Scio is no Gotham City, but it may have beenthe home of the CrstBatman.
Spanning the GeneseeRiver Valley and at one timerunning all the way to thePennsylvania state line, in1855 the town of Scio was themost populated town in Alle-gany County. Today the pop-ulation of the town is about1,833 a little more than halfits mid-19th century popula-tion of 3,600.
Be town was Crst settledaround 1805 by JosephKnight, a minuteman in theAmerican Revolution, fromOneida County. KnightsCreek is named for him. Batman is also listed as one ofthe early settlers of the town.
In the 1876 History ofAllegany County county his-torian John S. Minnard states,In 1820 Bomas Fitz-Sim-mons settled up KnightsCreek and raised his sons,Jerome, John, Lewis, Robertand Batman and their nu-merous sisters.
Be name Batman mayhave been a misconstruedfrom an old, handwrittencensus, but as time would tell,Scio certainly would become the home ofheroes.
Be town was created in 1823 from theTown of Angelica. Territory was lost to thetowns of Amity in 1830, Wellsville in 1855,and Willing in 1851.
Before being named Scio, the town was
called Bloods Corner orBloods named aEer atavern owner, and at onetime Riddleville. Be ori-gin of the name Scio isstill a matter of debate. Some believe it is an In-dian name leE over fromthe Seneca who roamedthe area. Be most com-monly held belief datesfrom the construction ofthe Erie Railroad 1849-1851. Construction wasdone by section with thearea in this part of thecounty called section10 which was trans-formed to Scio. How-ever the town of Scio wasformed, by that name, in1823, many years beforethe railroad. In 1820, onthe island of Scio in theAegean thousands ofChristians were killed bythe Turks. PoliticianDaniel Webster gave animpassioned speech thatswept the country, so itssuggested that Sciosfounding fathers hon-ored the slain Christiansby naming the townScio.
At least onelocal historian conjectures the name may bederived from an 1804 map of 100,000 acresof land along the Genesee River belongingto I.B. Church. Be tract is divided intonumbered, square mile sections. Onesquare mile of land near the present day siteof Scio is designated as 10 or possibly Sec-
tion 10 (SC10).With the com-
ing of the railroadand the building oftwo miles ofswitches within thetown, Scios lumberindustry Dourishedand for several yearsthe town grew andprospered.
According tothe Scio Sesqui-Centennial book, aseries of eventswhich occurred in1856 set the townon a path less trav-
eled, 1856 proved to be the turning pointfor Scio, and was indeed a fateful year as faras the towns destiny was concerned. Breeevents helped turn the tide against any fur-ther growth for Scio, for at least a century.First Scio deeded 2.5 square acres (River-side) to Wellsville. Secondly a massive for-est Cre destroyed pines and hemlockshampering the prosperous lumbering in-dustry which because of the railroad, hadsustained the town. At the time there werenearly 20 sawmills lo-cated on the streamsthroughout the town.Birdly, the townspeo-ple were persuaded tonot allow tanneries tobe built in the town asmany were contemplat-ing and Wellsvilleended up with the tan-neries and the eco-nomic beneCt.
However accordingto Minnard, by 1875Scio had a newspaper, skating rink, operahouse, school, fourchurches, two hotels onegrocery store, Cve drygoods stores, two drugstores, a jeweler, harnessshop, two shoe shops, several blacksmithsand a bank, but apparently an inadequateCre department.
Historian Corabelle Lounsberry, whowith severals others is compiling a local his-tory of Scio in the Scio Memorial Librarysaid, My mother always said that therewere two Cres, one aEer the other, that de-stroyed one side of Scios Main Street andthen the other side.
Fires continued to take their toll inScio, according to the Sesqui-Centennialbook, A big Cre in 1906 destroyed most ofthe town hall and historic records. In 1911another Cre destroyed another block ofbuildings on Main Street. ....Because of somany Cres, and the decline of the railroadand oil, men began leaving Scio for jobs orto start businesses in new areas. ....causingthe prosperity of Scio to decline so that by
1896, it was quite a little town. One of Scios claims to fame, oil is writ-
ing yet another chapter in the towns his-tory. On June 12, 1879 O.P. Taylor drilledthe Crst successful oil well in the countyopening up the Allegany Oil Fields. Bewell was drilled in Petrolia in the southeastcorner of the Town of Scio.
Scios history also records that the townsent 35 men to Cght in the Civil War. One,Peter Keenan, led 400 men in a charge
against 40,000 Rebels atChancellorsville, Va. and losthis life.
Be towns honor rollshows that hundreds servedin both World Wars, the Ko-rean War, Vietnam War andDesert Storm. For a town this size we havecertainly sent a lot of youngmen to war, said Lounsberry. On April 14, 2004, Scio HighSchool graduate, Marine Cor-poral Jason Dunham riskedhis life to save other Marineswhen he threw himself on agrenade in Karabilah, Iraq.Be corporal died of hiswounds eight days later. InJan. 2007 he was posthu-mously awarded the Medal of
Honor in a White House ceremony. Todaya signs at the edge of the village recognizesthis son of Scios sacriCce.

Rainchains: An Attractive Alternative to Dress Up Your HomeAs an attractive alternative to downspouts, some use rain chains as a way to channel water from the gutter into a rain barrel. Downspouts serve a very specific, utilitarian function: To let water drain out of the gutter and into a storm drain or on the lawn. Rain chains serve the same function, although they are not able to handle quite the volume of a downspout. An added feature of rain chains is that they do not send water into the storm drain system. Rather, the water runs down them into a decorate bowl or barrel. Some municipalities offer incentives to homeowners who disconnect their downspouts from the storm drain to ease pressure on them. If you do this, a rain chain can be a better alternative. Rain chains have been used by the Japanese for a long time as a decorative way to channel water away from a homes foundation. A downspout serves the same purpose, but it is not nearly as aesthetically pleasing. Weighing between 5 and 10 pounds, rain chains attach to the gutter through the hole where the downspout would normally be. They extend to the ground and are secured to prevent against excessive movement. Traditionally, they are attached to a decorate bowl that fills with water and creates a circular fountain when it overflows. In addition to catching the downward flow of water, it can also serve as a birdbath.
Downspout or Rain Chain?A rain chain is far more attractive than a downspout, no matter how masterfully it blends into the dcor of the home. Downspouts serve a very specific need, but as is the case with many utilitarian features of American homes, it focuses on function at the expense of form. Rain chains, on the other hand, serve a practical purpose while maintaining an aesthetic appeal.Rain chains are not very well equipped to handle a tremendous downpour during a storm, however. If you decide on rain chains, it is still necessary to have a certain number of downspouts, just in case of a deluge. Install rain chains in the front of your home so they are visible. After all, they are meant to be pleasing to the senses.
In order to allow rain water to escape from a system of gutters, downspouts are typically used. A nice alternative, however, is to install one or more rain chains in their place. Although they are not equipped to handle the sudden downpour of a storm and must be used in conjunction with downspouts elsewhere, they combine function and form into one unique package.

October Is
Breast Cancer in the United States One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. 1 Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women age 40-50 years in the U.S.. 5 Breast cancer is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths among women in the U.S. 1 The five-year relative survival rate for all women with breast cancer found at a local stage (cancer that has not spread) in the U.S. is 99 percent, 84 percent for regional disease and 23 percent for distant stage disease.4 In 2012, an estimated 226,870 cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women and 2,190 cases among men in the U.S. 4 An estimated 39,510 women and 410 men will die from breast cancer in the U.S. in 2012. 4 A case of breast cancer is diagnosed among women every two minutes, and a woman dies of breast cancer every 13 minutes in the U.S.4 There are more than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors alive in the U.S. today, the largest group of cancer survivors in the country.8 Approximately 5 to 10 percent of breast cancers in the U.S. are due to inherited BRCA1 or BRCA 2 genetic mutations(less than 1 percent of the general population). 1 Approximately 95 percent of all breast cancers in the U.S. occur in women 40 years of age and older.1 Recent studies suggest that many women in the U.S. are not following recommended guidelines for mammography screening by having their first screening later than recommended, not having one at recommended intervals or not receiving appropriate and timely follow-up of positive screening results. This may lead to more advanced tumor size and stage at diagnosis. 21 Breast Cancer Facts and Figures 2011-2012 ACS2 Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Facts and Figures 2011, ACS3 NCI Website- http://seer.cancer.gov/statfacts/html/breast.html#prevalence4 Cancer Facts and Figures 2012, ACS5 SEER Cancer Statistics Review 1975-2008-table 4.12- http://seer.cancer.gov/csr/1975_2008/results_single/sect_04_table.12.pdf6 American Cancer Society, Global Cancer Facts & Figures 2nd edition7 Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, The Challenge Ahead: Progress and Setbacks in Breast and Cervical Cancer, September 2011.
