SESSION 2: 11:00am – 11:55am

SALT TOLERANCE AND NUTRITIONAL MANAGEMENT CHALLENGES WHEN GROWING SEASHORE PASPALUMWhat does turfgrass salt tolerance really mean? Fertility do’s and don’t’s for Paspalum.

SPEAKER: DR. RON DUNCANDr. Ron Duncan is a private consultant for R. Duncan EcoConsulting LLC. He developed 4 patented vegetative seashore Paspalum cultivars and co-developed two seeded Paspalum cultivars. Ron is a plant breeder and stress physiologist by training and research. He was a

Professor at the University of Georgia from 1977-2003. and worked for a private company from 2003-2010 and developed Platinum TE Paspalum. His credits include 200 refereed publica-tions and over 500 total publications including 10 books. On the side he teaches workshops on irrigation water quality, salinity and Seashore Paspalum management for Golf Course Superintendents association.

STRUCTURAL PRUNING AND GIRDLING ROOTS OF JUVENILE TREESThis presentation will explain how to identify potential long-term issues with young trees and proper techniques on how to correct these issues. We will discuss plant growth habits and how “not all trees” can be pruned the same. Examples of good pruning versus poor pruning will be discussed and the consequences of both that one should expect.

SPEAKERS: J. ZAMBO & DUDLEY HULBERTJ. Zambo is a graduate of Rutger’s University in New Jersey with a degree in Professional Turfgrass Manage-ment. He pursued a position as Assistant Golf Course Superintendent and was employed by Shadow Creek Golf Course for two years before moving on to TPC@

The Canyons Las Vegas. J left the golf course industry with the desire to broaden his horticulture experience and joined the Wynn Hotel and Casino. He began as IPM and Irrigation Manager for 2 years then promoted to Director of Exterior Horticulture with a staff of 10 supervisors and 50 gardeners between 2 hotels. After five years as Director, J joined the team at First Choice Tree Service, Inc. in Las Vegas as “Director of Pest and Plant Health” developing a new division of the company focusing on plant health and

training. Now residing in Hawaii he is currently the General Manager for Aloha Arbor Care, Owner of Plant Health Solutions Hawaii and President of Aloha Arborist Association.

Dudley Hulbert earned his B.S. from University of Hawaii in general agriculture in 1980. He began working for Steve Nimz at The Tree People in 1976 and then started his own tree care company, Trees of the Tropics, which he has owned and operated with his

wife for over 30 years. Dudley is a Certified Arborist and a past president of the Aloha Arborist Association.

SOIL ANALYSIS: A TOOL FOR OPTIMIZING FERTILITYDiscussion about the benefits and limitations of using soil analysis for optimizing soil fertility. The importance of soil nutrient balance is emphasized. The talk includes interpretation of soil analysis reports. Amendment and fertilizer maintenance strategies are covered. Examples of nutrient imbalance are demonstrated.

SPEAKER: PETER BUNNPeter Bunn, CPAg, is a professional consultant specializing in soil and plant nutrition. He partners with clients to develop crop nutrient programs that are cost effective and environmentally sound. Pete has been consulting with landscapers, arborists, nurseries, golf

courses, green house growers and farmers statewide for twenty years. He is certified with the American Society of Agronomy (2000) and Brookside Laboratories (1995).

COMPOST TEAS, A BIOLOGICAL APPROACH Compost teas can be a tool to add to any professionals arsenal. There are many products that address the physical and chemical properties of soils but few that focus solely on the soil biological component. Incorporating a biological program to existing prac-tices can provide many benefits, along with cost savings. Com-post tea benefits, uses, types of brewers and ingredients will be discussed.

SPEAKER: MARK JONGOwner, Jong’s Organic Fertilizers. Mark received his B.S. in Biology from UC Riverside and has been working with golf courses, landscapers and organic growers on incorporating a biological component to fertility and maintenance programs. Compost teas provide profes-

sional growers and landscapers a means of inoculating soil microbes to stimulate and sustain soil microbial populations.

PROGRAM SUMMARY PROGRAM SUMMARY13th ANNUAL LICH GREEN INDUSTRY CONFERENCE & TRADESHOW 13th ANNUAL LICH GREEN INDUSTRY CONFERENCE & TRADESHOW

SPEAKER: MARTIN MIYASHIROMartin Miyashiro began his career in the landscape industry on Oahu 30 years ago. He has filled positions locally as an Irrigation Technician, General Manager, VP of Sales and Marketing and currently is the Hawaii Sales Manager for Hunter Industries and FX Lumi-

naire. Martin has a passion for education and landscapes as will be evident in this session.

HIRING BEST PRACTICES: RECRUITING, INTERVIEWING AND ON BOARDING EMPLOYEESEmployers have different needs when it comes to hiring; some rely on the just-in-time approach, while others build an orga-nization that could mimic a professional football team, where backups are on staff and are ready to be called in. If not done properly, the hiring process can lead to costs well beyond the time spent conducting interviews. You have to know your strate-gy, know where to find candidates, how to interview, and how to select candidates for open positions. This session addresses the compliance and strategic aspects of the hiring process, including sourcing, interviewing and selecting candidates, making the job offer, and the orientation and onboarding process.

SPEAKER: LORI LAMUG BONNERLori Lamug Bonner is a Client HR Consultant for ProService Hawaii. Currently in her seventh year, Lori comes with a variety of HR experience including HR administration, implementation, project management, management and leadership, presentations, training

and development. As the lead trainer for ProService Hawaii’s Client HR Training Program and Management Certification Program, Lori is excited for the opportunity to share best practices with you regarding how to effectively recruit, interview and onboard new employees into your organization.

THE LANDSCAPE INDUSTRY CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN (LICT) PROGRAM; PAST, PRESENT AND FUTUREHow the CLT / LICT program got established in Hawaii and its impact on the landscape industry; the components of the test and how it challenges and measures the skills of landscape technicians; the state-wide training programs in place to upgrade the skills of landscapers seeking certification; and the future growth of the program. Emphasis will be placed on the Hire a Professional marketing campaign by LICH to promote to Landscape Architects, Property Managers, and the general public the advantages of contracting with landscape companies that have Landscape Industry Certified Technicians (LICTs) on staff.

SPEAKER: GARRETT WEBBGarrett Webb, Landscape Industry Certified Manag-er-Exterior (LICM), submitted the Employment Training Fund Grant with the Hawaii State Department of Labor in 1999, which provided funds for the develop-ment of a training program for landscapers preparing

for the first Certified Landscape Technician Test given in Kona in

2000. Garrett is presently the LICH State Administrator for the Landscape Industry Certified Technician program.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PLANT FOR THE RIGHT PLACEWhen selecting plants for landscapes, we usually think about what people need from the landscaping but sometimes forget about what the plants need. This presentation will cover issues such as sun/shade exposure, soil texture and pH, drainage, water sources and quality, soil volume, and salt exposure from the soil and water. Microclimates within a site will also be discussed as well as con-flicts with the built environment.

SPEAKER: CAROL KWANCarol Kwan has a diverse background having worked for many years in construction as an engineer before becoming a Certified Arborist in 2003 and starting her own business as a consultant for Carol Kwan Consult-ing. Her specialties include tree protection and preser-

vation plans, monitoring of trees during construction, arborist reports and recommendations, diagnosis, and tree risk assess-ments. She’s currently Director of Aloha Arborist Association and the Western Chapter International Society of Arboriculture.

SESSION 5: 3:35pm – 4:30pm

PESTICIDES AND POLLINATORSPollinators are an integral part of plant reproduction and care. Most pollinators in Hawaii are insects such as bees, butterflies and flies. Pesticides are powerful tools used in the landscape industry to control pests, including insects. This presentation will provide applicators with information about the types of pollina-tors in the state and simple, but practical, methods to minimize harm.

SPEAKER: STEVE RUSSOSteve Russo is an Environmental Health Specialist with the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. He conducts education and outreach for the Pesticides Program, assisting pesticide users with legal compli-ance. The Hawaii Department of Agriculture’s

Pesticide Program regulates the use of pesticides within the state. To help pesticide applicators comply with the law, Steve provides Restricted Use Pesticide exams, conducts classes for the regulated community and provides consultation services.

This session addresses the compliance and strategic aspects of the hiring process,

and Use of Recycled Water” in 1992, using recycled water for irriga-tion has been more of a regulatory approval challenge than a public perception challenge. However, better science and technologies have propelled recycled water use beyond irrigation as a safe and viable alternative water resource for indirect and direct potable water reuse in other parts of the country. As such, Hawaii was long overdue in overhauling its Guidelines requirements for using recycled water for irrigation. The review and overhaul of Hawaii’s recycled water Guide-lines started in 2013 and is targeted for completion in 2015.

SPEAKER: ELSON GUSHIKEN Elson Gushiken is a Vice President, ITC Water Manage-ment, Inc., established in 1978 offering planning, design-engineering consulting, construction services and operations and management services for landscape irrigation, agricultural irrigation, recycled water irrigation,

non-potable surface water irrigation, brackish water and sea water systems. Since 1992 - present, member, Hawaii Dept of Health committee for the “Guidelines for the Treatment & Use of Recycled Water” and current DOH Recycled Water Irrigation Committee Chair. Since 1994 - present, co-chair Hawaii Section AWWA & HWEA Joint Water Reuse Committee. Member, AWWA (American Water Works Association) national Water Reuse Committee. Member, WEF (Water Environment Federation) national Water Reuse Committee and contributing author, USEPA 2012 Guidelines for Water Reuse.

TREE RISK AWARENESS: WHAT THE LANDSCAPE INDUSTRY SHOULD BE AWARE OFWhat all landscape contractors, maintenance companies, property managers, landscape architect and tree care companies should be aware of when inspecting trees on property sites

SPEAKER: STEVE NIMZSteve Nimz is President of Steve Nimz and Associates Inc., a consulting company focusing on arborist services and specializing in tree risk assessments. He is an ISA Certified Arborist, ISA Tree Risk Assessor and Consulting Arborist, and Director Emeritus for the Landscape

Industry Council of Hawaii (LICH).

GETTING AHEAD OF THE PROBLEM OF INTENTIONAL INTRODUCTIONS TO KNOWN INVADERS: DEVELOPING A RESTRICTED PLANT LIST FOR HAWAIIThe Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species (CGAPS) seeks to work collaboratively with various industry stakeholders and develop a science-based approach to identify and document invasive plants not yet widespread in Hawaii, and to use the information to manage the pathway of intentional invasive plant introductions into and around the State. Noxious weed and invasive plant lists collected from each state and various countries were compared with the checklist of Hawaii’s naturalized plants to form a starting list of 1238 documented invasive plant species. Of these, 442 (36%) were found to be in the trade based on online horticultural databases, and have the potential of being distributed/ traded deliberately through commercial or private avenues. Some of these species are either widespread in Hawaii, or are considered regulated, leaving 275 spe-

cies which are being screened using the Hawaii Pacific Weed Risk Assessment (HPWRA). Once screening is complete, the resulting list and its supporting documentation will be shared with plant industry shareholders to form a final list for proposed restriction.

SPEAKERS: AMANDA SKELTON & DR. SHAHIN ANSARIAmanda Skelton has experience in the horticultural industry and has been a manager at both Kauai Nursery and Landscaping and Kauai Coffee Co. She currently works for the Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species (CGAPS), is the interim CTHAR Master

Gardner Coordinator, and lives on Kauai.

Dr. Shahin Ansari specializes in the ecology of invasive plants species. During her graduate work she helped develop and test the Hawaii Pacific Weed Risk Assess-ment and also served as the State’s first Weed Risk Assessment Specialist in 2006. She has been an ecologi-

cal consultant in the islands for over 10 years and has worked with clients from government and private sector on numerous natural resource projects. She is currently contracted by the Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species to develop a restricted plant list for Hawaii.

MORTARLESS SEGMENTAL PAVING: PAST, PRESENT, FUTUREBackground on what are segmental mortarless pavers (SMP), how to install SMP, the benefits of installing SMP, and how acquiring the skill set to install SMP can greatly benefit your business.

SPEAKER: AL GREENAl Green is a master of mortarless segmental and porous paving systems, having taught approximately 20,000 contractors, landscapers and homeowners around the country on proper installation technique. His work started in the early ‘80s as a part-time installer

before becoming a full-time residential and commercial contractor in the 90’s. He has installed both concrete pavers and natural stone pavers, in both mortar set as well as sand set. Al became a certified Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) installer in 1998, and has since received advanced ICPI training. 8 YEARS OF RESEARCH H-1 UNIVERSITY AVENUE, WHAT LANDSCAPERS PROFESSIONALS MUST KNOWOver the past 25 years, interest in and use of native Hawaiian plants in urban landscapes has greatly increased due to the growing awareness about the threats of invasive species, increasing interest in native Hawaiian cultural practice and the passage of two Endangered Species Acts by the Hawaii State Legislature (Acts 73 and 236). Although a number of native Hawaiian plants are now used in landscaping, there is still a huge vacuum on effective establishment, weed control and landscape maintenance protocols for these species. This lack of horticultural knowledge has often led to failure and poor performance of native Hawaiian plants in a number of urban landscape installations. In 2006, University of Hawaii researchers under grants funded by the Hawaii Department of Transportation initiated native Hawaiian plant re-vegetation research at the H1-University Avenue. Native plant research that have been conducted or is currently being conducted on site focuses on the development of roadside site preparation, planting (i.e. hydromulch/hydroseeding technologies, plugs), weed control, seed/nursery production and landscape maintenance techniques for a number of native Hawaiian grasses and shrubs. Eight years of research resulted in the development of protocols for Mau‘u ‘aki‘aki (Fimbristylis cymosa), ‘Aki‘aki (Sporobolus virginicus), Pili grass (Heteropogon contortus), Emoloa (Eragrostis variabilis), Kamanomano (Cenchrus agrimonioides var. agrimonioides) and Kakonakona (Panicum torridum). In the next two years, research studies will be conducted to develop protocols for six native Hawaiian shrubs. Through the development of these species-spe-cific protocols, we hope to enable widespread and effective use of native Hawaiian plants in urban landscapes.

SPEAKER: DR. ORVILLE BALDOS PHDDr. Orville Baldos is a researcher at the Department of Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences, University of Hawaii at Manoa. His current research is on the development of seed production, seed treatment and roadside estab-lishment protocols for several native Hawaiian grasses

and shrubs.

SUE (SUBSURFACE UTILITY ENGINEERING) AND YOU OR WHY SUE?According to the Federal Highway Administration, which is an agency within the US Department of Transportation, each dollar spent on Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) during design, returns as much as $7-$8 in total project savings. It will help to induce a faster design by having a correct map of all the utilities within a project that will allow for a faster and more economical design. Reliable utility data eliminates surprises and an informed design team can make better decisions and will be able to com-plete their project quicker. It will help lower the total project cost as SUE will more than pay for itself with the time and money saved from better design before construction. With reliable data, the designer can plan around existing utilities and virtually eliminate redesign in the field and avoid change orders with unexpected utility conflicts.

SPEAKER: PAUL VIERLINGPaul Vierling has served as General Manager with Hawaii Geophysical Services, LLC (HGS), a subsurface utility engineering (SUE) firm specializing in locating and mapping utilities and other anomalies. For the past 10 years Paul has led a small core group that uses

electromagnetic locators (EM), ground penetrating radar (GPR) and non destructive vacuum excavating equipment to give precise horizontal and vertical location of utilities to safely expose, measure and map utilities at crucial conflicting areas. HGS has worked on several large projects including Honolulu Rail, Honolulu Sea Water and Air Conditioning as well as many military and larger private development projects.
