THIS OWNER OPERATOR HAS TWO AWESOME REDEEMERS

VORIS’ REDEEMER

Most of us are content to have just one “Redeemer” in our life, but Voris Steward of Houston, TX has two. Within his strong Christian faith, Voris found his ultimate Redeemer, but he also has an amazing show-quality work truck he named “Redeemer” to open up the conversation with others about how they too can find their salvation and redemption. His cool black KW catches people’s eyes, and then the big white cross on the back of the cab often catches their hearts – and that is what Voris was hoping to accomplish with his truck when he built it. He did not build it to glorify himself, but instead to glorify his Redeemer and to help spread the “good news” to those around him.

Born and raised around Houston, TX, Voris Steward (37) grew up around trucks and the construction industry. His mother and father were never married, but he always had a good relationship with his dad. His father drove a truck for Nabisco, and his uncles (on his mother’s side), Jerome and Benjamin Smith, had a construction company, as did his grandfather, Daldon Smith. Specializing in demolition, excavating, dirt hauling, and land clearing, these operations used a lot of heavy machinery, which required trucks to move

them around, so Voris was no stranger to trucks or the trucking industry.

Although Voris attended (and graduated) college, he was never very excited about going to school – from an early age, he knew that he wanted to be involved in construction and/or trucking, like the rest of his family. By the time he was ten years old, Voris was already working in his uncle Benjamin’s shop, greasing trucks, cleaning trucks, and moving vehicles around the yard. Not long after that, his uncle Jerome taught him how to drive and how to operate the heavy equipment. After graduating from high school in 1993, Voris moved on to Lamar University in Beaumont, TX with a full academic scholarship, and eventually earned an Associate of Applied Science and Diesel Mechanics degree.

While still in college, Voris got a job at a local truck shop in Beaumont working for a guy named Donny Rollins. This shop, among other things, specialized in front end work and mobile alignment service. Voris and Donny got very close rather quickly and Donny became a father-figure to Voris. After Donny suffered a heart attack, he left young Voris (maybe 21 at the time) in charge of running the business for several months. Voris

gained valuable knowledge and confidence during this time, realizing that he could eventually run his own business. After earning his degree, he stayed in Beaumont for another year, working with Donny, until one of his uncles asked him to come back and start working in the family shop and do some driving. He did that for about two years, and then got the itch to go out on his own.

In December of 1999, Voris bought his first truck – a 1996 Freightliner FLD with a big sleeper. Powered by his favorite engine, a Detroit Series 60, hooked to a super-10 transmission and 3.90 rears, Voris leased on at Stine Truck Line, a flatbed outfit in Buda, TX. Although he was licensed to run in all 48 states, he primarily ran between the midwest and the east coast, hauling tractors, building materials, and steel. He learned a lot and loved it, but being out on the road for long periods of time got old fast, so after about a year, he moved over to PCI Transportation in Houston, and started hauling lumber and steel closer to home. After a year of that, he went back to his roots, hauling sand and gravel for Aggregate Haulers. Still driving that Freightliner FLD, Voris stayed with Aggregate Haulers for two years, until 2004, when he finally got his own authority and formed VES Transport.

With his own authority and his own end dump trailer, he continued hauling for Aggregate Haulers, but he also added back-hauls of mulch and potting soil. His dream was always to buy a lowboy and haul heavy equipment, but that dream would have to wait. Presented with an opportunity to haul the mulch full-time, Voris bought a new walking floor trailer and went to work. Six short months later, he bought a second truck, a 1994

Page 11: 10-4 Magazine - January 2013

Cover Feature Page 11

Freightliner FLD 120, along with an Eagle Bridge conveyor trailer (potato wagon), and then hired a driver to run his first truck so he could drive the second truck and pull the potato wagon. Then, through a series of coincidences and favorable events, Voris ended up with a loaner lowboy trailer and started hauling heavy equipment on occasion for one of his mulch customers. Before long, he started to build up a large clientele of heavy haul customers, and he still had a driver in the other truck hauling mulch.

In 2006, Voris bought a third truck – a 1999 Kenworth W900L with a 72-inch sleeper, and hired a second driver to drive his other Freightliner. A year later, in 2007, Voris bought a brand new lowboy of his own and was now, officially, a full-time heavy equipment hauler. That same year he married his longtime girlfriend Jocelyn, bought a house, and, later that year, his daughter Cerianna was born. On top of all that, his new wife Jocelyn also earned her Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy that year – 2007 was a very big year for Voris.

The following year, in 2008, Voris bought the 1994 Kenworth W900L you see on our cover and centerfold (and these pages) this month. Of course, it looked nothing like it does today – it was dark purple with a 60-inch sleeper and it had been sitting for a couple years, so it was pretty rough. But Voris knew exactly what he wanted to do – build the ultimate heavy-haul truck – a project that would end up taking over two years. While working on his new project, he continued to drive his other Kenworth, so he was in no hurry. But, in 2009, as the economy came crashing down, Voris was forced to let his two drivers go and park the Freightliners. Since the trucks and trailers were all paid for, he did not have to sell anything. Now, it was just Voris – one man – with a whole bunch of trucks and various trailers.

Over the next two years, Voris hauled anything and everything, working on his project

truck whenever possible. After removing the sleeper, he had the frame doubled, added a drop axle, and had it painted black. He also designed and built a custom air-ride system for the front end, and the cab, as well. Wanting more flexibility with weight placement, he lengthened the track of his sliding fifth wheel, which can now slide back and forth about six feet. The truck, which has a 260-inch wheelbase, had a Detroit Series 60 engine (of course) and a 15-speed overdrive transmission, but Voris wanted more pulling power. “Tweaking” a few things on the engine, he was able to accomplish 800+ horsepower, and then he added a 4-speed auxiliary transmission, making the truck a true 2-stick unit. If need be, he can crawl up a wall with this truck! Next, it was time to make the heavy-duty KW look good.

Wanting to do something a little different, Voris modified the truck’s double headlights by cutting a portion of the fiberglass out and then

installing a single, high-intensity headlight on each side. To protect the truck’s 22-inch tapered Valley Chrome Bumper, Voris installed a bumper lift kit from Twelve Gauge Customs (unlike the typical “flip” kits, which swing out, Voris’ bumper slides out and then up for additional clearance). He also installed a Twelve Gauge drop visor, strapless air cleaners, stainless body drop panels, Talladega “single hump” rear fenders, seven-inch pipes, police-style spotlights, a one-piece deck plate, and a rear light bar from Valley Chrome. Wanting to keep the chrome to a minimum, Voris had the wheels, visor, mirror brackets, breather screens, grille surround, steps, tank straps and fairings, exhaust bands, and steel deck plate all powder-coated black. He also replaced the cab lights with nearly-invisible LED lights, installed a billet grille, built a custom light box behind the cab to hide the air bags, and hand-fabricated his own fiberglass fuel tank bracket covers. The final touch was installing a granite floor in the cab and a pair of “Legacy LO” black leather seats.

Doing almost all of the work himself, the truck made its debut at the truck show in Dallas, TX in August of 2010, where it earned a mere 3rd place trophy. Voris knew he could do better, but it was time to put the truck to work. After the show, the black Kenworth became Voris’ daily driver, and he loved it – for a while. In July of 2011, while driving on a small road in Louisiana, a drunk driver pulled out in front of Voris. Not able to stop or avoid the car, Voris plowed into it hard, destroying the car and wrecking his truck’s front end. Thankfully, nobody was hurt, but it would take Voris eight months to get the truck repaired and back on the road. But Voris vowed to make it even better, this time!

After having the hood repaired by someone else, Voris went to work on the front suspension. Before, he had designed a two-valve system that went up and down (like most of them), but now, the truck has a four-valve system. Not only can Voris make the truck go up and down, but now it

Page 12: 10-4 Magazine - January 2013

Cover Feature Page 12

can go side to side, as well. This comes in handy when trying to level-out the truck or get into (or out of) a tight spot. It is also fun in parades and convoys, because Voris can make his truck dance! When he rebuilt this system the second time, he also ran larger lines so it would go up and down (and side to side) faster. Besides a few small things here and there on the exterior of the truck, he basically fixed it and then put it back to the way it was before the accident. But, at this point, he decided to completely redo the interior.

The interior of the truck already had nice seats and a black granite floor, but Voris wanted to do it all. He began by removing the angled section of the dash so that it was flat all the way across (he mostly did this so his daughter could watch movies on the dash-mounted DVD player from the passenger seat). He then had the dash panels powder-coated black, and then replaced the button-tuck door panels and headliner with smooth black leather. All of the switches and gauges are chrome, and Voris took every one of them apart and replaced the orange indicator lights with blue LEDs. Next, he replaced the stock side windows and vents with one-piece glass and then installed aftermarket electric motors on each of the windows and mirrors. He also installed a big radio, a billet steering wheel, custom stainless kick panels, and blue accent lighting throughout. Now, he was ready for a rematch in Dallas!

Getting the truck back on the road just a few months before the 2012 show in Dallas, Voris was excited to see if his new and improved truck could compete. At the end of the show, his truck was awarded 1st place in his Working Bobtail class, so I guess you can say he did well. This is also where we first met Voris, only to see him again a few months later at the 4 State/CSM show in Joplin, MO. His subtle truck, sitting amongst all the fancy, flashy, colorful rides that were parked around it, for some reason just stood out to us and we just couldn’t resist it – or maybe it was Voris’ magnetic personality.

Voris named his truck “Redeemer” as a reflection of his steadfast Christian beliefs and designed a logo, shaped and based on the classic KW badge, which features a cross, amongst other things. A trucker friend, Caleb Eilers of Odessa, TX, sent the logo to JR at Lifetime Nut Covers and had him engrave Voris a custom hood emblem and then gave it to him as a gift. After that, Voris had JR engrave the logo on his fuel filler caps, too. With a vinyl graphic of the logo on the back of his cab, Voris gets approached all the time by people to talk about his faith – which is exactly why he did it!

Currently, VES Transport consists of four trucks and four trailers, but just one driver – Voris. But, with this kind of diversity, he can haul just about anything, and if something extra comes up, he can call a friend and put him in one of his other trucks to cover it. Typically, Voris pulls his 55-ton

2008 Fontaine Lowboy and hauls equipment, but he also has a flatbed, a walking floor trailer, and an end dump. Voris likes staying near home, because he does not like to be away from his family for long. Speaking of family, Voris’ mother, Mamie Smith, who is semi-retired, loves to go out on the road with her son all of the time, and also helps out, when she can, in the shop. When not on the road, Voris loves to sing in the choir at his church, attend various charity events, and go to Christian concerts with his wife and daughter.

Not wanting to take all the glory or credit himself, Voris wanted to thank a few people for all their help and support. First and foremost, he wanted to thank his “Redeemer” – the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, for all of the blessings in his life. He also wanted to thank his wife, Jocelyn, his mother and father, his grandparents, Daldon and Callie Smith, for setting such a solid example for him to follow, and his uncles, Jerome and Benjamin, for teaching him the ropes and helping him get started. Voris also has a great bunch of friends (more like brothers) who help him, including Howard “Cowboy” Rogers, Donald “Popsicle” Krushall, Arthur “Powdercoat” White, Robert Jefferson, Von Harris, Victor Garza and Ellis Campbell. Voris also wanted to thank his five-year-old daughter Cerianna for all the fun she adds to his life – he absolutely loves spending time with her and cherishes the privilege of being able to teach her how to be a caring and compassionate adult when she grows up.

Everything on Voris’ truck is real – nothing is fake. Nothing was done just for show or for looks, and everything has a purpose. Actually, Voris is a lot like his truck. He is an honest, hard-working, straight-forward man with a purpose, and that purpose is to glorify and bring honor to his Redeemer (not the truck). Voris Steward may have two Redeemers in his life, but one of them is there for you, too. And like it says on the back of one of his friend’s trucks, “The offer stands.” And it always will.

The Performance Zone Page 15

By Performance Specialist Bruce C. Mallinson

CURRENT UPDATESThis past spring we started construction on our new engineering

center, which will be equipped with three dynos – a new Taylor chassis dyno for semi trucks, a used pickup truck and race car dyno (capable of 2,500 hp), and a used engine dyno that will hold around 2,000 fl ywheel horsepower. As of December 6th, the Taylor dyno was up and running, and within two days, we already had fi ve trucks on it. The other two dynos are in the process of fi nal installation. Along with the dynos, we have added another four garage bays, an engine building room, an engineering department, and storage space. The new addition should be completed by the time this publication starts hitting the streets. We now have three engineers at our Saxonburg, PA location – one mechanical and two electrical. In Indianapolis, where we make the Pittsburgh Power Performance Computer, we have another four more engineers – one mechanical, one software, and two electrical. Six months ago, we hired Ethan Fortuna, a recent graduate from Penn State University (Electrical Engineering) – and this guy is sharp! An owner operator was recently speaking to Don (our service manager) and I about his DD5 Detroit gaining 20 lbs. of oil pressure. Interesting, I thought – usually, the problem is losing oil pressure, not gaining pressure. Don and I decided to install a test mechanical oil pressure gauge to verify the reading that the gauge on the instrument panel was showing. Ethan was standing there and said, “Wait a minute, I think I know what the problem is. I saw something about that in the ECM program.” About 15 minutes later, Ethan walked into my offi ce and said, “The oil pressure problem is solved.” I said, “Fantastic!

We could have spent hours trying to fi nd that problem!” I think that Ethan is going to be a very valuable asset to our operation here. Winter is fi nally here, and for those of us who love to snowmobile, it’s time to put away the Harleys and get out the sleds! This year’s annual Owner Operator Snowmobile Conference is scheduled for February 28th through March 2nd, with checkout on March 3rd. We will be staying at the Flying Saddle Resort in Alpine, Wyoming (307-654-4422). When making reservations, please mention you are with the Owner Operator Snowmobile Conference. There are rental snowmobiles available in the town of Alpine – the Flying Saddle will give you their phone number or you can fi nd it on the internet. The address of the Flying Saddle Resort is 118878 Hwy. 89 and 26, Alpine, WY 83128. Please visit their website (www.fl yingsaddleresort.com) for more information. Do you realize what it’s like to have 22 owner operators on high-performance snowmobiles sitting at the bottom of a mountain? It doesn’t matter the machine – semi truck or snowmobile – if there is a mountain, we have to go up it as fast as possible! Let the competition begin!! Please join us if you’re up for a great time and you enjoy the company of other people in your industry. On a sadder note, last month (11-28-12), Dale Evans, an owner operator friend and client of Pittsburgh Power, lost his 34 year-old son in a tragic automobile accident in Henderson, Texas. A young lady driving without insurance and no driver’s license pulled out in front of Luke Evans while he was riding his motorcycle and he was killed instantly. He was an auto body repairman in town and was on his way back to work from lunch when the accident happened. Unfortunately, Luke did not have life insurance, so Dale had to use his savings to bury his son. The photo here shows Dale and his wife with three of the grandchildren. Luke is the father of four young girls – Katelynn (1), Allison (3), Kristi (6), and Adriana (9). Luke’s wife is a stay-at-home mother and now has no income. If you’re reading this article, I ask you to please send $1.00 (or whatever amount you can afford) to the Luke Evans Tragedy Fund, Texas Bank, P.O. Box 1990, Henderson, TX 75653. Any gift will help. Please help this family if you can. Your $1 (or more) will go a longway. Four years ago, you, the proud and humble owner operators of North America, helped a young man by the name of Cody from Butler, PA to go to China for stem cell surgery for his eyes. He was born blind, but can now see, thanks in part to your generosity. Cody is now a student at the Butler Public School. We can make a difference when we help each other. Thank you in advance for your generosity once again. If you have any comments or questions, please contact me at Pittsburgh Power in Saxonburg, PA by calling (724) 360-4080 or via e-mail at [email protected]. Happy New Year!

UPI’S UPDATED & IMPROVED WEBSITE

New Truck-Related Products & Services

Longtime 10-4 Magazine Advertiser Enhances Their Online Presence

United Pacific Industries has been working diligently for the last year and nine months on their new and improved website. The vision of that effort spent is now available for you to see at www.uapac.com. United Pacific Industries (UPI) set out to build a website that was as comprehensive as their product line. It was a complete team effort of internal and outsourced resources to complete the website project. The website now features a “New Items” section that is updated every month, an expansive collection of their latest flyers and flip-animated catalogs, and more access to product images than ever before. “We want our website to be as complete as possible,” says David Szatkowski, Director of Marketing at UPI, “so we worked and will continue to work really hard to make sure that everything that UPI has is made available to our customers.” As the aftermarket trucking

industry becomes more and more competitive, a strong web presence and online catalogs are a major part of setting businesses apart. UPI took a big step forward with their new website. This site is a major marketing tool moving forward for both internal and customer product reference and purchase. David went on to state, “We believe that our new website is powerful, sharp and functional, and a great reflection of our theme – Quality Innovation and Design.” Responding to the needs of their consumers, UPI’s newly-designed website will make it easier for their customers to find new product announcements and product images. “We want our customers to have as much access as possible to what they need to make informed purchases,” said David. Based in Carson, California, UPI is a manufacturer of aftermarket big rig truck custom parts and accents. We at 10-4 Magazine are proud to have them in our fine family of longtime advertisers. United Pacific Industries can be found online at www.uapac.com or by calling (310) 638-5988.

The Spirit of the American Trucker

Elk Mountain in Wyoming can be a scary place, even for the most experienced truck drivers. With howling winds, driving rain, thunderous hail storms, complete white-outs and black ice, it is not a place for the meek. Old truckers have a lot of respect for this place, because with their experience comes knowledge. And a lack of knowledge is not something you want when you are crossing the Rocky Mountains in the dead of winter!

DAVID HEMELRIGHT’S “HUSKY” RV

Weird & Wonderful Old Time Trucks

By Photographers and Writers John & Shirley Sponholtz

If you pass this truck driving along the road one day, chances are good you’ll notice (and remember) this 1969 Brockway 361. With beautiful beach and snow scenes painted on the dry box, the “Husky House” is a full-fledged motorhome with air-ride suspension and is a pleasure to drive for owner David Hemelright of Lenoir City, Tennessee. In 1989, the original transmission and power plant were replaced with a new Series III Big Cam Cummins with 400 horsepower and a five-speed overdrive transmission. An International front axle and a heavy-duty radiator were added, raising the cab four inches above its original position on the frame. The dry box that replaced the original fifth wheel sports a hand-painted mural created by Chuck Gamber (A.K.A. “Jack of Arts”) of Ellicott City, MD. Beginning on the driver’s side, the artwork shows an enticing beach scene that morphs to a snow scene on the passenger side with Husky dogs pulling a sled. In 2004, a Volvo air-ride suspension with 3:73 gears replaced the single-drive axle with air tug. Add in two bunks, a cook stove and a chemical toilet, plus a Western Star sleeper to improve the visual effect, and you have a rolling home that has traveled to many shows around the Northeast.

WILKINS TRUCK CHROME

Page 33: 10-4 Magazine - January 2013

Tech-Tips & Tid-Bits Page 33

Are you tough enough to drive a pink truck? If so, buy some fundraiser tickets and roll the dice, because if they call your name in March at the truck show in Louisville, you could be the proud owner of a highly-customized pink and black Peterbilt. Performance Diesel Inc. (PDI) out of St. George, Utah, with help from several sponsors, built the truck and have been selling fundraiser tickets for it to raise money (and awareness) to help fight breast cancer and find a cure. The truck is a completely rebuilt 2001 Peterbilt 379, with an estimated value of around $80,000 – and it can be all yours for the price of just one $10 raffle ticket (or a few more).

This fundraiser is for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), a not-for-profit organization founded in 1993. The mission of the BCRF is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime by providing critical funding for innovative clinical and translational research at leading medical centers worldwide, and increase public awareness about good breast health. BCRF-funded research has helped save lives and significantly improved the quality of care and survivorship for thousands of breast cancer patients in the past two decades.

All of the money raised will be donated to the BCRF. Various members of the trucking industry came together and covered all of the costs associated with the rebuilding of this truck.

Sponsors include: Performance Diesel Inc. (PDI), Jones Performance, Bridgestone, Twelve Gauge Customs, ASET, PPG Paint, IDEAL Distributors, Lincoln Chrome, 4 State Trucks, Valley Chrome Plating, NOVUS Glass, Bloomer Trailers, Setco LIPE Clutch, Bad Ass Custom Truck Parts, Best Deal Spring Inc., Dura-Lite Radiators, National Seating, Lifetime Nut Covers, FASS, Kenworth of St. George, Parts Plus, Stars & Stripes Show Truck Events, PKY Truck Beauty Championship, and Rainbow Sign & Banner.

The pink truck with a stand-up sleeper and black fenders is powered by a strong Cummins Signature ISX engine (painted pink) with a PDI Stage 1 turbo kit and ECM tune, an 18-speed transmission, and a high-performance LIPE clutch. It also features a custom drop visor and air-ride from Twelve Gauge Customs, painted body drop panels, Lincoln Chrome exhaust, a custom hood and front fenders from Jones Performance, and custom paint by PPG. In addition to painted tanks and air cleaners, the exterior also features plenty of “old school” pinstriping. Bridgestone fit the truck with all new rubber, Valley Chrome provided the front bumper, and Bad Ass Custom Truck Parts donated the fiberglass rear fenders. The interior features a painted floor and painted dash panels by 4 State Trucks, a custom-painted white and pink steering wheel, and black leather seats provided by National Seating.

ARE YOU TOUGH ENOUGH?DONATE MONEY FOR A CHANCE TO WIN THIS TRUCK

The breast cancer awareness truck made a cross-country tour of America last year, traveling to the Great West Trucking Show in Las Vegas, NV, the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas, TX, the Big Iron Classic in Kasson, MN, Truckin’ For Kids Show & Drags in Irwindale, CA, the Golden State Trucking Expo in Pomona, CA, PDI’s Customer Appreciation Dyno Event & Pride and Polish Contest in St. George, UT, and the National Finals Rodeo/Cowboy Christmas in Las Vegas, NV. Fundraiser tickets were sold at all of these events, and a few others, throughout the year. In March of 2013, at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, KY (March 21-23), the final tickets will be sold, the winner will be drawn, and then the truck will be given away. The winner does not need to be present to win, but it is always better when they are!

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death due to cancer. The American Cancer Society’s most recent estimates for breast cancerin the United States for 2012 show that the chance of a woman having an invasive breast cancer some time during her life is a little less than 1 in 8. Please help PDI support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and donate today. Fundraiser tickets are available for sale at $10 each, or additional tickets can be purchased at a discounted rate of three for $25, seven for $50, or 16 for $100. There is no limit, so please feel free to give generously! Charity tickets can be purchased in person at the Louisville truck show this March, or at PDI’s headquarters located at 687 N. Industrial Rd., St. George, UT 84770 (or you can just mail them a check). For more information, please call PDI at (800) 511-1231 or visit them online at www.pdidiesel.com.

Ask The Law Page 35TM

Questions about Logbooks, Tie Down Rules, Drug Testing Records & More Answered by Law Enforcement Officials (as of January 2013)

Brought to you as a public service by Ol’ Blue, USA and 10-4 Magazine. Submit

your questions to www.askthelaw.org

CROSSING STATE LINESQ: One of our drivers got cited for not indicating in his logbook when he crossed a state line. Is there such a rule and where can I find the regulation? Thanks – Leo in NevadaA: Provided by Jim Brokaw, formerly a Staff Sergeant with Nebraska State Patrol, Carrier Enforcement Division, Lincoln, Nebraska: Like you, I’m not familiar with any requirement under the FMCSRs that requires a driver to log the time he crosses a state line. The 11 required entries in a log are found in 49 CFR 395.8 – Driver’s Record of Duty Status, which also includes an example of a completed record of duty status, and indicating when a state line is crossed isn’t on this list of required entries. The only reference I was able to find is in 49 CFR 395.15 (i) and it concerns the performance of automatic on-board recording devices which states: “The automatic on-board recording device permits duty status to be updated only when the commercial motor vehicle is at rest, except when registering the time a commercial motor vehicle crosses a state boundary.” The rule doesn’t say you have to register the time a state boundary is crossed, just that the EOBR may permit the update be made while the CMV is in motion. I’m curious where the officer found the requirement. Not knowing which state your driver was in at the time, it could very well be a requirement under a state regulation instead of the federal rules.

TIE DOWN REQUIREMENTSQ: My question is about the proper way to secure a small bobcat skid loader on a trailer while transporting on the highway. As a landscape contractor, I pull a flatbed equipment trailer with a 1-ton pickup truck. If I use a proper grade chain and binder and secure all four corners of the loader, do I need to use four mechanical binders? Thanks – Martin in California

A: Provided by Ofc. Jaime Nunez, California Highway Patrol, Commercial Vehicle Sec-tion, Sacramento, California: In California, Section 29004(a)(3) of the California Vehicle Code requires a vehicle being transported on a conventional trailer to be secured by four independent tie downs. Additionally, each tie down must be capable of adjustment to ensure proper securement during transport. The

working load limit of the securement method must be equal to at least half the weight of the load being transported. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration produces a handbook which describes, in further detail, proper load securement methods. This handbook is available online at www.fmcsa.dot.gov.

DRUG TESTING RECORDSQ: If I have a random or pre-employment drug test that is negative, can I get rid of all the documents regarding it after 1 year? Also, how long do I need to keep a driver’s file after that driver leaves our employment? Thank you – Rick in IllinoisA: Provided by Sgt. Pete Camm (Ret.), California Highway Patrol, Sacramento, California: Title 49 CFR 382.401 (Retention of Records), subparagraph (b)(3) relates negative drug and alcohol test results of less than .02 BAC must be retained for one year. After that time, the record can be purged or maintained, as designated by company policy. In accordance with 49 CFR 391.51(c), Driver Records (a.k.a. DQ files) must be retained for three (3) years after a driver leaves your employment.

OVERWEIGHT CMV DRIVERSQ: I have been hearing for some time now about a new law that will disqualify drivers if they are overweight or their body mass index is not within a certain range. If this is true, can you shed some light on it for me? Thanks – Dean in North DakotaA: Provided by Senior Trooper Monty Dial (Ret.), Texas Highway Patrol, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Garland, Texas: This is now a hotly-contested topic. There are currently no DOT regulations that state if a driver is overweight or they have a BMI (body mass index) of X, then that driver is required to go through extra testing prior to being given their DOT Medical Certificate. FMCSA is currently going through studies and discussions prior to issuing a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that will set the standards for this extra testing. Until this occurs, it is left up to the person doing your DOT medical exam to determine if you being overweight or having a certain BMI will require you to have extra testing.

Words of Wisdom From SharLeigh

Does it seem like time is speeding up, or is life just getting more hectic? Let us take a look back in time and just pick out a few major events that have shaped this modern-day America from the 17th Century to the 21st Century. 17th Century: Jamestown becomes the first permanent English colony; the French explorer LaSalle explores the Mississippi and declares Louisiana for France as a territory; colonial expansion creates major clashes with the Native Americans. 18th Century: the French and Indian War results in England’s expansion of the colonies; the American Revolution – America’s fight for freedom from British rule; George Washington becomes the first American President. 19th Century: Louisiana Purchase and the exploration of this land by Lewis and Clark; Manifest Destiny helped out by the California Gold Rush; the American Civil War; the freeing of the slaves; America becomes a major industrial power. 20th Century: the war to end all wars, World War I, and the world at war, World War II; the atomic bomb; the Iron Curtain of Communism and the start of the Cold War; the space race; the fall of Communism; the creation of the World Wide Web. 21st Century (just the first decade): Y2K computer scare; the 9/11 attacks; the war against terrorism; Barrack Obama becomes America’s first African-American President. With the advent of the modern computer age, our lives and the events of the world have become more connected and much more hectic. But, no matter what is in store for us this year, please remember to count each day as a blessing and know that whatever dilemma we face – as with all things – this too, shall pass.

THE MARCH OF TIME CONTINUES ON

Troy’s Treasures Page 56

BY COLORADO CORRESPONDENT TROY MILLER

With catalogs fi lled with chrome, lights, and everything under the sun for Peterbilt 379 trucks, it has become increasingly diffi cult to build a classic long-nose Pete that stands out from the rest of the crowd. Cody Madsen (26) and McAllister Enterprises of American Fork, Utah, however, seem to have proven that you can still build a unique, cool, fl attop 379 Peterbilt.

Driving for McAllister Enterprises, Cody had a rather simple beginning in the trucking industry. Cody has loved big trucks ever since he was a kid, getting bit by the trucking bug through his father, Lee Madsen, a life-long truck driver. Working as a laborer at the Sunroc truss manufacturing plant in Salt Lake City, his start in trucking was of very humble origins, learning the basics by moving trucks around the truss manufacturer’s property. The day after he turned 18, Cody went in for his driving test and earned his CDL. Once he was old enough to go interstate, Cody got a job

driving for Monster Energy Drinks, hauling what was essentially a mobile bar and VIP room on concert tours. For a young kid with few ties to home, it was the perfect job. With a free ticket to all of the concerts and an exciting life on the road, Cody was one happy driver. After several years on the road, however, Cody wanted something a bit closer to home. Taking a driving job at McAllister Enterprises, Cody started with a lot of dirt work, pulling mainly side-dumps around the greater Salt Lake metropolitan area. Along with running in and out of the dirt pits, Cody also began towing low-boys, hauling heavy equipment and machinery. McAllister is a small, four-truck operation run by Matt McAllister, with young Weston McAllis-ter (who helped us get the truck ready for the photo shoot) waiting for his chance to get on the road, too. During this period, Cody’s truck became a well-known sight around the Salt Lake area, and although it may be a “company ride” Cody has

certainly put his own personal stamp on this unique Peterbilt truck. Painted canary yellow, like the other McAllister trucks, the rig started as a 2007 Peterbilt 379 with a 48-inch fl at-top sleeper. Over the years, the truck has slowly developed into the understated, spotless ride seen on these pages. With an eye to “clean” things up, all of the exterior Peterbilt emblems have been removed from the truck, as well as many of the lights and the horns. Featuring seven fl ush-mounted “penny light” cab lights, the truck is also equipped with seven-inch Dynafl ex fl at-top exhaust stacks and a fl ush-mounted rear deck plate. The truck also features a 20-inch Valley Chrome front bumper mounted to a 12 Gauge Customs bumper lift kit, with a Valley Chrome rear light bar, as well. Other custom touches include an air-bagged front axle, allowing for a very low profi le on the nose of the truck, also from 12 Gauge Customs, and a 12 Gauge visor, as well. The truck also has a set of polished double-hump rear fenders. One very unique feature that the truck has that would easily be overlooked is its PTO system. Wanting to keep the clean look going, the truck does not have either an independent hydraulic tank or the traditional Peterbilt “split” tank, but actually has the hydraulic tank built into the passenger-side step box. It’s a small feature most would not notice, but it keeps the exterior of the truck that much cleaner. But, perhaps the feature Cody’s truck is best known for are the front fenders. Built to look like a Peterbilt Model 379X, the truck features polished

A UNIQUE PETE

Page 57: 10-4 Magazine - January 2013

Troy’s Treasures Page 57

“bicycle-style” aluminum front fenders. Always kept clean, it’s a defining feature of Cody’s ride. The interior is as equally understated as the exterior. Done in tan, the interior features polished gauges, switches and shift tower, Bostrom Wide-Ride mid-back low-rider seats, and many other products from Rockwood, provided by Hub City Chrome in Oregon (now a featured advertiser in the magazine). Sitting on a 280-inch wheelbase, the truck has a long feel thanks to the small sleeper, but not overly long. And this truck isn’t all show and no go. Motivated by a 700+ horsepower ISX Cummins routed through an 18-speed transmission and turning 3.73 gears in 46,000-pound rear ends, the truck most certainly has the power (and gearing) to get on the heavier side of things.

Getting just as dirty as any other working truck out there, the truck has worked as a dirt hauler and a low-boy tractor, though Cody currently spends most of his time pulling the fleet’s most recent trailer addition – a 2011 Wilson 53-foot composite aluminum/steel step-deck with a California-legal sliding spread. Primarily pulling trailer parts and brand new (complete) pickup truck trailers, Cody’s truck can be seen running all over the Western United States. Like other over-the-road trucks, Cody’s ride gets pretty dirty at times, but he never lets it stay that way for long.

When not behind the wheel of his truck, Cody enjoys camping, getting out on the water, and four-wheeling. But, most of all, Cody enjoys spending as much time as possible with the newest addition to his family – his first son, Zane.

He’ll be about five months old when this edition starts hitting the racks, and was a mere month-and-a-half old when the photos were taken. Happily married to his wife, Whitney Madsen, he would like to thank her for putting up with his trucking habit and for supporting him through the long hours and long trips. Cody would also like to thank his boss, Matt McAllister, for, in Cody’s words, “funding his sick addiction” to trucks. Cody also sends thanks out to his father, Lee Madsen, who got him started in the trucking industry all those years ago (Lee still drives), as well as Jim “Higgs” Higgins at 12 Gauge Customs

for helping him get all the chrome and custom touches for his truck. We at 10-4 Magazine would like to thank Cody for his time and commitment to this article. Ever since we first told him that we wanted to put his truck in the magazine, he has been excited and cooperative from that point forward. As you know, at 10-4, it’s not just about the truck, it’s about the driver, too. We loved seeing the enthusiasm Cody had for getting this feature in the magazine. And, being such a hard-working, enthusiastic young man, we’re certain Cody Madsen has many more years of success in the industry ahead of him.

HIGH-VALUE CARGO THEFTS ON THE RISE ONCE AGAIN, AND...

NEW REQUIREMENTS FOR MEDICAL CARDS

Page 59

MEDICAL CARDS. The regulations for commercial vehicle drivers are changing in regards to Federal Medical Certifi cates (medical cards). The changes affect various kinds of drivers differently. The rules remain the same as to which drivers need a medical card while operating a CMV, but drivers will now have to provide an up-to-date copy of this card to the DMV when they obtain it. As part of this process, all CDL holders will now also have to self-certify their classifi cation in which they operate (which will determine their requirements for fi ling their medical card with the state) by 2014, and some may have to do so earlier than that. There are also some changes in regards to who tracks drivers with medical cards. Currently, all trucking outfi ts are responsible for tracking the expiration of medical cards for their drivers. By January 2014, the states will be required to begin tracking the drivers who are maintaining a valid medical card. If the state’s DMV doesn’t have a card on fi le for a driver, they’ll suspend their license. Most states are starting this process now to ensure compliance by 2014, beginning with those who are receiving Federal Medical Certifi cates and CDLs for the fi rst time or renewing them. Drivers in all states, who are required to fi le a Federal Medical Certifi cate, will have to comply with these new requirements by January 30, 2014. In most states, you are now required to show your medical card when renewing a CDL license for interstate commerce. If you renew your CDL but don’t show your medical card, you may be restricted to intrastate-only travel as a result. A number of our clients have reported that their drivers have visited the DMV, renewed their license without showing their medical card (since they haven’t had to in the past), and then later realized that the license they got was restricted to intrastate commerce. Make sure your drivers are aware of this requirement when they renew their CDL. From now on, any time a driver gets a new medical card (good for two years), they will need to notify the DMV when it expires. Another new requirement is that all CDL holders will have to self-certify their type of vehicle operation, which will determine if they

need to submit a Federal Medical Certifi cate to the DMV or not. The new regulations do not change who is required to maintain a medical card, but they do require drivers to report their exemption, if they have one. CDL holders who do not fi le a medical card with the DMV or report an exemption will be assumed to be non-compliant, and their licenses will be suspended on January 30, 2014. With that said, let’s look at who needs a Federal Medical Certifi cate. To determine whether a driver needs to fi le a Federal Medical Certifi cate with the state, you need to know two things: are they an interstate or intrastate driver, and are they in an excepted industry? If a driver crosses a state line at any point during a normal trip, they are an interstate driver. If a driver conducts all of their business within one state, they are an intrastate driver. Exceptions are a little more diffi cult to determine, but some of the DOT’s exceptions include school bus operations, operation of fi re trucks or other rescue vehicles, farming operations (transportation of machinery and/or crops), operation of a private carrier of passengers, and transportation of personal property not for compensation or commercial enterprise. These are just a few of the many DOT exceptions, and each state has a list of their own, as well. Be sure to check if there are special exceptions in your state. There are four options (Tiers) to choose from when determining your classifi cation. Tier 1: Non-Excepted Interstate. You need to provide a valid medical card to the DMV and maintain that the card is up-to-date and on record when you renew or get a new one. Tier 2: Excepted Interstate. No medical card is needed. Tier 3: Non-Excepted Intrastate. You need a valid medical card and you must provide it to the DMV only when a license is issued. Tier 4: Excepted Intrastate. No medical card is needed. Make sure that you are compliant with the requirements for your tier, making note of any additional state or employer exceptions.

CARGO THEFT. In the third quarter of 2012, FreightWatch recorded a total of 225 cargo thefts in the United States, with an average loss per incident of $172,403 – a 23% increase from the previous three months of

the year. Food/Drinks was the product type most often stolen in the third quarter, with 35 thefts, or 16% of all thefts in the quarter. Products targeted in this category included soft drinks, coffee and various meats and produce. The Electronics category saw 30 thefts (13%), mainly of computers, TVs and cell phones, and there were 26 thefts (12%) in the Auto/Parts category, which included items like tires, motor oil and batteries. Despite the increase in overall cargo thefts in the third quarter, most product types saw a decrease in the volume of thefts from the second quarter of 2012. The Food/Drinks, Miscellaneous and Home/Garden types of cargo are the exceptions, as thefts in those categories increased for the quarter. From July 2012 to September 2012, California saw the most thefts. The 45 incidents of cargo theft in that state accounted for 20% of all incidents of cargo theft across the country. Florida, another hot spot for cargo theft, experienced 37 thefts (16%) and Texas had 30 (13%), making them the second and third most popular states in the US for cargo theft in the third quarter of 2012. Unsecured parking was the location targeted most often by cargo thieves when a location was recorded. With that in mind, I always recommend fi nding a secure place to park your trailer. Sangar Cargo Security is a specialized transportation security company that provides a safe haven for motor carriers to store loaded and unloaded assets in a highly-protected environment. The company offers high-security drop yards, customized security consulting, and long-term equipment storage. They have locations in AR, CA, FL, GA, IN, MS, NJ, PA, TN and TX. They can be found online (www.sangarcargosecurity.com) or reached by phone at (800) 216-4152. Be sure to tell them you read about them in 10-4 Magazine! Now, more than ever, it is crucial to protect your valuable cargo.

Clint’s Creations Page 61

Do heads turn when you drive by? Well, they will if you drive this rig! This month’s cool “creation” was built for the folks at RoadWorks Manufacturing in Lafayette, Indiana. Every year, for the past six years, Clint has ordered and built the official show truck for RoadWorks. Then, after touring the country, attending shows and other events throughout the year, the truck is returned to the dealership and sold so another one can be ordered and built for the next year. The truck seen here is RoadWorks’ 2012 show truck and it is now for sale at Kansas City Peterbilt. This is an amazing opportunity to purchase a (basically) brand new truck, outfitted with a custom paint job and tons of RoadWorks accessories, at a reasonable price. This thing has never even been hooked to a trailer and has less than 16,000 miles on the odometer! The rig is a custom-ordered 2012 Peterbilt 388 car-hauler with a 63-inch flattop. Powered by an ISX 600 Cummins hooked to an 18-speed transmission, the truck sits on a Low Low-Air suspension, 22.5 Dura-Bright aluminum wheels

all around, and has a Platinum interior package. Ordered in a beautiful maroon metallic color, after it arrived, Rick in the body shop added some cream and mocha accents, along with painting the grill surround, and then the other guys out in the shop fitted it with a set of Fibertech full rear fenders and front fenders. They also painted the fuel tanks, installed Lincoln Chrome dummy pipes, and two beautiful matching Legacy LO seats from Seats Inc. Once that initial stuff was completed, the truck went home to RoadWorks where they equipped it with all of their latest and greatest accessories. This truck has it all! RoadWorks prides themselves in making the best “lingerie” for trucks - you know, the kind of stuff that gets your heart racing! Started in 1994 with just three employees and a good idea, RoadWorks now offers a large and diverse catalog of aftermarket goodies for semi-trucks, as well as one-of-a-kind special order items upon request, and has become a leading manufacturer of cool accessories for trucks. In June of 2006, they moved into their current manufacturing

facility in Lafayette, Indiana. To see everything they offer, visit www.roadworksmfg.com or find them on Facebook and/or YouTube. If you are interested in this sweet ride and want to take the show on the road, go see it at Kansas City Peterbilt or give Clint (or your sales rep) a call at (800) 489-1122 to find out more information and pricing. Trust us when we say, for how much was spent on this truck and for how little it has been used, it is priced to sell – and a great opportunity just waiting to be had. So, give them a call or go see the truck in person – we guarantee it will turn your head!

The Insurance Review Page 65

NON-OWNED TRAILERSBY ROLAND L. ENZ - PRESIDENT, CALIFORNIA PLUS INSURANCE SERVICE

I hope that we have closed the recession gap and that 2013 treats us better than the past fi ve years. I have been in the truck insurance business for more than thirty years and have gone through several downturns in the economy, but nothing like the past fi ve years. Our government functions like a dysfunctional family with children addicted to debt – and the debt continues to grow by the second. Each and every taxpayer in the country now owes over $140,000 as their proportional share of the debt. With that said, let’s hope things get better and look toward the future with optimism. Now, let’s discuss some insurance issues.

A large portion of the trucking industry today is made up of owner operators that only own tractors, pulling someone else’s trailer. The following information is geared toward those that pull these trailers, as well as those of you that have your trailers pulled by someone other than yourself. If you own a tractor, the insurance industry considers this an “incomplete” unit without a semi-trailer attached. Your insurance policy will include that trailer as an Unspecifi ed Trailer, a Non-Owned or Unidentifi ed Trailer. This does not cover any owned trailers. Some coverages will be picked up on the non-owned trailer through a Trailer Interchange Agreement, if purchased. Many companies do not provide this coverage so, if it is needed, it will have to be purchased through a separate policy (we’ll look at this later).

Before we get started, law suits in this country are adjudicated by decisions from previous legal actions. One of the more prevalent decisions, covering trailer liability, owned by someone other than the owner of the power unit, is the decision in Travelers vs. Travelers. Basically, this decision assesses liability equally to both the power unit and the trailer. If you are the owner of any trailers, being pulled by someone else, you are liable for your proportion of the suit. With this in mind, always have yourself named as an Additional Insured. This will insure your representation and indemnifi cation in the event of a law suit brought against you through the power unit.

For most of you, your insurance coverage consists of Liability, Physical Damage and Cargo. Each one of these coverages affect the trailers that you are pulling and that you do not own. Liability is that part of the policy that provides insurance coverage to a third party that you are legally responsible to pay. This coverage will indemnify you from law suits brought about by a third party. Liability exists for the non-owned trailer only when it is attached to the power unit. Think about that. If you detach the trailer, no coverage exists. I cannot emphasize this fact enough. But Liability is only one leg of the insurance stool – Physical Damage and Cargo make up the others.

The majority of owner operators that pull someone else’s trailers are required to cover the Physical Damage of those trailers through their agreement by the company that has provided them with the trailer. Non-Owned Physical Damage picks up that coverage. Like the Liability,

in most cases, coverage only exists when the trailer is attached to the power unit. Any loss, while the trailer is detached, will not be covered. Let’s get back to Trailer Interchange for a moment. If you need this coverage, it has to be purchased as a separate coverage. Your insurance company that is writing the package for you may or may not provide this coverage. For the most part, those companies that require it will stipulate it in their contract with you. If you have purchased Trailer Interchange, it will be indicated on the Certifi cate of Insurance that is provided to the Certifi cate Holder. This part of the insurance policy,

if purchased, will provide coverage for any trailer that is in your care, custody and control – whether attached or not to your power unit.

There are two parts to Trailer Interchange coverage: 1) Liability; and 2) Physical Damage. Both parts must be purchased. The premium is based on the number of trailers you have in your possession, the number of days that you have those trailers in your possession, and the values of those trailers. Broader coverage is provided through the Trailer Interchange part of the policy, if purchased.

The most confusing and potentially the most costly of any loss stems from an unpaid Cargo claim. In order to understand the policy, you should take the time to read the exclusions and conditions of the coverage. I know I am beginning to sound like a broken record, but understanding your policy is critical. An unpaid cargo claim can be disastrous (it can put you out of business). Cargo coverage, for the most part, provided to the owner-operator, is written as a coverage that follows the tractor. Just like the coverages outlined before, coverage does not exist if the trailer is detached from the tractor.

Insurance policies are individual and unique to the companies that are providing the coverage. Take the time and have your insurance agent explain what you have purchased so you have a complete and accurate understanding of your policy. By doing so, you will increase your chances of making 2013 a truly Happy New Year! If you have any questions or comments, I can be contacted through California Plus Insurance Service, Inc. in Modesto, CA at 1-800-699-7101.

Trucker Talk Page 72

BY WRITER & DRIVER KIM GRIMM

Kevin Young has always had a deep passion for trucks, but it took him a while to turn that passion into his profession. Over the years he has washed them, photographed them, collected them, and now, fi nally living his dream, he actually drives them. Growing up on Long Island (New York), Kevin still has a little bit of his east coast accent, even though he moved away from there years ago. Living in Minnesota now, people are always asking him, “You’re not from around here, are you?” Kevin’s love for trucks and the trucking business started one day when he was about 23 years old. That day, he went out to help his Uncle Paul Blanda, who owned a mobile truck wash service in Long Island – and that day changed everything. There was no way Kevin could have ever known that the day his uncle called him, to go work with him washing trucks, how much it would change his life. He began by washing a muddy bulldozer (not so fun), but when it came time to wash the trucks, the love started – and now goes on. Kevin learned a lot from his uncle and eventually started his own mobile truck washing company out on Long Island. From there, the love grew even stronger!

Having taken some photography classes in high school, Kevin put what he had learned to good use, and started taking pictures of the trucks he washed, which he would then use as references to get more business. When people could see the kind of work that he did, it was a great selling point. The picture-taking passion grew into taking pictures of more than just the trucks that he was washing – he started taking pictures of all the nice rides he happened to see. Eventually, this passion would take him to truck shows. I had the pleasure of meeting Kevin at the Waupun Truckers Jamboree one year. Let me just say, that was a lot of years ago, but I can still remember how enthusiastic he was about all of the trucks – he even knew all of the drivers’ names, as well as a lot of details about their trucks. Using his vacation time to go to truck shows, Kevin would take pictures, meet drivers, and just enjoy all the hard work that had gone into making the trucks he loved so beautiful. Making the long drive to Louisville, KY for the annual show held there in March was worth the day or two he could spend there, but the weather wasn’t always the best. Anyone who has gone to the

Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) in March knows that it’s always a crap shoot as to what kind of weather you are going to get – winter or spring – you just never know. In 1997, Kevin sold his mobile washing business to his cousin and moved to Las Vegas, NV to work as a manager at the Blue Beacon Truck Wash there. You could hear the pride in Kevin’s voice when he told me about how he took that location from being rated 38th out of 42 stores to being #2 in just a short 6-month period. If it hadn’t been for developing asthma because of the chemicals that they were using, he was sure that his store would have been #1 very shortly. Drivers that stopped there regularly would make sure to pull into the bay that Kevin was working in. I know how that goes – I used to do the same thing at the Blue Beacon wash in Fernley, NV where I had a favorite guy that washed our truck. It might be the same place, but that does not always mean you will get the same level of service – it really makes a difference when the lead guy cares – and, obviously, that guy in Las Vegas was Kevin. One day, while in a hobby store, a new passion (collection) was born. Kevin’s fi rst 1/64th scale die-cast truck was a 379 Peterbilt Pepsi truck. Today, Kevin’s die-cast truck collection features

PASSION TO PROFESSION

over 700 beautifully-displayed models in his basement. I was so impressed when I saw the pictures. Housed in many neat, organized, wood cabinets with glass shelves and doors, it is apparent that a lot of thought and time (and love) went into the way his trucks are presented and stored. When I think of that many models sitting on shelves, I just think of them as places for dust to collect, but Kevin sees them entirely different, as a hobby, which is really cool. I think his enormous collection is stunning, and one day, many of those little rigs might well become collector’s items!

Kevin moved from Las Vegas, NV to Minnesota in 2005, and began managing a local casino nearby. But, in January of 2008, Kevin’s life really changed – his dream of getting his CDL was finally realized! He can still fondly remember that cold day, driving in the middle of a snow storm, to get his license. Apparently, it was an omen of things to come that winter. Listening to him tell the story about getting his CDL made me think of the day that I got my Chauffeurs License (that’s what they were called before they were CDL’s). It was in April, in Iowa, and I had the nicest man giving me the test. To be quite honest, it took me all three times I was allowed to back up correctly. I thought I was going to have to go back for a second try, but when I finished, I got my license. It’s funny the days that you remember in this business. Driving primarily in the upper Northwest, Kevin got his feet wet real fast! What a way to learn to drive – in Minnesota during the winter!! Today, Kevin works for US Foods driving local so that he can be home with his son, Alex, and daughter, Angelina.

For a while, he was doing overnight runs, but Alex didn’t like that so he changed his schedule so he could be home every day. No matter what truck Kevin is assigned, he takes care of it like it’s his own. It doesn’t matter that it’s a company truck – he is proud of it and it shows. I have always had a lot of respect for the company drivers that take good care of their trucks, even though they aren’t technically “theirs” and they don’t own them. I can remember back in the day when I drove company trucks – I always took care of it as if it were my own. People at a company notice when you take good care of their equipment.

Kevin’s son Alex gets very excited when he gets to go to the yard where his daddy works. He likes looking through

all the truck pictures that his dad has taken, too. It’s here where I can picture this little boy sitting on his dad’s lap, flipping through picture albums, and seeing his face light up when he sees his favorites, not to mention his little girl, squealing with delight when daddy gets home from work. It’s really tough to be a trucker and a dad or a mom. I wish more people would appreciate what drivers sacrifice to do the jobs that we do to make sure that people are able to buy the things they need and want on a daily basis. It’s really hard to be on the road with little ones at home. I know that I am preaching to the choir, but “thank you” to all of the men and women out on the road making a living with little ones back at home. I have written about it before, but I’ll say it again – this is the hardest part of trucking.

What started out as just a simple day, washing trucks with his uncle, spurned not only into a passion, but, eventually, a profession. And if you can honestly say that you love what you do, they say that you’ll never “work” a day in your life. If that is true, Kevin Young must be on a permanent vacation, because he loves what he does. Whether it be photographing trucks, collecting toy trucks, or driving the real thing, Kevin is living his dream every day, and his passion for his profession shows.

LARGER THAN LIFE

I remember watching when you’d left,And how I’d always start to cry.I remember pulling on your arm,And mom was kissing you goodbye.

Memories are crashing through my mind,Of times we had and things we’ve done.As a fl ood of mixed emotions,Bear down upon me, one by one.

I can feel you lifting me,Tossing me high above your head. And it’s too late to ask you to,Repeat the words of wisdom that you said.

I can hear the semi as it pulled,Into the driveway late at night. And I can hear you shifting gears,As you pulled away and faded out of sight.

I can hear you singing,In the white noise of the C.B. radio. And I can see you through my tears,Each time you said its time for you to go.

By Trevor Hardwick

For those of you who don’t know me, my rst name is Trevor. My middle name is Michael, named after my dad. I’m the 3rd of dad’s six kids - Jamie, Heather, Trevor (me), Breanne, Ryan and Veronica. My dad is hard to describe. Physically imposing in stature, his size was clearly the rst thing people noticed, but inside was a tender heart and a free spirit whose thirst for adventure was virtually insatiable. Dad seemed fearless. He did nothing gingerly. He was a full-speed-ahead kind of man, who lived by a “go big, or go home” mindset. He grew up in a severely broken home, the oldest of seven kids. But with very little positive in uence in his youth, he still managed to be the best dad anyone could hope for. When we were little, dad was gone a lot on the road, driving trucks long haul (a trade in uenced by his dad, and passed along to his brothers, a couple of his kids, and even my sweet little mom). I don’t recall feeling like we missed out on time with dad, as compared to other kids my age. The quality time together was what counted. And to me, personally, riding with dad in the truck was the best thing on Earth – I just couldn’t get enough! When dad would leave on another trip, I’d cry. I always wanted to go. Whenever he returned, we would climb all over him in excitement to see him. I liked to go out and play in his trucks, and search for the latest accessory he may have added since I last saw the truck. Several times in my school years, dad would bring the truck to the school for “show and tell” and let all my classmates see the truck, inside and out. He’d also tell the kids of all the places that he’d been and, sometimes, taken us kids. My dad was larger than life, not only to me, but to my peers, as well. Not only could my dad beat up your dad, but my friends would boast that Trevor’s dad could beat up other dads, too. I hated it when dad had to leave. The sight and sound of the truck rolling away was heartbreaking. When I was little, I remember clinging to him, or tugging his arm in an e ort to delay his departure. I loved him being a trucker, but I hated when he had to leave. He gave scratchy kisses to us kids, and then mom would kiss him goodbye, then send him on his way. My dad passed away on December 10, 2012. I wrote the following piece in hopes of capturing my raw, random thoughts, while they were ying through my mind like little windows passing at a rapid pace, each with their own view. My dad blessed me with a vivid and creative imagination, which was nurtured by my mom, and is now invaluable to me. I hope to remind people of his best traits when they see me. To be the spirit and image of my dad has been my desire all my life. I miss my dad.

Sometimes when I walk up to my truck,And then I open up the door.I can smell vanillaroma and armorall,And I think of you some more.

I can even feel your massive hands,The way you lifted me inside.I was always so excited,Just to be the one to get to ride.

I recall, I studied how you stood,And how you talked and how you dressed.I always tried to emulate you, dad,Because, I simply, was so impressed.

Sometimes when I hear the crackle,Of a Harley on the open road.I think of all the places you have been,And all the stories that you told.

I can see the tattoo’s on your arms,Your handlebars and your grips.I can see your hair out in the wind,And that big grin upon your lips.

Dad, I know you’re with me,As I’m looking in the mirror. And when I speak and someone says,They swore that it was you they hear.

You were like an eagle fl ying free,And somehow longing to belong. But you were mine, and you were all,My brothers’ my sisters’ and moms’.

I can see your legacy it’s carved,Into your grandkids’ very souls. And I can hear your heartbeat,In the thumping as my 18-wheeler rolls.

Someday I will see you,At a truck stop late at night. And I’ll be thinking ‘bout you,When I see polished chrome and lights.

I miss you dad, but I hope you know,I will see you once again.Forgive me if these memories fade,To black and white as time creeps in.

I know where to fi nd you,Anytime I take a look around.I see you in my own refl ection,I hear you in a lonesome diesel sound.

I remember watching as you left,And how unguardedly I cried.I remember pulling on your arm,And mom was kissing you goodbye.
