As one beautiful sunset serves as a prelude toanother stunning sunrise, it can be easy to takethe Treasure Valley for granted.

Whether you’ve been here for years and years or justmoved here lastmonth,we should thank our lucky starsfor the lifestylewe enjoy. The 2016 Best of Treasure Valley serves as a perfect

reminder for all the shining examples of the things weenjoy about the community inwhichwe live.More than 80,000 voteswere cast in this year’s Best of

Treasure Valley survey and almost 250 businesseswerehonoredwith first-, second- or third-place finishes.Voters took amoment to appreciate all the things

they enjoy about living here. In turn, so did the Best ofTreasure Valley honorees.“I love having dinner in Downtown Boise,” said

Grant Petersen Jr., the president and CEO of BroncoMotors, whichwas voted Best Place to Buy a Car andBestAuto Repair Shop. “I love Bronco basketball andBronco football (Best Sporting Event). I love going fora bicycle ride along Hill Road. I lovemountain bikingin the Foothills.… I love all four seasons, and I love themountains and I love the city. We’ve got a really specialplace that’s unique in theworld.”

The Best of Treasure Valley is broken into five categories. There’s Arts and Entertainment, which singled outAnthony Doerr as BestAuthor and Curtis Stigers asBestMusician/Band.Then there’s Shopping, which covers everything fromBest Grocery Store (WinCo) to Best Local Pet Store(Zamzows). The Services andWeddings category runs the gamut, from Best CarWash (Mister CarWash) to Best BridalShop (David’s Bridal).Outdoors and Sports highlights all the activitiesweenjoy, such as the Best Place to Hike (Boise Foothills),and the shops that help us enjoy them. And finally, there’s Dining, whichwill make anyTreasure Valley resident hungry reading about allthe great options, such as Goodwood BarbecueCompany (Best Local Barbecue) or Shige JapaneseCuisine (Best Sushi).Taken as awhole, the survey shines a light onmany of

the stars that shimmer throughout the Treasure Valley.

BradWilsonmoved to Boise this past fall to becomethe general manager of Bogus Basin (Best Idaho SkiArea). Since then, he’s enjoyed skiing at his favoritenew resort and discoveringwhat the Treasure Valley hasto offer.“Throughout thewintertime Iwentwalking

downtown,”Wilson said. “I live by the Co-op (Best LocalGluten-FreeMenu), so I’m able to justwalk downtown, which is just an amazing experience forme. Just twoweeks ago, I got onmy bike to ride downtown and Iwasthinking, ‘I didn’t even break a sweat before Iwas inthemiddle of the city.’ Itwas so accessible by bike Iwasfloored. So, the accessibility and the bike- andwalking-friendliness of the town are just amazing tome, still.“(Downtown) is just terrific and there’s somuch

energy down there. I have a long list of restaurants togo to.… I’m going to be busy this summer trying all therestaurants.”Luckily forWilson, that list comes in a handy format:

4 | ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT BEST OF TREASURE VALLEY 2016

Stars aboundin the Treasure

Valley. Enjoy someculture or just be

entertained by theseshining examples.

Above left: Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Boise | Above right: Art in the Park, Boise

Ward Hooper is certainly a star of theTreasure Valley arts and entertainmentscene. He has been creating his iconic

artwork in Boise formore than three decades.During that time, he has continued to grow as

an artist, continued to branch out and find newand differentways to express himself.Inmanyways, the Treasure Valley arts and

entertainmentworld hasmirrored Hooper overthe years.“People just have a lot greater variety

of choiceswhen it comes tomusic, art, entertainment, drama, all that kind of stuff, ascompared towhen I started off,” Hooper said.Hooper, whowas voted BestArtist, has created

hundreds and hundreds of his classic imagesover the years. Hismost familiarwork has beendescribed in the style of vintage advertising, andusing that style he has captured the essence ofmany of the things that Idahoans cherish, fromfloating the Boise River to night skiing at Bogus

Basin to biking the Boise Front. But Hooper said hiswork is always evolving.“People knowme for the Boise images, the

Idaho images, but I’m doing a littlemore edgystuff,” he said. “It’s stuff that I’m interested in,maybewith a little sense of humor, a littlemorecutting.”Hiswork can be seen on hiswebsite,

wardhooper.com, or at his gallery at745W. Idaho St.Hooper haswatched Boise evolve from his

downtown gallery.“I’m excited about the growth and the variety,

in general, of themodernization of the downtownarea,” Hooper said. “It’s nice to see some newarchitecture, some new people, more tourists.Iwork and have a business downtown, and Ican’t tell you howmany people I see on a dailybasis that just lovewhat they see and love theexperience. So, that’swhat I’m trying to add to.”Andwhile he personally contributes a great

deal to the Treasure Valley arts and entertainmentworld, he also appreciates the efforts of others –and the support the community provides.“I like theway it’s developing,” Hooper said.

“It’s just good to see that it isn’t neglected. Ifyou’re an upcoming or emerging artist thereis always some kind of opportunity for yousomewhere.”And some artists are seizing that opportunity

and enjoying success beyond the Treasure Valley– fromAnthony Doerr (BestAuthor) to CurtisStigers (BestMusician/Band).But here at home, there’s plenty to take in, from

the Idaho Shakespeare Festival (Best PerformingArts Group) toArt in the Park (Best CommunityEvent).“There’s always something for somebody

to do, any night of theweek,” Hooper said.“Treefort, tome, is a great addition.…Therehas been such an explosion in the arts and theawareness of the arts.”

SHOPPING

Choices, choices, choices. When it comes to shopping in the

Treasure Valley, it’s good to be the decisivetype. Otherwise, all the choices can be a littleoverwhelming.Thankfully, the Best of Treasure Valley voters

have pointed out some of themajor stars of theshoppingworld.Whether you’re looking for some sharp new

shoes or a good deal on a used smart car, theoptions continue to grow and grow.It can be hard for even the store owners to

keep up.Natalie Durham has been the owner of Piece

Unique Clothing Co. (Best LocalWomen’sClothing Store) and Shoez since 1997.She’swatched as the Downtown Boise

shoppingworld has exploded over the years. And, as far as she is concerned, themore themerrier.

“Some of the other owners of the boutiques aregood friends ofmine,” Durham said. “But someof the newer ones I’m not as familiarwith. I’llbewalking down the street and go, ‘Wow, that’sawesome! Somebody new!’”Durham enjoys being a part of Boise’s

shopping scene.“Iwouldn’t have it any otherway,” she said.

“Iwould never be anywhere but DowntownBoise.”And Durham said she enjoys the camaraderie

among the downtown businesses.“When I have a customer from out of town

looking for something Iwill always direct themto that place thatwill best suit their needs,” shesaid. “Everybody has got their own character.”Character is amajor reason that Grant Petersen

Jr. believes his company has been successful forso long.“Our repeat and referral business tells a lot

about howwe take care of our customers,”said Petersen, the CEO and president of BroncoMotors (Best Place to Buy a Car and BestAutoRepair Shop).BroncoMotorswas founded in 1971 at 27th

andMain in Downtown Boise and has sincegrown to six locations throughout the TreasureValley.“One of the things I’mmost proud about is

theway thatwe take care of customers before, during and, most importantly, after the sale,”Petersen said. “I think service after the sale is justas important as the service to earn the customer’sbusiness.”It’s a philosophy that seems to beworking.“We’re a local, family-owned companywith

150 employees,” Petersen said. “We’ve got a 45-year history of investing in the community.”

OUTDOORS

Working indoors can be difficult forTreasure Valley residents. After all, itseems the outsideworld is constantly

taunting and teasing us to get out and play.As the co-owner ofMcU Sports, John Klotz

knows that all toowell.“When they’re notworking peoplewant to go

throw a Frisbee or go to the park or go for a runor ride a bike or go skiing,” Klotz said. And that’swhereMcU’s comes in.McU’s,

whichwas voted Best Local Sporting Goods/Outdoor Gear Store, is all about helping peopleenjoy the outdoors.McU’s has had a starringrole in providing outdoor gear to Treasure Valleyresidents formore than four decades.“It’s a big toy store,” Klotz said. “We sell fun.”And Klotz is all too familiarwith the number

ofways people embrace the Treasure Valley.“It’s just unbelievablewhatwe can do here,”

he said. “People really ride their bikes here year-round, except in certain situations. People golf –

you can see them out on the golf course nine, 10,11months of the year.”“I ridemy bike a lot up in the hills, andwhen

it gets really hot I sneak down to the Greenbeltand spin out 15 or 20miles. There’s peopleeverywhere.”One of those people is BradWilson, who took

over as the general manager of Bogus Basin (BestIdaho SkiArea) prior to last season.“I’ve been riding in the Foothills a lot, and

I’m just amazed at the network of trails,”Wilsonsaid. “No. 1, just the variety of trails, but alsothe quality of the trails. I know everybody heretakes them for granted, but the smooth qualityof the trailswe have in the Foothills, even themountains, it’s something thatmostmountainbikerswould die for elsewhere.Where I camefrom it’s rough and rugged and technical andeverything else. Rarely do you find the nice, swooping turns and terrain likewe have here. It’s been spectacular.”

Wilson said the pastwinterwas alsospectacular for other nice, swooping turns – theones hemade in the fresh snow up at BogusBasin.“Itwas just so fun to explore themountain,”

Wilson said. “It’s really a great skiingmountain, overall. With the variety you have – because youreally have the ability to ski 360 degrees aroundthemountain – you can always find the rightsnow conditions. And, of course, with 2,600acres, there’s a ton of terrain to explore.”
