THOUSAND HILLS VISITOR’S GUIDE2
Welcome
When you look at the rolling, green hills and the tranquil valleys of the Valley of 1000 Hills, it is hard to imagine the bloody battles that
the great Zulu warrior King Shaka fought there, soon after his coronation in 1816. Today we are still fighting battles in our country against poverty, underdevelopment, joblessness, illiteracy and a host of other social ills. That is why the development of the Valley is of such great importance to the eThekwini Council.
Tourism – and all its spin-offs – is one of our main industries, and for the poor who
live in the Valley, the development and growth of the many exciting initiatives and
projects are literally a matter of life and death.
We know that our people remain confident that we will honour our commitment
to continue to work diligently to improve their standard of living and quality of life, but
we need the assurance and cooperation of each and every one of you to help us to link
up investors and partners.
Sustainable growth and development can benefit all, so let us make the 1000 Hills
Experience unforgettable.

5THOUSAND HILLS VISITOR’S GUIDE
The Valley of 1000 Hills is named for the many hills which tumble down to the
banks of the Umgeni River, flowing from the distant Drakensberg Mountains
to the Indian Ocean. The area combines the laid back ease of luxurious
country living with an ancient, indigenous culture on its doorstep. The valley
has been home to the Zulu people for centuries, and many of them continue
to practice and live out their unique traditional lifestyle.
The Valley of 1000 Hills is KwaZulu-Natal’s doorway, situated an easy
distance from the beautiful beaches and, going inland, the KwaZulu-Natal
Midlands. On the crest of the hills overlooking the valley are the leafy suburbs
and village centres which enjoy fantastic views and a year-round holiday
climate with warm summers and cool winters.
These villages offer all the creature comforts one would expect from a
holiday destination, including spas, B&Bs, fine dining, sophisticated shopping
centres, outdoor adventure and local arts and crafts unique to the area. If
you’re looking for a break from the fast pace of everyday life or the exhilaration
of the outdoors, the Valley of 1000 Hills is the place for you.
We trust that you will enjoy your stay and come back again and again.

History and CultureTHOUSAND HILLS VISITOR’S GUIDE6
The Valley of 1000 Hills is a place where the past and the present
intersect. From the establishment of European settlers to the vibrant
Zulu culture which gives the area its distinctive identity, the Valley of
1000 Hills has a rich heritage.
When Europeans arrived at the Port of Natal in 1825, the Valley of 1000
Hills was a remote and isolated area teeming with game. WS Field was one of
the first Europeans to settle in 1851 and leopards were said to occasionally
spend the night on the veranda of the Field homestead in what is now Kloof.
Within a few years a wagon route opened up between Durban and the
interior, close to what is now the Old Main Road. The establishment of the
railway line linking the goldfields with the port rapidly followed the discovery
of gold in the Transvaal in the 1880s, and the rail and road traffic through the
1000 Hills increased.5The well-known Maytime stores in the 1950s

Organised tours take visitors deep
into tribal lands. You can watch Zulu
ceremonies being performed and
witness traditional diviners throwing
the bones and communicating
with the spirits at pheZulu Safari
Park. PheZulu offers traditional
Zulu dancing and cultural shows,
as well as game drives, local curios,
wonderful views across the valley
and a crocodile and snake park.
For those people with adventurous taste buds, pheZulu’s Croctilians
Restaurant offers crocodile steaks for a unique taste sensation.

The local Zulu people, many of whom live in the traditional way in the
Umgeni and Shongweni Valleys, give the area a unique spirit and identity.
Their colourful ceremonies and culture give an interesting and enjoyable
insight into the lifestyles of this proud culture.
Botha’s Hill is home to many crafters working in mediums like wood, glass
beads, fabric, wax, metal and clay. Many of these crafters are situated along
the 1000 Hills route and have opened their studios and galleries to visitors
who are keen to see how the products on sale in the area are made. The area’s
beauty and traditions have inspired many innovative and interesting styles
of art and crafts, and it is guaranteed that the intricate, handmade works are
unlike those you’ll see anywhere else.
The Valley Trust, working in the field of primary health care, has been
involved in uplifting rural communities for over 50 years, and is a model of
excellence for development initiatives throughout Africa. Community development
is a major focus in the area, empowering people from previously disadvantaged
communities by creating jobs and providing opportunities for them.
The Mariannhill Monastery near Pinetown, established by Roman Catholic monks over 100 years ago, is a local landmark with striking architecture. The monastery is involved in the development of the surrounding communities, has an art gallery featuring the works of local artists and a fascinating museum detailing the monastery’s rich history. Sharon Burdett (031 701 6442/083 245 7427) offers various tours of the grounds and museum for a donation of at least R20, which goes towards the monastery’s upkeep. Every Saturday morning from 9am-1pm there is a small market where local cheeses, vegetables, eggs, bread and crafts are sold. Visitors can also buy refreshments at the tea garden (Open weekdays from 9am-4pm, Saturdays from 9am-2pm and Sundays from 10am-3pm).
Exchange your wedding vows in our quaint stone chapel or under the gazebo overlooking
the Valley of 1000 Hills, then celebrate in one of our sophisticated, yet intimate reception venues.
Our magical location for an unforgettable wedding and romantic reception is ideally situated halfway between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Tranquil surroundings and professional service makes the Manor House at Falcon Crest your perfect choice of venue.
Embocraft conducts skills training to develop unique craft products as an income generation project for community members throughout KwaZulu-Natal. These products are marketed through our centre, where visitors are
welcome; your support can ensure their sustainability.Open Monday to Friday, from 8am to 4pm and the first Saturday of every month.
Entrance to parking is off Kearsney Road.

Shongweni is most famous for its dam and nature reserve, making it the
premier destination in the area for nature lovers. Shongweni Dam and Game
Reserve offers hiking trails through thorn bush, and large game such as
bushbuck, wildebeest, rhino and giraffe can be seen. Visitors have a variety of
accommodation options, ranging from lodges, to hutted and tented camps,
to camping and caravanning. Bird watchers will be dazzled by the rich variety
of bird life in the reserve, from the shy pygmy kingfisher to the beautiful
African fish eagle.

THOUSAND HILLS VISITOR’S GUIDE14
Shongweni offers its share of exhilaration too. Canoeing is popular on the dam, there are
a number of challenging rock climbing walls on the cliff faces, and those who can handle
dizzying heights can abseil or rap jump down the dam wall.
Enjoy one of the oldest
and most scenic railway
day trips in South Africa.
1000 Hills Choo-Choo trips
run the last Sunday of every
month. The train departs from
Kloof Station (Stokers Arms
Tavern) and winds through the
picturesque Valley of 1000 Hills to the station at Inchanga, before
returning along the same route. Guests can disembark for lunch and
view the craft market at Inchanga Station.

Monteseel, adventure lovers can also paraglide in the thermals and up
draughts, and rock climbers will find no shortage of challenging cliffs to

Over the years, the Valley of 1000 Hills has become a major lifestyle
destination. There is a wide range of pubs, restaurants and bars to suit every
taste and style.
Then there is the shopping. Small roadside centres offer a charming
shopping experience, with many antique shops and local arts and crafts
centres selling collectibles unique to the area. The Heritage Market in
Hillcrest is a picturesque Victorian-style shopping and community centre. It
has provided a relaxing alternative to mall mania since 1993 and is home
to a number of local shops, retail stores, restaurants and bars in an open
air, garden setting famous for the thousands of roses lining every pathway.
Hillcrest Corner is the area’s latest mall and is a one-stop destination offering
everything from the latest fashion trends to antiques and collectibles, and is
conveniently set right in the centre of Hillcrest.

Thai cuisine is unique, not merely a regional adaptation of
Chinese or Indian cooking. There is no single adjective to
describe the basic characteristic taste of Thai food,
which comes from a mixture of salt, pepper,
garlic and coriander root pounded together.
Come and ‘work your way’ through our
extensive menu for yourself or try our sushi
conveyor bar. Takeaways available on all items.

Handsome at the helm of lush coffee and banana plantations, these arty rock cottages provide a home for roving hearts. Set in the Valley of a 1000 Hills,

When the day’s done say tata to the sun and watch the flames bop to the beat of your bongo drum.
An educational bush camp is being built on the farm wherein certain travelers may volunteer to assist.

Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a hi-tech, worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the
world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache’s existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS device can then try to locate the geocache. Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents, and there are over 882,600 active geocaches over the world.

Big EventsThe Comrades Marathon, run every year between Pietermaritzburg and
Durban, has become one of the world’s best-known ultra-marathons. It
owes its existence to a tough soldier named Vic Clapham, who, during
the Great War of 1914-1918, fought and marched 1700 miles across
East Africa with the South African infantry in pursuit of Gen. Paul Von
Lettow-Vorbeck’s askari battalions. He decided to organise a marathon
in memory of his comrades who suffered untold hardships during that
epic march.
The first Comrades Marathon took place on 24 May 1921, Empire
Day, starting outside the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg with 34 runners.
It has continued every year since then, with the exception of the war
years of 1941-1945, with the direction alternating each year between
Pietermaritzburg and Durban.
The world-famous Comrades Marathon, featuring the world’s best long-distance runners, is held
every year in June

Inanda Dam is the venue for one of the world’s most gruelling sporting
events, the Dusi Canoe Marathon. Starting in Pietermaritzburg, contestants
must paddle and run for three days along the Umsindusi and Umgeni rivers
until they reach the sea in Durban. This tough event is held every January
and attracts competitors from around the world to take on the might of the
Valley of 1000 Hills.
The MTN Amashova National Classic is another race from Pietermaritzburg
to Durban, this time a road race on bicycles. The 106km race, now in its 23rd
year, has surged in popularity over the last few years, with thousands of riders
taking to the roads and cheered on by spectators as they whiz past. The race
takes the riders through the heart of the Valley of 1000 Hills, and also has a
shorter 38km route starting in Hillcrest for more casual riders.5 Competitors crossing Inanda Dam during the Duzi Canoe Marathon, held every year in January
