1 Peter: Godly Relationships

Week 2: Holy living

• Rid yourself of sin

• Live with reverent fear

• Crave spiritual milk

• Seek peace

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

We are called to be holy:

1Pe 1:15-16 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

We are called to godly relationships.

1Pe 1:22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

Starting point:

• First purify yourself– By obeying the truth!– Sincere love for your brothers

• Love deeply– From the heart– Not just because we are supposed to!

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

1Pe 2:1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

Rid yourself of all malice

• κακιαν - evil, malice (-iousness), naughtiness, wickedness.

• No wishing evil on your brother!

• Forgiveness!

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

Rid yourself of all deceit

• δολον - a trick (bait), that is, (figuratively) wile: - craft, deceit, guile, subtilty.

• No trying to look better than you really are!

• The truth, even when it hurts!

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

Rid yourself of all hypocrisy:

• υποκρισεις - feigning to be what we are not; assuming a false appearance

• No holding others to a standard you do not meet yourself!

• Jesus reserved his sternest rebukes for hypocrites

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

Rid yourself of all envy

• φθονους - Hatred of others on account of something which they have which we do not.

• No prejudice against those richer than yourself

• Content with what you have!

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

Rid yourself of all slander

• καταλαλιας - backbiting, evil speaking; unkind speaking against others

• Jam 4:11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. [ESV]

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

1Pe 2:9-10 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

You [ plural ] are a chosen people...

• Chosen: precious to God

• Holy!

• Should declare praises of God– Not your criticisms of your brother!

• Jam 3:10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

• 1Pe 2:13-7 Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

Submit to authorities

• Pay your taxes!

• Obey the law!

• Respect the police!

• If you don't respect authority...– How do you expect your children to do so?

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

1Pe 2:17 Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.

• Respect your brothers and sisters– Don't speak evil of them!– Don't speak harshly to them!– The Holy Spirit lives in them!

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

Respecting one another

• "Every man is in some way my superior." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

• Do you view others that way?

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

1Pe 2:23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

Grace under pressure!

• Did not retaliate

• Made no threats

• Entrusted self to God

Rom 12:19 Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

1Pe 3:1-2 Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

Wives be submissive

• Give him respect

• Give him room to lead spiritually

• Unpopular in today's culture– But have faith in God– Results will speak for themselves

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

1Pe 3:7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

Husbands, be considerate, respectful of wives

• Gentleness, kindness

• Heirs together– One flesh! – Partners 'till death do us part!

• So prayers will not be hindered– God is her defender!

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

1Pe 3:8-9 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.

• Sums it all up.

• A great passage to memorize!

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

1Pe 4:8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

Pro 10:12 Hatred stirs up dissension,

but love covers over all wrongs.

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

1Pe 4:9-10 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.

• How have you served your brothers and sisters this past week?

• How will you serve this coming week?

• Find a way to serve!

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

1Pe 5:1-4 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers--not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

Caring for the flock:

• Because you are willing

• Eager to serve

• Set an example

Specifically, talking to elders.

God wants the same kind of service from all of us!

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

1Pe 5:5-6 Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,

"God opposes the proud

but gives grace to the humble."

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

Young men

• Submissive – natural tendency is not to be!

All of you

• Humility

• God will lift you up!

1 Peter: Godly Relationships

1Pe 5:14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

• Show your love for one another

• In a culturally appropriate way
