To build a sustainable future for Australia and the wider world, our leaders need to identify and govern the right major projects
Major projects amount to $6-9 trillion a year globally, or approximately eight percent of global GDP*
Such projects play an increasingly important role in addressing the 21st century’s most critical issues, from infrastructure to environmental and social challenges These projects do more than define a direction of an organisation – they help determine the future growth of countries
*Source: Business Council of Australia, ‘Securing Investment in Australia’s Future’, Report of the Project Costs Task Force, 2013
However, these large-scale and technology-driven projects also place extensive demands on governance and leadership Project delays and financial blowouts are often the result of two factors:
− failure to ask the right questions regarding strategic fit, risk and return
− a deficiency in leadership practices, collaborative engagement, and strategic and design thinking
John Grill recognised the need for Australia to plan and deliver major projects more effectively, after examining large projects in resources, infrastructure and government over his career The John Grill Centre for Project Leadership was established in 2012 to meet this need
