The general aim of this project is to carry out a systematic investigation into a series of contemporary debates on the notion and uses of 'Epistemic Justification'. Firstly, we will provide theoretical reconstructions and critical evaluations of the contributions to the problem of epistemic justification made by three current lines of research, namely 'Hinge Epistemology', the 'neo-pragmatic' critique of the foundationalist model, and the Epistemology of testimony. Secondly, we will offer a systematic study of the nature and practices of epistemic justification in the fields of formal sciences (especially mathematics) and empirical sciences. In particular, we will provide new and original conceptual clarifications of the notions of formal proof and mathematical rigor, as models of mathematical justification, as well as of the notion of empirical evidence (in its logical, epistemic and metaphysical dimensions), in the field of empirical sciences.
