10 GAMES TO REVISE AND HAVE FUN

RUNNING DICTATIONDivide your students into groups. Display copies of the next texts on theclassroom walls. One learner in the group has to run to the correspondingtext and read it, try to memorise as much of it as possible and run back totheir partners and dictate it to them. Each group should have a writtenversion of the text; the running student may rotate as they wish. The firstgroup to finish with the fewest mistakes is the winner. Students can thenput the paragraphs of the story in the right order.

Running dictationTEXT 1At night, there were people sleeping everywhere. We could hardly move! My seven cousinsslept in our bedroom with my sister and me. Some adults slept in the living room andothers in my parentsroom. When somebody got up, everybody woke up, so they got up,too.TEXT 2What? You think this was a mess? No there were nine children and six adults, there wasno room for us to be comfortable and if it rained we all had to stay in and play boardgames or watch TV. Sometimes it was so noisy in the house that my ears hurt but it was all

worth it. It was the best summer ever.TEXT 3

In the mornings, my mother and my aunts prepared breakfast for all the children. It wasfantastic! We had milk, some toast with honey and butter and some home-made cookies orcakes.

TEXT 4It was summer of 2003 and I was only eight years old. My parents, my sister and I lived in asmall town and we had a big family living in the city. They were visiting us for the summerand we were so happy to see them that we couldnt wait for them to come. We organisedthe house but when they finally arrived, we realised that there wasnt enough room for

everybody!TEXT 5In the afternoons, my seven cousins, my sister and I played sports in the yard. My auntsand my mother drank some ice tea and gossiped until their mouths were dry. My fatherand uncles played cards and shouted at the top of their lungs. We had a fantastic time!

Tell them to write this message down andshow it to the next student following the same procedure. The process isrepeated until the last student reads the message aloud. There will be criesof astonishment! You may then discuss where and why the changeshappened.

    3) A GROWING LISTRead aloud one of the phrases below and have your students take turns to

repeat it and add no more than two words. If they cant remember all thewords, give them a point.
