Un secolo fa, Bologna (come altre città del nord) viveva un periodo di sviluppo economico e produttivo, basato specialmente sulla cultura della tecnica e della meccanica. Anche la scienza medica e quella farmaceutica erano nel patrimonio della città, che vanta la più antica università del mondo. A Bologna non mancavano farmacie famose e grandi Ospedali, i più importanti tra i quali erano l’ospedale Maggiore, l’ospedale Sant’Orsola, l’Istituto Rizzoli.Non meno sviluppata era la preparazione dei farmaci e dei presidi per la medicazione, con l’eccezione dei cerotti che venivano acquistati in Germania per lo più dall’azienda Beiersdorf.In questo contesto non mancava una valida industria farmaceutica, animata dalla ricerca e dall’inventiva di tecnici e liberi professionisti. Fra questi, ebbe modo di dimostrare ingegno ed iniziativa il giovane Dottore in Chimica Umberto Dotta, dopo una vita di lavoro e studio, iniziata a 14 anni presso l’azienda farmaceutica Bonavia Negri di Bologna.

A century ago, Bologna (like other cities in Northern Italy) was undergoing a period of economic and productive expansion, in particular in the technical and mechanical sectors. Also medical science and pharmacology were part of the patrimony of this city, which is home to the oldest university in the world. In Bologna there were plenty of famous pharmacies and great hospitals, the most important of which were Maggiore Hospital, Sant’Orsola Hospital, and Rizzoli Institute.No less developed was the preparation of medicines and medication devices, with the exception of surgical and wound dressings which were bought in Germany mainly from the company Beiersdorf. In this context, the pharmaceutical industry was thriving, pushed onward by the research and inventiveness of technicians and freelancers. Among these, a young chemist named Umberto Dotta had the chance to use his ingenuity and initiative after a lifetime of work and study which had begun at the age of 14 at the pharmaceutical company Bonavia Negri in Bologna.

Furono numerose le sue innovazioni e creazioni, fra cui un dispositivo di grande praticità per il riempimento delle fiale, che fu da lui denominato Apparecchio “Attod” che ebbe molto successo. Numerosi anche i suoi viaggi in Italia, Francia, Spagna e nelle coste del Mediterraneo, come rappresentante farmaceutico.

Nell’aprile del 1914, in una farmacia di Genova, Umberto Dotta sentì dire da un rappresentante di Beiersdorf: “fate presto a darmi un’ordinazione di cerotti, perché in Germania si parla già di chiudere l’esportazione dei preparati di caucciù”. Il Dott. Dotta si mise subito al lavoro. Montò uno studio in Via Tovaglie, e cominciò a fare esperimenti per rendere adesivo un nastro di tela spalmandovi sopra una mescola a base di caucciù e pasta salicilica. Riuscì a portare a buon fine i suoi esperimenti, ed iniziò a fabbricare il cerotto callifugo, di facile vendita, ed il cerotto bianco all’ossido di zinco, avvolto in rocchetti, che serviva per fissare le bende delle medicazioni.

Umberto Dotta diede ai suoi cerotti il nome Plastod, che sintetizzava il sostantivo tedesco Pflaster, cerotto, e Attod, il nome del suo apparecchio per riempire le fiale.Dopo mesi di prove, Umberto Dotta distribuì campioni dei suoi cerotti nelle principali farmacie ed all’Istituto Rizzoli, per testarli. Nella primavera del 1915 vide arrivare i primi ordini.

His innovations and creations were numerous, including a very practical device used to fill vials, which he called “Attod” appliance, that was very successful. He also took many trips around Italy and to France and Spain, and along the Mediterranean coast, as a pharmaceuticals salesman.

In April 1914, in a pharmacy in Genova, Umberto Dotta overheard a salesman of Beiersdorf say: “be quick about ordering dressings, because in Germany there is already talk of closing the exportation of rubber products”. Dr. Dotta began working immediately. He set up an office in Via Tovaglie, and began experiments to make a strip of cloth adhesive by spreading a mix of rubber and salicylic paste on it. He was successful with his experiments and began producing a corn plaster, easy to sell, and a white zinc oxide dressing, sold in spools, which was used to hold medicated gauzes in place.

Umberto Dotta named his bandages Plastod, which was the combination of the German noun Pflaster, dressing, and Attod, the name of his device for filling vials.After months of trials, Umberto Dotta distributed samples of his bandages in the main pharmacies and at Rizzoli Institute to test them. In the spring of 1915 he received his first orders.

Le intuizioni e le iniziative del fondatore dell’azienda Plastod si dimostrarono provvidenziali quando, con la guerra ‘15/18, le importazioni dalla Germania vennero effettivamente bloccate, ed ospedali, farmacie e l’esercito italiano videro calare la scorta di cerotti. Il Dott. Dotta fu contattato da un industria farmaceutica bolognese, l’azienda Fratelli Zabban, per far fronte ad importanti ordini dell’esercito italiano; fu così che le due ditte iniziarono un rapporto di collaborazione commerciale che si mantenne sotto diverse forme fino agli anni ’70.Nel giro di pochi mesi Umberto Dotta attrezzò un ampio laboratorio in via Guerrazzi, a Bologna, progettò e realizzò vari macchinari, ed avviò la produzione su scala industriale: chilometri e chilometri di cerotto, confezionato in rocchetti da cinque metri.

The intuition and initiative of the founder of Plastod proved to be quite opportune when, due to World War I, importation from Germany was totally blocked, and hospitals, pharmacies and the Italian military saw their supply of dressings drop dramatically. Dr. Dotta was contacted by a Bologna-based pharmaceutical industry, the company Fratelli Zabban, to meet the important orders coming in from the Italian army; thus began a commercial collaboration between these two companies which continued in various ways until the 1970s.In just a few months, Umberto Dotta outfitted a large laboratory in via Guerrazzi, in Bologna, where he designed and built various machines, and he began producing on an industrial scale: kilometers of bandages, packaged in five meter spools.

Dopo la fine della prima guerra mondiale, Plastod si trasferì da via Guerrazzi in via dell’Abbadia in locali presi in affitto dalla Fratelli Zabban dove poté avere l’uso del vapore, utilissimo per la lavorazione delle masse adesive e dove diede vita a una nuova famiglia di cerotti medicali. Ai prodotti Plastod già fabbricati si aggiunsero cerotti per dolori ai reni, alle articolazioni e ai muscoli lombari, cerotti ombelicali e post vaccinazioni, e la “fasciatura rapida Farmaplasto”, un cerotto corredato di una striscia di garza, da tagliare e da applicare direttamente sulla ferita.L’attività della Plastod proseguì, non senza gravi disagi, anche durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, superando miracolosamente i devastanti bombardamenti di Bologna.

With the end of World War I, Plastod moved from via Guerrazzi to via dell’Abbadia in buildings rented from Fratelli Zabban where it was possible to use steam, which was very useful for working with adhesives and where the company launched a new family of medical dressings.Along with the traditional Plastod products, bandages for kidney, joint and back pain were added, as well as umbilical and post-vaccination bandages, and the “Farmaplasto quick wrap”, a bandage equipped with a strip of gauze that could be cut and applied directly to a wound.The activity of Plastod continued, not without serious setbacks, also during World War II, miraculously surviving the devastating bombings in Bologna.

Nel 1951, la ditta individuale Plastod del Dottor Umberto Dotta modificò la propria forma giuridica in Plastod Srl, nella quale entrarono come soci la moglie, Maria Fontana, poi i figli, Lorenzo, Giorgio, Paolo, Angelo, Giovanni e Irene.Il primo figlio a entrare in azienda fu Giorgio nel 1951. Appassionato di meccanica, diede una nuova spinta alla produzione introducendo miglioramenti nelle tecniche: rigenerò l’intero processo di spalmatura modificando la spalmatrice ed il sistema di essicazione dello spalmato. Le esalazioni venivano filtrate e riportate allo stato di solvente liquido, con un recupero quasi totale.Il secondo figlio ad entrare in azienda fu Giovanni, che all’inizio degli anni 60’ affiancò Giorgio nell’organizzazione del lavoro e nello sviluppo commerciale. Con grande dolore di tutti, Giovanni è venuto a mancare nel Dicembre 2012 lasciando un grande vuoto ed un grande rimpianto.Agli anni ‘70 risale l’ingresso in azienda di Paolo, con funzioni tecnico-scientifiche, oggi responsabile della sicurezza sul lavoro.

Un altro fratello, l’Avv. Angelo, ha collaborato da libero professionista con la Plastod a partire dalla metà degli anni ’60 assistendola nelle pratiche e trattative più importanti.

In 1951, the single owner of Plastod Dr. Umberto Dotta changed its legal company type to Plastod Srl, with the new partners being his wife, Maria Fontana, and then his children, Lorenzo, Giorgio, Paolo, Angelo, Giovanni and Irene.The first child to become a part of the company was Giorgio in 1951. Passionate about mechanics, he gave a push to the production by introducing technical improvements: he regenerated the entire coating process by modifying the spreader and its drying system. The vapors were filtered and turned back into a liquid solvent, with an almost total recovery rate.The second child to become an active part of the company was Giovanni, who at the beginning of the 1960s worked alongside Giorgio to organize production and in commercial development. Sadly, Giovanni passed away in December 2012 leaving in his absence a great emptiness and sorrow.The debut of Paolo in the company dates back to the 1970s, in the technical scientific area, and today he is the occupational hazard director.

Another brother, the lawyer Angelo, has collaborated as a freelancer with Plastod since the mid-1960s, helping with the most important negotiations and documents.

Nel 1973 la Plastod si trasferì a Lippo di Calderara di Reno in un nuovo ed ampio stabilimento costruito per fare fronte alle proprie esigenze di sviluppo produttivo. Essendo stata fino ad allora in prevalenza un fornitore ospedaliero, Plastod si trovò a dover superare una situazione poco propizia alle sue ambizioni di crescita industriale, perché gli enti ospedalieri italiani erano sempre in gravissimo ritardo nel pagamento delle forniture.Plastod optò quindi per una conversione ad un altro mercato, costituito da una clientela di aziende farmaceutiche e sanitarie che trattavano cerotti e bende adesive ma che non avevano convenienza ad investimenti cospicui per fabbricarli in proprio.Il mercato del cerotto era allora per lo più dominato da multinazionali; aziende in grado di investire in ricerca e innovazione e commercializzare cerotti costantemente all’avanguardia, sia in ambito chirurgico/ospedaliero, sia per uso domestico.Numerose aziende italiane e straniere, per poter competere e rimanere sul mercato, si rivolsero quindi alla nuova

In 1973 Plastod moved to Lippo di Calderara di Reno in a new and bigger plant built to meet its production development needs. Having been up until this time mostly a hospital supplier, Plastod found itself having to overcome a rather unlucky situation in terms of industrial growth, because the Italian hospitals were always extremely late in paying for their supplies.Plastod thus opted to move into another market, made up of a clientele of pharmaceutical and sanitary companies that sold bandages and dressings but that were not inclined to invest in producing them themselves.The bandages market was at that time mostly dominated by big multinationals: companies capable of investing in research and innovation and of commercializing the latest in dressings, both in the surgery/hospital sector and for domestic use.Numerous Italian and foreign companies, in order to compete and remain on the market, turned to the new Plastod in Calderara di Reno as a reliable and technically versatile supplier, capable of developing any product requested. Un passo significativo in tal senso fu fatto per la fabbricazione delle piccole bende adesive pronte per l’uso –i c.d. “strips”– che erano ormai entrati nell’uso normale delle famiglie. Per rispondere all’aumento della domanda del mercato, Giorgio Dotta, con idee originali, progettò e realizzò per la loro produzione una macchina automatica a moto alternato. La macchina accoppiava la garza, perforava il cerottino, lo tagliava e lo incartava al ritmo di oltre 400 colpi al minuto. Le macchine a movimento alternato Plastod si rivelarono talmente innovative ed efficienti che ne vennero sviluppate e costruite anche per essere vendute in Germania e in America.

An important step in this direction was taken for the manufacturing of small, ready to use adhesive bandages - called “strips”- which by now had become a common household item. To meet the increasing demand of this market, Giorgio Dotta designed an automatic machine with alternate movement for the production of strips and built it entirely within his plant. The machine attached the gauze, perforated the the bandaid, cut it and packaged it at a rate of over 400 per minute. These Plastod alternate movement machines proved to be so innovative and efficient that they were developed and built to be sold in Germany and America.

Intanto lo sviluppo della chimica e della tecnologia aveva immesso sul mercato materiali nuovi che miglioravano la preparazione dei cerotti e delle bende adesive. Tradizionalmente la mescola adesiva veniva preparata partendo dal caucciù; ma con gli anni ’80 sono arrivati adesivi acrilici che non irritano la pelle e resistono meglio all’invecchiamento. Queste masse adesive possono essere spalmate a freddo mediante l’uso di solventi, o fuse e spalmate a caldo (c.d. ”Hot melt”).

Anche i materiali di supporto sono cambiati; la tradizionale tela in madapolam per i rocchetti è stata quasi del tutto sostituita dai tessuti non tessuti; schiume e altri materiali speciali per medicazioni avanzate hanno sostituito il PVC ed altre plastiche, rendendo anche superflue in molti casi le compresse di garza per le ferite.Per adeguarsi all’evoluzione della tecnica, i soci della Plastod diedero vita nel 1978 alla Meccanica Aldina SRL, una officina specializzata, oggi con sedi a Bologna e Milano (quest’ultima a guida Pozzan); la Meccanica Aldina ha progettato e costruito gran parte delle nuove macchine occorrenti alla Plastod, assicurandone costantemente il miglioramento oltre che la manutenzione.La capacità di adattare rapidamente alle richieste dei clienti, anche le più innovative, gli strumenti di produzione, è via via diventato un vero e proprio punto di forza per la Plastod.

In the meantime, the progress in chemistry and in technology had produced new materials for the market that improved the preparation of bandages and adhesive dressings. Traditionally, the adhesive mix was made starting with rubber, but in the 1980s new acrylic adhesives that did not irritate the skin and that were more resistant to aging arrived. These adhesive masses could be coated cold using solvents, or melted and spread hot (hot melt).

Also the supporting materials had changed. The traditional madapolam cloth for spools was almost completely substituted by synthetics; foams and other special materials for advanced medications substituted PVC and other plastics, making, in many cases, gauze rather superfluous for wounds.To adapt to the technical evolutions, the partners of Plastod created, in 1978, Meccanica Aldina SRL, a specialized machine works, today with offices in Bologna and Milan (the latter is led by Pozzan); Meccanica Aldina designed and built most of the new machines needed by Plastod, thus ensuring both constant improvement and maintenance.Plastod’s strength is in fact in its ability to rapidly adapt its manufacturing chain to a client’s needs, even the most innovative, as it can create or modify its production methods.

Anche la tipologia dei prodotti Plastod ha registrato un’evoluzione degna di nota. La produzione degli strips, di grande rilievo fin dagli anni 70/80 si è arricchita di un articolo fabbricato per primo tra le aziende del settore dalla Plastod, il c.d. “Zip-Strip.”

In the field of sterile adhesive dressings for hospital use, which over the last thirty years has taken on a dominant role in post-operational medication, Plastod has been one of the main players on the European market since the mid-90s, in particular as a supplier for the big multinationals. In order to become such, it was

Per rendere ancora più efficiente e veloce la produzione, a partire dalla fine degli anni ’80 sono state progettate e costruite macchine a ciclo continuo o rotative, nelle quali tutte le operazioni si susseguono l’una all’altra senza soluzione di continuità.Queste macchine, molto veloci, dotate di un originale perforatore rotativo hanno consentito produzioni a migliaia al minuto di strips perforati con asportazione del truciolo: cosa che non risulta sia mai riuscita ad alcuna altra azienda del settore.

To make their production even more efficient and fast, starting at the end of the 1980s, continuous or rotational cycle machines were designed and built in which all operations are carried out one after the other without any downtime. These machines, which are very fast, have an original rotating perforator that allows for the production of thousands of perforated strips per minute with the removal of the cutouts, something that, as far as we know, no other company in this sector has been able to do.

Plastod si è anche impegnata nella produzione di un articolo che via via ha sostituito in gran parte l’uso dei cerotti in rocchetto, cioè i rotoli di non-woven protetto da carta siliconata che si usano ritagliandone i pezzi occorrenti (c.d.”Rolls”); questo prodotto di Plastod assorbe milioni di m2 di spalmato ed è destinato in gran parte all’estero.Nell’ultimo decennio Plastod ha sviluppato con successo anche la produzione dei moderni bendaggi noti come “medicazioni avanzate”, che stanno assumendo un ruolo sempre più importante nel settore sanitario.

Plastod also focused on the production of an item that slowly substituted the use of spools of bandages almost completely: rolls of non-woven material protected by silicon paper that are used by cutting the pieces that you need (Rolls). This product made by Plastod uses millions of square meters of adhesive spread every year and is mostly sold abroad.In the last decade, Plastod has successfully developed also the production of modern dressings known as “advanced medications”, which are becoming increasingly more important in the medical field.

With an extremely fast machine taken from the production of adhesive tapes, Plastod has also been able to stay competitive in the sector of traditional spools.The introduction of the CE mark in 1993 helped Plastod export; the regulation in the EEC of medical devices has allowed companies to produce, without bureaucratic complications, for all the nations in the European Community.

Oggi, a 100 anni dal primo cerotto sperimentale nato dall’intraprendenza del suo giovane fondatore, la Plastod è arrivata alla terza generazione dei Dotta, con l’entrata in azienda come dirigenti di Francesco ed Umberto e con la collaborazione a titoli diversi di Maria, Giovanni, Giuliana e Lorenzo.Lo stabilimento Plastod di Calderara di Reno copre una superficie di oltre 5000 metri quadrati, all’interno della quale si svolge l’intero ciclo produttivo. Occupa un centinaio di dipendenti, di cui il 75% è operativo nella produzione.Annualmente produce svariate centinaia di milioni di bende adesive sterili e di altri cerotti di vari formati identificabili con circa 1000 codici, distribuiti in gran parte sui marchi dei diversi committenti. Il fatturato annuo di circa diciotto milioni di euro è realizzato per piu’dell’80% con vendite all’estero.Oggi la Plastod si misura con il mercato globale impegnandosi in una continua ricerca di qualità, ottimizzando i tempi produttivi mediante l’evoluzione tecnica e l’orientamento all’efficienza nel rispetto delle norme di produzione italiane ed europee.
