KnowledgeProverbs 1:1-7
2
2 Peter 1:5-11
“ 5 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral
excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, 6 and in your knowledge, self-
control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance,
godliness, 7 and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly
kindness, love. …”
3
2 Peter 1:5-11
“… 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the
true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these
qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from
his former sins.…”
4
2 Peter 1:5-11
“… 10 Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; 11 for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.”

Proverbs 1:1-7
“The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: 2 To know
wisdom and instruction, To discern the sayings of understanding, 3 To receive
instruction in wise behavior, Righteousness, justice and equity; 4 To
give prudence to the naive, To the youth knowledge and discretion, …”
7
Proverbs 1:1-7
“… 5 A wise man will hear and increase in learning, And a man of
understanding will acquire wise counsel, 6 To understand a proverb and
a figure, The words of the wise and their riddles. 7 The fear of the Lord is
the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
8
Knowledge
•Another building block we must add to our foundation as a Christian –2 Pet. 1:5 "Now for this very
reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge,"
9
Knowledge
•Another building block we must add to our foundation as a Christian –The knowledge under consideration is that of God's word.–We must continually add knowledge.•We must "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." 2 Pet. 3:18
10
Knowledge
•If we stop growing in knowledge and understanding we are displeasing to God–Heb. 5:12-14
11
Hebrews 5:12-14
"For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not
solid food. …"
12
Hebrews 5:12-14
"… 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of
righteousness, for he is an infant. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses
trained to discern good and evil."
13
Knowledge
•If we stop growing in knowledge and understanding we are displeasing to God–Israel perished for lack of knowledge - Hos. 4:6
14
Hosea 4:6
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from
being My priest. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also
will forget your children."
15
Knowledge
•If we stop growing in knowledge and understanding we are displeasing to God–Israel perished for lack of knowledge - Hos. 4:6–This has happened to God's people many times.–It could well be happening today.
16
Knowledge - Epignosis
•In 2 Pet. 1:2,3,8 – Peter uses the word "epignosis" in the phrase "the knowledge of Jesus Christ"–The word epignosis means "to become thoroughly acquainted with, to know thoroughly, to know accurately, know well" (Thayer)
17
Knowledge - Epignosis
•In 2 Pet. 1:2,3,8 – Peter uses the word "epignosis" in the phrase "the knowledge of Jesus Christ"
•Such knowledge comes only as we demonstrate all eight of the "Christ-like graces" in our lives
18
Knowledge - Epignosis
•Knowledge (gnosis) is just one element...–Peter uses the word "gnosis" when he tells us to add knowledge to virtue - 2 Pet. 1:5
19
Knowledge - Epignosis
•Knowledge (gnosis) is just one element...–The word gnosis means "a seeking to know, an inquiry, investigation" (Vine)–This word conveys the normal idea of knowledge: "awareness through study and experience" (Wycliffe)
20
Knowledge - Epignosis
•Knowledge (gnosis) is just one element...
•-This knowledge pertains to understanding the will of God and the way of salvation through Jesus Christ - cf. Lk 1:77; Phil. 3:8
21
Luke 1:77
“To give to His people the knowledge of salvation by
the forgiveness of their sins,”
22
Philippians 3:8
“More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all
things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,”
23
So we add to our faith and moral excellence that
knowledge (gnosis) or information
necessary to truly know (epignosis)
Jesus Christ
24

The Danger of Knowledge
•Knowledge can make one Arrogant–Knowledge has the potential to produce arrogance - cf. 1 Cor. 8:1-2
65
1 Corinthians 8:1-2
“Now concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have
knowledge. Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies. 2 If
anyone supposes that he knows anything, he has not yet known as
he ought to know;”
66
The Danger of Knowledge
•Knowledge can make one Arrogant–Knowledge has the potential to produce arrogance - cf. 1 Cor. 8:1-2•It can "puff up" rather than "build up"•"A little learning is a dangerous thing." - Pope
67
The Danger of Knowledge
•Knowledge can make one Arrogant–For this reason we must temper knowledge with love and meekness•Love edifies, and does not puff itself up - cf. 1 Cor. 8:1; 13:4
68
1 Corinthians 8:1
“Now concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have
knowledge. Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies.”
69
1 Corinthians 13:4
“Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous;
love does not brag and is not arrogant,”
70

•Knowledge can make one Arrogant–For this reason we must temper knowledge with love and meekness•Love edifies, and does not puff itself up - cf. 1 Cor. 8:1; 13:4•What knowledge or wisdom we believe we have, should manifest itself in a spirit of meekness - cf. James 3:13,17
71
James 3:13,17
•“Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.”
•17 “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.”
72
The Danger of Knowledge
•Knowledge can make one Arrogant
•There is no virtue in Knowledge if it leads to arrogance!
73
The Danger of Knowledge
•Knowledge can Destroy a Brother–Knowledge can be destructive when misused - cf. 1 Cor. 8:4-11
74
1 Corinthians 8:4-11“Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that there is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one. 5 For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, 6 yet for us there is but one
God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus
Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him. …”
75
1 Corinthians 8:4-11“… 7 However not all men have this
knowledge; but some, being accustomed to the idol until now, eat food as if it were
sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled. 8 But food will not commend us to God; we are neither the
worse if we do not eat, nor the better if we do eat. 9 But take care that this liberty of
yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. …”
76
1 Corinthians 8:4-11
“… 10 For if someone sees you, who have knowledge, dining in an idol's
temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be strengthened to eat things sacrificed to idols? 11 For through your knowledge he who is weak is ruined, the brother for whose sake
Christ died.”
77
The Danger of Knowledge
•Knowledge can Destroy a Brother–Knowledge can be destructive when misused - cf. 1 Cor. 8:4-11•When we despise the lack of knowledge in others•When we run roughshod over the weak conscience of others
78
The Danger of Knowledge
•Knowledge can Destroy a Brother–Such abuse of knowledge produces sin in our lives - cf. 1 Cor. 8:12-13
79
1 Corinthians 8:12-13
“And so, by sinning against the brethren and wounding their
conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will
never eat meat again, so that I will not cause my brother to stumble.”
80
The Danger of Knowledge
•Knowledge can Destroy a Brother–Such abuse of knowledge produces sin in our lives - cf. 1 Cor. 8:12-13•We can actually sin against Christ!•Therefore love must properly restrain our use of knowledge - e.g., Rom. 14:14-21
81
Romans 14:14-21
“I know and am convinced in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but to him who thinks anything to be
unclean, to him it is unclean. 15 For if because of food your brother is hurt,
you are no longer walking according to love. Do not destroy with your food him
for whom Christ died. …”
82
Romans 14:14-21
“… 16 Therefore do not let what is for you a good thing be spoken of as evil; 17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and
peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For he who in this way serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by
men. …”
83
Romans 14:14-21
“… 19 So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another. 20 Do not tear down the work of
God for the sake of food. All things indeed are clean, but they are evil for the man who eats and gives offense. 21 It is good not to
eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles.”
84
The Danger of Knowledge
•Knowledge can Destroy a Brother
•Like a sharp knife, knowledge can be dangerous used improperly!
