RR Donnelley P. 143 – scheduling success Knowing the skills needed and recruiting to meet the

needs was key for this international printing company. (HR !)

Facilities were in 200 locations/18,00 users. They were in the process of a major IT changeover-hardware, network architecture and standardizing an Email system. (IT Mgr.)

Creating task lists and using the WBS to identify (PM) relationships. Scheduling in identifiable sections.

Creating good team environments and an open systems approach to giving and getting feedback. (PM)e.g. Admit mistakes, take responsibility, allocate resources, fix problems. (Teams)

• Review Market Study WBS diagram. Remove the Summary tasks

• Arrange the tasks into a Network diagram use the previous slide as a guide

or using Predecessors given • Complete the PERT boxes with all information

available ( see example next slide)• Calculate the critical path.

Add the P.E.R.T. elements onto the network diagram – place in the boxes.

Be able to draw a box as per book showing above.

Float/slack: Look at the PERT box and note difference between the ES and the LS times.

Critical path is defined by the overall times of PERT boxes in which there is no float.

• Add the Duration times in all the boxes on each path. Calculate the length of paths

• The longest path is the critical path

• The shorter paths have some items that do not have to be done on a strict schedule – they have float or slack.

• Calculate the slack for one item

Work in Groups for Final Group Project

• Choose a Project Manager in for each group• Discuss potential projects• Sign a Charter and hand in to Instructor

committing to work together – name project if decided – get approval so there is no duplication.

P.M. forms you have collected from Web etc.

What do you do with them?

Share them with your group and discuss.

Decide which sample of form you wan to include in your Final Group Project.

Modify the Charter or start completing it to start your project.

Assign one person the Responsibility of keeping a form inventory as more forms are located.

Home Assignments

• Finalize your project choice. Work with your Group to move your Project ahead during Week.

• Each Team Member creates a WBS and Network diagram for their part of the project. If you have not finalized your part of the project create and submit documents that indicate your ability to create these forms. Must use PowerPoint or equivalent software for the WBS and MS Project software for the Network Diagram.

• PM submits above forms for the Hi level overview (Definition) of the project.

• Complete the WBS Self Quiz - not on line, during the week. Review

in class next week.
