MONROEWith a combination of endurance, speed

and depth, the Marvin Ridge High boys track team — which won the 2009 3A state title — was the team to beat in the South-ern Carolina Conference.

The Mavericks lived up to their billing, winning the SCC and Union County titles, led by Chris Colo.

Colo dominated the con-ference in the 1,600 (4 min-utes, 33 seconds) and 3,200 meters (9:30.55), and was also named track athlete of the year for his efforts.

The Mavericks’ Matt Towsend was awarded the field athlete of the year award by the coaches, and Cameron Starr was named coach of the year

to complete the sweep of the top awards by the Mavs.

Michael Colven laid down some strong times in the mid distance events, with a 51.44 in the 400 meter dash and a 1:58.52 in the 800 meter run for tops in the confer-ence in both.

Including those three, the Mavericks placed 11 athletes on the honorary team, the most by any of the schools in the con-ference.

Weddington had the second most ath-letes make the list with eight, led by soph-omore Brandon Little, who put up the top time in all of North Carolina high schools, in the 200 meter dash (21.64) up until the last couple weeks of the season.

He also held the second fastest 100 meter dash time in the state right behind confer-ence foe Andre McManus of Sun Valley, which made for some incredible racing during the year.

Porter Ridge had four fast athletes that made for two of the favorite relay teams in the conference during the season.

Damarrell Alexander, Jordan Oakley, Javonte Truesdale and Aaron Johnson teamed up in the 4x100 and 4x200 races for the Pirates.

Three other Pirates made the honorary squad.

GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) — LeBron James

“I’m looking forward to it,” James said of playing in Mi-ami with fellow Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. “We’re going to be a real good team.”

James arrived at the Boys and Girls Club of America about 8:50 p.m. and entered through a side door.

Frank Sanchez, the vice president for corporate and partner relationships for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, said James approached the or-ganization last weekend about

using its location for his big show.

The TV special was filmed during the pro-cess should raise at least $1 million to help refurbish gyms under a program that James’ foundation will help di-rect, and kids from the Greenwich club were invited to attend the announcement.

In the hours before his choice was revealed, the sports world spun out of control with speculation and rumors. Some

reports said he had told his inner circle he is leaning toward the Mi-ami Heat.

James, Bosh and Wade entered the pros in the same year, the respective Nos. 1, 4 and 5 picks in the 2003 draft. They went their separate ways: James to Cleveland, Bosh to

Toronto and Wade to Miami, where he won a championship partnered with center Sha-quille O’Neal in 2006.

That year, James, Bosh and

Wade all signed matching con-tracts to make sure they were all unrestricted free agents at the same time.

They won gold medals to-gether at the 2008 Beijing Olym-pics, and could now be poised to unite in South Florida.

Season-ticket sales for the Heat’s coming 41-game season were suspended Thursday af-ternoon after the entire sup-ply of available seats were sold out. Not every seat has been released for sale yet and some will be held back for single-game purchases.

WHO’S NEWSGolfer shoots 59 at John Deere Classic

SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Paul Goydos has become just the fourth golfer in PGA Tour history to shoot a 59.

Goydos put together his 12-under, bogey-free round on the opening day of the John Deere Classic. He made the turn at 4-under, birdied all but one hole on the back nine at the

7,257-yard TPC Deere Run course and capped Thursday’s sizzling round by knocking in a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th.

He raised his club to acknowl-edge the roar from the crowd and accepted high-fives on the way to the clubhouse.

“It’s almost a mythical number in our game,” said Goydos, a 46-year-old pro from Dove Canyon, Calif.

It’s the first 59 on the tour since David Duval went that low in a memorable final round at the 1999 Bob Hope Classic.

Duval also was playing in the Deere Classic, beginning his round in the afternoon. The other 59s were by Al Geiberger in 1977 and Chip Beck in 1991.

The crowd grew steadily as Goy-dos’ score kept dropping. Even fellow players Notah Begay and J.J. Henry dropped by to watch his attempt to make history.

The final putt was like most of the others Goydos rolled in with his cross-handed grip — right in the middle of the cup.

“Standing over that last putt, I was probably as nervous as I’ve ever been over a putt in my life,” he said.

“The putt would have gone in thimble.”

ASU to have at least 3 games televised

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — South-ern Conference champion Appala-chian State will have at least three of

its football games telecast as part of the league’s package on Sports-

South. Conference officials announced the lineup Thursday.

Eight games will be broadcast this fall, starting with the Mountaineers facing Chattanooga on Sept. 4 and ending on Nov. 20 with a game to be determined.

League leaders say this year’s schedule will include two wildcard weekends on Nov. 13 and Nov. 20 when the conference and SportsSouth will choose games likely to have the greatest impact on the Southern Conference championship race.

The eight televised games is an increase of one from last season.

Appalachian State will also have its games against Elon on Oct. 9 and Western Carolina on Oct. 23 shown.

ACC-ESPN deal worth $1.86 billion

RALEIGH (AP) — A person familiar with the deal says the 12-year broadcasting agreement between the Atlantic Coast Conference and ESPN is worth $1.86 billion.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because financial terms were not re-leased when the two sides announced the deal Thursday.

The agreement, which begins in the 2011-12 season, gives ESPN exclusive rights to conference football and men’s basketball games and would double the league’s TV revenue.

It also gives ESPN syndication rights that would allow Raycom Sports to carry games and maintain its relationship with the league.

Commissioner John Swofford says the ACC looked into creating its own network, but opted instead to utilize ESPN’s in-place broadcast and multi-media outlets.

CATA has a lot back

NBA superstar will join Wade, Bosh in Miami

By JUSTiN MUrDOcKE-J Sports Writer

MONROEWins have been hard to come by for the Cen-

tral Academy football team in its first three years of existence.

After going winless in its first two seasons, CATA finally broke through with a win in 2009, beating Highland Tech 35-6 on the road in Week 2.

But with 17 starters eligible to return in 2010, Cougars coach Tony Pyland hopes the program will take a turn in the right direction.

Central Academy opens the regular season on Aug. 20 at East Montgomery, which edged CATA 25-22 in the 2009 opener.

The Cougars then take on Highland Tech at home the following week, and Pyland believes his team has a shot to win both contests.

“Both of those ought to be winnable games for us just like they were last year,” said Pyland. “East is kind of like us because they lost some important seniors and then I don’t know about

Highland Tech. They could get a couple new kids and be OK. I just know they lost a lot as far as the kids that I thought impacted the game last year.”

After a bye week on Sept. 3, the Cougars open play in the Rocky River Conference against de-fending champion Monroe High (Sept. 10).

The Cougars are 0-22 all-time in conference games, but had a two-point loss to Union Acad-emy (16-14) last year along with a one-point loss to Cuthbertson (17-16). They also had a four-point loss to North Stanly (22-18).

“I hate to guess how the conference will play out because you never know what each team’s going to do, but if you look at what people lost and what they have coming back, it looks like the conference will be more balanced this year,” said Pyland. “Last year it was a two-tier league, but you just never know.”

The Cougars will have to deal with the loss of graduated quarterback Charvis Barrino, who rushed for 969 yards and 13 TDs last season.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Brazil must learn from South Africa in order to host its own successful World Cup in four years, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Thurs-day.

“The success of our Afri-can brothers represents a tremendous challenge to the Brazilian people,” Silva said at a ceremony to unveil its of-ficial tournament logo.

“We are learning from them to ensure that the 2014 World Cup will be an event that is even better than this one.”

Silva spoke at a colorful and musi-cal show attended by World Cup-win-ning greats Carlos Alberto, Cafu and

Romario, and coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, who led the national team to the fourth of its five titles in 1994.

It was staged at a convention center in a high-end Johannesburg suburb, just a few miles (ki-lometers) from the Soccer City stadium where the final match of South Africa’s tour-nament is played on Sunday between Spain and the Neth-erlands.

Silva said Brazil had a “tremendous responsibility on our shoulders” to match South Africa’s achievement

of hosting the first World Cup on the African continent.

The World Cup has not been played on South American soil since the 1978

edition in Argentina, and not in Bra-zil since 1950.

“We are confident. Brazilians love a challenge,” Silva said.

“You can rest assured that we will present a World Cup as beautiful as 2010.”

Brazil then presented the emblem that will identify world sport’s biggest event for the next four years.

The logo is a representation of the iconic World Cup trophy created by three linked hands in Brazil’s nation-al colors of yellow and green.

The winning design, named “Inspi-ration,” was chosen from among 25 entries submitted to a judging panel that included noted Brazilians Paulo Coelho, the author, and supermodel Gisele Bundchen.

AMSTERDAM (AP) — The Dutch will literally be pray-ing for victory in the World Cup final.

On Sunday morning in the village of Obdam, north of Amsterdam, the Rev. Paul Vlaar and the members of his choir plan to wear or-ange robes for Mass before the Netherlands’ match against Spain kicks off in South Africa.

The candles, piano and even the snacks served with coffee afterward will also bear the national hue.

“I will say a special prayer and talk about the football game in my sermon,” Vlaar said Thursday.

He is expecting only a few hundred people in his small parish church, but the Roman Catholic priest has caught the mood of the nation as it heads to its first

World Cup final in 32 years. The country of the royal

House of Orange is turn-ing more orange than usual. Fans are snapping para-phernalia to show their sup-port: orange wigs, crowns of twisted orange balloons and top-to-toe or-ange clothing are fast disappearing from stores.

The Nether-lands is bidding to win the title for the first time after having finished as runners-up in 1974 and 1978.

Thousands of people tried to find last-min-ute flights to be in South Af-rica for the big match. Most were disappointed.

KLM Royal Dutch Air-lines arranged three special flights from Amsterdam and

one from Paris to carry ex-tra fans to Johannesburg on Saturday.

Wim Gramsma, manager of the Oad Travel Agency which partners the Dutch football association, said 12,000 people applied for

the 1,000 seats that went on sale af-ter Tuesday’s 2-1 semifinal victory over Uruguay.

“Eleven thou-sand real Dutch fans are still wait-ing,” Gramsma said.

He said the of-ficial FIFA ticket

package costs €2,000-€2,500 ($2,520-$3,150), including flights, hotels and trans-portation to the stadium. By contrast, only a handful of tickets were up for sale on Craig’s List for €2,000

($2,530) each.The Uruguay semifinal

broke at least one Dutch re-cord — as the most-watched television program, with 12.3 million viewers in a na-tion of 16.5 million citizens.

Following the match, the city of Amsterdam planned a floating victory parade on Tuesday through a net-work of canals, figuring on more than 2 million people flooding into the city to cel-ebrate. The route was care-fully plotted to avoid the narrow waterways lined with houseboats, which or-ganizers feared could be severely damaged by the crowds.

Even if they lose, the Dutch team will be feted with a massive nationally televised party at Museum Square, the capital’s largest playground.

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson backups Tajh Boyd and Michael Wade slog through hours of quarterback workouts, throwing with team-mates, learning formations and prepping to help the Tigers defend their ACC Atlantic Divi-sion title.

Starter Kyle Parker, mean-while, is taking batting prac-tice swings at Coors Field.

With football camp less than a month away, the biggest ques-tion on campus focuses square-ly on two-sport standout Park-er: Could he give up football for pro baseball?

“It’s definitely in the back of your mind,” said Wade, a high school quarterback twice shifted to defense in his four years with the Tigers. “But it’s not something we talk about a lot, just getting ready for the season.”

No one yet knows what role fifth-year senior Wade or red-shirt sophomore Boyd could play this fall. That’s because Parker’s yet to decide his fu-ture after a visit last week to the Colorado Rockies.

Parker was a freshman star on the football field last year, throwing for 20 touchdowns

and 2,526 yards as Clem-son reached its first ACC title game. Howev-er, Parker was already in the sights of base-ball scouts as a power-hitting outfielder fol-lowing two stellar seasons on the college diamond. Parker enhanced his credentials with 20 homers this year, believed to the first time a Division I player had hit 20 home runs and thrown 20 TDs.

Then last month, the Rockies selected Parker No. 26 overall, high enough that most organi-zations would be pretty sure a prospect wasn’t going to choose football.

“You know, sometimes we’ll joke about how much money he’s going to get,” said Wade, whose father played on Clem-son’s 1981 national champi-ons. “But we don’t think much about what he’s going to do.”

Right now, that’s take a break from a whirlwind year that be-gan with football workouts last summer and ended at the College World Series. Parker’s

mother, Cathy, said he enjoyed his get-to-know-you visit to Denver last weekend as they start the negotiating process.

Tiger baseball coach Jack Leggett said he spoke with Parker after he returned. “I think they showed him what could be expected if he were to sign,” he said. “I think that’s as far as it’s gone right now.”

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney cracked in March that it would take a “Brink’s truck full of money” to lure Parker away from Death Valley. More recently, he put Parker’s chanc-es of returning at “50-50.”

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Purdue’s JaJuan Johnson and Butler’s Shelvin Mack have been named to the USA Men’s Select Team.

USA Basketball an-nounced Thursday that the 20-member team will train against the 2010 USA Men’s National Team later this month in Las Vegas. The squad will help the Ameri-can team prepare for the 2010 FIBA World Champi-onship, slated for Aug. 28-Sept. 12 in Turkey.

Johnson was a second-team All-Big Ten pick last season and was on the Big Ten All-Defensive Team for the second straight year. He averaged 15.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.

Mack averaged 13.1 points and 3.2 assists a game and helped Butler reach the NCAA champi-onship game.

He was an All-Horizon League choice and was named to the All-Tourna-

ment Team at the Final Four.

Tisdale selectedCHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Il-

linois center Mike Tisdale will be part of a USA Bas-ketball select team that will help train the national team for the FIBA World Championships in August in Turkey.

His teammates will in-clude Ohio State’s William Buford, Purdue’s JaJuan Johnson and John Leuer of Wisconsin.

The select team was cho-sen by a committee that in-cludes Illinois coach Bruce Weber, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim and North Caro-lina’s Roy Williams.

The team will be coached by Washington coach Lorenzo Romar and Vil-lanova’s Jay Wright.

The 7-1 Tisdale aver-aged 11.9 points and six re-bounds a game in 36 starts last season for Illinois.

Duke selected hostPRINCETON, N.J. — Na-

tional champion Duke and NCAA tournament teams Kansas State, Gonzaga and Marquette have been selected as the regional hosts for this year’s CBE Classic.

There will be three teams in each of the four regionals and the hosts, regardless of winning or losing, will advance to the semifinals and finals, Nov. 22-23 in Kansas City, Mo., it was announced Thurs-day.

Joining Duke in its re-gional are Princeton and Miami of Ohio; Kansas State hosts James Madi-son and Presbyterian; Marquette hosts Bucknell and Wisconsin-Green Bay; and Gonzaga hosts IUPUI and San Diego State.

The teams not hosting will move to sites where they will all play three more games.

CougarsContinued from Page 1B

Despite the heavy loss, Pyland be-lieves his team will regroup. Among the Cougars’ top returners are ris-ing junior Mitchell Blackburn, who rushed for 688 yards and six TDs last season while also making 89 tackles for the defense. Also back is rising junior John Quintero (59 tackles)

and senior Billy Wil-son, the team’s top returning receiver who also rushed for 6.7 yards per carry and made 42 tackles a season ago.

“The big thing for us is we should be much more bal-anced offensively than last year,” said

Pyland. “We’re still going to run it a whole bunch, but we won’t have one guy running the ball 75 percent of the time.”

Pyland said he hopes to have be-tween 50 and 60 players on the field when including the junior varsity and varsity teams this season.

“Right now we have about 30 (var-sity) kids showing up for workouts, but I don’t know if those numbers will be the same when Aug. 2 rolls around. “We usually don’t know who our freshmen are until mid-June, but it’s even later this year. We’re hoping the freshman class will be around 10-15 kids.”

The Cougars have a scrimmage scheduled at Cox Mill on Aug. 13 starting at 6 p.m.

High school football practice offi-cially starts on Aug. 2.

Parkwood and Sun Valley each had three athletes named to the All-SCC team.

McManus was joined by high jumper Derrick Streater and distance runner Alex Wilson in representing the Spar-tans.

The field was where the Rebels scored many of their points, with Matthew Brantley lead-ing the conference in the shot put and Trey Mobley having a strong year as a discus throw-er.

Marcus Leak contin-ued to be strong in the high jump placing, fifth in the state, and Brant-ley finished third in 3A in the shot put. The two placements gave the Rebels the highest score at the state meet of the three county teams in the 3A class.

Coroner: Former Kentucky star, NBA player committed suicideLEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) —

Mel Turpin, an All-American center dubbed “The Big Dip-per” who led Kentucky to the Southeastern Conference championship in 1984 and played in the NBA, committed suicide Thursday, authorities said. He was 49.

Police and the coroner were called to his North Lexing-ton house on a personal in-jury call and said they found Turpin dead. Coroner Gary Ginn said Turpin took his life, but would not say how. He also would not say whether Turpin left behind a suicide note.

The 6-foot-11 Turpin was an

All-American and All-South-eastern Conference player for the Wildcats from 1980-84.

The center helped lead the Wildcats to three consecutive regular-season SEC titles and Kentucky took the tourna-ment title in 1983-84. He aver-aged a career-high 15.2 points per game that season, making 74.5 percent of his shots.

Turpin went sixth in the NBA draft that included Mi-chael Jordan, Hakeem Olaju-won and Charles Barkley, but never measured up to those future stars.

Turpin was taken by the Washington Bullets, then

traded to the Cleveland Cava-liers. His best season came in 1985-86 when he had 13.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, but he was out of the league four years later.

Turpin also played for the Utah Jazz and the Bullets.

Neighbor Amanda Mc-Fadden said Thursday that Turpin always seemed happy.

“He never looked upset. He kept a smile on his face, just a good person,” she said.

Ginn said Turpin was work-ing as a security guard at the University of Kentucky Hos-pital.

Joe B. Hall, who coached

Turpin at Kentucky, said Turpin was outgoing.

“It’s hard for me to realize that this has happened,” he told the Lexington Herald-Leader. “We loved each oth-er. He was one of my boys. It hurts very deeply to hear this. He was a young man that everyone liked and everyone liked being around.”

Margaret Burrus, his sister, tearfully told reporters out-side her home that her broth-er was diabetic and trying to keep it under control.

“I didn’t know he was de-pressed or anything,” she said. “I would have never

said that he would have done this.”

Turpin was the youngest sibling among six, Burrus said. Just two are still living.

“We had a big family and it’s now whittling away,” she said.

Burrus said Turpin’s wife had a heart condition and authorities said she was not at home at the time of the death.

Turpin was a Lexington na-tive and played at Bryan Sta-tion High School. He played a year at Fork Union prep school in Virginia before en-rolling at Kentucky.

Falcons linebacker suspended 4 gamesATLANTA (AP) — The NFL

has suspended Atlanta Falcons linebacker Robert James for four games for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.

A team spokesman confirms the suspension Thursday.

The 26-year-old James played in only one game and did not record a

tackle. James, from Arizona State, was a fifth-round pick by the Fal-cons in 2008. He missed his rookie season with a concussion.

James’ suspension begins with the Falcons’ Sept. 12 opener at Pittsburgh.

He will be eligible for the Oct. 10 game at Cleveland.

Engram inks with BrownsFree agent receiver Bobby En-

gram has signed with the Cleve-land Browns. Engram had five re-ceptions for 61 yards in five games last season with the Kansas City Chiefs. Engram, a 14-year veteran, had 94 catches for 1,147 yards and six TDs for the Seakhawks in 2007.

DENVER (AP) — Ubaldo Jimenez became the first pitcher to reach 15 wins be-fore the All-Star break in 10 years and Colorado beat St. Louis 4-2 on Thursday.

Jason Giambi went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and Dex-ter Fowler had two hits for the Rockies, who swept the three-game series.

Huston Street worked the ninth for his third save.

Jon Jay doubled twice for the Cardinals.

Jimenez (15-1) was domi-nant over eight innings, al-lowing one run and three hits. He struck out six and walked one.

Chris Carpenter (9-3) gave up nine hits, struck out three and walked two in six innings.

Giants 9, Brewers 3MILWAUKEE — Aubrey

Huff homered and drove in four runs, and rookie Buster Posey homered as San Francisco’s bullpen held on to complete a four-game sweep.

Andres Torres homered in the eighth and Posey homered for the fourth time in the series in the ninth. The Giants outscored the Brewers 36-7 in this series for their first four-game

sweep in Milwaukee.Huff drove in runs with

a single in the first, a two-run homer in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fourth off Brewers starter Manny Parra (3-6) as the Giants built a 6-0 lead.

Dan Runzler (3-0) earned the win getting out of a bas-es-loaded jam in the sixth.

Astros 2, Pirates 0HOUSTON — Roy Oswalt

allowed only a first-inning single to Neil Walker, and Lance Berkman provided the power with two home runs as Houston complet-ed a three-game sweep.

Oswalt’s seventh career shutout and 19th complete game finished the Astros’ third sweep of the season — second over the Pirates, the only team in the NL Central with a worse re-cord than Houston.

His last shutout came in September 2008 against Pittsburgh and his previ-ous complete game was against the Dodgers last July.

The win breaks a career-long, six-game home los-ing streak for Oswalt (6-10), who requested a trade from the team earlier this season.

A: The nominees were announced last week, andthe list of 25 includes 20 who were on last year’s nom-inee list along with five newcomers – Dale Inman, T.Wayne Robertson, Jerry Cook, Jack Ingram and FredLorenzen.

Inman is the longtime crew chief for his cousinRichard Petty and also won a championship withTerry Labonte. Robertson, through his role as a seniorvice president at R.J. Reynolds tobacco company, raised the profile of NASCAR with the Winston spon-sorship of the elite series. Cook is a six-time Modifieddivision champion who went on to become a NASCARofficial. Ingram is the “Iron Man” of the series nowknown as Nationwide, where he was a two-timechampion, and Lorenzen is the Cup circuit’s original“Golden Boy” and a winner of 26 races.

But the majority of the inductees likely will comefrom the 20 who were passed over last year. Tops oneveryone’s list is David Pearson, a three-time Cupchampion and winner of 105 races. Many in the sportbelieve it was a great injustice that he was omittedfrom the inaugural class as he’s regarded as thesport’s most talented driver ever by lots of those who

raced against him and saw him race.Raymond Parks, who passed away several weeks

ago, will be on many short lists this year. His resumelooks somewhat weak on the surface, as he won justone championship as a car owner. It was the first ofthe series now known as Cup, back in 1949. Parks’greatest contribution to the sport was the way he ranhis race teams back in stock car racing’s infancy. Heemployed the best of drivers and mechanics. His carswere immaculate every time they appeared at a racetrack, and he fielded multiple entries at tracks up anddown the Eastern seaboard before dropping out of rac-ing to make money instead of spend it.

Glen Wood, who at age 84 is still active in the sport, deserves serious consideration in the eyes of manyknowledgeable racing folk. He was a stand-out shorttrack driver who went on to transform his familyteam into a NASCAR powerhouse. In the 1970s,David Pearson ruled the superspeedways in Fords andMercuries from the Wood Brothers’ shop in Stuart, Va.

Darrell Waltrip seems like an obvious choice. As adriver, he was articulate and successful, just whatNASCAR needed as it began a strong growth periodand began to attract mainstream fans and sponsors. He won 84 Cup races and three championships, andcontinues to represent the sport as a TV commentator.

And if Waltrip goes in, it would seem only fair thatone of his main rivals, Bobby Allison, be right theretoo. Allison, the 1983 champion and an 84-time win-ner as well, represents what many like best aboutNASCAR. He was a hard worker, fiercely independentand as dedicated to racing as they come.

NOTEBOOKHarvick: New plan ‘paying off’

Sprint Cup points leader Kevin Harvickpadded his lead with a victory in Saturday’sCoke Zero 400 at Daytona InternationalSpeedway, but he said in his winner’s interviewthat he and his No. 29 team at RichardChildress Racing still have work to do if they’regoing to unseat four-time and defending serieschampion Jimmie Johnson.

“I think until somebody beats [Johnson], untilwe get to Homestead and that happens, he’s stillthe guy to beat,” Harvick said. “For us, we’ve justgot to keep working hard. We’re in a fortunateposition with the start to our season, and we’vegot to plan to keep working on our cars andkeep trying to make things better, and hopefullywhen the stress starts with 10 weeks to go, we’llbe as ready as we’ve ever been ... But you neverknow what’s going to happen until you get in[the Chase].”

Harvick also pointed out that the dramaticchanges in the performance of his team and theother two at RCR didn’t happen as quickly as itmight appear.

“I would say it definitely didn’t happen thisyear,” he said. “Most everything happened themiddle of last year. ... [Team owner] Richard[Childress] pulled the trigger on a lot of differentthings, whether it was reorganizing people, whether it was getting us the funds to build newcars. He stepped out on a huge limb to spend themoney to start over with basically four teamshalfway through the year, and it’s paying off nowfor us.”

Earnhardt homage a winnerThe first race for the Nationwide Series’ new

Car of Tomorrow, likely will be remembered morefor its contribution to the Earnhardt family sagathan anything related to car construction.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the race in a No. 3Chevrolet, sporting the blue-and-yellow colors ofWrangler, his late father’s longtime sponsor.

T-shirts and souvenirs with the car’s likenesswere the rage at Daytona, and the win wasimmensely popular, but Earnhardt Jr. insistedin his winner’s interview that he’s done drivingunder his dad’s car number.

“I will never do it,” he said. “I’ll never rethinkit. I’ll never consider it. I think that it’s impor-tant for everybody to know that that’s as con-crete as it gets. I’ll never do it again.

“I enjoyed it. It’s hard for me. It’s a balancingact between you and the public and myself andmy own feelings. …

“It’s such a tough deal. It’s real emotional forme preparing for it and putting it together. IsRick [Hendick, his current car owner] OK withit? Did Rick mind? Is Richard [Childress, hisdad’s car owner] happy with his role? Is Teresa[Earnhardt, his step-mother] truly OK? It’s justso hard to know how everybody feels about it.

“I just want to come race. I just like cool-look-ing cars. This was a cool-looking car. I alwaysloved the scheme. That’s all that mattered tome, was just the scheme. I just love the car. Iwanted to race it once, and I did. …

“I don’t ever want to do it again. And I’llnever change my mind, ever.”

One of the traditional events asthe NASCAR circuit returns to itshome base in Daytona Beach,Fla., for the second trip to tracksacross the country, is a state-of-the-sport press conference withthe NASCAR chairman.

Brian France met with themedia at Daytona InternationalSpeedway last week to talk abouta variety of topics affecting thesport. He didn’t offer any majorannouncements, but here aresome excerpts from his remarks.

On the economy and its effect onthe NASCAR industry:

“I don’t want to have a big dis-cussion about the economy and allthat. The economy is what it is.It’s still difficult. It was difficultsix months ago. It doesn’t appearto have improved much for ourfan base, a lot of our corporatecustomers. That’s sort of the badnews.

“The good news is we’ve got 400different sponsors within thesport. Most of them are renewingtheir sponsorships. It may lookdifferently, but they’re renewingtheir sponsorships.

“The car manufacturers, despite a very difficult climate forthem, have made a lot of improve-ments in their own business mod-els and are more stable. They, as

well, are reinvesting in NASCARfor the long-term. So that’s good.

“I think the other thing that’shappened to us, and it’s probablyhappened to a lot of industries, iswhen things are tough, and we allfeel like we’re in a storm, it’s notas easy as it used to be. Whathappens is you get a chance to bemore self-critical of yourself. …

“Even though there are difficul-ties with the economic climatethat we’re in, it kind of forces youin a good way to look at yourself,to work together closer so you canget a better result in the longrun.”

On any possible changes to theformat of the Chase for the SprintCup:

“We like a playoff-style formatfor sure. It distinguishes us inmotorsports, number one, distin-guishes our national divisionsnumber two. And, number three, the big design is to have playoff-type moments that only can be, inany sport, created when there’s alot on the line at any onemoment. That’s what the essenceof Game 7s, eliminations and allthat are.

“We’ve always had in motor-sports a challenge with thatbecause there’s a continuity issuebecause there are 43 teams.

Nobody can win a winner-take-allscenario. And we have to balancethe body of what you’ve done as adriver across the board. …

“What we’re talking about isenhancing it in a way that willbring out more of the winningmoments, the big moments thathappen in sports. And if there’s away we can do that, and there area couple of ways, we’re going togive that a lot of weight.”

On the decline in TV ratingsdespite lots of action on the track:

“We moved start times [forraces] back out from where moreviewers are back to an earlierstart time. We knew that wouldhave a short-term impact untilour fan base could get a benefitfrom sort of a centralized starttime for most of the events.

“In the short run, there are lesspeople watching at 1:00 [p.m.]than there are at 3:00. You hadthe World Cup; still have theWorld Cup going on. You had avery, very popular WinterOlympics. … We had more compe-tition than even a normal busysports calendar. They’ve had bigmoments, big story lines. If yourecall back in our Vegas race, Ithink that hockey game did a 21share or something in the WinterOlympics directly against us. We

didn’t have that the year before.“Then the economy certainly

plays a role, more so to us thananybody else because we ask ourfans in the big event business tostay longer, drive further, buyhotel rooms and alike as part ofwhat it takes to come to ourevents. That’s why the tracks andjust about everybody in the indus-try has tried to help that situationout by lowering prices, workingwith hotels, restaurants, any-where where they may spendmoney, to be reflective of that.”

On the displays of emotion, onand off the track, that have comeas a result of the “have at it, boys”approach that officials have takenthis year:

“I like it personally. I like theemotion. [I’m] a little less worriedabout what we’re going to do [todrivers]. They always have thesponsorship stuff. It’s not easy forthem. They have to be account-able to a company that has a biginvestment in them.

“It wasn’t like we’re the guysthat like to just put a cap oneverything. Rather things evolve.… We’ll admit if we’ve overregu-lated in certain situations, and Ithink we did. …

“But we like where we’re atnow. We like where we’re going.”
