1.2 Architecture
The Radio Commander is designed as a distributed computing system consisting of aset of components connected via LAN. The architecture is based on the client/serverprinciple, which contributes to system flexibility and robustness.
Within the Radio Commander hardware architecture, the roles are distributed asfollows:
OMP (Operation and Maintenance Processor, the "server")
OMTs (Operation and Maintenance Terminals, the "clients"), typically graphical workstations for (among others)
visualization and control of network elements,
managing the BSS file system, down-/uploading files (software, database) and
collecting measurement data
In addition, the hardware is composed of the following components:
Connection equipment
Hardware for LAN and X.25 / PCM connectivity
LAN Printers
Storage devices
Additional streamer tapes
External disk storage
Radio Commander is scalable in both hardware (multi-server/multi-processor system)and software (distribution of software processes over logical servers, easy extensionof object model etc.) System reliability is improved with load-sharing.
1.2.1 Basics
The hardware of the new Radio Commander is a commercial UNIX-based systemaimed at providing a high a degree of modularity and flexibility.
With a growing number of BSS being connected to the system, the processing powercan be easily extended by
hardware upgrade of the OMP itself (CPU, RAM, hard disk capacity),
use of additional servers (load sharing).
There is no limitation to the number of terminals that can be connected to the OMP.

1.3 OMS-B to BSS Connectivity
The connection between OMC-B and SBS is called OMAL. It can be implemented with (cold standby) redundancy.
1. Connection via PCM- Links
The OMAL (at a transmission rate of 64 kbit/s) is mapped on the BSC site in thePCMS Link, connecting BSC with TRAU and the MSC site.
The OMAL is transferred through the TRAU transparently.
At the MSC the incoming OMAL of several incoming PCMA Links are multiplexed intoa common 2 Mbit/s link (based on the PCM30 structure), which is directly connected
with the OMC.
This implementation is called “nailed up connection“. The OMC can control andsupervise up to 30 BSS.
A Newbridge Sprite E1 board, equipped inside the OMP, implements thiscommunication interface.
2. Connection via Dedicated Line
The connection via dedicated line can be realized in two ways:
dedicated point to point link
connection via a private or public Packet Switched Data Network
At the BSC site the interface is provided by the IXLT board and is based on the X.21/ V.11.
At the OMC an external communication controller, the HSI/PCI interface board, provides the interface.
The X.25 packet switched data network requires special modems to convert the X.21/ V.11 interface into the X.25 protocol, used at the packet switched data network.
A HSI/PCI board can be installed in the servers Sun Enterprise 4500:
HSI/PCI (High-SpeedInterface/Personal ComputerInterface)
offers four X.25 ports, each with max. 2 Mbit/sthroughput, corresponding to 4 x 30 remote systemsat 64 kbit/s per port

1.4 Graphical User Interface
1.4.1 Basics
The Radio Commander supports different network management views. Customizedgeographical maps, on different scales, represent the territorial structure of thenetwork (e.g. nation, region and district).
The new Radio Commander provides a special maintenance view to let the operatorsee at a glance what is going on in the system. Only vital information is displayed, icons are not overloaded with information.
The Navigator supports the operator in navigating through the graphical user
interface and Radio Commander’s network editor. The Navigator can be used totallyindependently of the GUI. Hence, it is possible to directly issue commands via thenavigator panel.
The Network Editor allows flexible customization for GUI online (without reboot ).For basic configuration changes it is also possible to run the Network Editor in stand-alone mode.
The Network Editor supports e.g. "drag & drop" in the customization process. Therange of customization options include
Panel window contents e.g. background, dimensions, graphical objectsrepresented on the panel
Operator-defined network views e.g. new panels, new summary objects
Graphical objects e.g. panel and position in panel, link to managed or externalobject, graphical attributes (line or icon), popup menus

1.5 OMC Tool Set
BSS data are available "on-line" at the OMC-B and (after export) "off-line" for post-processing by the OMC Tool Set OTS.
OTS integrates and replaces the existing tools
SPOTS (performance management PM),
MIXY (configuration CM and fault management FM) and
DUIT (trace management TrM).
Four packages are available which may be used individually or in combination:
FM+ package supports alarm statistics and reporting.
PM+ package provides reports and analysis of performance and trafficmeasurements.
CM+ package enhances CLI and GUI configuration management.
TrM+ package supports IMSI tracing and Cell Traffic Recording CTR.
