SubangJayacrimefighting initiative laudedByT.H.TEOH

POLICE should liberalise theway they work with residen-tial communities, includingproviding crucial informa-tion on crime statistics, soas to help reduce the crimerate.

That was the key messageduring a briefing on SJ Alertin Subang Jaya recently, where Kelana Jaya MP LohGwo-Bume stated that a

well-informed communitywas one that could work to-gether with police to fightcrime more effectively.

"We need police to be moreliberal with communities, es-pecially with initiatives suchas the SJ Alert. Police shouldtap SJ Alert to get more in-formation out to the commu-nity in Subang Jaya."

SJ Alert SMS (Short Mes-sage System), SJ Alert EMS(Electronic Mailing System)

andSJ Alert Web Forum (In-ternet Discussion Forum),are free community servicesmade available to all resi-dents of Subang Jaya, UEPSubang Jaya (USJ), PutraHeights and Bandar Sunwayin Selangor.

The main. co-ordinator forthe SJ Alert service, RobertChan, said it presently had3,399 subscribed memberswith the number growing. .

It used to receive weekly

crime statistics from four PO"lice stations - Bandar Sun-way, Subang Jaya, USJ andPritra Heights. This arrange-men.t however, was halted ayear ago by police.

"With information, thepublic can be alert and lookout for suspicious charactersin their neighbourhood. Weare not the police," Chan saidwhen asked if people couldreport crime directly to SJAlert,.adding that the public

should contact the police toreport a crime.

Given the potential ad-vantages, Loh said, "I workclosely with the police andI believe they can decide ifthis community initiative isresponsible enough to workwith. I will raise it with theHome Minister and also inParliament to reinstate therelease of crime. statistics tothe community to keep thembetter informed."

Subang Jaya State assem-blyman Hannah Yeoh saidSJ Alert had played a piv-otalrole in the communityby keeping them informedof crime, community eventsand initiatives such as therecent Balik Kampung cam-paIgn.

Residents who wish totake part in the initiative canvisit www.sjalert.com.my orSMS 012 6933996 or 0122056885.
