Introduction

• A teacher in the classroom must realize that he or she will encounter many different students with many different abilities.

• “How do I reach all students in my classroom is a question all good teachers should ask themselves”.

• Differentiated instruction is defined as “a process to approach teaching and learning for students of different abilities in the classroom.”

• Many times when teachers think of differentiated instruction they usually think of students with lower abilities however one must remember that gifted students often fail because their needs are not being met

• Modifying content.– Content consists of ideas, concepts, descriptive

information, and facts.– Content, as well as learning experiences, can be

modified through acceleration, compacting, variety, reorganization, flexible pacing, and the use of more advanced or complex concepts, abstractions, and materials.

– Gifted students benefit greatly from curriculum experiences that cross or go beyond traditional content areas, particularly when they are encouraged to acquire an integrated understanding of knowledge and the structure of the disciplines.

• Modifying process – To modify process, activities must be

restructured to be more intellectually demanding

– Activity selection should be based on student interests, and activities should be used in ways that encourage self-directed learning

• Modifying environment – Students who are gifted it is essential that the

teacher establishes a climate that encourages them to question, exercise independence, and use their creativity in order to be all that they can be.

Social studies teacher Leon Bushe.– Divides his class of thirty into groups of 10.

– Each student in the group is responsible to participate by taking a role in the court, (lawyer, witness etc..).

– This type of activity can insure students are participating and the teacher can make sure all students are getting the information they need regardless of academic level.
