Application

To confirm a date for the 2010 Mount Magnet Festival

Background

The Festival was originally planned to take place on 28 and 29 August to coincide with the

Variety Club Visit. Variety have now advised that they will be arriving late afternoon on

Sunday 29 August and have their own function planned for participants that evening. The

venue for the Variety Club function is Anzac Hall which was also planned to house the art

exhibition over the festival weekend.

Comment

Ideally the Festival would need to be held in September, October or early November before

it becomes too hot. This will still give enough time to obtain funding and properly promote

the Festival and Art Exhibition.

Options for the Festival weekend include –

28 and 29 August – To coincide with the Variety Club visit. Set up time for the Variety

Club function mean that the Hall will not be available for the Art Exhibition on Sunday and

a new venue for the exhibition will have to be found. Accommodation over this weekend is

also heavily booked and it may be difficult for Festival goers to find accommodation.

25 and 26 September – is the only long weekend between September and December

however this is also the date for the Meekafest.

2 and 3 October – middle of school holidays. This would mean that our advertising of the

Festival would occur in the lead up to, and during, school holidays and may increase

visitation over the holidays in general. People would have the option of extending their visit

either prior to or after the Festival during the school holidays.

9 and 10 October – last weekend of school holidays (Monday 11 is a pupil free day). This

would mean that our advertising of the Festival would occur in the lead up to, and during,

school holidays and may increase visitation over the holidays in general.

16 and 17 October – to coincide with the Mount Magnet Race Day. In order to promote

tourism and attract tourists to Mount Magnet, the event will need to have a strong theme

reflecting historical and or cultural aspects of life in Mount Magnet.

Application

To consider the replacement of information for the Tourism Information Board for

Federation/Foster Park

Background

The Tourist Information Bay is frequented regularly by travellers for information on where

to go and what services are available. Over the years, this information has deteriorated and

some of it has become obsolete.

Comment

In order to ensure that the information can be changed without too much cost, the staff have drawn

a possible design which uses coloured A3 sheets of paper which can be printed at the Shire Office.

This will allow for changes to the details to be completed easily and the notices replaced.

An idea was for a business card to be attached for all the businesses operating in the area.

Once again, by keeping the system simple, the cards can be changed frequently and updated

with new information.

The information on the board will be advertising the tourism attractions for Mount Magnet

Town, the Tourist Drive and also a regional map showing the location of Mount Magnet in

relations to the surrounding towns.

The Information Centre opened for the season on the 01 April. Over Easter the Centre was

closed Good Friday, opened three hours Saturday, Sunday and Monday, now back to normal

hours of 9am-12midday and 1pm-4pm Monday to Friday. Saturdays 9am-12 Midday.

99 people visited the centre during the period of 01 -

07 April.

The Centre is receiving consignment stock from various members of the community, which

is most welcome.

Merchandise orders are being placed on books and maps and we are developing wildflower

and ‘historical item’ designs to be used on stubby holders, postcards, key rings, wrapping

paper etc.

Adverts for the Information Centre and the Caravan Park have been booked and design

layout accepted for the Australia’s Golden Outback minimum two page feature on the

Gascoyne-Murchison in the Travel section of the Western Australian on Saturday the 10 of

April.

Brochures for the new season have been ordered and arriving. Eleven hundred and fifty

Mount Magnet brochures have been sent to various Centres within the state including a

package of brochures from Mount Magnet, Meekatharra, Cue, Yalgoo and Sandstone to the

Western Australian Tourist Centre in Perth.

I attended The Perth Caravan and Camping Show, as a volunteer on the Australia’s Golden

Outback stand, where I was able to promote the Gascoyne-Murchison area by handing out

brochures from the various towns and flyers on Station Stays. Approximately 48,000 people

visited the Silver Jubilee pavilion during the show. During this period the Golden Outback

proved to be a place of great interest to many of the visitors. It also has helped Mount

Magnet Information Centre to build on relations with other centres who were involved and

to begin the networking process which is progressing very successfully.

A new agreement between the Shire and June Boase has been signed. The Shire has

acquired all stock excluding the Postcard and Card lines. These two series of products will

still be on consignment from and supplied by June Boase herself.

Bob Ford has been reviewing the Tourist Trail Signs. It is proposed that the old be replaced

by new, ‘double sided’ signs, named and numbered appropriately.

13. Lennonville Railway Platform 14. The Granites

15. Mount Magnet Race Course 16. Mount Magnet Cemetery

Example: Proposed layout

It has been suggested that The Granites be given an extra large sign (one for each entry point

and along with the two Tourist Trail signs) as an introduction to it’s own identity and

separate from the Tourist Trail (being a very popular, well recognised iconic feature in it’s

own right).

11 NEW BUSINESS

P Peirce arrived at the meeting at 2.45pm

K Lucy left the meeting at 3.27pm

11.1 Camping at the Granites

Camping at the Granites was discussed and it was agreed that wood collecting for

barbecues was an issue and that the Shire investigate improved signage to indicate that it

was a day area only with no camping.

11.2 Park Benches / Public Seating

There had been public comment about the lack of park benches on the main street and

condition of the seating at the Tourist Information Centre Park. The issue of graffiti on

public amenities was discussed and it was agreed that the Shire investigate ideas for

seating along the walk trail at the creek and also seating at the Tourist Park.

12 NEXT MEETING

Tourism Advisory Committee Meeting to be held on 20 May 2010.

13 CLOSURE OF MEETING
