Dr. Isabel Garcia, Dean

College of Dentistry

University of Florida

Dr. Nick Place, Dean and Director

UF/IFAS Extension

University of Florida

Dear Drs. Garcia and Place,

I am excited to convey my interest and submit my application for the position of Dean, University of

Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. During two recent visits to Gainesville this past year, I was

impressed with the leadership and faculty at UFCVM and their bold visions for change. My ongoing

interactions with UF faculty in the emerging Southeastern Veterinary Education Consortium (SEVEC)

have only strengthened my initial impressions, as have longer conversations with several UF individuals

about their hopes for the next Dean. The traditions, facilities, partnerships and resources at the University

of Florida provide an environment almost too good to be true. I look forward to learning more about the

research, preclinical and clinical programs, hospital services, goals of the college and the potential fit with

my strengths and goals.

My path to this point has not been traditional, which provides me with an expansive vision for an

innovative and leading veterinary college. After entering academia through veterinary and specialty

training as an internist, my focus grew to include a passion for educational innovation and educational

leadership. Shortly after moving to the University of Tennessee (UT) as a medicine faculty member, I

forged a new, 50% appointment as Director of Educational Enhancement, building and leading that

program for nine years while I also returned to the classroom and earned a Doctor of Education degree in

Educational Policy and Leadership Studies, with a concentration in Higher Education Administration. My

studies and experiences led to a seven-year tenure in the UT state-wide system Office of Academic

Affairs and Student Success, serving as Assistant, then Associate, then Interim Vice President roles under

Vice President Katie High and President Joe DiPietro. The statewide UT system includes the flagship

Knoxville campus, the Health Science Center, two regional campuses and several Institutes, including the

Institute of Agriculture. During my time in the system administration, I gained vast experience in the

broader world of public higher education but maintained close ties to veterinary medical education,

continuing limited teaching, faculty development efforts, and scholarly efforts in both administrative and

veterinary pursuits. After multiple changes in UT leadership, I have been thrilled to return to the

veterinary college this past year to again work directly with veterinary students and colleagues. I am

eager to take this cumulative experience and help create the next vision for UFCVM. Although any

Page 54: 1 CURRICULUM VITA India Frances Lane, DVM, MS, EdD, Dipl. … · 2019-10-18 · 1 CURRICULUM VITA India Frances Lane, DVM, MS, EdD, Dipl. ACVIM (SAIM) Undergraduate: 1981-1984 University

2

vision must be created collaboratively, I hope the guiding principles include strong and visible

leadership, an emphasis on relationships, internal and external, and an organizational culture that

embraces continual change and growth.

My vision for veterinary education is for every student to succeed and to find his or her place in the

profession. Not only should their goals include biomedical knowledge and skills but personal and

professional growth. Achieving this vision requires an innovative, flexible curriculum and individualized

attention in a culture that promotes the socialization and development of the professional. A similar vision

exists for the college, for clinicians and researchers, who all need the personalized support,

encouragement and facilitation to succeed. Organizational and individual learning thrives when one can

grapple with abstract ideas, use opportunities to practice, reflect upon and build layers onto those ideas,

all in a motivating environment. I believe that a positive environment influences learning, productivity,

morale and retention of individuals in a college and in the profession. I envision all graduates and

professionals of UFCVM prepared, motivated and driven to do excellent work and to be a leader in

their community for both animal and human health.

My leadership philosophy, articulated further in the accompanying portfolio, is an extension of my

teaching philosophy and practice, where my role is to set the tone for a positive and effective team, then

“get out of the way.” My style is best described as genuine, quiet, analytical, and supportive. I enjoy

leading a team where my role is to listen, provide guidance, and facilitate the success of the team and the

institution. While the best way to ensure a project or program’s success is to ensure that at least one

person is focused on that project every day, the entire team must be invested in everyone’s success. My

strengths lie in connecting and facilitating groups, developing individual relationships, learning

together, and providing persistent but kind momentum to move projects forward.

In response to the specific qualifications for this position, I would like to briefly highlight some relevant

accomplishments that reflect my abilities:

• I was educated at a land-grant institution and have spent the last twenty-two years at the

University of Tennessee, a land-grant institution with an Institute of Agriculture serving the entirestate, similar to UF. I have been intensively engaged in executive level administration and

strategic planning within the UTCVM and in the university-wide system. In particular, I have

experience using Malcolm Baldrige and other frameworks for planning, assessment, accreditation

and program evaluation of education and healthcare organizations.

• I have participated and supported excellence in scholarship in both basic and applied forms,

publishing in diverse areas including veterinary urology, veterinary education and higher

education literature. My unique background includes experience in the inner world of scholarlypublishing, as I had the opportunity to oversee and study the University of Tennessee Press. I am

excited to work with the existing infrastructure at UF to promote, fund and support clinical and

translation research, strengthen existing research and identify resources and areas for impactfulgrowth.

• In my role as Director of Educational Enhancement at UTCVM, I led several innovative

educational programs that still thrive today, including problem-based learning (with clinical

skills development) and early clinical experience exercises, the educational enhancement program

and committee, and the UTCVM Master Teacher Program, a faculty development community ofpractice. I also facilitated a system-wide program supporting innovative online course pilots, and

redesigns, including MOOC formats, securing continuation funding from the state for several

Page 55: 1 CURRICULUM VITA India Frances Lane, DVM, MS, EdD, Dipl. … · 2019-10-18 · 1 CURRICULUM VITA India Frances Lane, DVM, MS, EdD, Dipl. ACVIM (SAIM) Undergraduate: 1981-1984 University

3

years beyond the initial pilots. One of these MOOC courses was developed within the veterinary college and demonstrated great potential for online opportunities in the profession.

• In two veterinary colleges, I have served as a clinical section leader and supported excellent

client services. At UTCVM I built and maintained a shock-wave lithotripsy program for small

animals that, to my knowledge, was the only on-site program in the world. In university-wideadministration, I co-led statewide initiatives including transfer, reverse transfer and adult

reengagement programs. Working across the state and with national and industry partners, we

built a recurring semi-automated reverse transfer program that serves all public and some privateinstitutions in the state. This initiative was co-funded by Lumina Foundation and state funds.

• A recent project, co-editing a Journal of Veterinary Medical Education theme issue, gave me a

glimpse into veterinary curricula around the world, while my work in the university-wide systemprovided big picture views of higher education and lessons from other disciplines. In that role, I

worked on a large number of new academic program proposals, providing deep dives into

curricular and educational approaches for undergraduate, graduate and professional programs

such as social work, occupational therapy, public health, strategic communications and datascientists.

• Since early in my career, initially becoming involved with the American College of Veterinary

Internal Medicine (ACVIM) and the UTK faculty senate, I have prioritized building and

sustaining relationships across departments, disciplines and institutions. This continually

growing network has been valuable for personal and professional needs. My experience in

university system-wide leadership included significant collaboration and communication withUT provosts, chancellors, treasurers and other university administrators, as well as system

presidents and vice-presidents across Tennessee, executive leaders at the Tennessee Higher

Education Commission, and legislative personnel.

• Other national and international collaborative activities have included roles in ACVIM,AAVMC, the Veterinary Educators Collaborative (VEC), and the International Association of

Medical Science Educators. Under my leadership, the UT Master Teacher Program hosted the

first faculty-led VEC symposium in 2010, and most recently has embarked on a partnership withveterinary educators in eastern Africa. As a member of an AAVMC task force, I helped

conceptualize and structure the new Council for International Veterinary Education (CIVME), a

group of global veterinary educational leaders fostering collaboration and collaborativeeducational research around the world.

• Clinical work and administrative work have honed my listening and communication skills. I

have worked effectively with individuals at multiple levels of university administration - from

registrars, librarians and administrative assistants to provosts, general counsel and senior systemleaders. I facilitated the revitalization of a university-wide faculty council and served as a liaison

for the four faculty senates in the system. Our office handled complaints and appeals from the

public, students, parents and faculty members, and interacted with external stakeholders

including industry partners, vendors, government agencies, private foundations and trustees. My

extensive writing and speaking experience spans diverse public, academic and scientific

audiences.

• Finally, I have long demonstrated a commitment to diversity and inclusion in education, in

veterinary curricula and veterinary admissions, degree completion programs, and academic

program development. As an example, the UTCVM Educational Enhancement program emerged

Page 56: 1 CURRICULUM VITA India Frances Lane, DVM, MS, EdD, Dipl. … · 2019-10-18 · 1 CURRICULUM VITA India Frances Lane, DVM, MS, EdD, Dipl. ACVIM (SAIM) Undergraduate: 1981-1984 University

4

and grew alongside the highly successful UT Veterinary Social Work program. Working with Dr.

Elizabeth Strand, we pushed communication skills development and cultural competence into any

exercise or tiny crack in the curriculum available. At the campus and state-wide level, the

University of Tennessee has been in the unusual position of defending its emphasis on diversity

and inclusion, despite the needs of a global workforce. The academic affairs office served to

provide data, review policies, benchmark policies and procedures against peer institutions, and

consolidate talking points in attempts to strengthen and maintain diverse student, faculty and staff

populations.

In summary, my philosophy, experiences and strengths are well suited for the role of Dean at this

fortuitous time. The transferable skills of veterinarians, including problem-solving, communication,

trouble-shooting and frankly, comfort with ambiguity and chaos, have served me well in my diverse

administrative experiences and beyond. I believe that my unique veterinary and higher education

knowledge, experience and skill set will enable me to lead a progressive veterinary college to the next

level of excellence and to facilitate creative and transformative solutions to the challenges of

contemporary veterinary medicine.

Academic veterinary medicine has taken me to more places, roles and experiences than I ever imagined.

The opportunity to serve the University of Florida in one of its premier programs is an exciting possibility

for another rewarding adventure.

Thank you in advance for the consideration of my application. An academic vita and administrative

portfolio are attached. Please let me know if you need any further information.

Sincerely,

India F. Lane

Preface

The purpose of this portfolio is to document my background, recent accomplishments and impact in

veterinary medical education and in academic administration. The portfolio also provides a window for

reflection on my skills, evolving roles and vision for the future.

My academic career has evolved from a traditional tenure track progression as a veterinary internist and

urologist to a veterinarian-educator who integrates an educational and scholarly approach to

administrative and other roles. Working for the only veterinarian to lead a public university system (Dr.

Joe DiPietro) and noticing the adaptions in my style, I can strongly endorse the transferable skills of the

veterinary professional. Dr. DiPietro and I both recognize the creative, analytical, problem-identification

and problem-solving mindset of veterinary training and how well it prepares one for future challenges.

For seven years, I served as Assistant, then Associate Vice President, then Interim Vice President in UT’s

system-wide Office of Academic Affairs and Student Success. My workload included general academic

affairs and intercampus activities, faculty senate and faculty council support, academic program support,

UT Press support, complete college initiatives and special projects. I held primary responsibility for the

University Faculty Council, UT Press, statewide transfer initiatives and a tenure policy review. Over most

of those years, 25-35% of my effort was certified to grants I secured and managed. I was also afforded the

privilege and flexibility to include some discretionary activities in my work; I continued a small teaching

assignment in the veterinary college and maintained select professional service obligations in veterinary

and health professions education. These connections continued to generate ideas and inspired my most

recent transition, resuming a full-time focus on health professions education starting this past summer. In

this portfolio I am pleased to relate my recent contributions to veterinary education, to multiple UT units,

and in the implementation of several long term projects (Tennessee Reverse Transfer and Tennessee

Reconnect).

Leadership Philosophy

As Kouzes and Posner (The Leadership Challenge) wrote, "…leadership begins with something that

grabs hold of you and won't let go." Throughout my career, I have been able to follow my heart and

follow my strengths, from veterinary science to internal medicine to veterinary education to educational

leadership. During this evolution, my leadership philosophy has developed as an extension of my

educational philosophy, where the success of those who look to me for leadership is the measure of my

success. As a teacher, I believe in a developmental model of teaching, where students learn key concepts

and are given the tools and enthusiasm to learn, apply what they've learned, and learn some more. I can

serve students best by offering structure and resources, and by facilitating their discovery of medicine

with examples and questions. The students’ mastery of the material and the medical thinking process

reflects my effectiveness. As a leader of colleagues or staff, I believe in shared possibility and shared

responsibility, where others are encouraged and empowered to try new things and to solve problems on

their own. Just as I do with students, I can provide concepts, resources and information. I can clarify

expectations, provide structure, serve as facilitator, and take the steps to enable a project without

controlling it. In the latter case, the success of the project is the benchmark for my success.

Page 60: 1 CURRICULUM VITA India Frances Lane, DVM, MS, EdD, Dipl. … · 2019-10-18 · 1 CURRICULUM VITA India Frances Lane, DVM, MS, EdD, Dipl. ACVIM (SAIM) Undergraduate: 1981-1984 University

My teaching moments are those during which I can facilitate small groups of learners who are excited

about the material or the patients at hand. In university-wide academic affairs, I am first and foremost a

facilitator. I’ve enjoyed shifting from driver to facilitator and watching the synergy and outcomes that

emerge when the right individuals are brought together to accomplish a goal or solve a problem. There is

no substitute for taking the time to listen and to try to understand the goal, asking, "What is best for the

institution? the students?” “How can we creatively and progressively accomplish these goals?” and “How

can I help you?” In both teaching and administrative scenarios, I believe our goals ultimately spring from

pride in the profession and institution, along with a sense of responsibility to make a difference, whether

it be in veterinary medicine or in higher education.

I believe lessons learned from veterinary medicine are well translated to leadership and institutional

service. First, my background in academic medicine provides a strong skill set in organization, multi-

tasking, interpersonal skills, and teamwork. Some other examples include the ability to communicate

with many different types of people, identify and approach problems logically and creatively, deal with

chaos and crisis, and remain comfortable in the face of uncertainty. I have found the ability to listen and

watch attentively and to readily admit, “I don’t know but I’ll find out” are assets that serve me well.

In all of my roles, I follow a positivistic approach to situations and people, believing that we should try to

see how we can make something work, rather than elaborate all the reasons why it can't. For empowering

relationships to succeed, I must believe the best in others, and others must believe in my sincerity and

credibility. Openness and accountability are keys to developing this kind of trust in academic

environments. With teaching and with leadership, a positive and trusting environment fosters new ideas

and promotes learning and growth. Unfortunately, a lack of trust impairs many faculty, student and staff

relationships with administrative leaders. As a leader, I can still follow the drumbeat of honesty and

transparency in my work with individuals, with groups and as a mentor to junior faculty and house

officers. I carry in my heart some of the last written words of one of my mentors:

Folks still respond to those same core leadership values of candor, civility, compassion and

courage that served in previous years. Colleagues look then and now for their leaders to stand

against arrogance, prejudice, duplicity and mediocrity. – Dr. Grady Bogue, 2013.

One of my favorite definitions of leadership comes from the concise and forthright writings of Max

DePree (Leadership is an Art): "The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality…The last is to say

thank you." These statements best capture my philosophy of true leadership. Leaders set the tone and

create the culture to allow great things to happen, never forgetting to honor the efforts of others along the

way.

Tennessee-wide Initiatives

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA):

I served as the UT leadership representative on a large state-wide team that worked to research,

benchmark and consolidate PLA policy and best practices for Tennessee (PLA Standards). The

standards document was adopted en bloc by the Tennessee Board of Regents as academic policy and

has guided policy changes at UT institutions. The project also compiled PLA requirements across

Tennessee campuses into an informational webpage; these requirements have now been incorporated

into the new Tennessee Reconnect portal as well.

Funding agreement:

Tennessee Higher Education Commission. Using transformative technology and developing tools

for students and campuses to ensure the efficient accumulation of credits to reduce time-to-

degree. Complete College America Completion Innovation Challenge, $1,000,000.

Reverse Transfer: Working with TBR and TICUA, we have led the development of a semi-automated

reverse transfer award system across the state. A reverse transfer award can be earned by a student who

earns credits at a community college, then transfers to a 4 year college prior to receiving the associate

degree. Somewhat unique to Tennessee, the reverse transfer awards process has been approached under a

statewide policy and a central simulated audit system. The software system manages identification and

contact of students, combination of credits earned at both institutions, and a preliminary degree audit.

With Gloria Gammell and a team of others, I have facilitated the project, including developing the policy,

securing funding, designing the solution and monitoring implementation. We have been able to work with

all Tennessee public institutions and with TICUA to provide consistent procedures across the state and to

provide continual enhancements for students and administrators. By 2017, the semi-automated system

had been employed for over three years and almost 3000 degrees have been awarded across Tennessee,

representing nearly a 10% increase in degrees awarded annually. New opt-in procedures are likely to

at least triple these numbers. The software solution designed for this project has won two PESC Best

Practice awards.

Tennessee Reconnect/Forward Transfer: Based on the progress and initial work regarding reverse

transfer, the UT Academic Affairs team was tapped to lead the Tennessee Reconnect adult portal

development. The portal includes an expanded, public facing simulated degree audit system and forward

transfer tool as well as other content for returning or enrolled students. This large undertaking includes

entry of all 22 public institutions’ informational profiles, courses and degree requirements. Grant funds

and salary savings have enabled us to hire two new staff members for our office. The portal and

expanded degree requirements were launched in early 2016. The site (www.tnreconnect.gov) had over

Tennessee Transfer Summit

In order to continue the success of statewide initiatives, ongoing engagement of admissions officers, advisors, registrars and other personnel is required. Based on feedback from academic leaders and administrative officials at institutions across the state, we recognized the need to provide accurate and timely updates regarding Tennessee Transfer Pathways, Tennessee Reverse Transfer and Tennessee Reconnect to all involved individuals. Using funding secured through THEC, UT led the inaugural state Transfer Summit in February 2017. Over 140 individuals from public and private colleges and

universities gathered to learn about the national transfer landscape, details of Tennessee programs, and outcomes to date. Feedback from participants was positive and we anticipate repeating the conference next year. Highlights from the evaluations include:

• 96% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the Summit helped maintain and enhance collaboration and communication about transfer student success.

• 98% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the Summit provided accurate and up to date information about the initiatives.

• Over 80% of respondents felt the Summit presentations and Breakout Sessions would be very or extremely useful in their work.

• Over 90% of respondents felt the networking opportunities were very or extremely useful.

University-wide Initiatives

The University of Tennessee Press: Early in my time in Academic Affairs, the UT Press underwent an

extensive review. I enjoyed being involved in the review committee, discussion groups and analysis. I led

the compilation for the written report and presentation to stakeholders, including the UT President. More

recently I have enjoyed an increasing role on the editorial board. The UT Press received enthusiastic

support after the review and adopted many of the report’s recommendations. A follow-up report,

including significant emphasis on UT Press’ role in the university’s mission, was completed in 2016

and has led to a new strategic planning effort. UT Press books continue to receive recognition for

quality and impact.

Advising Summit: Following the Board of Trustees’ growing interest and a UT audit on advising quality,

we organized a university-wide summit in 2013. The summit brought together teams from each

to plan for improvement. The summit experience and outcomes were well-received by campus teams

and trustees.

Online Innovation: THEC began exploring the opportunities afforded by massive open online courses in

2013. I worked with THEC and TBR to develop agreements for the first $500,000 pilot projects as well

as the institutional contracts with Coursera, edX and course instructors. During this period we evaluated 6

pilot courses in online or flipped/hybrid format. The success of the effort, especially the flipped/blended

courses, led to additional funding for course redesign in 2014-2015 and ensuing years. Current funding

is focused on online business and kinesiology course options for our flagship institution and Quality

Matters training and review at UTC and UTHSC. The relationships with Coursera and edX gave us an

opening into additional opportunities, including global outreach courses. I was invited to serve on the

advisory panel for the Coursera Annual Partners Meeting in London in 2015 and participated in that

program. We negotiated a membership with edX in 2015 and have launched two open courses. These

responsibility as a liaison for faculty groups across UT. By serving as an active liaison and facilitator, I

have helped the UT Faculty Council remain an integral communication channel for UT faculty leaders

help move the group toward a more organized structure, meeting schedule and constructive philosophical

orientation. The Council now serves as a key arm of shared governance and is often consulted regarding

significant events or decisions.

Maintaining and updating faculty handbooks is also an ongoing challenge, especially when there is a

complex series of review and approval steps. A Faculty Handbook retreat in 2011 was a useful starting

point for all UT Senates. I subsequently worked with IT staff to develop and refine a Sharepoint based

workflow for review and recommendation for UTK Handbook revisions.

Key Educational Accomplishments

Teaching and Learning Philosophy

During my teaching career, I have had the unique opportunity to teach (and learn from) a variety of

groups: preclinical veterinary students, fourth-year clinical veterinary students, freshly graduated interns,

exceptionally talented residents, experienced veterinary practitioners and veterinary colleagues. More

recently, I find myself learning to adapt teaching skills to educate new peer colleagues, campus leaders,

trustees, policy-makers and other stakeholders. Although these diverse audiences have differing needs,

my overall approach to teaching relies on a few key principles.

Philosophy and Methods

First, I try to create a conceptual or mechanistic approach to all topics. This approach arises from

my long training in internal medicine, where a mechanistic approach is key to creating diagnostic

algorithms, developing appropriate treatment strategies, and solving novel or unique problems. Although

a large number of “facts” can be memorized and recited by good and not-so-good students, real learning

occurs when the mechanisms underlying pathology (or the theory underlying practice) are understood. In

the clinic, my job as a teacher is to uncover the thinking underneath the discipline of internal medicine,

logical methods that look like pure art and intuition to the novice. In the classroom, my job is both to

build the students’ understanding of complex concepts, and to place them in an organized framework,

ultimately creating a new body of knowledge. In the conference room or board meeting, my role is to

highlight the problem or problems at hand and simplify complex options or solutions.

While deep, conceptual material presented within an organized framework enhances learning for most

students, reinforcement and repetition in applied contexts makes it stick and makes it useful. Becoming a

student and novice again in a completely “foreign” discipline has been the most illuminating experience

for me in my career as a teacher. Along with learning more about educational theory (and learning good

and bad strategies from my instructors!), the experience has made me acutely aware of veterinary

students’ struggles to grasp the huge volume of material that comprises veterinary school. In my teaching,

I not only try to reinforce material within my course multiple times and in multiple contexts, I try to point

out interrelationships with other courses, other disciplines, and human medicine as much as possible.

The use of clinical case material is another natural component of medical teaching, and reinforces

both content knowledge and problem-solving in an applied context. Recently I have tried to bring more

and more short case examples into my teaching, rather than relying on in-depth case discussions alone to

present this angle of medicine. For preclinical students, I am still experimenting with case discussion

methods, moving from large group, instructor-led sessions to small group analysis of cases or

independent online case material and self-assessments. Our students now are so bright, so technologically

savvy, and living in such a fast-paced world that my slow motion, step-by-step case discussions have

become less effective in a large group. My current strategy to reach through the blur of content overload

uses as many hands-on opportunities as possible. I have developed a simulated urinary feline urinary

obstruction laboratory and a set of models for bladder palpation, common micturition disorders and

prostatic disorders. I look forward to continuing to refine and validate these models for scholarly

dissemination.

Values

With time and experience, my teaching philosophy and style has solidified around a few core values

about education. These values include a commitment to excellence, a positive and optimistic approach to

teaching, and great respect for students of all types and stages.

I expect the best of students and assume that I will get their best, until proven otherwise. In return,

students should expect my best effort every day and I try hard to meet that expectation. In the clinic, I

encourage a professional team approach, where all input and questions are valued. Students and house

officers deserve positive reinforcement and honest feedback about their progress. My fascination with

medicine and my enthusiasm for teaching brought me to this point, and I want to show every student the

contagious blend of intellectual curiosity, engagement of ideas, and joy of discovery that makes me love

my work. I believe learning takes place best in a relaxed environment that fosters discussion,

brainstorming and reflection. The enhancement of learning occurs when students feel safe to “think out

loud” and practice medical assessment with my guidance. With other stakeholders, I also assume we are

all on the same team, working to improve the institution or the value for students. To create such an

environment takes great patience, respect and trust; to erode such an environment takes only one

inappropriate word, one careless action.

Finally, I believe in second chances and I believe that all students can succeed, given the right tools,

motivation and individual attention. I also believe that all faculty members can become great teachers,

with similar givens. My career now includes the great privilege to lead educational efforts in our college

and in other arenas. I look forward to bringing these values with me in order to meet my goals and to meet

the goals of veterinary education.

DirectorofEducationalEnhancement(2002-2011)During a college reorganization process undertaken in 2001, I wrote a proposal for the re-creation of a

college educational office. In a college that prioritized the teaching mission, educational programming

and support needs had expanded beyond what the existing administrative structure could adequately

provide. In the final organizational structure, the Office of Educational Enhancement was created to lead

a global and futuristic view of curricular and student needs, foster a positive learning environment, and

improve teaching in the college. As Director, I reported to the Dean and worked to initiate several student

activities, rebuild the curriculum committee, promote the faculty-student mentoring program, and initiate

regular faculty discussions related to teaching and learning. At the time, the Director served on the college

Executive Committee, Performance Enhancement Team and Strategic Planning Team. An Educational

Enhancement Committee now maintains responsibility for a few academic and co-curricular programs

under the oversight of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

UTCVM Master Teacher Program

Traditionally, the UT College of Veterinary Medicine has placed a significant emphasis on teaching

excellence. Strategic planning efforts have included lofty goals in strengthening teaching programs, from

the DVM program to clinical education, graduate student teaching development and continuing education.

In order to help meet these goals, Dr. Mickey Sims and I planned and proposed a more structured Master

Teacher Program which was funded and initiated in 2008. Over 30% of UTCVM faculty initially

committed to participation as core members, whereas many more individuals have attended programming.

The program has been highlighted as a strength of the college in the Dean’s annual college report and in

recruitment of new faculty members, and has been highlighted in a University of Tennessee Institute of

Agriculture publications Life, Land, Science (Fall, 2009) and Veterinary Vision (2015). Most recently the

program’s leadership team received the Gamma Sigma Delta Team Award (2015) and reached a

milestone tenth anniversary (2018).

Components of the Program include:

• Open monthly meetings to discuss issues and policies related to teaching, review informationfrom teaching conferences, share innovations and discuss various teaching and learning topics(average attendance per meeting = 24 - 28)

• Guest speakers for innovative or key topics

• Annual Fundamentals of Teaching Workshops and periodic Clinical Teaching Workshops

• Collaboration with other veterinary colleges, the Southeastern Veterinary Education Consortiumand the Veterinary Educators Collaborative

• Travel support for veterinary education conferences

Additional Relevant Research, Creative Achievement and Scholarship

Just as excellent teachers of science and medicine are active investigators in the discipline, an active

educator and administrator benefits from active scholarship in that arena. Educational scholarship may be

more broadly defined than hypothesis-driven bench or clinical research, but is equally rigorous and

valuable to the profession, especially academic veterinary medicine, where a dearth of evidence is

available regarding the effectiveness of training veterinary students. In addition to prospective

investigations in discovery, these scholarly pursuits are more likely to include the scholarships of

integration and application of knowledge, and sharing of best practices and experiences. However, the

research approach is similar, including grounding in available literature/evidence, elaboration of specific

goals or hypotheses, use of appropriate research methods, accurate description of results, outcomes or

impact, and dissemination in a public venue.

As a teacher, administrator, and student of educational leadership and policy, I became intrigued with the

holistic development of veterinary students in problem-solving and other nontechnical competencies

(ethics, self-development, creativity and flexibility, interpersonal skills, business/management skills, and

leadership). I was also intrigued by the many disparate views of veterinary faculty members regarding

effective student development and new educational methods. My educational scholarship thus has

focused on the professionalization of veterinarians, and includes investigation of faculty attitudes

regarding development of nontechnical skills and professionalism, student perspectives on veterinary

professionalism, student perspectives of team environments, communication and learning in the clinical

setting, and the overarching theme of educational change.

Key findings from my research include differences in faculty perspectives based on gender, career stage,

discipline and institution; differences in faculty and students perspectives regarding the meaning of

Page 70: 1 CURRICULUM VITA India Frances Lane, DVM, MS, EdD, Dipl. … · 2019-10-18 · 1 CURRICULUM VITA India Frances Lane, DVM, MS, EdD, Dipl. ACVIM (SAIM) Undergraduate: 1981-1984 University

14

professionalism, and a reliance on superficial or concrete learning early in students’ clinical

experiences. Awareness of these findings is expected to aid educational leaders and administrators in

communicating with faculty members and in planning curricular modifications to meet student needs. The

research will also as aid faculty members in understanding the needs of the profession, needs of student

learners, and the students’ viewpoint as a novice professional. The work has been disseminated by

presentation at an international meeting of medical educators, publication as part of a point-counterpoint

forum in Advances in Health Science Education: Theory and Practice, published in the Journal of the

American Veterinary Medical Association, and linked as a resource for the NAVMEC explorations into

the future of veterinary medical education.

The quality of this research has been recognized by an institutional award from the UT College of

Education, Health and Human Sciences and internationally, where a poster presentation based on a

portion of the research was adjudicated as one of the top 3 award finalists (among over 100 submissions)

at the International Association of Medical Science Educators annual meeting in Leiden, The Netherlands

(2009). I have also presented portions of this work at an earlier IAMSE meeting in Puerto Rico, at two

International Conferences on Communication in Veterinary Medicine (held in Washington, DC and

Banff, Canada), and at the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. My expertise in

nontechnical competencies has been recognized internationally by my inclusion as an external reviewer

for a thesis on a similar topic at the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada and in an invited

presentation at the Association of American Veterinary Colleges (AAVMC) annual meeting. I have also

been invited to do workshops at veterinary colleges in the US and Canada and recently authored the

“Professionalism” chapter in Hodgson and Pelzer’s Veterinary Medical Education (2017).

A related area of inquiry explores the organizational change and curricular renewal required to meet the

evolving needs of students and the profession. At this point, the topic has been an area for observational

study and review, rather than hypothesis-driven investigation, but I recently led and published results

from a survey of curricular highlights, curricular management and renewal strategies at AAVMC member

schools. The paper provided the lead to the Fall 2017 theme issue of the Journal of Veterinary Medical

Education, for which I served as co-guest editor, and the first ever compilation of curricular structures at

all AVMA accredited colleges of veterinary medicine. This extensive and labor-intensive project not only

advances my interest in studying curricular development but should foster curricular renewal and related

research at veterinary colleges around the world.

More recently my educational scholarship has been recognized by an invitation to give the first

educational research keynote speech for the University of Calgary’s graduate student research day in 2014

and by a 2016 national award from Omega Tau Sigma, a veterinary professional society. I have continued

to foster a scholarly approach to administrative work and actively mentor staff members’ efforts in

studying and disseminating our work.

world. My engagement in veterinary medical educational initiatives has also helped create a credible and

recognizable structure for faculty contribution and reward in veterinary education.

educational programs and meet specific professional goals, including:

intellectually curious and service-minded professionals

• Expand the Master Teacher Program concept to develop regional consortia.

• Author books on classroom and clinical teaching in veterinary medicine, including supplemental

materials that can be used for on campus development

• Author creative non-fiction that captures the modern history of academic veterinary medicine
