The audio system uses an ignition switched source of battery current so that the system will only operate when the ignition switch is in the On or Accessory positions. A Compact Disc (CD) changer with a ten disc mag- azine, remote radio switches with six functions mounted to the backs of the steering wheel spokes, and a memory system that automatically stores and recalls up to twenty radio station presets (ten AM and ten FM) and the last station listened to for two drivers are optional factory-installed equipment on this model. Refer to Electrical, Power Seats for more information on the memory system. The audio system includes the following compo- nents: Antenna Compact disc changer (available with RBN sales code radio receivers only) Power amplifier (with premium speaker system only) Radio noise suppression components Radio receiver Remote radio switches Speakers Certain functions and features of the audio system rely upon resources shared with other electronic modules in the vehicle over the Programmable Com- munications Interface (PCI) data bus network.     AUDIO

    DESCRIPTIONAn audio system is standard factory-installed

    equipment on this model. The standard equipmentaudio system includes an AM/FM/cassette (RAS salescode) radio receiver, and speakers in six locations.Several combinations of radio receivers and speakersystems are offered as optional equipment on thismodel. The audio system uses an ignition switchedsource of battery current so that the system will onlyoperate when the ignition switch is in the On orAccessory positions.

    A Compact Disc (CD) changer with a ten disc mag-azine, remote radio switches with six functionsmounted to the backs of the steering wheel spokes,and a memory system that automatically stores andrecalls up to twenty radio station presets (ten AMand ten FM) and the last station listened to for twodrivers are optional factory-installed equipment on

    this model. Refer to Electrical, Power Seats for moreinformation on the memory system.

    The audio system includes the following compo-nents:

    rely upon resources shared with other electronicmodules in the vehicle over the Programmable Com-munications Interface (PCI) data bus network. ThePCI data bus network allows the sharing of sensorinformation. This helps to reduce wire harness com-plexity, internal controller hardware, and componentsensor current loads. At the same time, this system

  • provides increased reliability, enhanced diagnostics,and allows the addition of many new feature capabil-ities. For diagnosis of these electronic modules or ofthe PCI data bus network, the use of a DRB scantool and the proper Diagnostic Procedures manualare recommended.

    The other electronic modules that may affect audiosystem operation are as follows:

    Body Control Module (BCM) - (Refer to 8 -ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL MOD-ULES/BODY CONTROL/CENTRAL TIMER MODUL- DESCRIPTION) for more information.

    Driver Door Module (DDM) (Refer to 8 -ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL MOD-ULES/DRIVER DOOR MODULE - DESCRIPTION)for more information.

    Passenger Door Module (PDM) (Refer to 8 -ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL MOD-ULES/DRIVER DOOR MODULE - DESCRIPTION)for more information.

    The audio system includes the following majorcomponents, which are described in further detailelsewhere in this service information:

    Amplifier - On models equipped with theoptional premium speaker system, an audio poweramplifier is located on the rear floor panel under-neath the left end of the rear seat cushion in the pas-senger compartment.

    Antenna Body and Cable - The most visiblecomponent of the antenna body and cable are theantenna adapter and the antenna cap nut, which arelocated on the top of the right front fender panel ofthe vehicle, near the right end of the cowl plenum.

    Antenna Mast - The antenna mast is a metalrod that extends upward from the antenna body andcable on the top of the right front fender panel of thevehicle, near the right end of the cowl plenum.

    Radio - The radio for this model is located inthe instrument panel center stack area, inboard ofthe instrument cluster and above the heater and airconditioner controls.

    Radio Noise Suppression Ground Strap - Aradio noise suppression ground strap is installedbetween the rear of the engine cylinder head and thedash panel sheet metal in the engine compartment.

    Speaker - The standard speaker systemincludes four speakers in four locations, while thepremium speaker system includes six speakers in sixlocations.

    Hard wired circuitry connects the audio systemcomponents to each other through the electrical sys-tem of the vehicle. These hard wired circuits areintegral to several wire harnesses, which are routedthroughout the vehicle and retained by many differ-ent methods. These circuits may be connected to eachother, to the vehicle electrical system and to the

    audio system components through the use of a com-bination of soldered splices, splice block connectorsand many different types of wire harness terminalconnectors and insulators. Refer to the appropriatewiring information in this service manual for com-plete standard and premium audio system circuitdiagrams. The wiring information includes properwire and connector repair procedures, further detailson wire harness routing and retention, as well aspin-out and location views for the various wire har-ness connectors, splices, and grounds.

    OPERATIONThe audio system components are designed to pro-

    vide audio entertainment and information throughthe reception, tuning and amplification of locallybroadcast radio signals in both the Amplitude Modu-lating (AM) and Frequency Modulating (FM) com-mercial frequency ranges. Electromagnetic radiosignals that are broadcast from a radio stationinduce electrical modulations into the audio systemantenna mast. The antenna body and cable conductthese weak signals from the antenna mast to theradio. The radio then tunes and amplifies these weaksignals into stronger electrical signals that arerequired in order to operate the audio system speak-ers. The speakers convert these electrical signals intoair movement, which reproduces the sounds beingbroadcast by the radio station.

    Some audio systems also offer the user the optionof selecting from and listening to prerecorded audiocassette tapes, audio compact discs, or both. Regard-less of the media type, the audio system componentsprovide the user with the ability to electronicallyamplify and adjust the audio signals being repro-duced by the speakers within the vehicle to suit thepreferences of the vehicle occupants.

    The audio system components operate on batterycurrent received through a fuse in the Junction Block(JB) on a fused ignition switch output (run-acc) cir-cuit so that the system will only operate when theignition switch is in the On or Accessory positions.

    On vehicles that are equipped with the optionalremote radio switches, the BCM receives hard wiredresistor multiplexed inputs from the remote radioswitches. The programming in the BCM allows it toprocess those inputs and send the proper messages tothe radio receiver over the PCI data bus to controlthe radio volume up or down, station seek up ordown, preset station advance, and mode advancefunctions.

    On vehicles equipped with the optional memorysystem, when the DDM receives a Driver 1 or Driver2 memory recall input from the memory switch onthe driver side front door trim panel or a memoryrecall message from the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE)

  • receiver in the PDM, the DDM sends a memoryrecall message back to the radio receiver over thePCI data bus to recall the radio station presets andlast station listened to information.

    See the owners manual in the vehicle glove box formore information on the features, use and operationof each of the available audio systems.

    DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - AUDIO SYSTEMRefer to the appropriate wiring information. The

    wiring information includes wiring diagrams, properwire and connector repair procedures, details of wireharness routing and retention, connector pin-outinformation and location views for the various wireharness connectors, splices and grounds.

    WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIR-BAGS, DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM BEFOREATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERINGCOLUMN, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENTDIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. DISCONNECT AND ISO-LATE THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (GROUND) CABLE,THEN WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE AIRBAG SYS-TEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PER-FORMING FURTHER DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. THISIS THE ONLY SURE WAY TO DISABLE THE AIRBAGSYSTEM. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRE-CAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIR-BAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONALINJURY.

    SPECIAL TOOLS

    AUDIO SYSTEMS

    AMPLIFIER

    DESCRIPTIONModels equipped with the Infinity premium

    speaker package have a separate power amplifierunit. This power amplifier is rated at 180 watts out-put. The power amplifier unit is mounted to the rearfloor panel under the passenger side rear seat cush-ion. The power amplifier unit can be accessed for ser-vice by unlatching and tilting the passenger side rearseat cushion forward.

    The power amplifier unit should be checked ifthere is no sound output noted from the speakers.For diagnosis of the power amplifier, (Refer to 8 -ELECTRICAL/AUDIO/SPEAKER - DIAGNOSISAND TESTING). The power amplifier cannot berepaired or adjusted and, if faulty or damaged, theunit must be replaced.

    OPERATIONThe power amplifier is energized by a fused 12 volt

    output from the radio receiver whenever the radio isturned on. The power amplifier receives the soundsignal inputs for four speaker channels from theradio receiver, then sends the amplified speaker out-puts for each of those channels to the six Infinityspeakers. For complete circuit diagrams, refer to theappropriate wiring information. The wiring informa-tion includes wiring diagrams, proper wire and con-

    nector repair procedures, details of wire harnessrouting and retention, connector pin-out informationand location views for the various wire harness con-nectors, splices and grounds.

    DIAGNOSIS AND TESTINGThe power amplifier unit should be checked if

    there is no sound output noted from the speakers.For diagnosis of the power amplifier, (Refer to 8 -ELECTRICAL/AUDIO/SPEAKER - DIAGNOSISAND TESTING). For complete circuit diagrams, referto the appropriate wiring information. The wiringinformation includes wiring diagrams, proper wireand connector repair procedures, details of wire har-ness routing and retention, connector pin-out infor-mation and location views for the various wireharness connectors, splices and grounds.

    REMOVAL(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

    cable.(2) Unlatch and lift the right rear seat cushion to

    the upright position.(3) Disconnect the two right body wire harness

    connectors from the connector receptacles on theright end of the power amplifier (Fig. 1).

    (4) Remove the three nuts that secure the poweramplifier to the three studs on the floor panel.

    (5) Remove the power amplifier from the threefloor panel studs.

    INSTALLATION(1) Position the power amplifier onto the three

    floor panel studs.(2) Install and tighten the three nuts that secure

    the power amplifier to the three studs on the floorpanel. Tighten the nuts to 11.8 Nm (105 in. lbs.).

    (3) Reconnect the two right body wire harness con-nectors to the connector receptacles on the right endof the power amplifier.

    (4) Lower the right rear seat cushion to the floorpanel.

    (5) Reconnect the battery negative cable.

    DESCRIPTIONThe antenna body and cable are not readily visible

    in their installed positions in the vehicle (Fig. 2). Themost visible component of the antenna body andcable are the antenna adapter and the antenna capnut, which are located on the top of the right frontfender panel of the vehicle, near the right end of thecowl plenum. The antenna body and cable aresecured below the fender panel by the antenna capnut through a prefabricated and dedicated mountinghole in the top of the right front fender. The primarycoaxial antenna cable is then routed beneath thefender sheet metal and through a prefabricated anddedicated cable entry hole in the right cowl sidepanel into the interior of the vehicle. Inside the vehi-cle, the primary coaxial cable is connected to a sec-ondary instrument panel antenna coaxial cable withan in-line connector that is located behind the rightend of the instrument panel. The secondary coaxialcable is then routed behind the instrument panel tothe back of the radio. Vehicles ordered with the radiodelete option have a molded plastic plug installed inthe antenna mounting hole on the right front fender,and a plastic plug installed in the cable entry hole ofthe right cowl side panel in place of the antennabody and cable.

    The factory-installed radio antenna body and cableconsists of the following components:

    Antenna adapter - The antenna adapter issometimes also referred to as the antenna bezel orescutcheon.

    Antenna body - The die cast white metalantenna body is the mating structure between theantenna mast and the primary antenna coaxial cable.

    Antenna cable - This vehicle uses a two-pieceantenna coaxial cable. The primary antenna cable isintegral to the antenna body, and the secondaryantenna cable connects the primary cable to theradio.

    Antenna cap nut - The antenna cap nut is aspecial, bright-plated threaded fastener that capturesthe antenna adapter and retains the antenna body tothe fender sheet metal.

    The components of the radio antenna body andcable cannot be adjusted or repaired. All factory-in-stalled radios automatically compensate for radioantenna trim. Therefore, no antenna trimmer adjust-ment is required or possible after replacing theantenna body and cable or the radio. If an antennabody and cable component is damaged or faulty, itmust be replaced. Other than the primary antennacable, which is integral to the antenna body, the indi-

    OPERATIONThe antenna body and cable connects the antenna

    mast to the radio. The radio antenna is an electro-magnetic circuit component used to capture radio fre-quency signals that are broadcast by localcommercial radio stations in both the AmplitudeModulating (AM) and Frequency Modulating (FM)frequency ranges. These electromagnetic radio fre-quency signals induce small electrical modulationsinto the antenna as they move past the mast. Theantenna body transfers the weak electromagneticradio waves induced into the rigid antenna mast intothe center conductor of the flexible primary antennacoaxial cable. The braided outer shield of theantenna coaxial cable is grounded through both theantenna body and the radio chassis, effectivelyshielding the radio waves as they are conducted tothe radio. The radio then tunes and amplifies theweak radio signals into stronger electrical signals inorder to operate the audio system speakers.

    The antenna body includes an integral flange thatmates with and grounds the antenna body to theunderside of the fender panel sheet metal. Above thefender panel, the antenna body has a short nipplethat is externally threaded to accept the antenna capnut. Inside the nipple is a plastic insulator tube, andinside this insulator is an internally threaded metalreceptacle that accepts the adapter stud on the bot-tom of the antenna mast. The antenna adapterserves as an above fender interface to mount andsecure the antenna body to the vehicle. The antennaadapter is a black molded plastic component thatprovides a functional transition between the top ofthe fender and the antenna cap nut, while concealingthe edges of the antenna mounting hole and protect-ing the painted finish of the fender from marring asthe antenna cap nut is tightened. The adapter isinstalled over and shrouds the threaded nipple of theantenna body, which is installed from under and pro-trudes through the top of the mounting hole in thefender. The antenna cap nut is installed on top of theantenna adapter and tightened onto the externalthreads of the antenna body nipple to effectivelysecure and ground the antenna body to the fender.Three notches on the outer circumference of the capnut are engaged by matching projections of anantenna nut wrench (Special Tool C-4816) to facili-tate the removal and installation of this special fas-tener. Proper tightening of the antenna cap nut iscritical to ensuring proper grounding of the antennabody to the fender sheet metal, which is necessaryfor clear radio signal reception.

    A short length of coaxial cable serves as the pri-mary antenna cable. The center conductor of thecable is connected to the antenna mast receptacle.The outer wire mesh of the cable is connected to andgrounded through the antenna body. One end of theprimary antenna cable is securely crimped to thelower end of the antenna body, while the oppositeend features a simple push/pull-type male coaxialcable connector that serves as the in-line connector tothe instrument panel (secondary) antenna coaxialcable. The primary coaxial cable includes a grommetthat seals the cable to an entry hole in the right cowlside outer panel where the cable passes into the pas-senger compartment of the vehicle. The secondaryantenna cable has a push/pull-type male coaxialcable connector on the radio end, and a push/pull-type female coaxial cable connector on the oppositeend, which serves as the in-line connector to the pri-mary antenna cable. In the passenger compartmentthe primary cable is routed to the lower right side ofthe instrument panel, where it is connected to thesecondary instrument panel antenna cable. Theinstrument panel antenna cable is routed near theinstrument panel wire harness through the instru-ment panel to the radio and is secured to the instru-ment panel structural support with small metalpush-on retainers. This two-piece antenna cablearrangement allows the instrument panel or theantenna body and cable to be removed or installedwithout disturbing the radio.

    DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - ANTENNAThe following four tests are used to diagnose the

    antenna with an ohmmeter: Test 1 - Mast to ground test Test 2 - Tip-of-mast to tip-of-conductor test Test 3 - Body ground to battery ground test Test 4 - Body ground to antenna coaxial cable

    shield test.

DISCONNECT AND ISO-LATE THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (GROUND) CABLE,THEN WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE AIRBAG SYS-TEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PER-FORMING FURTHER DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. THISIS THE ONLY SURE WAY TO DISABLE THE AIRBAGSYSTEM. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRE-CAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIR-BAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONALINJURY.

  • The ohmmeter test lead connections for each testare shown in the illustration (Fig. 3).

    NOTE: This model has a two-piece antenna coaxialcable. Tests 2 and 4 must be conducted in twosteps to isolate an antenna cable problem. First,test the primary antenna cable (integral to theantenna body and cable) from the coaxial cableconnector under the right end of the instrumentpanel near the right cowl side inner panel to theantenna body. Then, test the secondary antennacable (instrument panel antenna cable) from thecoaxial cable connector under the right end of theinstrument panel near the right cowl side innerpanel to the coaxial cable connector at the radio.

    TEST 1Test 1 determines if the antenna mast is insulated

    from ground. Proceed as follows:(1) Disconnect and isolate the antenna coaxial

    cable connector under the right end of the instru-ment panel near the right cowl side inner panel.

    (2) Touch one ohmmeter test lead to the tip of theantenna mast. Touch the other test lead to theantenna cap nut. Check the ohmmeter reading forcontinuity.

    (3) There should be no continuity. If OK, go to Test2. If not OK, replace the faulty antenna body andcable.

    TEST 2Test 2 checks the antenna conductor components

    for an open circuit. This test should be performedfirst on the entire antenna circuit, from the antennamast to the center conductor of the coaxial cable con-

    nector at the radio. If an open circuit is detected,each of the three antenna conductor components(antenna mast, antenna body and primary cable unit,instrument panel antenna secondary cable) should beisolated and tested individually to locate the exactcomponent that is the source of the open circuit. Tobegin this test, proceed as follows:

    (1) Disconnect the instrument panel (secondary)antenna cable coaxial connector from the back of theradio.

    (2) Touch one ohmmeter test lead to the tip of theantenna mast. Touch the other test lead to the centerconductor pin of the instrument panel antenna cablecoaxial connector for the radio. Check the ohmmeterreading for continuity.

    (3) There should be continuity. The ohmmetershould register only a fraction of an ohm resistance.High or infinite resistance indicates a damaged oropen antenna conductor. If OK, go to Test 3. If notOK, isolate and test each of the individual antennaconductor components. Replace only the faultyantenna conductor component.

    TEST 3Test 3 checks the condition of the vehicle body

    ground connection. To begin this test, proceed as fol-lows:

    (1) This test must be performed with the batterypositive cable disconnected from the battery. Discon-nect and isolate both battery cables, negative cablefirst.

    (2) Reconnect the battery negative cable.(3) Touch one ohmmeter test lead to a good clean

    ground point on the vehicle fender. Touch the othertest lead to the battery negative terminal post. Checkthe ohmmeter reading for continuity.

    (4) There should be continuity. The ohmmetershould register less than one ohm resistance. High orinfinite resistance indicates a loose, corroded, ordamaged connection between the battery negativeterminal and the vehicle body. If OK, go to Test 4. Ifnot OK, check the battery negative cable connectionto the vehicle body and the radio noise suppressionground strap connections to the engine and the vehi-cle body for being loose or corroded. Clean or tightenthese connections as required.

    TEST 4Test 4 checks the condition of the connection

    between the antenna coaxial cable shield and thevehicle body ground as follows:

    (1) Disconnect and isolate the antenna coaxialcable connector under the right end of the instru-ment panel near the right cowl side inner panel.

    (2) Touch one ohmmeter test lead to a good cleanground point on the vehicle fender. Touch the other

  • test lead to the outer crimp on the antenna coaxialcable connector under the right end of the instru-ment panel near the right cowl side inner panel.Check the ohmmeter reading for continuity.

    (3) There should be continuity. The ohmmetershould register less than one ohm resistance. High orinfinite resistance indicates a loose, corroded, ordamaged connection between the antenna body andthe vehicle body or between the antenna body andthe antenna coaxial cable shield. If not OK, clean theantenna body to fender mating surfaces and tightenthe antenna cap nut to specifications.

    (4) Check the resistance again with an ohmmeter.If the resistance is still more then one ohm, replacethe faulty antenna body and cable.

    ANTENNA BASE AND LEAD

    REMOVAL(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

    cable.(2) Remove the scuff plate from the right front

    door sill. (Refer to 23 - BODY/INTERIOR/DOORSILL SCUFF PLATE - REMOVAL) for the proce-dures.

    (3) Remove the trim panel from the right innercowl side.(Refer to 23 - BODY/INTERIOR/COWLTRIM - REMOVAL) for the procedures.

    (4) Reach under the passenger side of the instru-ment panel near the right cowl side inner panel todisconnect the antenna coaxial cable connector bypulling it apart while twisting the metal connectorhalves (Fig. 4). Do not pull on the cable.

    (5) Remove the lower rear half of the inner linerfrom the right front fender wheel house. (Refer to 23- BODY/EXTERIOR/FRONT FENDER - REMOVAL)for the procedures.

    (6) Reach through the rear of the right frontfender wheel house opening to access and unseat theantenna lead grommet from the hole in the rightcowl side outer panel.

    (7) Pull the antenna lead coaxial cable and connec-tor out of the passenger compartment and into theright front fender wheel house through the hole inthe right cowl side outer panel.

    (8) Unscrew the antenna mast from the antennabase (Fig. 5).

  • (9) Remove the plastic shroud from the antennabase cap nut.

    (10) Remove the antenna base cap nut using anantenna nut wrench (Special Tool C-4816) (Fig. 6).

    (11) Remove the antenna escutcheon from theantenna base on the top of the right front fender.

    (12) Lower the antenna base from the mountinghole in the top of the right front fender.

    (13) Remove the antenna base and lead from therear of the right front fender wheel house opening.

    INSTALLATION(1) Position the antenna base and lead into the

    rear of the right front fender wheel house opening.(2) Insert the antenna base into the mounting hole

    in the top of the right front fender.(3) Install the antenna escutcheon onto the

    antenna base on the top of the right front fender.(4) Install and tighten the antenna base cap nut

    using an antenna nut wrench (Special Tool C-4816).Tighten the cap nut to 6.8 Nm (60 in. lbs.).

    (5) Install the plastic shroud onto the antennabase cap nut.

    (6) Install and tighten the antenna mast onto theantenna base. Tighten the antenna mast to 3.3 Nm(30 in. lbs.).

    (7) Reach through the rear of the right frontfender wheel house opening to access and insert theantenna lead coaxial cable and connector into the

    passenger compartment through the hole in the rightcowl side outer panel.

    (8) From the right front fender wheel house, seatthe antenna lead grommet into the hole in the rightcowl side outer panel.

    (9) Install the lower rear half of the inner linerinto the right front fender wheel house. (Refer to 23 -BODY/EXTERIOR/FRONT FENDER - INSTALLA-TION) for the procedures.

    (10) Reach under the passenger side of the instru-ment panel near the right cowl side inner panel toreconnect the antenna coaxial cable connector halves.

    (11) Install the trim panel onto the right innercowl side. (Refer to 23 - BODY/INTERIOR/COWLTRIM - INSTALLATION) for the procedures.

    (12) Install the scuff plate onto the right front doorsill. (Refer to 23 - BODY/INTERIOR/DOOR SILLSCUFF PLATE - INSTALLATION) for the proce-dures.

    (13) Reconnect the battery negative cable.

    CD CHANGER

    DESCRIPTIONA factory-installed Compact Disc (CD) changer fea-

    turing a ten-CD magazine is an available option onthis model when it is also equipped with the pre-mium speaker package and a radio receiver includingthe CD controls feature. The CD changer is mountedin the cargo area of the passenger compartment onthe right rear quarter panel. It is concealed behind amolded plastic bin with an integral hinged and latch-ing lid that matches the interior trim of the vehicle.

    The CD changer is connected to a take out fromthe right body wire harness and receives both groundand radio-switched battery current through the radioreceiver. The controls on the radio receiver operatethe CD changer through messages sent over the Pro-grammable Communications Interface (PCI) data busnetwork. The two-channel audio outputs of the CDchanger are hard wired back to the radio receiver,which then outputs the signal through four channelsto the power amplifier. For diagnosis of the messag-ing functions of the radio receiver and the CDchanger, or of the PCI data bus, a DRB scan tool andthe proper Diagnostic Procedures manual arerequired.

    The CD changer can only be serviced by an autho-rized radio repair station. See the latest WarrantyPolicies and Procedures manual for a current listingof authorized radio repair stations. Refer to theappropriate wiring information. The wiring informa-tion includes wiring diagrams, proper wire and con-nector repair procedures, details of wire harnessrouting and retention, connector pin-out information

  • and location views for the various wire harness con-nectors, splices and grounds.

    OPERATIONThe CD changer will only operate when the igni-

    tion switch is in the On or Accessory positions, andthe radio is turned on. For more information on thefeatures, loading procedures and radio control func-tions for the operation of the CD changer, see theowners manual in the vehicle glove box.

    DIAGNOSIS AND TESTINGFollowing are tests that will help to diagnose the

    hard wired components and circuits of the CompactDisc (CD) changer unit. However, these tests may notprove conclusive in the diagnosis of this unit. Inorder to obtain conclusive testing of the CD changerunit, the Programmable Communications Interface(PCI) data bus network, the CD changer unit, theradio receiver unit and any other electronic modulesthat provide inputs to, or receive outputs from theaudio system must be checked.

    The most reliable, efficient, and accurate means todiagnose the CD changer messaging functionsrequires the use of a DRB scan tool and the properDiagnostic Procedures manual. The DRB scan toolcan provide confirmation that the PCI data bus isfunctional, that all of the electronic modules in thevehicle are sending and receiving the proper mes-sages on the PCI data bus, and that the CD changerand the radio receiver are receiving the proper PCImessages to perform their audio system functions.

    For complete circuit diagrams, refer to the appro-priate wiring information. The wiring informationincludes wiring diagrams, proper wire and connectorrepair procedures, details of wire harness routingand retention, connector pin-out information andlocation views for the various wire harness connec-tors, splices and grounds.

    COMPACT DISC CHANGER INOPERATIVE(1) Turn the ignition switch to the On position.

    Turn the radio receiver on and check its operation. IfOK, go to Step 2. If not OK, (Refer to 8 - ELECTRI-CAL/AUDIO/RADIO - OPERATION).

    (2) Turn the ignition switch to the Off position.Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.

    Disconnect the right body wire harness connectorfrom the CD changer connector receptacle. Check forcontinuity between the power ground (Z17) circuit ofthe right body wire harness connector for the CDchanger and a good ground. There should be continu-ity. If OK, go to Step 3. If not OK, repair the openpower ground circuit to the radio receiver asrequired.

    (3) Reconnect the battery negative cable. Check forbattery voltage at the B(+) circuit cavity of the rightbody wire harness connector for the CD changer. IfOK, go to Step 4. If not OK, go to Step 5.

    (4) Turn the ignition switch to the On position.Check for battery voltage at the ignition switch out-put circuit cavity of the right body wire harness con-nector for the CD changer. If OK, use a DRB scantool and the proper Diagnostic Procedures manual forfurther diagnosis. If not OK, go to Step 6.

    (5) Disconnect and isolate the battery negativecable. Remove the radio receiver from the instrumentpanel. Disconnect the DIN cable connector (C4) fromthe radio receiver, but do not disconnect the otherwire harness connectors. Reconnect the battery neg-ative cable. Check for battery voltage at the B(+) cir-cuit cavity of the DIN connector receptacle on theradio receiver. If OK, repair the open B(+) circuit tothe CD changer as required. If not OK, check for ashorted B(+) circuit to the CD changer and repair asrequired, then replace the faulty radio receiver.

    (6) Turn the ignition switch to the Off position.Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.Remove the radio receiver from the instrumentpanel. Disconnect the DIN cable connector (C4) fromthe radio receiver, but do not disconnect the otherwire harness connectors. Reconnect the battery neg-ative cable. Turn the ignition switch to the On posi-tion. Check for battery voltage at the ignition switchoutput circuit cavity of the DIN connector receptacleon the radio receiver. If OK, repair the open ignitionswitch output circuit to the CD changer as required.If not OK, check for a shorted ignition switch outputcircuit to the CD changer and repair as required,then replace the faulty radio receiver.

    NO SOUND OR ONLY ONE CHANNEL SOUNDFROM CD

    (1) Turn the ignition switch to the On position.Turn the radio receiver on and check its audio outputoperation. If OK, go to Step 2. If not OK, (Refer to 8- ELECTRICAL/AUDIO/SPEAKER - OPERATION).

    (2) Disconnect and isolate the battery negativecable. Disconnect the right body wire harness connec-tor from the CD changer connector receptacle.Remove the radio receiver from the instrumentpanel. Disconnect the DIN cable connector (C4) fromthe radio receiver. Check for continuity between the

  • audio ground (Z4) circuit cavity of the right bodywire harness connector for the CD changer and agood ground. There should be no continuity. If OK, goto Step 3. If not OK, repair the shorted audio ground(Z4) circuit as required.

    (3) Check for continuity between the audio ground(Z4) circuit cavity of the right body wire harness con-nector for the CD changer and the audio ground (Z4)circuit pin of the DIN cable connector for the radioreceiver. There should be continuity. If OK, go toStep 4. If not OK, repair the open audio ground (Z4)circuit as required.

    (4) Check for continuity between the audio outright circuit cavity of the right body wire harnessconnector for the CD changer and a good ground.There should be no continuity. If OK, go to Step 5. Ifnot OK, repair the shorted audio out right circuit asrequired.

    (5) Check for continuity between the audio outright circuit cavity of the right body wire harnessconnector for the CD changer and the audio out rightcircuit pin of the DIN cable connector for the radioreceiver. There should be continuity. If OK, go toStep 6. If not OK, repair the open audio out right cir-cuit as required.

    (6) Check for continuity between the audio out leftcircuit cavity of the right body wire harness connec-tor for the CD changer and a good ground. Thereshould be no continuity. If OK, go to Step 7. If notOK, repair the shorted audio out left circuit asrequired.

    (7) Check for continuity between the audio out leftcircuit cavity of the right body wire harness connec-tor for the CD changer and the audio out left circuitpin of the DIN cable connector for the radio receiver.There should be continuity. If OK, replace the faultyCD change. If not OK, repair the open audio out leftcircuit as required.

    REMOVAL(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

    cable.(2) Release the latch and open the lid of the com-

    pact disc changer storage bin on the right side quar-ter trim panel (Fig. 7).

    (3) Remove the two screws that secure the top ofcompact disc changer storage bin to the right sidequarter trim panel.

    (4) Grasp the bottom of the compact disc changerstorage bin firmly with both hands and lift itupwards to disengage the four hook formations thatsecure the bin from the right side quarter trim panel.

    (5) Remove the compact disc changer storage binfrom the right side quarter trim panel.

    (6) Disconnect the right body wire harness connec-tor from the connector receptacle on the forward endof the compact disc changer (Fig. 8).

    (7) Remove the four nuts that secure the compactdisc changer to the four studs on the right side quar-ter inner panel.

  • (8) Remove the compact disc changer from theright side quarter inner panel.

    INSTALLATION(1) Position the compact disc changer onto the four

    studs on the right side quarter inner panel.(2) Install and tighten the four nuts that secure

    the compact disc changer to the four studs on theright side quarter inner panel. Tighten the nuts to6.8 Nm (60 in. lbs.).

    (3) Reconnect the right body wire harness connec-tor to the connector receptacle on the forward end ofthe compact disc changer.

    (4) Position the compact disc changer storage binonto the right side quarter trim panel.

    (5) Align the four hook formations on the compactdisc changer storage bin with the slots in the rightside quarter trim panel.

    (6) Using both hands push the compact discchanger storage bin firmly and evenly toward theright side quarter trim panel far enough to engagethe hooks on the bin with the slots in the panel.

    (7) Using both hands push the compact discchanger storage bin firmly and evenly downward farenough to align the screw holes in the bin with themounting holes in the right side quarter trim panel.

    (8) Install and tighten the two screws that securethe top of the compact disc changer storage bin to theright side quarter trim panel. Tighten the screws to1.7 Nm (15 in. lbs.).

    (9) Close the lid of the compact disc changer stor-age bin.

    (10) Reconnect the battery negative cable.

    INSTRUMENT PANELANTENNA CABLE

    REMOVAL

    (1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negativecable.

    (2) Remove the scuff plate from the right frontdoor sill. (Refer to 23 - BODY/INTERIOR/DOORSILL SCUFF PLATE - REMOVAL) for the proce-dures.

    (3) Remove the trim panel from the right innercowl side. (Refer to 23 - BODY/INTERIOR/COWLTRIM - REMOVAL) for the procedures.

    (4) Reach under the passenger side of the instru-ment panel near the right cowl side inner panel todisconnect the antenna coaxial cable connector bypulling it apart while twisting the metal connectorhalves. Do not pull on the cable.

    (5) Disengage the antenna cable retainer from themounting hole in the wire harness mounting tabunder the passenger side end of the instrumentpanel.

    (6) Remove the radio receiver from the instrumentpanel. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/AUDIO/RADIO -REMOVAL) for the procedures.

    (7) Remove the passenger side airbag module fromthe instrument panel. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/RESTRAINTS/PASSENGER AIRBAG - REMOVAL)for the procedures.

    (8) Disengage the antenna cable retainer from themounting hole in the top of the radio mount on theinstrument panel structural duct (Fig. 9).

    (9) Disengage the antenna cable from the locatortabs on the top of the instrument panel structuralduct above the glove box opening.

    (10) Remove the antenna cable from the instru-ment panel.

    INSTALLATION(1) Position the antenna cable onto the instrument

    panel.(2) Engage the antenna cable with the locator tabs

    on the top of the instrument panel structural ductabove the glove box opening.

    (4) Install the passenger side airbag module ontothe instrument panel. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/RESTRAINTS/PASSENGER AIRBAG - INSTALLA-TION) for the procedures.

    (5) Install the radio receiver onto the instrumentpanel. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/AUDIO/RADIO -INSTALLATION) for the procedures.

    (6) Engage the antenna cable retainer into themounting hole in the wire harness mounting tabunder the passenger side end of the instrumentpanel.

    (7) Reach under the passenger side of the instru-ment panel near the right cowl side inner panel toreconnect the antenna coaxial cable connector halves.

    (8) Install the trim panel onto the right inner cowlside. (Refer to 23 - BODY/INTERIOR/COWL TRIM -INSTALLATION) for the procedures.

    (9) Install the scuff plate onto the right front doorsill. (Refer to 23 - BODY/INTERIOR/DOOR SILLSCUFF PLATE - INSTALLATION) for the proce-dures.

    (10) Reconnect the battery negative cable.

    RADIO

    DESCRIPTIONAvailable factory-installed radio receivers for this

    model include an AM/FM/cassette (RAS sales code),an AM/FM/cassette/3-band graphic equalizer with CDchanger control feature (RBN sales code), or anAM/FM/CD/cassette/3-band graphic equalizer (RAZsales code). All factory-installed radio receivers,except the RAS sales code, can communicate on theProgrammable Communications Interface (PCI) databus network through a separate wire harness connec-tor. All factory-installed receivers are stereo Electron-ically Tuned Radios (ETR) and include an electronicdigital clock function.

    These radio receivers can only be serviced by anauthorized radio repair station. See the latest War-ranty Policies and Procedures manual for a currentlisting of authorized radio repair stations.

    All factory-installed radios are readily identifiableby a three-digit alphabetical sales code, which isimprinted on the face plate lens just below a Pen-tastar logo (Fig. 10).

    All vehicles are equipped with an Ignition-OffDraw (IOD) fuse that is removed when the vehicle isshipped from the factory. This fuse feeds variousaccessories that require battery current when theignition switch is in the Off position, including the

    clock. The IOD fuse is removed to prevent batterydischarge during vehicle storage.

    When removing or installing the IOD fuse, it isimportant that the ignition switch be in the Off posi-tion. Failure to place the ignition switch in the Offposition can cause the radio display to become scram-bled when the IOD fuse is removed and replaced.Removing and replacing the IOD fuse again, with theignition switch in the Off position, will correct thescrambled display condition.

    The IOD fuse should be checked if the radio orclock displays are inoperative. The IOD fuse islocated in the Power Distribution Center (PDC).Refer to the fuse layout label on the underside of thePDC cover for IOD fuse identification and location.

    OPERATIONThe radio receiver operates on ignition switched

    battery current that is available only when the igni-tion switch is in the On or Accessory positions. Theelectronic digital clock function of the radio operateson fused battery current supplied through the IODfuse, regardless of the ignition switch position.

    For more information on the features, setting pro-cedures, and control functions for each of the avail-able factory-installed radio receivers, see the ownersmanual in the vehicle glove box. For complete circuitdiagrams, refer to the appropriate wiring informa-tion. The wiring information includes wiring dia-grams, proper wire and connector repair procedures,details of wire harness routing and retention, connec-tor pin-out information and location views for thevarious wire harness connectors, splices and grounds.

    DIAGNOSIS AND TESTINGIf the vehicle is equipped with the optional remote

    radio switches located on the steering wheel and theproblem being diagnosed is related to one of thesymptoms listed below, be certain to check theremote radio switches and circuits. (Refer to 8 -

    CAUTION: The speaker output of the radio receiveris a floating ground system. Do not allow anyspeaker lead to short to ground, as damage to theradio receiver may result.

    (1) Check the fused B(+) fuse in the junction block.If OK, go to Step 2. If not OK, repair the shorted cir-cuit or component as required and replace the faultyfuse.

    (2) Check for battery voltage at the fused B(+) fusein the junction block. If OK, go to Step 3. If not OK,repair the open fused B(+) circuit to the Power Dis-tribution Center (PDC) fuse as required.

    (3) Check the fused ignition switch output (acc/run) fuse in the junction block. If OK, go to Step 4. Ifnot OK, repair the shorted circuit or component asrequired and replace the faulty fuse(s).

    (4) Turn the ignition switch to the On position.Check for battery voltage at the fused ignition switchoutput (acc/run) fuse in the junction block. If OK, goto Step 5. If not OK, repair the open fused ignitionswitch output (acc/run) circuit to the ignition switchas required.

    (5) Turn the ignition switch to the Off position.Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.Remove the radio receiver from the instrumentpanel, but do not disconnect the wire harness connec-tors. Check for continuity between the radio receiverchassis and a good ground. There should be continu-ity. If OK, go to Step 6. If not OK, repair the openground circuit to ground as required.

    (6) Test the radio receiver antenna. (Refer to 8 -ELECTRICAL/AUDIO/ANTENNA BODY & CABLE -DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING). If OK, go to Step 7. Ifnot OK, replace the faulty antenna or coaxial cableas required.

    (7) Connect the battery negative cable. Turn theignition switch to the On position. Check for batteryvoltage at the fused ignition switch output (acc/run)circuit cavity of the left (gray) radio wire harnessconnector. If OK, go to Step 8. If not OK, repair theopen fused ignition switch output (acc/run) circuit tothe junction block fuse as required.

    (8) Turn the ignition switch to the Off position.Check for battery voltage at the fused B(+) circuitcavity of the left (gray) radio wire harness connector.If OK, replace the faulty radio receiver. If not OK,repair the open fused B(+) circuit to the junctionblock fuse as required.

    REMOVAL

    (1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negativecable.

    (2) Remove the center upper bezel from the instru-ment panel.(Refer to 23 - BODY/INSTRUMENTPANEL - REMOVAL).

    (3) Remove the four screws that secure the radioreceiver to the instrument panel (Fig. 11).

    (4) Pull the radio receiver out from the instrumentpanel far enough to access the instrument panel wireharness connectors and the antenna coaxial cableconnector.

    (5) Disconnect the instrument panel wire harnessconnectors and the antenna coaxial cable connectorfrom the receptacles on the rear of the radio receiver.

    (6) Remove the radio receiver from the instrumentpanel.

    (2) Reconnect the instrument panel wire harnessconnectors and the antenna coaxial cable connectorto the receptacles on the rear of the radio receiver.

    (3) Position the radio receiver into the mountinghole in the instrument panel.

    (4) Install and tighten the four screws that securethe radio receiver to the instrument panel. Tightenthe screws to 2.2 Nm (20 in. lbs.).

    (5) Install the center upper bezel onto the instru-ment panel. (Refer to 23 - BODY/INSTRUMENTPANEL - INSTALLATION) for the procedures.

    (6) Reconnect the battery negative cable.

    RADIO NOISE SUPPRESSIONGROUND STRAP

    DESCRIPTIONRadio Frequency Interference (RFI) and Electro-

    Magnetic Interference (EMI) noise suppression isaccomplished primarily through circuitry internal tothe radio receivers. These internal suppressiondevices are only serviced as part of the radio receiver.

    External suppression devices that are used on thisvehicle to control RFI or EMI noise include the fol-lowing:

    Radio antenna base ground Radio receiver chassis ground wire or strap Engine-to-body ground strap(s) Exhaust system-to-body and transmission

    ground strap (4.7L engines only) Resistor-type spark plugs Radio suppression-type secondary ignition wir-

    ing.For more information on the spark plugs and sec-

    ondary ignition components, refer to Ignition Systemin Ignition System.

    REMOVAL - ENGINE-TO-BODY GROUNDSTRAP

    (1) Remove the screw that secures the engine-to-body ground strap eyelet to the lower plenum panel(Fig. 12) or (Fig. 13).

    (2) On models with a 4.0L engine, remove the nutthat secures the engine-to-body ground strap eyeletto the stud on the right rear side of the engine cyl-inder head.

    (3) On models with a 4.7L engine, remove the twonuts that secure the engine-to-body ground strap eye-lets to the studs on the right and left rear sides ofthe engine intake manifold.

    (4) Remove the engine-to-body ground strap eye-let(s) from the stud(s) on the engine.

    (5) Remove the engine-to-body ground strap fromthe engine compartment.

    REMOVAL - EXHAUST-TO-BODY GROUNDSTRAP

    (1) Raise and support vehicle.(2) Remove fasteners from exhaust, crossmember

    and transmission/transfer case.(3) Remove the ground strap.

    (1) Position the engine-to-body ground strap intothe engine compartment.

    (2) Install the engine-to-body ground strap eye-let(s) onto the stud(s) on the engine.

    (3) On models with a 4.0L engine, install andtighten the nut that secures the engine-to-bodyground strap eyelet to the stud on the right rear sideof the engine cylinder head. Tighten the nut to 5.6Nm (50 in. lbs.).

    (4) On models with a 4.7L engine, install andtighten the two nuts that secure the engine-to-bodyground strap eyelets to the studs on the right andleft rear sides of the engine intake manifold. Tightenthe nuts to 11.3 Nm (100 in. lbs.).

    (5) Install and tighten the screw that secures theengine-to-body ground strap eyelet to the lower ple-num panel. Tighten the screw to 4.5 Nm (40 in. lbs.).

    INSTALLATION - EXHAUST-TO-BODY GROUNDSTRAP

    (1) Install the ground strap to the exhaust, cross-member and transmission/transfer case.

    (2) Install the fasteners.

    (3) Lower the vehicle.

    REMOTE SWITCHES

    DESCRIPTIONRemote radio control switches are included on

    models equipped with the optional leather-wrappedsteering wheel. The two rocker-type switch units(Fig. 14) are mounted in the upper spoke covers ofthe rear (instrument panel side) steering wheel trimcover. The switch unit on the left side is the seekswitch and has seek up, seek down, and preset sta-tion advance switch functions. The switch unit on theright side is the volume control switch and has vol-ume up, volume down, and mode advance switchfunctions.

    The two remote radio switch units are eachretained in a mounting hole located on opposite sidesof the rear steering wheel trim cover by four integralsnap features. A plastic bracket on the back of eachswitch unit provides additional support for the unitby extending towards the center of the steeringwheel where it is clamped between the steeringwheel armature and the steering wheel rear trim

    The two remote radio switch units share a commonsteering wheel wire harness with the vehicle speedcontrol switches. The steering wheel wire harness isconnected to the instrument panel wire harnessthrough the clockspring. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/RESTRAINTS/CLOCKSPRING - DESCRIPTION) formore information on this component.

    For complete circuit diagrams, refer to the appro-priate wiring information. The wiring informationincludes wiring diagrams, proper wire and connectorrepair procedures, details of wire harness routingand retention, connector pin-out information andlocation views for the various wire harness connec-tors, splices and grounds.

    OPERATIONThe six switches in the two remote radio switch

    units are normally open, resistor multiplexedmomentary switches that are hard wired to the BodyControl Module (BCM) through the clockspring. TheBCM sends a five volt reference signal to both switchunits on one circuit, and senses the status of all ofthe switches by reading the voltage drop on a secondcircuit.

    When the BCM senses an input (voltage drop) fromany one of the remote radio switches, it sends theproper switch status messages on the ProgrammableCommunication Interface (PCI) data bus network tothe radio receiver. The electronic circuitry within theradio receiver is programmed to respond to these

    remote radio switch status messages by adjusting theradio settings as requested. For diagnosis of theBCM or the PCI data bus, the use of a DRB scan tooland the proper Diagnostic Procedures manual arerecommended.

    For more information on the features and controlfunctions for each of the remote radio switches, seethe owners manual in the vehicle glove box.

    DIAGNOSIS AND TESTINGFor complete circuit diagrams, refer to the appro-

    (1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negativecable. Remove the remote radio switch(es) (Fig. 15)from the steering wheel.

    (2) Use an ohmmeter to check the switch resis-tances as shown in the Remote Radio Switch Testchart. If the remote radio switch resistances checkOK, go to Step 3. If not OK, replace the faultyswitch.

    (3) Reconnect the battery negative cable. Turn theignition switch to the On position. Check for 5 voltsat the radio control mux circuit cavities of the steer-ing wheel wire harness connectors for both remoteradio switches. If OK, go to Step 4. If not OK, repairthe open or shorted radio control mux circuit to theBody Control Module (BCM) as required.

    (4) Disconnect and isolate the battery negativecable. Disconnect the 22-way instrument panel wireharness connector from the BCM. Check for continu-ity between the remote radio switch ground circuitcavities of the steering wheel wire harness connec-tors for both remote radio switches and a goodground. There should be no continuity. If OK, go toStep 5. If not OK, repair the shorted remote radioswitch ground circuit to the BCM as required.

    (5) Check for continuity between the remote radioswitch ground circuit cavities of the steering wheelwire harness connectors for both remote radioswitches and the 22-way instrument panel wire har-ness connector for the BCM. There should be conti-nuity. If OK, refer to the proper DiagnosticProcedures manual to test the BCM and the PCIdata bus. If not OK, repair the open remote radioswitch ground circuit as required.

    REMOVAL

    (1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negativecable.

    (2) Remove the driver side airbag module from thesteering wheel. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/RE-STRAINTS/DRIVER AIRBAG - REMOVAL) for theprocedures.

    (3) Remove the speed control switch located on thesame side of the steering wheel as the remote radioswitch that is being serviced. Refer to Electrical,Speed Control for the procedures.

    (4) Disconnect the steering wheel wire harnessconnector from the connector receptacle of the remoteradio switch (Fig. 16).

    (5) From the inside of the steering wheel rear trimcover, press firmly and evenly outward on the back ofthe switch to disengage the four snap features thatsecure the switch to the inside of the mounting hole.

    (6) From the outside of the steering wheel reartrim cover, remove the remote radio switch from thetrim cover mounting hole.

    (1) Position the remote radio switch to the mount-ing hole on the outside of the steering wheel reartrim cover. Be certain that the connector receptacle isoriented toward the bottom of the switch and pointedtoward the center of the steering wheel.

    (2) Press firmly and evenly on the remote radioswitch until each of the switch snap features is fullyengaged in the mounting hole of the steering wheelrear trim cover.

    (3) Reconnect the steering wheel wire harness con-nector to the connector receptacle of the remote radioswitch.

    (4) Install the speed control switch onto the steer-ing wheel. Refer to Electrical, Speed Control for theprocedures.

    (5) Install the driver side airbag module onto thesteering wheel. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/RE-STRAINTS/DRIVER AIRBAG - INSTALLATION) forthe procedures.

    (6) Reconnect the battery negative cable.

    SPEAKER

    DESCRIPTION

    STANDARDThe standard equipment speaker system includes

    speakers in six locations. One 6.4 centimeter (2.50inch) diameter tweeter is installed on each end of theinstrument panel top pad. One 15.2 by 22.9 centime-ter (6 by 9 inch) full-range speaker is located in eachfront door. There is also one full-range 16.5 centime-ter (6.5 inch) diameter full-range speaker located ineach rear door.

    PREMIUMThe optional premium speaker system features six

    Infinity model speakers in six locations. Each of thestandard speakers is replaced with Infinity modelspeakers. One 6.4 centimeter (2.50 inch) diameterInfinity tweeter is installed on each end of theinstrument panel top pad. One 15.2 by 22.9 centime-ter (6 by 9 inch) Infinity woofer is located in eachfront door. There is also one full-range 16.5 centime-ter (6.5 inch) diameter Infinity full-range speaker

    located in each rear door. The premium speaker sys-tem also includes an additional Infinity power ampli-fier. The total available power of the premiumspeaker system is about 180 watts.

    OPERATION

    STANDARDEach of the two tweeters and four full-range speak-

    ers used in the standard speaker system is driven bythe amplifier that is integral to the factory-installedradio receiver.     CAUTION: The speaker output of the radio is afloating ground system. Do not allow any speakerlead to short to ground, as damage to the radiomay result.

    (1) Turn the ignition switch to the On position.Turn the radio receiver on. Adjust the balance and

  • fader controls to check the performance of each indi-vidual speaker. Note the speaker locations that arenot performing correctly. Go to Step 2.

    (2) Turn the radio receiver off. Turn the ignitionswitch to the Off position. Disconnect and isolate thebattery negative cable. Remove the radio receiverfrom the instrument panel. If the vehicle is equippedwith the Infinity speaker package, also disconnectthe wire harness connectors at the power amplifier.Check both the speaker feed (+) circuit and return ()circuit cavities for the inoperative speaker location(s)at the radio receiver wire harness connectors for con-tinuity to ground. In each case, there should be nocontinuity. If OK, go to Step 3. If not OK, repair theshorted speaker feed (+) and/or return () circuit(s) tothe speaker as required.

    (3) If the vehicle is equipped with the Infinityspeaker package, go to Step 6. If the vehicle isequipped with the standard speaker system, checkthe resistance between the speaker feed (+) circuitand return () circuit cavities of the radio receiverwire harness connectors for the inoperative speakerlocation(s). The meter should read between 2 and 12ohms (speaker resistance). If OK, go to Step 4. If notOK, go to Step 5.

    (4) Install a known good radio receiver. Connectthe battery negative cable. Turn the ignition switchto the On position. Turn on the radio receiver andtest the speaker operation. If OK, replace the faultyradio receiver. If not OK, turn the radio receiver off,turn the ignition switch to the Off position, discon-nect and isolate the battery negative cable, removethe test radio receiver, and go to Step 5.

    (5) Disconnect the wire harness connector at theinoperative speaker. Check for continuity betweenthe speaker feed (+) circuit cavities of the radioreceiver wire harness connector and the speaker wireharness connector. Repeat the check between thespeaker return () circuit cavities of the radioreceiver wire harness connector and the speaker wireharness connector. In each case, there should be con-tinuity. If OK, replace the faulty speaker. If not OK,repair the open speaker feed (+) and/or return () cir-cuit(s) as required.

    (6) For each inoperative speaker location, check forcontinuity between the speaker feed (+) circuit cavi-ties of the radio receiver wire harness connectors andthe power amplifier wire harness connectors. Repeatthe check for each inoperative speaker locationbetween the speaker return () circuit cavities of theradio receiver wire harness connectors and the poweramplifier wire harness connectors. In each case,there should be continuity. If OK, go to Step 7. If notOK, repair the open speaker feed (+) and/or return() circuit(s) as required.

    (7) Check for continuity between the two groundcircuit cavities of the power amplifier wire harnessconnector and a good ground. There should be conti-nuity. If OK, go to Step 8. If not OK, repair the openground circuit(s) to ground as required.

    (8) Check the fused B(+) fuse for the power ampli-fier in the junction block. If OK, go to Step 9. If notOK, repair the shorted circuit or component asrequired and replace the faulty fuse.

    (9) Install the radio receiver. Connect the batterynegative cable. Check for battery voltage at the fusedB(+) fuse for the power amplifier in the junctionblock. If OK, go to Step 10. If not OK, repair theopen fused B(+) circuit to the Power DistributionCenter (PDC) fuse as required.

    (10) Check for battery voltage at the two fusedB(+) circuit cavities of the power amplifier wire har-ness connector. If OK, go to Step 11. If not OK, repairthe open fused B(+) circuit(s) to the power amplifierfuse in the junction block as required.

    (11) Turn the ignition switch to the On position.Turn the radio receiver on. Check for battery voltageat the enable signal to amplifier circuit cavity of thepower amplifier wire harness connector. If OK, go toStep 12. If not OK, repair the open enable signal toamplifier circuit to the radio receiver as required.

    (12) Turn the radio receiver off. Turn the ignitionswitch to the Off position. Disconnect and isolate thebattery negative cable. For each inoperative speakerlocation, check both the amplified feed (+) circuit andthe amplified return () circuit cavities of the poweramplifier wire harness connectors for continuity toground. In each case there should be no continuity. IfOK, go to Step 13. If not OK, repair the shortedamplified feed (+) and/or amplified return () cir-cuit(s) to the speaker as required.

    (13) For each inoperative speaker location, checkthe resistance between the amplified feed (+) circuitand the amplified return () circuit cavities of thepower amplifier wire harness connectors. The metershould read between 2 and 12 ohms (speaker resis-tance). If OK, replace the faulty power amplifier. Ifnot OK, go to Step 14.

    (14) Disconnect the speaker wire harness connec-tor at the inoperative speaker. Check for continuitybetween the amplified feed (+) circuit cavities of thespeaker wire harness connector and the power ampli-fier wire harness connector. Repeat the checkbetween the amplified return () circuit cavities ofthe speaker wire harness connector and the poweramplifier wire harness connector. In each case thereshould be continuity. If OK, replace the faultyspeaker. If not OK, repair the open amplified feed (+)and/or amplified return () circuit(s) as required.

  • REAR DOOR SPEAKER

    REMOVAL(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

    cable.(2) Remove the trim panel from the rear door.

    (Refer to 23 - BODY/DOORS - REAR/TRIM PANEL -REMOVAL) for the procedures.

    (3) Remove the three screws that secure thespeaker to the rear door inner panel (Fig. 17).

    (4) Pull the speaker away from the rear door innerpanel far enough to access the rear door wire harnessconnector.

    (5) Disconnect the rear door wire harness connec-tor from the speaker connector receptacle.

    (6) Remove the speaker from the rear door innerpanel.

    INSTRUMENT PANEL SPEAKER

    REMOVAL(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

    cable.(2) Remove the top cover from the instrument

    panel. (Refer to 23 - BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL/INSTRUMENT PANEL TOP COVER - REMOVAL).

    (3) Disconnect the instrument panel wire harnessconnector from the speaker wire harness connector(Fig. 18).

    (4) Remove the two screws that secure the speakerto the top of the instrument panel.

    (5) Remove the speaker from the top of instrumentpanel.

    FRONT DOOR SPEAKER

    REMOVAL(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

    cable.(2) Remove the trim panel from the front door.

    (Refer to 23 - BODY/DOOR - FRONT/TRIM PANEL -REMOVAL) for the procedures.

    (3) Remove the four screws that secure thespeaker to the front door inner panel (Fig. 19).

    (4) Pull the speaker away from the front doorinner door panel far enough to access the front doorwire harness connector.

    (5) Disconnect the front door wire harness connec-tor from the speaker connector receptacle.

    (6) Remove the speaker from the front door innerpanel.

    INSTALLATION - REAR DOOR SPEAKER(1) Position the speaker to the rear door inner

    panel.(2) Reconnect the rear door wire harness connector

    to the speaker connector receptacle.

  • (3) Position the speaker onto the rear door innerpanel.

    (4) Install and tighten the three screws that securethe speaker to the rear door inner panel. Tighten thescrews to 2.2 Nm (20 in. lbs.).

    (5) Install the trim panel onto the rear door. (Referto 23 - BODY/DOORS - REAR/TRIM PANEL -INSTALLATION) for the procedures.

    (6) Reconnect the battery negative cable.

    INSTALLATION - INSTRUMENT PANELSPEAKER

    (1) Position the speaker onto the top of the instru-ment panel.

    (2) Install and tighten the two screws that securethe speaker to the top of the instrument panel.Tighten the screws to 2.2 Nm (20 in. lbs.).

    (3) Reconnect the instrument panel wire harnessconnector to the speaker wire harness connector.

    (4) Install the top cover onto the instrument panel.(Refer to 23 - BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL/IN-STRUMENT PANEL TOP COVER - INSTALLA-TIONl for the procedures.

    (5) Reconnect the battery negative cable.

    INSTALLATION - FRONT DOOR SPEAKER(1) Position the speaker to the front door inner

    panel.(2) Reconnect the front door wire harness connec-

    tor to the speaker connector receptacle.(3) Position the speaker onto the front door inner

    door panel.(4) Install and tighten the four screws that secure

    the speaker to the front door inner panel. Tightenthe screws to 2.2 Nm (20 in. lbs.).

    (5) Install the trim panel onto the front door.(Refer to 23 - BODY/DOOR - FRONT/TRIM PANEL -INSTALLATION) for the procedures.

    (6) Reconnect the battery negative cable.

    CHIME WARNING SYSTEM

    DESCRIPTIONA chime warning system is standard factory-in-

    stalled equipment on this model (Fig. 1). The chimewarning system uses a single chime tone generatorthat is integral to the Body Control Module (BCM) toprovide an audible indication of various vehicle con-ditions that may require the attention of the vehicleoperator. The chime warning system includes the fol-lowing major components, which are described in fur-ther detail elsewhere in this service manual:

    Body Control Module - The Body ControlModule (BCM) is located on the Junction Block (JB)underneath the driver side end of the instrumentpanel. The BCM contains an integral chime tone gen-erator, integrated circuitry, a central processing unitand the programming to provide all of the properchime warning system features based upon the mon-itored inputs. The BCM circuitry monitors hardwired switch inputs, as well as message inputsreceived from other vehicle electronic modules on theProgrammable Communications Interface (PCI) databus network.

  • Door Ajar Switch - A door ajar switch is inte-gral to the driver side front door latch. This switchprovides an input to the chime warning system indi-cating whether the driver side front door is open orclosed.

    Headlamp Switch - The headlamp switch isintegral to the left multi-function switch on the leftside of the steering column. The headlamp switchprovides an input to the chime warning system indi-cating when the exterior lamps are turned On or Off.

    Ignition Switch - A key-in ignition switch isintegral to the ignition switch. The key-in ignitionswitch provides an input to the chime warning sys-tem indicating whether a key is present in the igni-tion lock cylinder.

    Seat Belt Switch - A seat belt switch is inte-gral to the driver side front seat belt buckle-halfunit. The seat belt switch provides an input to thechime warning system indicating whether the driverside front seat belt is fastened.

    Hard wired circuitry connects many of the chimewarning system components to each other throughthe electrical system of the vehicle. These hard wiredcircuits are integral to several wire harnesses, whichare routed throughout the vehicle and retained bymany different methods. These circuits may be con-nected to each other, to the vehicle electrical systemand to the chime warning system componentsthrough the use of a combination of soldered splices,splice block connectors, and many different types ofwire harness terminal connectors and insulators.Refer to the appropriate wiring information. The wir-ing information includes wiring diagrams, properwire and connector repair procedures, further detailson wire harness routing and retention, as well aspin-out and location views for the various wire har-ness connectors, splices and grounds.

    The BCM chime warning system circuitry and theintegral chime tone generator cannot be adjusted orrepaired. If the BCM or the chime tone generator aredamaged or faulty, the BCM unit must be replaced.

    OPERATIONThe chime warning system is designed to provide

    an audible output as an indication of various condi-tions that may require the attention or awareness ofthe vehicle operator. The chime warning system com-ponents operate on battery current received throughthe Ignition-Off Draw (IOD) fuse in the Power Distri-bution Center (PDC) on a non-switched fused B(+)circuit so that the system may operate regardless ofthe ignition switch position.

    The chime warning system provides an audibleindication to the vehicle operator under the followingconditions:

    Fasten Seat Belt Warning - The Body ControlModule (BCM) chime tone generator will generaterepetitive chime tones at a slow rate to announcethat a hard wired input from the seat belt switchindicates that the driver side front seat belt is notfastened with the ignition switch in the On position.Unless the driver side front seat belt is fastened, thechimes will continue to sound for a duration of aboutsix seconds each time the ignition switch is turned tothe On position or until the driver side front seat beltis fastened, whichever occurs first.

    Head/Park Lights-On Warning - The BCMchime tone generator will generate repetitive chimetones at a fast rate to announce that a Programma-ble Communications Interface (PCI) data bus driverdoor ajar message received from the Driver DoorModule (DDM), along with hard wired inputs fromthe headlamp switch (left multi-function switch) andthe ignition switch, indicate that the exterior lampsare turned On with the driver side front door openedand the ignition switch in the Off position. Thechimes will continue to sound until the exteriorlamps are turned Off, the driver side front door isclosed, or the ignition switch is turned to the Onposition, whichever occurs first.

    Key-In-Ignition Warning - The BCM chimetone generator will generate repetitive chime tones ata fast rate to announce that a PCI data bus driverdoor ajar message received from the DDM, alongwith hard wired inputs from the key-in-ignitionswitch (ignition switch) and the ignition switch, indi-cate that the key is in the ignition lock cylinder withthe driver side front door opened and the ignitionswitch in the Off position. The chimes will continueto sound until the key is removed from the ignitionlock cylinder, the driver side front door is closed, orthe ignition switch is turned to the On position,whichever occurs first.

    Overspeed Warning - The BCM chime tonegenerator will generate repetitive chime tones at aslow rate to announce that a PCI data bus vehiclespeed message received from the Powertrain ControlModule (PCM) indicates that the vehicle speed isabove 120 kilometers-per-hour (75 miles-per-hour).The chimes will continue to sound until the vehiclespeed message indicates that the vehicle speed isbelow 120 kilometers-per-hour (75 miles-per-hour).This feature is only enabled on a BCM that has beenprogrammed with a Middle East Gulf Coast Country(GCC) country code.

    Tactile Beep Support - The BCM chime tonegenerator will generate a single beep tone each timea PCI data bus tactile beep request message isreceived from the Electronic Vehicle Information Cen-ter (EVIC) or the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module(SKIM). This beep tone provides an audible confirma-

  • tion that an EVIC button was completely depressed,or that the optional Sentry Key Immobilizer System(SKIS) is in the Customer Learn mode, which isused for programming additional sentry key tran-sponders.

    Warning Beep Support - The BCM chime tonegenerator will generate a short series of beep toneseach time a PCI data bus warning beep request mes-sage is received from the EVIC or the Electro-Me-chanical Instrument Cluster (EMIC). These beeptones provide an audible alert to the vehicle operatorthat supplements certain visual warning indicationsdisplayed by the EVIC an
