Media I: Proficiency- Cut Away Interview
Interviews are great for camera – but may sometimes take a LONG time. To combat, be
prepared to insert reactions and cut-aways – related shots that help enhance the video,
and can also decrease boredom levels.
1. Shoot a video of two people asking and answering a series of three questions.
Make certain to ask OPEN-ENDED questions that start with the word WHY and
cannot be answered succinctly. Record as a wide shot. Pause after each question
and answer.
2. Record the entirety of the interview as a close-up of the person asking questions.
Make sure to pause after each question and answer.
3. Record the entirety of the video as a close-up of the person answering questions.
Pause after each answer.
4. Record about thirty seconds of each person just looking at the other person, and
reacting to questions.
5. Now, import all of the clips.
6. When you are done, edit. Start with the establishing wide shot.
7. Next, intercut video. Never cut audio and video in the same place. Use AT LEAST
one reaction shot for each person.
