possible this past year.

Village Hall NewsA marvellous evening of song fun and laughter by Michael Rushton and Helen was enjoyed by a good crowd who asked when they are coming again, so we hope to have them again in 2012.Our Quiz night was a great success with a £199 profit going towards the upkeep of our Village Hall. Thanks to all who supported us.The Committee would like to wish you all a Very Happy Christmas and New Year. We look forward to your support in 2012.

Baconsthorpe School Closure

It was a sad day for many of us when our local school was forced to close in 1983 through the actions of council officials who failed to realise the benefit a village school education could give the local children. Neither did these officials appear to care about the historical importance of this building as a source of learning for so many years. This National School was one of the oldest in the county, completed in 1816 – one year after the battle of Waterloo. It was built mainly by public subscription and those people who were unable to contribute financially, gave their labour for free by carting building stone from a quarry some two and a half miles away. On completion the school provided much-needed education for 100-plus pupils who were

Hempstead News

Mike WilliamsWith great sadness we record the death of Mike Williams whose kindness and humour has touched us all. Our thoughts are with Mo and her family at this time.

Hempstead Play-Reading GroupAt the last of the season we had a hot supper followed by two instalments of ‘Fawlty Towers’ and a lot of laughter to complete an enjoyable year. Other plays during the year were a Restoration play, an Agatha Christie, ‘The Darling Buds of May’ and Pygmalion. The success of the group is due to the hard work of Su Summers who chooses the plays, organises the books, provides coffee and cake and sorts out which parts we play. Often we play two parts which keeps us on our toes. It’s all very good fun. Betty Hart

Film Club – Breakfast at Tiffany’s A touch of fifties nostalgia! But was it as good as we thought it was? A story of a crazy up market call girl, Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) with a golden heart meets a kept man and budding writer Paul Varjak (George Peppard) also with a golden heart, in swinging New York. Plus an eccentric collection of Holly’s friends/clients.Memorable certainly for Audrey Hepburn’s little black dress, lampshade hat and her cat. Also a ridiculous cameo by Mickey Rooney with false teeth as the irate Japanese neighbour Mr Yunioshi. MRT

Alzheimer Quilt Su Summers would like to thank all those who supported the Alzheimer Quilt fund-raising. The quilt was won by a member of the North Norfolk Orchestral Society. £114 has been forwarded to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Hempstead Poppy AppealThank you to everyone who helped raise £64. Without your help The Royal British Legion would not be able to continue their vital welfare and benevolent work. Diana Spalton

Matlaske News

Thank you Dennis, Rowland, Christina and family wish to thank all who expressed their sympathy on the loss of our dearest Wife and Mother, Pamela. Thank you also to those who gave support during Pam’s illness and the flower arrangers who dressed the church. Thank you all.

Welcome to...... Judith Prosser who has moved into The Old School House and to Georgie, John and the dogs who have moved into The Street. We hope they will enjoy living in Matlaske.

Matlaske Toy Service Many thanks to everyone who made the Toy Service a delightful occasion. The young members of the congregation took a splendid array of gifts to the Altar. The gifts will be taken to the Salvation Army. The closing song, written by Fr Michael, was a great success. It was accompanied by a selection of instruments.

Plumstead News

Gladys HarmerIt is with sadness that we have learnt of the death of Gladys at the age of 97 after a short illness. Gladys was born in Matlaske but her father Walter England was killed in 1916 and her mother then married Ernest Reynolds; so Gladys was brought up in Plumstead and spent her early married life here. Our condolences go to Carrol and Bobby and their family.

A bright and cheery reminder Did you read ‘Opinion’ in the 5 Nov issue of the EDP? If not, you missed a treat: “The red telephone box at the roadside in a village is a quintessentially English sight – a bright and cheery reminder of Britishness. The jolly red of the telephone box brings intensity to the flint of a nearby church, the whitewash of a cottage, or the splash of a village green. In Norfolk it is time for us to take action and safeguard our village phone boxes.”Plumstead has risen to this challenge. Its refurbished red telephone box has now brought intensity to the flint of the nearby church etc etc. Watch out for it next time you drive past!
