EARTH DAY: Wednesday April 22nd, 2009. Earth Day was first launched in 1970 in America. Today it is celebrated all over the Earth. Try to participate in a local initiative that will be felt globally. A community clean-up, or tree planting event, or even simply writing an email or letter to local politicians encouraging positive environmental action. ECOSCHOOLS REMINDER: April 20th Deadline. All schools should be starting to gather all of the paperwork required to submit a completed certification binder to the TCDSB EcoTeam, by April 20th. The EcoTeam will review the submissions, before sending all of them to Ontario EcoSchools for certification. Don’t forget, if you need assistance do not hesitate to contact one of the TCDSB ecoteam members. APRIL 30TH IS THE FINAL DUE DATE FOR SUBMITTING YOU CERTIFICATION BINDER. SPRING 2009: CITY CLEAN-UP All schools are encouraged to participate in the City of Toronto 20-minute makeover event on Friday April 24, 2009 at 2p.m. Be sure to include a collection bag for recyclables, and a collection bag for waste. Bags and gloves are very limited this year in an effort to reduce waste, and may not be available for all. The Sign-up date has been extended to April 3, 2009. Please use the following link: http://intranet/vgk/20minutemakeover.registration.asp Ministry of Education – Environmental Curriculum Update: “Schools have a vital role to play in preparing our young people to take their place as informed, engaged, and empowered citizens who will be pivotal in shaping the future of our communities, our province, our country and our global environment." A quote from the Ministry of Education which has now presented an environmental policy framework for environmental education, whereby all students

will learn about the environment, for the environment and in the environment. Ontario EcoSchools was instrumental in helping to shape this initiative. Is your school striving for EcoSchool certification? If not, then the “Earth Month” of April is an excellent time to start the ball rolling. To learn how to become an Ontario Certified EcoSchool contact a TCDSB EcoTeam member. Earth Hour 2009: Thank you to all those that participated! EARTH MONTH COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP EVENTS (Revised)

During Earth Month (April), there are two community environmental events that TCDSB school participation is encouraged. • The City of Toronto’s 20-Minute Makeover on Friday April 24th (All grades) • The City Park Clean-up, April 14th to May 1st 2009.

20 Minute Makeover (All grades) TCDSB has displayed a phenomenal participation rate and demonstrated our Board’s commitment to our community and the environment. In response to Mayor David Miller’s formal invitation, the Board encourages all schools and administrative sites to participate in the 20-Minute Makeover. If your school would like to participate, please go to the following link to enrol; http://intranet/vgk/20minutemakeover.registration.asp. We will only provide two bags per school and one box of latex gloves for the first 100 schools that register before March 27, 2009. The City provides the bags for special pick up at the curb. We are to bring the bags back to our school and place them in the appropriate containers. This is to reduce the carbon footprint of trucks being used to college this garbage. Schools will need to provide additional garbage bags and latex gloves. It is suggested that students be divided into teams of recycling material and garbage material. During the 20 minutes, students and teachers are asked to clean up litter in any public space – school grounds, streets, parks etc. Again the school must register by Friday March 27, 2009. Participants should bring small plastic grocery bags from home for litter collection. Now plastic grocery bags are recyclable. Place all empty plastic bags inside one bag. – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. City Park Clean-up (Grades 1-6) If you would like to participate in the city clean up at a local park between April 14th and May 1st, please complete the Request Form and return it to Charlotte Ueta of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation via e-mail to [email protected] or fax to 416-392-0044 by Thursday March 26th. Charlotte will put you in touch with your local Park Supervisor to make arrangements. Please indicate the name of the Park you wish to clean, the number of student and teachers attending and your preferred clean-up date and time. Individual classes will be accommodated on a first come, first serve basis. The number of classes accommodated will be up to the discretion of each Park Supervisor. For Park clean-up, Parks and /or Recreation staff will be on-site to provide a pre-clean-up presentation and to review safety rules. They will also remove bags of lifter and recycling cleaned from parks and will keep sharps containers on hand. In addition, Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation are having a draw to plant a tree. There are four (4) trees available. Schools interested in the planting must register for the clean-up by March 25th. Up to four schools will be chosen, one per City district, in a random draw for the tree panting. Note that only schools that are cleaning a local park are eligible to participate in the tree planting. For both events the following should be included:

• Prayer services to be used during Earth Week • Schools must bring a first aid kit with them to their clean up area, and students should be accompanied by a staff

person trained in first aid • Students participating in the 20 Minute Makeover should fill out a Media Release form, as the event could be covered

by local media Participation in events such as these allows students to live the Catholic Graduate Expectation: A Responsible Citizen, as they do their part to help create a clean and Beautiful Toronto. This leadership project may be championed by a student leadership team (i.e. ESP, Smile) an environmental club, the chaplaincy team, a science or social science class or staff and students who are passionate about environmental issues (i.e. ECO team). We would ask that all schools include their custodial staff as major partners in their initiative.

For information, please contact Paul Deighan at 416-222-8282 ext. 2177 or [email protected].

Outline of “Cybersafety in the Home” Presentation

By Bruce Johnson Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.

Loretto Abbey C.S.S. Auditorium (3rd floor)

My name is Bruce Johnson. For over 20 years, I have dedicated my career with The York Centre to supporting children, youth and families with their struggle to manage mental health difficulties. Currently I develop and facilitate violence reduction programming. These programs include Anti-bullying, Anger Management, and Cyber-safety. ‘Our’ new world includes; spam, IM, MSN, chat, surfing, facebook, lol, pos, phishing, ASL, pop-ups and file sharing. This is the language of cyberspace. This is not a new frontier for our teens; they have been online most of their lives. They are not intimidated by the technology. Like all tools, the Internet has the potential to harm. This Workshop’s focus will be to help parents understand how to help our children to be ‘cybersmart’. Workshop participants will leave with tools and strategies which will help guide their teens through the many challenges that the Internet poses to the safety and piece of mind of our teens. Workshop participants will:

• Discuss some risky situations that their teen may experience on-line. • Discuss the need for clear guidelines for Internet use. • Learn how to gather information from your computer, which will help authorities take action if

needed. • Discuss the value have having an Internet Contract. • Discuss how to help your teen re cyber-bullying.

The format of the evening will be structured, but informal. The evening will include a presentation and discussion. An information package, which will include tips and strategies, will be available for all participants. Time: 2 hours Intended Audience: Parents, teachers, support workers, teacher assistants. Materials needed: LCD projector, Computer and speakers. Photocopying and paper.

SNAP BEACHES EDITION APRIL 2009 ONE COMMUNITY AT CARDINAL NEWMAN With help from the Student Voice Program, students at Cardinal Newman Catholic School embraced “One Community” a two-day multicultural celebration encouraging learning and engagement in the school’s community. An initiative funded by the Ministry of Education, supported the school’s two-day multicultural festival, which saw the entire school unite and each student proudly represent their heritages. The first-day featured a full day of dancing and performances featuring the many cultures that enrich the school’s community, while the second-day’s focus transitioned to a look at culinary favourites. An event, which rallied the entire school, showcased a strong bond amongst students and staff. “One Community” demonstrated the understanding, appreciation and pride that exist within each culture, allowing everyone to let loose and enjoy each other’s company in what was a monumental two-day celebration. “Loretto College” “Give Peace a Dance 2009”&“Compassion is Always in Fashion show”

On Thursday March 12, 2009, once again an enthusiastic crowd packed our schools atrium for a night of music, dance and a mini fashion show to promote the fight against school violence in and around our school communities. Our Give Peace a Dance campaign was a collaboration for peace and the participating schools were ArchBishop Romero, Madonna, Don Bosco, St. Basil, St. Patricks, Dante Alighieri, Marshall McLuhan and Father Henry Carr who opened up the event with an amazing drum line routine. Our special guests and finale for this year was “Cookie Couture” a dynamic Canadian all female Hip Hop group and they were a hit! Our Empowered student partnership committee decided to incorporate a mini fashion show along with the help of Mr. Matak’s grade 11 art class. The grade 11 students and a few ESP students designed t-shirts with anti-violence and peace logo’s. The fashion show generated a great response especially when our two officers Tony Santeramo and Raul Cutuli walked the red carpet modelling matching t-shirts. Give Peace a Dance caught media attention as it appeared on the 6:00 news on City TV and has a featured article in the York Guardian. Our goal was to try and reach as many teens as possible with a Safe School message of taking a stand and keeping our schools safe. Submitted by: Ms. P. Onilla

community and their loved ones, particularly the following who have died recently... for these we pray:

May the angels lead them into paradise. May the martyrs come to welcome them into the

new and eternal Jerusalem. The holy sacrifice of the Mass will

be offered for their souls. May they rest in peace.

WORKPLACE FATALITIES

NATIONAL DAY OF

MOURNING

TUESDAY, APRIL 28, 2009

Each year, workplace accidents and occupational disease are responsible for a large number of workplace fatalities among Canadian workers. On average, 3 Canadians die each workday due to workplace accidents. According to statistics from the Association of Workers’ Compensation Board’s of Canada, 1055 workplace fatalities were recorded in Canada in 2007. Thousands suffer disabling injuries, many of them permanent causing enormous pain and suffering for employees and their families. Since 1998, there have been 6 workplace fatalities to education workers in Ontario school boards. In recognition of these ongoing losses and injuries, the Canadian Labour Congress and the Federal Government have declared Tuesday, April 28, 2009 as “National Day of Mourning”. To commemorate this day, workers throughout Canada are encouraged to observe a moment of silence to remember those workers who died from workplace accidents or occupationally related diseases. All teachers are encouraged to incorporate safety in their daily classroom activities. The live safe work smart program provides Ontario teachers with resource materials that can be easily incorporated in everyday lesson plans.

http://www.livesafeworksmart.net/ Secondary School Principals and teachers are encouraged to remind all students who are working part-time or are looking for a summer job to work safely and to ask questions in the workplace if they are unsure about a job task.
