The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Morsels & Tidbits

Greetings from Poland As you are reading this I am enjoying my time with my parents, in Poland. It is good to be with your family, even if just for a short period of time. I hope things are going well and you are having a great weekend. Blessings and see you next weekend. Generosity, redefined - Notes on the Scripture Many are shocked at the idea of biblical tithing. Give 10 percent - 10 per-cent/1 - of our resources to the Lord? Who would do this? Yet some Chris-tians do it as a matter of course. No statistics indicate that anyone ever died of tithing—or of generosity exercised on any scale. The gospel doesn’t follow the widow who put her whole livelihood into the temple treasury after her sig-nature gesture of trust. Yet we’re led to believe God will care for her with the same extravagance that she shows. The best counsel on generosity remains: give until it scares you. Family Movie Night Plan to join us on Saturday, Nov. 24, for our annual “Pizza and a Movie Night“ (following 5:15 pm Mass) featuring the movie, “The Star - the story of the First Christmas” Register this weekend in the Narthex and see page 5 for more information. Advent is coming Advent is a special time of year to gain spiritual fruits, particularly peace and joy. This year, our parish is offering a new program specifically written to help Catholics prepare for Jesus’ birth as Mary did. It guides you through Mary’s experiences and encounters and sheds light on how they relate to our prepa-ration for Christmas. This program is called Rejoice! Advent Medita-tions with Mary. We will have the opportunity to share these engaging Mari-an Advent reflections in video and journal. Please check our bulletin (page 4) and website (sfaorland.org) for more details or register at the table in the nar-thex. Congratulations and Thank You I just want to take this time to express my gratitude to all parishioners who supported our Grand Raffle this year. This is an important fundraiser for our parish and I am truly grateful for your generosity. I also want to announce and congratulate our winners: 1st Prize ($30,000) Mr. William Winters, 2nd Prize ($10,000) Mr. Robert Long, 3rd Prize ($5,000) Regina Knapp.

Advent is a special time of year to gain spiritual fruits, particularly peace and joy. A special media-tor of these graces is our Blessed Mother Mary. In her humanity, she responded with virtue in a spe-cial way when the Lord Jesus entered into her life. Her response teaches us lessons that we can best learn from her in the history of salvation. Ascension offers a new program specifically writ-ten to help Catholics prepare for Jesus’ birth as Mary did. It guides you through Mary’s experienc-es and encounters and sheds light on how they relate to our preparation for Christmas. This pro-gram is called Rejoice! Advent Meditations with Mary, from Fr. Mark Toups. It pairs thought-provoking and meaningful meditations with beauti-ful artwork and encouraging, inspirational videos. This year, we have the opportunity to share these engaging Marian Advent reflections in video and journal form through Ascension’s Rejoice! pro-gram. It’s an opportunity to draw more intentionally into the season of Advent and to obtain the grace associated with Advent devotion. Morning and evening sessions will be offered. You may also participate on your own by going online. Advent Mission mornings will be held November 30th, December 7th & 14th at 8:30 AM in the Great Room. Advent Mission evenings will be held November 26th, December 3rd & 10th at 7:00 PM in the St. Francis Center (up the hill). Rejoice jour-nals will be available for purchase ($3.00 each) beginning November 3rd after all masses or through the parish office. Visit rejoiceprogram.com for more details.

Old and new!

My name is Kelly Johnson and this was my first year going on the St. Francis mission trip. I went on a mis-sion trip last Summer through a family friend’s parish and I really enjoyed it, so I decided it would be fun to try our church’s mission trip. It didn’t disappoint. This experience was very different from what I had in mind. I expected it to be very similar to what I was doing the summer be-

fore, which was fixing up some houses. Instead, I was helping out at a summer camp for under-privileged kids, ages five to sixteen. I am so happy that my group was as-signed to go to this camp because all the kids were very grateful for us

being there. All the kids were so sweet and were constantly thank-ing us for playing with them. My group leader drove us past some of the camper’s houses on the way back to the school we were staying at and it was very sad to see how little they had. Some of the kids

didn’t even have a house, instead it would be a trailer, tent, or a little shack. This was a very humbling experi-ence to see these homes. These kids have next to nothing,

a decline in a strong Catholic Culture. The first was within the church, the second outside. The publication of the encyclical l Humane Vitae by Pope Paul VI had a major impact. Prior to the encyclical, Pope Paul established a commission to study church teaching on artificial birth control – especially the use of what was new at the time, “the pill.” His commission reported back that the use of the pill would be an acceptable method and within the church teaching. Paul rejected their re-port. His encyclical taught that any use of contraceptives, includ-ing the pill, remained outside Church teach-ing. The encyclical was not unanimously received. I don’t have the space to review the encycli-cal or the varied reac-tions to it. In essence, birth control is a

Adult Faith Formation AROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed Upton

I want to continue the reflection I began last week, sharing some thoughts about what I think are some of the reasons for the decline in Sunday Mass attend-ance. These reflections are based on my experi-ences. They may or may not reflect the experi-ence of others; and so all may not agree. I am writing to provide a per-spective not win a de-bate. Last week I focused on the time before the Sec-ond Vatican Council, ap-proximately pre 1965. I pointed out in those days we had a large per-cent of people attending mass. This participation was supported by a Catholic Culture. This culture, in a variety of ways, supported and encouraged participa-tion. As this culture be-gan to disappear, so al-so began a slow decline in participation. In the middle 60’s, in general, after the Sec-ond Vatican Council there were two signifi-cant events that caused

unique decision of a hus-band and wife. There are many variables within a marriage which lead a couple to a decision re-garding the necessity to practice birth control. Many couples, after re-flection, felt in their con-science that such a deci-sion was responsible and moral. In the West-ern Churches, Europe and North America, this reasoning of married couples was supported by many bishops and priests. In the church, there were always people who disa-greed with church teach-ing and made a decision based on conscience. However, this decision of conscience was wide-spread. Couples were encouraged to not reject this teaching or the church out of hand, but to make a decision for themselves based on their conscience. The teaching of the en-cyclical and the re-sponse to it was divisive – not all couples and or clergy agreed with this

right moment and I thought now is the time. The entire weekend for me was spiritual, but there was one moment on Sunday when it all came together and all made sense. I felt closer to my faith and to Jesus than I had in a long time. I encourage you to take the chance. You will not be disap-pointed.

I had been attending St. Francis parish for a bout 3 years when I attended

CRHP. I only knew two or three people. During my CRHP ex-perience, I met an amazing group of women and now feel even more a part of the wonderful, wel-coming parish. I cannot say why this time was right for me; life is so busy it is diffi-cult to carve out time for self. But a friend told me about it at the

Dear CRHP Community: The Continuation Committee would like to in-vite you to join us up on the hill after 5:15 mass on November 17 (6:00 - 9:00 PM) for some wine and cheese and camaraderie. It will be a good time to rekindle some friend-ships and memories of your CRHP experi-ence. On behalf of the Continuation Committee I am encouraging you to reach out to someone you know who would be interested in attending this year’s CRHP Retreats. All of us who have attended CRHP remember the spiritual growth we experienced and friendships that we made. It is time to share our personal growth with fellow parishioners. Talk to a friend and en-courage them to be a part of the CRHP expe-rience. As you remember it is only about 31 hours, one evening away from home. Finding the time is easy if you decide to attend.

The dates for this year’s CRHP are: Women on February 16 - 17

Men March 2 - 3 Please RSVP to John Wator at [email protected] We appreciate all of your continued prayers and support. Help us to continue to make CRHP a successful experience for the parish-ioners of St. Francis.

decision of conscience. However, it took place and continues to this day. I am not writing about the encyclical – but about attendance at Mass. The strong church culture of the past taught, what the church teaches, I do. This event had couples saying, af-ter prayer and reflection, we will make a decision based on our individual marriage and its exigen-cies. This reaction to the en-cyclical began an atti-tude of using conscience in relationship to church teaching. All people who disagreed with this en-cyclical did not stop coming to Mass. But this reaction did set a tone of reflective thinking about a response to church teaching.

and we have so much and take it for granted. Being able to see all the trailers and shacks, that they call a home, made me realize how much we really do have and how fortunate we are to have a home with air/heating, food, clean water, and so much more. Despite these kids hav-ing very little, they still always had a smile on their face when we pulled up in the morn-ing and would come out and give us hugs. Be-ing able to put on a camp to make them happy was an amazing experience. We weren’t sure if the older kids would want to do stuff with us, but every day for the last hour we would have all the campers and the three groups of helpers all go out to a field and play a game called spud. That was one of my favorite parts because we were all there together play-ing and just having fun. We would also say a prayer as a whole group at the end of each day. On the last day one of the camp-ers, Christopher, said the prayer and he thanked all of us for coming, giving them

attention and just playing with them. It occurred to me when he was saying this that he might not get much atten-tion at home. Being able to have an impact

on these kids’ lives will always be something that I’ll remember. When we would get back from our camps and worksites we would have different activities. One night was adoration, an-other was four corners and I really enjoyed them. Four corners is where they have four different things you can do during the set time. One of them was confes-sion, another was talking to an adult, the third was writing a letter to your-self, a prayer, and what you're grateful for, and the last one was silent time to pray. Because I was working at the camp for the underprivileged kids and seeing their homes, it made it very easy for me to be able to pray and be grateful for everything I have. God had me go on this adventure not only to deepen my faith and be-come closer to God but also to remind me how fortunate I am to have a home and not have to wonder when my next meal might be. This mis-sion trip was a very fun and humbling experi-ence. I know God put me exactly where I needed to be to get the most out this mission trip. I’m so happy that I did it!

Mission Trip Reflection, cont.

Service reflection - We Are ALL Called by, Debbie Burzinski It has taken some time, and a lot of reflection and prayer for me to be fo-cused and “present” in the beauty of everyday en-counters. I am so blessed to work with, and along-side, our parish youth. As a wife, mother, neighbor, friend, parishioner, former Catechist and Youth Coor-dinator, adult leader, and volunteer I have experi-enced first-hand the gener-osity of the families of our wonderful parish. I am truly grateful for your support. The need has grown, and I ask that you consider more... No doubt about it, our strength comes from a group effort, as reminded in the hymn “We Are Called,” by David Haas.

“...We are called to act for justice, we are called to love tenderly, we are called to serve one another, to walk humbly with God...”

So, what speaks to you? To be a voice for the neglect-ed, or to work alongside our parish youth in service to others? Encourage your children or neighbor to be open and participate in youth ministry outreach efforts; sponsor a meal for Helping Hands or PADS? Or ac-company a group to a supper? We Are All Called. Youth Ministry is responsible for dinner and over-sight for PADS the first Friday of the months Octo-ber - April. Do you have 5 hours a month to serve those less fortunate? Please call or text 312-519-8773.

Special thanks to the reliable volunteers, pictured above and

below, who helped serve at PADS recently.

27th Annual Christmas Outreach Appeal 2018

Each Christmas the families of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish have fol-lowed the example of Christ to love and serve one another. We re-member not only sharing our blessings with the people we love, but also with those less fortunate; the hungry, the poor, and those facing the challenges to overcome life’s difficulties. Let us, as a parish, share God’s blessings this Christmas to assist our fellow man, especially those in need of our help and prayers. The Christmas Outreach Program supports: ∗ St. Agatha Sharing Tree - purchasing Christmas gifts for 400

people. ∗ St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Charities Committee programs:
