SITE LAYOUT PLANNING Site layout planning is an important task

that involves identification of the Temporary Facilities (TFs) which will be needed to support construction operations.

Site layout planning is about determining the size and shape, and appropriately positioning of the temporary facilities within the boundaries of a construction site.

Proper site layout planning will improve site safety for workforce and public.

SITE LAYOUT PLANNING Zouein and Tommelein (1999) developed

a dynamic layout planning system. Similar to traditional resource allocation,

their models try to modify the schedule at various intervals so that the site space is not over allocated.

The latter model used linear programming to dynamically allocate space to resources one-by-one, so that total cost is minimized.

SITE LAYOUT PLANNINGThe models that deal with dynamic layout planning in construction are limited.

Cheng (1992) developed a system called ArcSite that is comprised of a knowledge based system, integrated with a geographic information system (GIS) to locate the TFs on construction sites.

SITE LAYOUT PLANNING This process of defining the site needs of TFs

is illustrated in Fig. 1. In this figure, a list of TFs (offices, rebar shop,

batch plant, and carpentry shop) is considered as resources assigned to activities.

For example, the ‘‘batch plant’’ is assigned to activities 3 and 10.

Accordingly, the service time of the batch plant on the site is between the start date of activity 3 and the finish date of activity 10.

Similarly, the service times for the four facilities are shown in Fig. 1

Page 11: 114 site layout-health and safety

SITE LAYOUT PLANNING Knowing the FST and FFT of each TF, it is

possible to decide on the facilities that should be considered for any intermediate layout.

The start time of a layout j is t j and the layout interval spans from t j tot j+1 , (start of next layout)

Thus, for a layout to service the project between times t j and t j+1 , a facility i will be considered to be placed on the site if it satisfies the following:

SITE LAYOUT PLANNINGThe TFs are necessary to support construction operations and to provide services for the workforce on site.

Inclusion of all necessary construction facilities.

Properly positioning them on site. They all have a positive effect on health and well being of site personnel.

Page 15: 114 site layout-health and safety

SITE LAYOUT PLANNINGThe TFs that have an impact on health and safety issues can be summarised as:

1.access roads2.lay down areas3.warehouses, and welfare facilities (first aid station toilet on site, labour rest area, washing facilities, and cafeteria).

Page 16: 114 site layout-health and safety

SITE LAYOUT PLANNING The size and number of these facilities

should reflect items such as: 1.the site size2.nature of the work3.the number of people who will use them. If a large number of people are working

on site or the work being carried out is particularly dirty or involves a health risk such as batching/ placing concrete more hand washing facilities are needed.

SITE LAYOUT PLANNINGSite Setup and Logistic CDM requirements- Health and Safety fully functional and compliant temporary site

accommodation arrangement as part of our site setup.

Prior to commencement on site, the site setup will include:

1.perimeter site hoarding equipped with appropriate safety and signage for directions,

2. lighting installation, 3.set of site gates for vehicle entrance4.another set for pedestrian access

Page 18: 114 site layout-health and safety

SITE LAYOUT PLANNINGThe perimeter safety segregation system,

such as: 1.‘Heras’ fencing, is to be erected and

equipped with appropriate safety and way-finding signage.

Clearly defined access routes will be defined both within the site and the surrounding grounds in accordance with contractors plan and with particular attention to the segregation of pedestrians, plant and vehicles.

Page 19: 114 site layout-health and safety

SITE LAYOUT PLANNING The delivery, storage and

distribution of materials will form part of this plan.

In addition, a safety route plan along with fire escape route plan and full site information notices will be provided in accordance with commitment under the CCS.

Typical Temporary SiteAccommodation

Page 21: 114 site layout-health and safety

SITE LAYOUT PLANNING Site Accommodation Tender documentation Carry out a site visit Establish the site accommodation and site

compound Site accommodation will INCLUDE: site office with meeting room drying / changing room W.C and canteen / dining/first aid room storage.

Page 22: 114 site layout-health and safety

SITE LAYOUT PLANNING Temporary utilities are to be established prior

to the erection of the site accommodation For temporary utilities establish a temporary

service run and connect to the existing whenever feasible

If the connection to the existing is not feasible the contractor will provide a new temporary service run from the proposed site compound area and make a connection to the main services.
