• Three investigations:

- hardware and software reviews

- critical code areas (Microsoft)

- LA consultation on use of system

• “decoupling” data loading from validation

• disk storage and access

• changes to snapshots

• 64bit upgrade



Spring 2010: what happened?

• problems with the web servers

• processing demands were greater than expected

• multiple and repeated exports of data



What are we doing?

• new Star Chamber procedures

• managing usage and functionality

• removing known bottlenecks

• 64bit technology for new web servers and database servers

• testing at MicroSoft Lab

1. Autumn 2009 Pilot

• Update– went well – large number of returns received and quickly– lots of useable curriculum and qualifications data– helped prepare LAs for 2010 collections

• See handout in delegate packs



2. Spring 2010

• High level stats as at Friday 12 March:

– Over 20,000 returns, >94% schools in England– Three quarters of these were approved– 66 LAs approved all data for all schools plus a

central file– Over 100 academies had made a return

1. A complete SWF return i.e. data from all schools, as well as the central file

2. & 3. No missing data for key items and for other items no more than 10% missing

4. No errors or queries on an approved return (i.e. after cleaning) without a note

5. There are no duplicate records or returns that still have multiple sources

6. Scope checks

8. Distribution checks – LA distributions are close (+/- 10%) to those published in the Sept 2009 Workforce SFR

• Staff “acting up” in schools – preference is for information on the acting up position

• Absence collected for previous academic year – defined as 1/9/09 to 31/8/10

• Absent on census day no longer needs to be provided

• Date of arrival in school – required for staff who started from 1/9/09 but don’t provide if not sure

• Vacancy subject for special schools – use “not applicable” or “primary curriculum” not “SEN”

• Definition of temporarily filled post – as per 618g

• Headcounts of educational psychologists– number of full-time educational psychologists– number of part-time educational psychologists– FTE of part-time educational psychologists

• Advisory teachers considered to be “other support staff” even though have their own post

• Post of Teaching Assistant – please use rather than Support Staff

• Teacher Number – please provide, without this can’t match in qualifications from the GTC

• Destination/origin to be provided for leavers/starters from Sept 2009

• Curriculum hours: should be recorded to 2 decimal places

• Notes must be added to unresolved queries
