The term “recipe”, when used for switchcontrol,referstoasetofinstruc7onsthatcanbe sent toa switch, inorder forapar7cularoutcome. A recipe is used to access thetabletwithaswitch that replacesagesturesor series of gestures when you cannotac7vatethetabletinatypicalfashion.

The first thing I do is to set myaccessibilityShortcut, so I canmoveinandoutofswitchac7va7oneasily.

StepsForUsingRecipes

Next,Isetupmyswitches.

First,makesureyourswitchinterfaceisconnected.

Atthispoint, Imakeassignmentstomyswitches. I typicallyusetheApplicatorswitchinterface from Pretorian/Inclusive TLC although the other interfaceswork in a similarfashion.Forthisexample,theswitchassignmentsIpreferare5(space)inchannel/jack1and6(enter)inchannel/jack2.

Chooseyourdefaultac7on.Inthisexample,Iwantedtoalsousemyswitchesfortwoswitchscanning,soIpickedmyfirst(red)switchtobethestepaheadswitchandmysecond(yellow)switchtobemychoosingswitch.

ConfiguringSwitches

Onceyourswitchassignmentsarecompleted,youcanmakeyourrecipe.

ForthePictellorecipe,Idecidedtojusthavetwoac7ons. Onewouldreadthepage,andonewould turn thepage forward. For this par7cular app, I found I needed to tap thescreeninthemiddleofthepagetoreadit,andIneededtoswipefromrighttoleVtoturnthepageahead.Fortherecipe,Isimplyassignedmytwoswitchestotheseac7ons.

Thenmaketheswitchassignments.I’llbeusingtheswitchesthatIpreviouslyconfigured.Rememberthatwhenyoucreatearecipe,youwillbetellingyourswitchestododifferentthingsthanyoufirstestablishedWHENTHERECIPEISENABLED.Whenyouturntherecipeoff,theseswitcheswillgobacktotheiroriginalac7ons.

Inthisexample,myREDswitch,whichhasanexis7ngassignmentof5/movetonextselec4onwillnowbetolditwilltapthecenterofthescreen.

MyYELLOWswitch,whichhasanexis7ngassignmentof6/selectitemwillbereassignedtoswipefromrighttoleV.

Tap“AssignaSwitch” Chooseswitch,andthenassignment.RememberthatyouhavetohavealreadysetupswitchesinyouriPadwhenyougettothisstep.REDandYELLOWaresimplythenamesIgavemyswitcheswhenIfirstaEachedthemtomyiPad.

Whenyouarereadytousethenewrecipe,youhaveto“launch”it.Pressingtheswitchatthatpointwillcausetheswitchestobehaveintheirnewassignments.Inthisexample,myREDswitchwillnowtapthemiddleofthescreenandmyYELLOWswitchwillswipefromrighttoleVtoturnthepageahead.ThisworkswellforPictello.

Whenyouarefinished,andwantyourswitchestobehaveintheirnormalfashion(suchasforacommunica7ondevice,simplygobackto“LaunchRecipe”andchoose“none”.

Anoteaboutcustomgestures…

Recipescanlearncustomgestures,whichmeansyoucanrememberamovementanywhereonthescreen. Since theApplicatorhas4 switch jacks,youcouldpoten7allyhave4differentthingsthatthe switches could do. This would be useful ifyou had a 4 message display, and you wantedswitchestosay4differentthings.Ifinditeasiestto set this up by using a clear overlay to markwhere it is I want to touch. Then, when I amassigning a custom gesture, I can touch thescreenwithcertaintyintheareaIwantac7vated(orwithamovement,suchasaswipe).

Remember,youcanturnswitchaccessonandoffeasilyviathe“AccessibilityShortcut”.Onceyouhaveassignedit,simplytripleclicktheiPad’sHomebuEontoseethemenuyouneed.
