• The 2nd meeting of the RARS Implementation Group was held on 19-20 May 2008 in Geneva

• Tremendous progress has been achieved in the last 12 months with the development of the global RARS network– RARS data is now routinely available from all parts of the RARS network

(Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific)– RARS data is routinely quality-controlled

• It is predicted that the global coverage of the RARS network will reach 82% by the end of 2009 (compared to a target of 90%) - additional actions were agreed during the meeting to try to achieve the coverage target

• After extensive discussions, detailed agreements were reached on a coordinated RARS approach to– Section 1 of the BUFR message– Abbreviated bulletin headers– GTS file-naming convention

• These agreements have now been embedded in the RARS Operator Standards (which is a hybrid document containing both relevant standards information and operational requirements)

The major achievement of the 2nd RARS Implementation Group meeting was the agreement on a harmonised approach to

• Section 1 of the BUFR message• Abbreviated bulletin headers• GTS file-naming convention

This harmonised approach will ensure that RARS data is made available to the Global NWP user community in a standardised and accessible manner

• The 2nd meeting of the IGDDS Implementation Group was held on 20-21 May 2008 in Geneva

• Dissemination coverage and capacity is similar to that reported in 2007– Coverage over the Asia-Pacific region is provided by CMA’s

FengYunCast– Coverage over the Europe and the Americas is provided by EUMETCast– RosHydromet has expressed interest in offering their MITRA system to

augment coverage over Europe and Asia

• CMA have donated 11 reception stations to developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region and has provided a comprehensive training course in English

• The GEONETCast Americas (NOAA) system is now operational - in view of its data content this is considered to be an element of GEONETCast rather than the IGDDS

• Concerning WIS compliance, emphasis was placed at the meeting on the need for:

– uniqueness of filename– an accompanying metadata file– catalogues to comply with the relevant search interface standards

• EUMETSAT has developed a Product Navigator (on-line disseminated catalogue) to help users locate data. It has been agreed with CMA and NOAA that this Product Navigator will also be disseminated on their systems

• EUMETSAT took an action to facilitate the harvesting of metadata from the Product Navigator (setting up an interface to allow the remote query of the product navigator, and the standardisation of the catalogue information formats within the Product Navigator).

Integrated Global Data Dissemination Integrated Global Data Dissemination Service (IGDDS) - continuedService (IGDDS) - continued

• Interest was expressed by IGDDS Operators in DCPC designation– Process– Schedule

• Collection and consolidation of data requirements (i.e. what data should be disseminated in which region) remains somewhat problematic, with the possible exceptions of Europe and Africa
