Dear Ministers and Parishioners of Saint Joseph Basilica,

October 13th marks the 100th anniversary of Our Lady’s final apparition at Fatima. On this day, Our Lady revealed her identity to the three young visionaries: “I am the Lady of the Rosary. Continue always to pray the Rosary every day.” She asked for the promotion of the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for the conversion of sinners and for the reparation of the offenses committed against the Divine Majesty.

Mary’s invitation a hundred years ago remains true to this day. We are called to pray the rosary and to consecrate our heart to her Immaculate Heart – not just as individuals but as a family, as a community and as Church. Why? Because the very content of the Rosary and the very content of her Immaculate Heart is her Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. In meditating and praying the rosary, we enter into the very life of Mary whose whole existence is a complete and total openness to her Son. In other words, through Our Lady, we are given access to the very heart of God, for “no one knows Christ better than Mary; no one can introduce us to a profound knowledge of his mystery better than his Mother” (Rosarium Virginis Mariae by JPII, section 14).

We, at St. Joseph Basilica, will celebrate the centenary of Our Lady of Fatima on Friday, October 13th at 7:00 PM. We will begin the celebration with the blessing of the new statue of Our Lady of Fatima followed immediately by the Holy Eucharist. After Mass, together we will process around the block to sing Marian hymns and to pray the rosary in different languages. At the culmination of the procession, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for Benediction and the Eucharistic Blessing for the sick and the elderly.

We invite all our ministers and parishioners especially those who are sick and elderly to join us in responding to Our Lady’s call to pray the Rosary for peace and justice in the world.

Fr. John Carillo

Associate Pastor

Prayer to Our Lady of Fatima

Most Holy Virgin who hast deigned to come to Fatima, to reveal the treasures of graces hidden in the recitation of the Rosary, inspire our

hearts with a sincere love of this devotion that meditating on the Mysteries of our Redemption recalled therein, we may obtain the

conversion of sinners and the favors we ask you now, for the greater glory of God, for your own honor, and for the good of souls. Amen.

Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima, pray for us!

The flowers in the entire sanctuary are in memory of Bob & Mary Ann Hungerford, and Annette Snyder’s birthdays!

Thank You from Fr. Jeremiah Holland

On behalf of myself and Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, I would like to thank the people of St. Joseph from the bottom of my heart for the wonderful celebration of my 50 years of priesthood. As Sr. Philomena Cassidy would have said, “You’re the Best!” Thank you to everyone who planned and brought about the this wonderful undertaking, especially all those who partici-pated in the Mass. As for the Reception, it was fantastic and I thank all who shared their won-derful gifts with myself and the people of St. Joseph. And lastly, I would like to thank Fr. George and Fr. John for their hospitality. Their warm reception of myself and my fellow priests and their hospitality was overwhelming. I am truly touched and will remember this event with joy. Bless you all and remember you are in my prayers.

Fr, Jeremiah Holland

STEWARDSHIP EFFORTS at ST. JOSEPH BASILICA

As a follow-up to his letter to parishioners, Ken Hokenson wanted to once again announce the schedule for our Stewardship effort:

October 14th & 15th Father Dan Danielson will speak at every Mass on this weekend on "The Spirituality of Stewardship". (Because the Diocesan SPRED Mass will be celebrated at the 11:30 Mass that weekend, Fr. Dan will address the 11:30 Mass on November 5th).

October 21st & 22nd A parishioner will speak at all of the Masses about "Time and Talent", two of the three key elements of Stewardship. The Parish Ministry Fair will take place after every Mass that weekend, where you will be invited to sign up for the ministries in which you wish to share your time and talent.

October 28th & 29th A parishioner will speak on "Treasure", the third element of Stewardship. We will then ask you to give prayerful consideration to your financial commitment to the parish for next year, making your commitment on November 11th &12th. Returning a portion of the many gifts God has given to you is a fundamental principle of our faith. Your commitment will enable the family of St. Joseph Basilica to continue to be a vibrant and faith filled parish, committed to doing God's work.

On Sunday, September 24, we celebrated Father Jerry Holland's 50th anniversary of priesthood! It was a wonderful day of rejoicing for our parish.

We celebrated at the 11:30 Mass with Father Jerry, Father George, Father John, Deacon Mario, Bishop Steve Blair from Stockton, additional priests from the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, including Father Rich Danyluk, Father Pat Crowley, Father Bill Moore, Father Patrick Greene, Father Martin O'Loghlen, Father Pat Fanning, and from our island, Father Paul Schmidt and Rabbi Allen Bennett. Afterwards, we enjoyed a gathering in the high school quad, where we shared wonderful food, drink and music as a community and visited with our guests and each other.

It was an opportunity to celebrate and thank Father Jerry and all of the Sacred Heart priests for all they have done for our parish over the years. And it was an opportunity to celebrate our parish and all we have been for each other, both yesterday and today.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the many who worked together to make the day of celebration so wonderful. Thank you to the many priests who traveled from afar to celebrate with us. Thank you, to Father John, for creating a beautiful worship aid and to Nicole for her help with communications for the event. Thank you to those who brought photos to share of time spent with Father Jerry and the Sacred Heart priests and to those who took photos and video at the event. At Mass, thank you to David Howitt, Eric Bertelsen as cantor, and the choir for the lovely music, Frederica von Stade for her beautiful rendition of Simple Gifts, Jim Marsh for his bag piping, the Sacristans, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, alter servers, gift bearers, those who shared the leis with our guests before the blessing for Father Jerry and those who prepared the environment in the church.

At the gathering, thank you to the many ministries, families and individuals who brought amazing food and donated beverages to share with our community. A huge thank you Helene Carr, Karen deRobinson, Eric Bertelsen and the many wonderful community members who assisted in setting up, organizing and serving the food and cleaning up afterwards. Thank you also to Manuel Robinson and Francisco Zamora from the Knights of Columbus for tending the drink booth during the festivities. And at the event, thank you for the wonderful toasts, for singing along with the music, for he lively conversation, the abundant laughter and perfect weather! And lastly, thank you to the planning committee including Eric Bertelsen, Helene Carr, Rich Davis, Karen deRobinson, Dana Haering, Abe and Nada Hitti and Sue Spiersch who made it all happen.

As Father Rich said in his reflection on Father Jerry, "...we came to celebrate a man who blessed, broke and shared bread in many ways around many different tables. A man who taught and still teaches us how to do the same." Thank you Father Jerry and may we continue to break bread for each other.
