1. PURPOSE:

To provide a documented procedure for Painting, White washing, polishing.

3. RESPONSIBILITIES

Civil Engineer:

Shall report to the Resident Construction Manager and shall be responsible for Preparation of work schedule addressing specific issues and characteristics of each spread.

Overall control and safety management and for the implementation of procedure and supervises the activity.

Generation of reports during the activity.

Explaining all other persons involved in erection and installation of the detailed operations to be done during the activity.

Preparing list of materials / sanitary fittings / pipes along with class and make and got approved from engineer in charge.

QC ENGINEER:

Reports to site QA/QC In-Charge

Ensures proper implementation of this procedure.

4. PROCEDURE:i) Materials shall be highest grade products of well known approved manufacturer

and shall be delivered to the site in original sealed containers bearing brand name, manufacturer's name, and colour/shade, with labels intact and seal unbroken.

ii) All materials shall be subject to inspection, approval by GAIL/MECON, All paint shall be subjected to analysis from random samples taken at site from painters bucket.

iii) All primer coats shall be compatible to the material of the surface to be finished as well as to the finishing coats to be applied.

iv) All unspecified materials such as shellac, turpentine or linseed oil shall be of the highest quality available and shall conform to the latest Indian Standards.

v) All colors shall be as per painting/finish schedule and tinting and matching shall be done to the satisfaction of GAIL/MECON

vi) SYNTHETIC ENAMEL PAINT shall be made from synthetic resins and drying oil with futile titanium dioxide and other selected pigments to give a smooth, hard, durable and glossy finish to all exterior and interior surfaces. White and pastel shades shall resist yellowing and darkening with aging. The paint shall conform to IS: 2932 and IS: 2933

vii) All surfaces shall be free from all oil, grease, efflorescence, mildew, loose paint or other foreign and loose materials. Masonry cracks shall be cleaned out and patch filled with mortar similar to the original surface and uniformly textured.

viii)Metal surfaces shall be absolutely clean, dry and free from wax, grease or dried soap films. All steel and iron surfaces in addition shall be free from rust. All galvanized iron surfaces shall be pretreated with a compatible primer.

ix) The method of application shall be as recommended by the manufacturer. In case of selection of special shades and color (not available in standard shades) the contractor shall mix different shades and prepare test panels of minimum size

1 meter square as per instruction of GAIL/MECON and obtain his approval prior to application of finishing paints.

x) Proper tools and implements shall be used. Scaffoldings if used shall be independent of the surface to be painted to avoid shade differences of the freshly repaired anchor holes.

xi) No painting shall be done when plastering is in progress or is drying. Application of paint, which seals the surface to moisture, shall only be done after the moisture on and the base surface has dried out.

xii) All coats shall be thoroughly dry before being sand papered or before the succeeding coat is applied.

xiii)Surface to be coated with cement paint shall be washed and brushed down. xiv) Preliminary trial of color and proportions shall be carried out and approval

obtained from the customer. After approval, the whole batch to be used on any surface shall be prepared in one stage in order to avoid color variation.

xv) Painting to steel surfaces, steel structure, GI rivets, timber shall conform to the specifications in the tender document. Each coat shall be carefully and evenly applied

WHITE WASHING

The surface to be thoroughly cleaned of all dusts, dirt’s, mortar dropping and other foreign matters before white wash is to be appliedAll damage portions of surface plaster to be removed to full plaster in rectangular patches and plastered again after raking the joints in masonry properly such portion to be wetted and allowed to dry before operation. All holes, cracks, patches etc not exceeding 0.1 sq.m in area will be made good with material similar to the Similar to that of the surface. Surface affected with efflorescence shall be treated in accordance with IS 2395. White washing shall also conform to the specification in the tender document.

Preparation of white wash

The fat lime forming to IS 712 to be mixed and stirred with about 5 liters of water of 1 kg of unslaked lime to make thin cream. It will be allowed to stand for 24 hours and then to be each cubic meter of coarse cloth, 4 kg of gum dissolved in hot water to be added to each cubic meter of lime cream. Above solution to be stirred thoroughly before use.

APPLICATION

White wash to be applied with Brush to the specified number of coats. The operation consist of stroke of brush from top to downward another from the down to upward over the same stroke. Coats shall be allowed to dry before the next coat is applied. The white washing on ceiling should be done prior to that on walls.

POLISHING

The surface to be polish shall be rubbed down to smoothness with sand paper and shall be well-dusted pores in the surface to be filled up with fillers. A pad of woolen cloth covered by fine cloth to be used .The pad shall be moistened with polish and rubbed hard on the surface.

PAINTING

Painting shall be applied by brushing or spraying. The-brushing operations are to be adjusted to the spreading capacity advised by the manufacture. During painting, every time after the painting has been worked out of the brush bristle, the bristle shall be opened up by striking the brush suitably. Painting shall also conform to the specifications in the tender document.

OIL BOUND DISTEMPER

Two coat of wall putty (J.K. / BIRLA) shall be applied on all plasterd wall surface evenly. The surface should be sound and be cleaned thoroughly. Remove all dirt, dust, moulds and mortar droppings from the surface by washing and scraping. The surface should be rubbed down with fine grade sand paper for smoothneess. Apply a coat of alkali resistant primer paint and allow drying for at least 48 hours if oil bound distemper is done on newly plastered surface. Use distemper primer and oil bound distemper of same brand. Make use of 15 CM double bristle distemper brush.

On dry plaster surface, priming coat should be applied with distemper primer which is of same brand as oil bound distemper is made of. On wet plastered surface prepare mix of oil bound distemper clean the container with warm and soapy water before mixing the solution. Mix appropriate quantity of water and distemper. Add water about 0.5 to 0.65 liters per Kg. to thick paste of distemper slowly as oil bound distemper is available in thick paste form. Add pigment according to the required color and shade. Apply oil bound distemper.

In case of any conflict between the requirements of this procedure and that of above referred specification, and then requirements of the later shall govern, until and unless specific intention is meant.
