The weekly offertory is what the parish depends upon to cover most of its weekly operating expenses: staff salaries, supplies, utility bills, etc. Offertory includes money from weekly envelopes and loose checks from registered parishioners.

FIFTH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME Today’s readings recount three theophanies, or particular manifestations of God’s presence. The prophet Isaiah is caught up in a dramatic scene of heavenly worship, with a royal throne, burning embers, and seraphim singing, “Holy, holy, holy.” Isaiah is overwhelmed. In the responsorial psalm, the assembly adds its own worship to that of the seraphim: “In the sight of the angels, I will sing your praises, Lord” (Psalm 138:1). Paul reminds the Corinthians of his own experience of a post-Resurrection appearance of the Lord, making him an apostle, but one “born abnormally” (1 Corinthians 15:8), since he had no acquaintance with the earthly Jesus. The first of those who did know the earthly Jesus were surprised by fishing advice from the teacher who had commandeered Simon’s boat, resulting in an extraordinary catch. Although less colorful than those of Isaiah or Paul, this theophany was just as overwhelming.

St. Paul really tells it like it is. It seems some of the Corinthians did not believe that Christ rose from the dead, or that resurrection was a spiritual symbol of forgiveness of sins. So Paul lists those witnesses who actually saw the risen Jesus, last and least of these being Paul himself. Now we are used to thinking of Paul as one of the greatest apostles, even though we know he once persecuted Christians. So you might think he is being overly humble, like someone fishing for a compliment. No, Paul is only interested in making sure the Corinthians understand just how much God has done.

Besides being “born abnormally” (1 Corinthians 15:8), that is, coming to follow Christ in such an unusual way, he felt unworthy because of so many Christians he hurt before his conversion. Yet he turns that unworthiness into an example of how much God has done through him, so he can say that he worked harder than any other apostles because of God’s grace, not Paul’s strength. The same grace that turned a former enemy into a friend also gave him the strength to spread the gospel farther than anyone else at that time.

In today’s Gospel, Peter has a similar experience. He was a fisherman who knew his business and knew that some days, the fish just aren’t there. So when Jesus tells him to go out one more time, try one more cast of the nets, Peter probably thought he’d show Jesus that it was no use. Then when they caught enough fish to fill both boats, he realized that his pride was sinful. He was unworthy to receive such bounty from the Lord. And yet Jesus tells him that “you will be catching men” (Luke 5:10).

How many of us are like Peter and Paul, thinking we know just what our place in the world is, relying on our own strengths to do our jobs? Surely that’s all God expects of us, right? They found Jesus calling them to a much more challenging life. Do we have the courage to listen to God’s call to serve?

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 10 FEBRUARY 2019

WHEN GOD APPEARS . . . Scripture recounts several instances of God calling persons to be leaders, prophets, apostles, or for other tasks. In most of them, a divine messenger appears to someone and directs them to do X. However, in today’s readings, there is no explicit directive for Isaiah to deliver God’s message, or for the fishermen to follow Jesus. Instead, the accounts focus on the way that God appears. The respective calls result from the recognition of God’s presence in the experience. That recognition creates an openness to whatever God might want.

. . . OUR RESPONSE IS WHAT MATTERS Isaiah’s immediate reaction to the marvelous events he has seen was an acute awareness of his own sinfulness: “Woe is me . . . For I am a man of unclean lips” (Isaiah 6:5). In the ancient world, contact between holy objects or environments and profane things or persons was a contamination—human beings were thought to “contaminate” any place where God’s presence was known to dwell, and hence were unclean. Only after he volunteers (“Here I am… send me!” [Isaiah 6:8]) does Isaiah learn what he is being asked to do. The catch of fish in Luke lacks the color of Isaiah’s theophany, but it evoked a response from Simon similar to that of Isaiah: “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). He was not alone; “all those with him” were “seized” with astonishment (5:9). The overwhelming catch of fish was just as much an overwhelming experience of God for Simon as were the seraphim for the prophet Isaiah. This is very good news for the rest of us, since our own theophanies are almost never as colorful as Isaiah’s, or as dramatic as an unusually large catch of fish. But they are there, moments in our lives when we become acutely aware of God’s presence and understand more clearly our own humanity and our need for God’s mercy. That understanding, in turn, can make us open to how God is calling us and to what we are being called to do.

DO YOU HAVE OLD PALM BRANCHES FROM LAST YEAR’S PALM SUNDAY SERVICES? On Ash Wednesday each of us will be visibly Catholic; marked by an ashen cross on the forehead. This symbol is not only a sign of public penance, but also our link to Palm Sunday of last year. All are invited to return the palm received last year. It will be burnt and the resulting ash used to sign the faithful at the beginning of Lent. Baskets for palm branches will be place in the entrance of the Churches beginning February 17th. EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF

HOLY COMMUNION There is a need for Eucharistic Ministers

at both parishes for all of the Masses.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist the priests at all weekday and weekend Masses and on Holy Days. Outside of Mass, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion may also assist in the distribution of the Eucharist to those who are homebound or in local nursing homes and hospitals. Necessary qualifications for Eucharistic Ministers are: be a practicing Catholic having received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist and if married, the marriage must be a valid Catholic marriage. Those interested in this wonderful Ministry should contact Carol or Joan at the Parish Office.

DIOCESE LAUNCHES INDEPENDENT SURVIVORS COMPENSATION PROGRAM

The Diocese of Scranton on January 22 launched its Independent Survivors Compensation Program, an independent program designed to compensate survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Participation in the Program by survivors is entirely voluntary and the Program is run completely independent of the Diocese. The Diocese's program includes all victims, whether the abuser was a priest from the Diocese of Scranton, from a religious order, or was a lay employee of the Diocese. Program administrators, Kenneth Feinberg and Camille Biros will reach out directly to those who have previously reported a claim of abuse to the Diocese of Scranton. Survivors who have not yet reported past abuse are also eligible to participate and can request a claim form online after reporting the abuse in writing to the District Attorney's Office. Administrators will process claims in the order in which they are received, and payments will be made on a rolling basis as claims are processed. An Independent Oversight Committee comprised of three individuals with relevant experience across healthcare, law enforcement and social work will supervise the Program. The Oversight Committee will oversee and periodically review the implementation and administration of the Program. The Committee will also report to the Diocese as to the implementation and administration of the Program. Parish and school assets, as well as contributions and bequests from parishioners and donations to the Diocesan Annual Appeal will not be used to fund the program. Rather, the Program will be funded by existing Diocesan assets and available reserves. If necessary, the Diocese will sell assets and borrow money. This Program is one of the many steps the Diocese has taken to assist survivors of abuse. Survivors can continue to receive assistance from the Diocese including counseling or spiritual direction and referrals to support groups. The Diocese strictly adheres to a zero-tolerance policy and immediately notifies law enforcement, the District Attorney and child protective services when abuse is reported. When the allegation appears credible, the Diocese removes the priest from ministry pending an investigation. The Diocese fully cooperates with law enforcement for any necessary investigation. It is the policy of the Diocese of Scranton to report any allegation of sexual abuse of a minor to law enforcement. If you are a victim of sexual abuse committed by a priest, deacon, religious or lay employee or volunteer of the Diocese of Scranton, you are encouraged to immediately report the matter to law enforcement. If any priest, deacon, religious, lay employee or volunteer of the Diocese of Scranton has cause or reason to suspect that a minor has been subjected to any form of abuse, including child sexual abuse, the matter will be reported to law enforcement. In accordance with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Child Protective Services Laws, reports of suspected child abuse should also be made immediately by phone to the 24-HourChild Abuse hotline (ChildLine) at 1-800-932-0313 or electronically at www.compass.state.pa.us/cwis It is also the policy of the Diocese to adhere to all civil and state regulations. To this end, the Diocese is equally committed to adhering to the norms of the Code of Canon Law and to upholding the tenets of the USCCB Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, which includes supporting victims of sexual abuse in their pursuit of emotional and spiritual well-being. As such, information regarding an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor should also be reported to the Victim Assistance Coordinator Mary Beth Pacuska at 570-862-7551 or to Diocesan officials, including the Vicar General, Monsignor Thomas M. Muldowney, V.G., at (570-207-2269).
