Purpose of this presentation (and the next two by John and Harvey)
To …………….• introduce everyone to the issues• make sure we share the same understanding• provide raw material and options for discussion in the break-out
sessions later
Not to …………• provide the final answers and solutions
(that is what this Workshop is here to help progress!)

ResourcesFor what and where from?
![Page 13: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
13
Resources: Funds and staff-time
Needed to:
1. generate map data for each nation2. create the specifications3. coordinate the project4. operate the portal to provide access to the data
![Page 14: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
14
Potential sources of funds and staff-time
Options…….• Geological Surveys agree to fund own data generation?• some Geological Surveys agree to provide support to those who cannot generate their own
data?• a core of Geological Surveys agree to provide resources to coordinate the project and
operate the portal (BGS is prepared to be one of these)• EU provide funds to take the project forward (there is a real possibility in the
eContentplus programme)• What other sources are available……..?
![Page 15: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
15
What are our strategies for nations needing technical and funding assistance?
![Page 16: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
16
Strategies for assistance • Some nations will need technical and/or
resource assistance to take part• Possible solutions:
• OneGeology Help Teams to work with staff of the Survey
• Other Surveys agree to scan/convert/load data
But…….
• How will we provide the assistance?
• How are we going to fund this?
![Page 17: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
17
Who owns the data?Intellectual Property Rights and
Copyright
![Page 18: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
18
Who owns the data?• Simple assumption - each Geological Survey provider retains ownership of
the intellectual property of the data they contribute• But what are implications if there are different use conditions applied by
different Geological Surveys?– Will some geological Surveys wish to restrict use or charge?
• Can we develop a model (template) IPR Agreement which all can agree on?
– This is what INSPIRE will do for European spatial data
![Page 19: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
19
Relationships with other initiatives
![Page 20: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
20
What other related initiatives are there and how do we link to them?
• For example - INSPIRE, GEOSS, AEGOS…..– (more on these on Thursday)
• How do we get to know about those initiatives which are relevant?
• How do we achieve a constructive and worthwhile links with them that add value?
![Page 21: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
21
What are the risks and problems?
![Page 22: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
22
The risks and problems• Not getting the message across about what OneGeology is/is not• Diverse views of what OneGeology should be and do
– map or interoperability, simple or sophisticated• Encouraging participation• Perceived overlap/conflict with other international geoscience initiatives• Ownership and “geo-politics”• Internal national complications
– (eg which survey/institute should be the representative; priority of OneGeology against other tasks)• Range of participant capability • Where will the funds/resources come from?• Sustaining the initiative
challenges and opportunities
![Page 23: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
23
How will we communicate the project to others …..?
![Page 24: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
24
Communication, PR and Marketing Do we assume we want to …….
• Keep the profile of the project high?• Use all ethical and legal means to do that?• Produce scientific papers, conference
presentations, articles, press and media releases? ….and …..?
How do we best achieve this?
• Should we have one Team responsible for communication?
![Page 25: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
25
How will we recruit additional Geological Surveys …..?
![Page 26: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
26
Recruiting more Geological Surveys to OneGeology
• How do we continue to add more Surveys to the list of participants?
• Are there any obvious methods that we have not used to date?
• Can we use OneGeology Regional Teams and their contacts to help us to recruit more nations?
![Page 27: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
27
Workshop results and outcomes
![Page 28: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
28
We would like to use the Workshop to develop and AGREE a series of
resolutions
For example
1. "Geological Surveys will work together to create a distributed international geological information
system of digital data through the use of a common standard and protocol, that does not impinge on ownership or control of data, and builds upon existing national data systems."
![Page 29: 1 The OneGeology project IC GS Ian Jackson, February 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062619/55179d1155034645368b59b9/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
