Bead making has been a thriving industry in West Africa since the sixteenth century and the Krobo area of Ghana is known as one of the beadmaking hubs. The handcrafting of beads using clay molds and ovens has changed little over the centuries as the family craft is passed down through the generations. The natural fiber of allo comes from the bark of the giant nettlefound in the high mountain regions of Nepal. The following pages show examples of each style, listed above. As you will notice in the photos, variations in sizing (the dimensions we quote are for the average, often are larger) and colour (as compared to style photos in the catalogue, i.e.: orange in place of yellow, burgundy instead of red) do occur. Each basket is a work of art, and we have yet to see a basket that isn’t beauti-ful in its own way. Please note: all baskets come with an undyed (natural) goat leather handle, excePt mini baskets

To save on volume/shipping costs, the baskets are shipped from Ghana “squished” or com-pressed to about 1/3 of their original size. To re-shape the baskets, simply get them wet. The best way is to dunk in a utility sink or tub for about 20 seconds, or spray in the shower or with a hose (water will not damage the baskets in any way), and then form into shape by hand (gloves recommended). They will dry overnight and hold their new shape.•••note: the mini baskets and the catch-all bowl need little if any re-shaPing.Should you not have the facilities, or do not want the hassle, we can re-form your baskets for you ($2 charge per basket), however, keep in mind the shipping costs will be higher due to volume. Market Access ProgramThe livelihoods of the poor often depend on selling the product of their labor, and inequality of access to markets is often a factor causing poverty. The market access program therefore aims at developing the business and organization capacities of groups of small-scale producers to access both local and international market on beneficial terms. Our emphasis is fair trade because it holds the answer to our poverty reduction efforts.

Business Development ProgramTRADE AID is dedicated to providing leadership in fostering the growth and development of small businesses. This is because our conviction in the power of the entrepreneur in creating worth. The goal of the Business Development Program is to assist start-ups and strengthen exist-ing business entities through high quality, low cost counseling, and high quality, affordable training programs. Livestock Enterprise Project:Here poor productive persons either in groups or as individuals are assisted to put up livestock enterprises. The focus is on women. Project was startedwithfundingfromOXFAMGB.

Farmers Inputs supply Scheme:Initial funded by Oxfam GB. The project supply farmers with inputs such as donkeys and carts, Bullocks and Plough etc.

Bolgatanga Basket Weavers Fair Trade Programme:This programme has three main components namely; gift of hope which aims at selling straw baskets of women groups, Capacity building in the area of skills improvement and provision of craft centres for weavers groups. The programme has been running since the inception of TradeAID.Capacity building is another important component of this programme. TradeAID is engaged in a couple of capacity building programmes with baskets.

Sustainable Credit for Business:This is basically a micro credit programme which aims at supporting entrepreneurs and business association with credit. The programme has fourmainproductlinesnamely;BusinessBooster,SmartCredit,GroupsLoansandSpecialLoans.
