HOMEWORK #1 ---Due Wednesday/Thursday next week. Write a paragraph about what your life is like. Write ~10-15+ sentences about what your life is like, such as: 1) What opportunities and freedoms do you have (different from when you were younger)? EX: Now, I can drive a car, but I couldn’t do that before. 2) What duties/jobs do you have? EX: I have to earn my own pocket money. I should help stop prejudice. 3) What job dream do you have & what will it be like? What travel, sports, romance, spiritual, etc. dreams do you have? EX: I want to be a doctor. Doctors help people, but they see lots of blood. I want to learn the saxophone. I want to go on a honeymoon to Hawaii. I want to learn God’s will for my life. 4) What stresses/disappointments do you have? EX: I have to do difficult homework. I got a bad grade in 1 class last semester. My dream guy left me. 5) What worries you? EX: I’m worried about finding a job. I’m worried about being a good boyfriend/girlfriend. 6) What makes you happy about the age you are? EX: I’m happy that I can go on trips with friends to other cities. I’m happy I can make my own choices. Example #1: Meredith-Leigh Pleasants It is quite a challenge being a student athlete at this age. Many games last until the late hours; win or lose, you still have to go home and study for the three tests you have tomorrow, and hopefully none of your friends will call to tell you about the new rumor about you. Being 16 is also about finding yourself. You’re picking classes that can determine which college you get into and that can potentially determine your future. Then you get your license and get your first taste of independence. It’s an adventure. I love being 16, though — beginning adulthood but still being a kid. The best part about being 16 is growing up and finding yourself, discovering your likes and dislikes for the future. I enjoy the opportunity I have to play sports and choose my classes. The one hard thing about being 16 is there is a lot of pressure to make difficult decisions. Pressure from friends, family, teachers and coaches can be overwhelming at times. Pressure to pick certain colleges, make certain grades, wear particular clothes and hang out with certain people. Everyone around me pressures me one way or another. My life is always on go, go, go crazy. I am constantly out playing a sport or studying or doing homework or out with friends. There is very little downtime, since I play three seasons that overlap. The first day cross-country is over, basketball begins; then, the last day of basketball, soccer begins. Trying to maintain a high GPA is a workout just by itself. Sometimes it drives me into crash mode. Crash mode is when I take a weekend or a day and

Crash mode is when I take a weekend or a day and refuse to do anything except eat, sleep and watch TV. It's great until Monday comes and it's back to the go-go-go again. It's not so bad though; being preoccupied with sports and school means I stay out of trouble and make good decisions, and it makes for a nice college resume. I love being 16 and the go-go-go balancing act; it's a fun challenge and I wouldn't have it any other way! Meredith-Leigh Pleasants is a student athlete at Jordan-Matthews High School in Siler City, North Carolina, a small rural town located in the center of the state.

Example #2 Stephen Serene Now that I am 16, I am starting to feel responsible for helping to solve some of the world's big issues. Until now, I have blamed poverty and disease in Africa, global warming, discrimination, national debt accumulation and war on adults. Now that I am about to become an adult I am gaining the ability to help mitigate these problems.

I recently received my driver’s license and began driving instead of using public transportation. My contribution to global warming has increased significantly and I must now work to fix that. My impending entrance into civil society also brings responsibilities. Soon, I will have to work to decrease discrimination and national debt. Until now I have just been content to educate myself about these

issues. In the near future, however, I will have to decide to what extent I wish to help those in sickness and poverty. Will I study development? If I do, will I live intermittently in developing countries and America, with the family sacrifices such a life would entail? If I work in an unrelated field, how much money will I give to charity? I am very excited to try and help the world. Yet I fear the day when the problems I have ignored or failed to solve lie on my conscience.Others examples at: http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1535342,00.html
