I can’t believe its December. I distinctly remember our great winter season and April, May and June. The parades, ice-cream socials and golf trips to Sebring were a fun time in summer. But, what happened to September, October and November - they flew by, did I miss them? It’s Christmas time in Del Tura. There’s trees to trim and colored lights to string. Time to rush to our new Publix for flour, butter and cinnamon, there’s cookies to bake! I’ve got presents to buy and oh my, making that choice could cause so much commotion. Nothing of leather, nothing of fur, nothing that might be construed to pollute, aim or shoot will be considered. Nothing that’s gender specific or makes lots of noise - gifts that will satisfy each group of people - adult and child. Something special I have to have, a gift to give without angering the left or the right is what I’ll need. I’ll keep thinking as I write… about a gift that’s just right. For now, I’m disheveled, perplexed and confused. What gift can I give that will satisfy all? Make sure you get your tickets for New Year’s Eve. The band is Taking Care of Business and tickets are only $15. Tickets go on sale Tuesday December 15. This is a great band and one that I know you will enjoy. Mark your calendar for Saturday, January 19, not only do we have a professional show that night but our annual Health Fair takes place from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. that day. Monday, Dec. 3 at 7:00 p.m. is our annual Christmas Tree Lighting. It marks the start of our beautiful holiday season. You are in for a wonderful treat this year. Jacqueline Keen and her band of merry actors will be presenting the Naivety, the meaning of Hanukah, and the Christmas Carol. As always, we will have cookies

and punch. This is a wonderful way to kick off the Holiday season. You don’t want to miss this special evening. Tickets go fast so don’t miss out. (Thank you Jackie and Richard for all the hard work - it’s the best ever.) Don’t forget to pay your dues to join the HOA. Only members of HOA may purchase tickets the first day they go on sale. Many of our special events sell out early---so don’t miss out. It’s only $12 to join and you also receive “The Tower” magazine 10 times a year. This is a deal that can’t be beat! While you’re paying your HOA dues, why not join the FMO at the same time. This important organization is our eyes and ears in Tallahassee. Without the FMO we would not have Florida Statute 723. Can you believe that Marlene DeGraaf, Chairperson of our Welcome Committee and her volunteers have visited 32 new home owners since July. All new home owners receive a basket of goodies, a Welcome Booklet and they are invited to attend an afternoon social get together (held twice a year). Thank you Marlene and your committee for making our new residents feel welcome and part of this wonderful community. I hope to take that first shovelful of dirt for the wall before the first of the New Year. As I write this article, Hometown has cleared the first area where the wall is to go. It’s hard to believe after so many years but the wall is about to become a reality. So many people over the years have worked to make this happen. A celebration will be planned and everyone is invited. Well I think I have the gift for everyone, its price beyond worth… May you and your loved ones, enjoy peace on Earth. See you at coffee. I wish to sincerely thank all my family, friends and neighbors here in Del Tura, Long Island and Buffalo, NY for all your prayers, phone calls, visits, cards and gifts and to FISH for their delicious dinner while recuperating from my Lung operation. It is so wonderful to know how loved and cared about I am. A special thank you to Ellen Cox, who has been there daily for me. Love to all of you, Lorna Callan

Bake Sale Thank You Dear Del Tura Friends, Thank you so much for all the homemade baked goods you donated and thank you to all the buyers who bought them. I would also like to thank the buyers who also made cash donations. Most of all, thank you to all my helpers. I could not have done it without your help. The money we made ($482.00) was donated to the Thanksgiving and Christmas charity baskets for needy families. Thank you again, Toni DiBernardo

“CHOICES” is the Lee Memorial Health System Program that enables seniors to remain independent and in their own home as long as possible. This wonderful Program will be available in Del Tura starting Tuesday, Nov. 6. Professionals will man the office (next to the HOA office) every Tuesday morning from 10:00 a.m. until noon. If we find there is a need for them to be here longer, they will increase the hours and/or days of the program. Many of our residents live alone, have no family in the area, or just need a little additional help. They want to stay independent in their home in Del Tura. With a Choices advocate, family and physician input and most of all ---with the residents input,a care plan will be developed. It can be as simple as needing someone to accompany them to physician appointments and report to families. A complete medical, social, safety and nutritional evaluation will be completed and needed services obtained. They can arrange for in-home services such as caregivers, laundry, housekeeping, meal preparation, and even installation of grab bars or other assistive devices. They can coordinate the delivery of medications, meals, medical equipment, Lifeline health alert devices and any other needed items. Do you have a neighbor who lives alone, has family out of the area, has experienced

recent hospitalizations, may have some memory impairments, needs someone to occasionally check on him or her but wants to be independent and continue to live in his or her own home? Come in and talk to a Choices professional. They can call the family or go to see the resident. They can help.We have a wonderful FISH Program in Del Tura. They provide a meal when you come home from the hospital; drive you to the doctor occasionally; and provide walkers, canes, and DME Equipment. But FISH is a temporary measure, if you need on-going assistance to remain in your home, Choices can help you. If you’ve been hospitalized and need assistance for even a month or two—they can arrange therapy, transportation to doctors, grocery, etc. FISH and CHOICES will work together to keep Del Tura residents safe, comfortable and independent in their own homes while communicating with family members who live all over the country. They provide peace of mind to those who care and love us. If you have questions or have a referral, stop by the Choices office on Tuesday mornings or call Dawn at 239-418-2900. Del Tura is the only community to offer this wonderful program to our residents. Lee Memorial and I worked several months to bring this program to you. If you need assistance of any kind—take advantage of it.

The second Professional Show sponsored by the Del Tura HOA is scheduled for January 19, 2013 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Clubhouse’s Starlight Ballroom. Ticket Sales will begin January 2, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. in the HOA office since there will be no Tuesday Morning Coffee on January 1. The ticket price is $16.00 per person and there is no refund. First day of sales is for HOA Members only. The headliners for the evening will feature HARLEY WORTHIT, a Branson, MO. comedian and KATIE BROOKS, an exciting young country western singer. Katie is not only a singer, but also writes music and songs!! Who knows, we might be treated to the next Taylor Swift in the making!!

Ticket sales will continue on January 8 and 15 at the Tuesday Morning Coffee. Plans are in the works for the HOA sponsored ANNUAL NEW YEAR’S EVE GALA!!!! We are welcoming back one of the most popular entertaining groups we have had at Del Tura. Taking Care of Business better known as T.C.B., will be playing our favorite songs from 8:00 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. There will be champagne at midnight to welcome in the New Year. The FISH medical storage trailer purchased used in 1999 is in dire need of repairs. The trailer a 10 X 40, has particleboard floors along with a vapor barrier that need to be pulled and replaced. The windows, doors, and roof also need to be replaced as they are leaking. If the trailer is not repaired, FISH will have to stop loaning medical equipment. This service is desperately needed in Del Tura. We service up to five requests a day. We appreciate any donations to help with our project. You may drop off your donation at the FISH table during Tuesday Morning coffee. Or Contact FISH at: 239-997-FISH * Dianne Colon 313-3824 * Rich Symes 731-1308 Respectfully submitted, FISH Board Members

It gives me great pleasure to announce that in addition to Neil Miller and myself, Rick Rudzik has agreed to work with us, delivering and picking up the returned medical equipment. I must make a plea to those of you in the community who have gotten equipment in the past and may no longer need it. Our program is a loan program. If a resident has a long term need for such items as wheel chairs or the 3-wheeled or 4-wheeled

walkers, Medicare may cover these with a doctor’s script. We want to make sure all our residents will have the equipment they need. It is difficult for me to tell those in need that we can’t deliver the equipment if we don’t have it. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Contact us as follows: Rich Symes 731-1308, Neil Miller 731- 3628, Rick Rudzik 543-3662, FISH 997-3474

This is an appeal to the residents of Del Tura who have fruit trees with fruit that they are not going to consume and would otherwise go to waste. I would like for you to notify me, Rick Rudzik (543.3662) or Sherry Plisch (567.0538) co-chair persons of this FISH endeavor: 1. That you have fruit that you would like picked. 2. What kind of fruit. 3. The date you would like the trees picked. 4. If you would like us to pick some for your own consumption.

We will pick your fruits and discard any “drops” to recycle for you. We have 24+ volunteers that make short work of clearing these trees and they are eager to go.

The fruit we pick will be delivered to area Soup Kitchens for their distribution and consumption within a few days of picking. We will also hang an official FISH sun catcher from your tree to show your neighbors and friends that you have donated to the cause of feeding the people in need. Times are tough and the demand for food is increasing, so anything we can do to help them will be greatly appreciated. One more thing; if there are trees that are being neglected (as far as picking is concerned) because there are absent residents – let us know so that we can contact the responsible party for permission to pick their fruit. Spread the word. Once again, please notify us when you have trees that are ready to pick. Sincerely, Rick

One of the FMO District leaders recently sent out an email addressing services we may offer to benefit our members. The email brought to mind something that may be of interest regarding the payment of Social Security benefits. Benefits from Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or another federal payment are generally paid monthly. Ninety percent (90%) of the people receiving those monthly benefits receive them electronically. The U.S. Department of Treasury has a rule that does away with paper checks for most federal benefit and non-tax payments by March 1, 2013. This rule includes not only Social Security and SSI, but with few exceptions, will include Veterans Affairs, Railroad Retirement Board, Office of Personnel Management benefits, and other non-tax payments. There are two methods of receiving your federal benefits electronically. The first, Direct Deposit of federal funds, has been successful and has proven to be easy, reliable and safe. In addition, the program saves money for the Dept. of Treasury and ultimately the taxpayer. With Direct Deposit, there is no paper, no physical transportation, and no postage. The funds are moved into your specified bank or credit union account in the form of an electronic transfer. Direct Deposit has been available since 1976. To switch from checks to Direct Deposit, an individual can sign up at the bank, credit union, or through Social Security. The second method, Direct Express® Debit MasterCard® card has been available since 2008, is issued by Dallas-based Comerica Bank as the Treasury Department’s financial agent. It is a prepaid debit card and electronic payment option for federal benefits that does not require a bank account, but the funds are FDIC-insured. Like other automated teller machine (ATM) debit cards, the Direct Express® Debit MasterCard® account is protected by a Personal Identification Number (PIN) for ATM withdrawals and for use at retail locations. The funds are deposited directly to the debit card account. The Direct Express® card is safe and more convenient than paper checks and provides the same cost savings as Direct Deposit. There are no sign up fees, no monthly account fees or overdraft fees, and the card can be used in the fifty United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam. There are additional options that will include a fee; an example is a monthly paper statement costing seventy-five cents per month. An individual may sign up online at www.godirect.org or call their local Social Security office for assistance or call the Treasury Electronic Payment Solution Contact Center at 1-800-333-1795. So, if you are one of the ten percent (10%) currently receiving your checks by mail, you have until March 1, 2013, to decide between either Direct Deposit or the Direct Express® Debit MasterCard®.

FMO By Betty Wright

When we were children, receiving gifts at holiday time, birthdays, or at any time made us very happy. As we matured, we realized that giving gifts results in making us happier than receiving them. We also realized that gifts do not have to be tangible or expensive. A gift of friendship or kindness is a gift treasured by the receiver. In today’s commercial world, gifts from the heart bring more happiness than what we give from our wallet. The recent passing of Betty Clark saddened us. Betty loved Del Tura so much that, after she and her late husband Charlie moved north, they missed it so much they returned to Del Tura. Betty spent a great deal of time making beautiful items in the ceramics room. On many evenings, she could also be found in the Pub listening to Charlie sing at karaoke. We will miss Betty. When we describe Anna Wilson (who recently celebrated her 90th birthday) as “hot stuff,” it may be because she was born on the same day that Mrs. Murphy’s cow started the famed Chicago fire! Anna can often be seen riding her bike when she isn’t involved in playing billiards, tennis, or bowling, singing in the Choralaires, overseeing Tower distribution etc., etc., etc. As Gloria Ellis recently told us, in spite of her full schedule, Anna is always there when a friend is in need. Happy 90th, Anna. You are a special gift to all your friends. Belated 106th birthday wishes to Josephine Rendo, a former Good Timers’ member and mother of Anna Incorvaia. She is an inspiration to us all. We celebrated the November birthdays of Lillian Klopp, Peg McTernan, Helen Stormer, and Millie Hanrahan at a performance of the musical version of “Miracle on 34th Street” at the Broadway Palm. We had wonderful seats thanks

to our hostess Louise Dodge, and the show and food were rated “5 stars.” At the November meeting, President Peg McTernan distributed a draft of the revised by-laws for review by the members. Discussion of the draft prepared by Peg and Revision Committee members Kathleen Quigley, Lynn Everett, Susan Savitt and Alice Harris will take place at the December meeting. Our December Holiday Party will be hosted by Good Timers’ officers at our Del Tura Restaurant on December 11 at 5:00 p.m. There will be a cocktail hour, Yankee swap, and the December birthdays of Alice Harris, Lynn Everett, Gloria Ellis, Serafina Goncalves, and Nancy Skorlinski will be celebrated. The dinner is no cost for members. If there are any questions regarding the dinner, please contact Peg at 543-3144. We also send birthday greetings to Betty Morris with whom we will miss celebrating this year. Some of us are already preparing our golf carts for the Holiday Golf Cart Parade starting at 6:00 p.m. on December 15 at the Clubhouse. It is a really enjoyable activity with a cocktail party before the parade. All residents are invited to attend. It is just BYOB and an appetizer to share. Who needs the Rose Bowl when you can participate in or watch the Del Tura Golf Cart Parade? Any questions, call me at 731-3355. Congratulations to Barbara Boyd for winning the Nine Hole Ladies’ Flight-A President’s Cup tournament. Swing on, Barb! We don’t often wish that a gift we give is returned, but this holiday season the Good Timers hope that the gift of friendship that you give to others is given back to you.

Today as I sat and began to think about the approaching holiday season my thoughts once again took me to places that are near and dear to my heart. Thoughts spurned by emotions, calm, reflective at the beginning and then suddenly as my thoughts wandered somehow back to my childhood years a sudden childlike excitement began to take over me…. a surge of tingling began running through my body. Suddenly, I was transformed back to that young girl with a sense of wonder…standing in front of a beautifully decorated storefront window. I was awe-struck! There stood a huge pine tree so stunningly decorated, each ornament symmetrically placed on each branch, sparkling lights twinkling the beautiful colors of Christmas. Holiday gifts festively wrapped with huge, shiny, bows that matched each package and placed so perfectly underneath its lower boughs. The next window featured Old Saint Nick, sitting on his huge gold chair holding a long scrolled list of all the good boys and girls that would be lucky enough to receive that one special gift this year. His eyes were twinkling and bright. His velvety, red suit was as red as his rosy red cheeks. As the elves prepared us for our very special talk with this jolly soul the excitement began to show on the faces of each child waiting in line to talk with Santa. Oh to keep this child-like wonder!!

All too soon …reality returned and as I pulled myself away from this beautiful experience I began to feel enlightened by the activities surrounding me... Carols were playing and shoppers were busy, bustling from one place to another, juggling their packages as they scurried by. Their moods were merry, and as I passed each of them I couldn’t help to feel the cheeriness of this very special time of year. As I turned the corner to head home I felt a surge of renewed energy. You know the kind that one gets when they surround themselves with the happiness of knowing that the holidays will bring families and friends together. Yes, we need to keep that feeling of happiness, and to make it so we realize that family and home are two very important factors of the holidays. No matter where we are our first thoughts are of family and being together to celebrate this special season. Although this is not always possible, our hearts will always connect with our loved ones. Coming home for the holidays can’t always mean in the physical sense…as we know. Our loved ones in the military wish it so…loved ones that we so desperately miss can’t always be with us. Throughout our childhood and adult lives we create memories that our families can take and keep with them wherever life may lead them. So when we are children and imagining with our childlike ways, we are actually creating a life of special memories

that will eventually help us through each passing year. So many memorable holiday moments! Every year our family gatherings seemed to grow larger and larger. In my mother’s words, “Everyone is family; no one should ever be alone, especially during the holidays! There’s always room for one more and plenty of food for all!” As I was growing up, I didn’t think that all those holiday gatherings would become the memories that would be the ones that would be the most memorable. The memories of family and our celebrations are what “built” me. Every family, every culture, has traditions that shape them… My most special memories include my parents, our children, and all those Christmas Eve’s that we spent together with family and friends; dancing, singing, going to Mass, Santa’s visits, preparing and eating the various ethnic foods. Sharing our love….eventually realizing that the lesson of the season was not in the receiving of material gifts, but most importantly in the giving of oneself! We were so blessed! As the years bring changes and holiday traditions are handed down to our children, we realize that the most important things in life are built around the heart of family. The most important gifts of the season we can give to each other are those that are felt within the heart. Wishing you all Peace, Hope, and Love throughout this holiday season.

Del Tura Golf and Country Club is a gated community, not a secured community. What is the difference? In secured communities, the entire perimeter of the community is enclosed, and security guards patrol the area. This is usually in addition to a gate and a guard at that gate. Del Tura has a gate and individuals who man the gate; but they are not guards nor are they responsible for the security of the community. The purpose of a gate in a community such as ours is to confirm that individuals entering the area have a legitimate reason for being here. The changes in pass uses and the tightening of the pass restrictions has been an effort to aid the gate staff in fulfilling that purpose. When there appears to be an infraction of our community rules and regulations, the resident may report the issue to the administrative office, during business hours. After hours, the gate may be notified of the issue. However, when possible, it is always best to notify the administration office during business hours because, in many cases, there is only one individual at the gate and that person may not leave to resolve an issue. In addition, notifying the office will

insure that an issue can be communicated directly to someone on the management staff who will be able to immediately address your concern. Also, the gate staff are not police officers nor are they security guards and they may have no authority to address or resolve an issue. In an emergency situation, such as fire, theft, concern for your safety or the safety of others, as with the recent incident where a rabid fox

was spotted, then it is best to notify the government agency with jurisdiction. Usually one of the agencies, such as the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, the North Fort Myers Fire Department or the Lee County Animal Services, will assist you or provide additional information to assist you. Please keep in mind that the gate

staff, the Hometown Rover and the Hometown maintenance staff are generous with their time and make every effort to accommodate resident needs, but they are limited in number. These individuals may assist with infractions of our rules and regulations, but in a real emergency, it is best to place a call to the government agency with jurisdiction.

As I write this on November 11, we completed week three of shuffleboard in our 2012-2013 season. All of us snowbirds are back so we have the full complement of 20 teams playing once again. Had a beautiful day again to play this past Friday. Not overly hot, but the sun felt so good and we had a nice breeze too. Perfect weather we would say. Our standings after three weeks of playing are as follows. The “A” flight leaders are: Janet Reinen/Jack Blevons in 1st with a 9/0 record, followed by Doris Thurber/Pete Slusarski at 8/1, with Bob Crawford/Ben Hargraves and Mary Kay/Glenn Tointon tied for 3rd at 7/2. The “B” flight leaders are: Donna Crawford/Len Fleming in 1st with 8/1; followed by Stan Peters/Don Mummert at 6/3; and three teams tied for 3rd, Mary Pimental/Carol Vigilante, Mollie Brown/Ellen Slusarski and Roger/Debbie Lattimer all at 5/4. I have one comment to make about this weeks play, I’ve been playing here for over 10 years and have never seen a game end like the game between last year’s Tournament winners Glenn and Mary Kay Tointon and good friends Glenn and Diane Camp with Tointon beating Camps by a score of MINUS 21 to MINUS 27! How about that for a final score of a match? Must have been a whole lot of “kitchen” shots in that game!! Anyhow, I’m sure I speak for all of us, that it’s great to be back playing again. We have a great bunch of people playing. The competition is always

keen as we play our three games every Friday but more than anything else, the camaraderie with all our friends is what makes our league so much fun playing. This is the 9th year that I have been running the league, growing over the years from about eight to nine teams to our present twenty. We also have quite a list of people who enjoy subbing for regulars when they are needed, which is just about every Friday. They have been pretty regular year –to-year also, and as I have said before, a very important part of our league. We want to add subs at the present time. We can’t add any more full-time teams as we are full at twenty, but I am keeping the names of those who mentioned to me they would like to be a regular team. When an opening happens, you will certainly be called. This year we added three new full teams as people do drop out either for health issues or they move out of the area. In closing, Janet and I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We all have a lot to be thankful for, as we see and hear how others less fortunate than us have to live. We also want to wish everyone a Blessed Christmas and a happy holiday season. Most of you know that Janet and I always decorate our house and yard outside for all of your enjoyment, so please take the time to drive by at night to see our home. We do it for all of you and your grandkids that come to visit. We usually have it all up by Thanksgiving Day.

Bucket hats were all over the three Del Tura golf courses on a beautiful southwest Florida November day. On Saturday, November 3, a total of 136 golfers were given a “bucket hat” to wear in the “Bucket Hat Open” scramble honoring the life and passing of friend, Dave Bilodeau. The hats were provided to all of the golfers by Gail Ventura and her sister Karen Glastal and were given to emulate Dave’s favorite headwear. One of Dave’s passions was youth golf and he had requested that the event would be a benefit for this charity. The tournament committee acting on this request looked to help someone in Dave’s hometown of Salem, Massachusetts involved with youth golf. Each of the three golf courses held a separate tournament with one winning team and a closest to the pin individual identified and honored at a cookout sponsored by the Men’s Golf Association at the North Pool following the event. Team winners on the West course were Gail Ventura, Pat Clemons, Dave Lassard and Terry Kinzel with Kay Rolander getting closest to the pin. On the North course, Glenda and Tony Oliver teaming with Linda and Jerry Beiremann came out on top and Penny Mikesh was on

the pin. The South course winners were Bill Bouchard, Rich Codero, Jack Berling, Bob Smith and Jerry Butler knocking his shot closest to the stick. The real winner for the day, however, turned out to be Will Parr of Salem. Dave had the pleasure of meeting Will when he was a young golfer and found he has a most unique story. Will, now a senior at Salem High School and a member of the golf team, as a youngster was diagnosed with a disease that produces tumors throughout his body. To minimize the problems in his right leg, he had to have his leg amputated below the knee. Will continued to pursue the game of golf despite playing on one leg (no prosthesis) and currently is the number three man on the high school team. Will is also President of the Senior Class and has a GPA of just under 4.0. The committee was so impressed with this young man they wanted to help him in his pursuit of higher education. The entire proceeds (including all of the prize money won and generously donated back by the teams and individual winners) amounting to $4200.00 was donated to Will and his family to help alleviate some of his first year costs. A great day of golf thanks to golf’s friend, Dave Bilodeau.

Saturday, November 10, we presented the first of the four Professional Shows scheduled for the 2012-2013. It was disappointing not to have a full ballroom, but one would never had known it the way the Marlinaires entertained everyone who was there. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful music filled

evening. Jack Marlin and his daughter, Michelle and son, Chris, play a large assortment of music from the 1950’s to the present. On a bet from Michelle, Jack even showed us how he could play his fiddle ten different ways.

Medicare generally doesn’t cover health care while traveling outside the U.S. (the “U.S.” includes the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa). There are some exceptions including some cases where Medicare may pay for services that you get while on board a ship within the territorial waters adjoining the land areas of the U.S. Medicare may pay for inpatient hospital, doctor, or ambulance services you get in a foreign country in the following rare cases: 1. You’re in the U.S. when an emergency occurs and the foreign hospital is closer than the nearest U.S. hospital that can treat your medical condition. 2. You’re traveling through Canada without unreasonable delay by the most direct route between Alaska and another state when a medical emergency occurs and the Canadian hospital is closer than the nearest U.S. hospital that can treat the emergency. 3. You live in the U.S. and the foreign hospital is closer to your home than the nearest U.S. hospital that can treat your medical condition, regardless of whether an emergency exists. Medicare may cover medically-necessary ambulance transportation to a foreign hospital only with admission for medically-necessary covered inpatient hospital services… Urgently-Needed Care – Medicare covers urgently-needed care to treat a sudden illness or injury that isn’t a medical emergency… Check your policy before you go to see if it offers coverage outside of the U.S. so you know in advance how an emergency will be covered. Typically, Supplement (or Medigap) Plans C, D, F, G, M & N offer foreign travel benefits, as do many Advantage Plans. If foreign coverage is not offered, you may wish to look into a travel policy.(Taken from the 2012 Medicare & You Handbook, page 52)

IT’S HUGE!!!!!!!! Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you!!!!! It’s true!! Del Tura is the nicest, friendliest place to live! I know you are thinking of the upcoming holiday, but I want to take you back to OCTOBER....Breast Cancer Month. As I sit here, reflecting on all that was done by so many people since our Making Strides Against Cancer Kick-off on August 17, I am in awe. There were so many hard-working folks that made our campaign a HUGE success by passing out the contribution envelopes,

donating items for our basket raffles, helping at the All Star Lanes bowling event, helping at the three Tuesday Coffees, collecting and counting all the donation envelopes, getting the sized tee-shirts and passing them out before the walk. I especially want to thank my right hand, Linda Schoonmaker, our computer whiz. She got everyone registered on line, constantly updated the information, verified all the money and made many trips to the American Cancer Society. Thank you, too, to Maryann Hoder, who chaired our bowling event which

raised $2,090. Another thank you goes out to Sandy Rolando for all the help with the raffle baskets and their lovely bows. I can’t go on without thanking my husband, Rich, who has been with me every way in my journey and in our strides to find a cure. Last but not least, I want to thank the hundreds of you who donated to the campaign and who helped us to raise a HUGE total of: $20,393.01. I am so grateful and blessed. There is no finish line until there is a cure … We’re not going to give up!!!

HEALTH NEWS

Walking is the number one type of activity that can make a difference in your health and wellness. Try these suggestions: Park a distance from the grocery store and walk a little farther on purpose. Take the stairs whenever possible. Walk the dog twice a day around the block. No dog? Walk yourself around the block twice. When indoors, get up from the chair and walk

around the room every time there is a commercial on TV. Join a group or ask a friend to exercise with you at the Exercise Room. Recommendation: 30-60 minutes of moderate exercise three times a week. Ride a bicycle. Dance, sing and be joyful. Briskly walk around a Mall or enclosed air-conditioned building for thirty minutes.

Tura Zumba/Dance celebrated Halloween, dancing and jiving to Monster Mash.. .Ghost Busters...Thriller. Join in the Tura Zumba/Dance fun on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 9:30 am (please arrive at 9:15) in the Main (Starlight) Ballroom.

Painting, writing, and teaching are the three fields that JOAN JOHNSON of Las Palmas Boulevard has devoted her time and energies to during most of her lifetime, and she has excelled in all of them. Joan grew up in Norwalk, CT and earned her B.A. in English from Bethany College in West Virginia. She then earned a Masters in American Civilization from the University of Pennsylvania, another in Communications from Fairfield University, and was awarded a sabbatical to complete additional graduate courses in gifted education at Columbia University. During the years Joan taught high school English in Ipswich, MA and English and the Gifted Program in Darien, CT she developed a training film for teachers of gifted students and another on creative problem solving. She was awarded a grant both to attend the World Conference on the Gifted in Hamburg, Germany and to visit gifted programs in Germany and Denmark. Additionally she served as a National Humanities Faculty consultant to the Florence, SC public schools and mentored students and first-year teachers for the State of Connecticut. While on summer vacations, she somehow found the extra time to write young adult non-fiction books for publishers Franklin Watts and Henry Holt. Her six books deal with social issues ranging from cults to the children of welfare. Her seventh book, however, was a complete change of pace. Published in 2006, PANDEMIC is a work of fiction written with the help of consultant Dr. William Rose. It is a medical thriller that follows the growth of the avian flu from its roots in Thailand to a small fictional town in Massachusetts threatened by the lethal virus. In addition to writing, Joan has always had a great interest in all art mediums. She began painting with watercolors when she retired from teaching in 2003, taking private art lessons and classes at the Worcester Art Museum. She also has become adept at the computer programs Painter and Adobe Photoshop, and uses a Wacom tablet and a stylus to create computer-generated drawings, cartoons, and “paintings.” In 2009, she illustrated the history book THE SPIRIT OF PHILLIPSTON (shown in the picture) using these programs. Joan is especially eager to meet other Del Turians interested in watercolor painting and has scheduled a weekly workshop in the Craft Room to begin meeting on THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, FROM 1:30 TO 4:30 p.m. (See announcement in this issue of “THE TOWER”.) Members of the group will spend that time working on their own paintings and at the end critique other members’ works. In addition to her busy career, Joan also raised two sons. She is now the proud grandmother of two grandsons, eleven and eight years old, who live in Manchester, CT. Having two sisters who winter in Naples, Joan was long familiar with our area. In July 2011, she came to investigate the

Florida 55+ communities she had researched on the Internet. Because one morning she was early for an appointment at one of the parks just to our north, she decided to stop at Del Tura and was impressed with the neighborhoods she saw here. As Del Tura looked like such a wonderful place to live, she purchased Babe and Bob Schwartz’ house. At the moment she is living here only from October through May but anticipates she will reside here full-time in the future. Although she moved here only last November, Joan has already joined the Singles Club and plays bridge on both Wednesdays and Fridays. Choral music was something she hadn’t really been able to participate in for many years but now she has found the Choralaires and thoroughly enjoys singing with them. She gets her daily exercise by taking Phoebe Magnolia, her two and a half year-old Standard Schnauzer, to the Dog Park on Judd Road. What a great addition to our Del Tura community this very talented lady has become.

This is a story of “small town makes good” as shown in twelve Christmas experiences.Mike grew up in miniscule Hope, Arkansas, where he and his sister were raised in a humble family setting where money was sparse but love abounded. His parents struggle and sacrifice to buy him a $99.00 guitar from the JC Penney Christmas catalogue helped him overcome his shyness when he was obligated to play in front of an audience with his Beatle era band. This musical ability has carried over to his Fox talk show where he plays guitar with the house band. His reverence for Christmas tradition with his expression, “you know mom, the way you always do it,” was exemplified as well when he and his father annually traipsed through the woods to find the perfect Christmas tree. Mike and Janet were married at age eighteen and soon after she was diagnosed with spinal cancer. His abiding faith saw them through to a lasting remission. Their marriage was wrought with meagerness as Mike strived in Baptist

theology. Janet and Mike defied the cancer experts who said pregnancy was not an option because of radiation therapy and they already had three biological children. Mike continued to struggle with the pressures of family, seminary and his menial job with a nationally known evangelist. This destitution was shown when he sold his beloved guitar to buy a washing machine for their new one-thousand square foot house. Ultimately Mike became a successful and innovative pastor of a Baptist church in Texarkana, Arkansas. His success took him to the presidency of the Baptist Convention and ultimately to a hidden desire to enter politics, which he heretofore had felt to be in conflict with the church. He wanted to set a new agenda for children and the community and went on to become the long-term governor of Arkansas. The next plateau took him on a fifteen-month campaign trail for the United States Presidency. Where else but in America!

Our goal is to have them feel at home in Del Tura by telling how to get involved in the many activities provided during the week and how to find out about the events that occur once a month or once a year. We want them to know the importance of joining FMO, HOA, and FISH. Since everything in Del Tura is done by volunteers we encourage them to use their talents to get involved. There have been many new residents for whom we have not received any information; therefore, if you have not been visited or if you hear of anyone who has not yet met with a committee member contact any member on the list below. We plan on having new

resident get-togethers during the year in order to try to reach every one. Marlene DeGraaf

Now that everyone is arriving back to Del Tura, I thought I’d give you an update on our Ceramic Club. We are open for business and hope it will be another great season. Our hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to about 1:30 p.m. This is a great way to spend a morning. Before you know it, the holiday season will be upon us and we thought it would be an excellent idea to run a “Holiday Workshop.” Anyone wishing to make a Christmas tree is invited to our class which will be held on Monday, December 10, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Instruction is free and all supplies (tree, paint, brushes etc.) will be on hand in the Ceramics Room located across from the Pro Shop. We simply need you to come in and sign up by Thursday, December 6, 2012. This class is just the one day and your tree will be ready for you to pick up on Wednesday,

December 12. The Ceramics Room is a great space! We have many wonderful artists from novice to exceptional and we will teach whoever wants to join us and have some fun. There are tons of projects to choose from to do, from outside artwork and pieces such as animals, dolls, planters, vases, holiday décor and more. The list is endless. We have two great suppliers and loads of books to choose projects from as well. We hope you will come and join us for some fun, good conversation and a relaxing time. If you have any questions about the workshop or in general, please call our president, Janet Ragone, at 543-7818 or email her at [email protected]. Hope to see you soon and welcome back to Del Tura. Dianne Bevilaqua, Treasurer.

News From The Ceramics RoomBy Dianne Bevilaqua

Interested in watercolors? Need motivation to get started or keep going? The best encouragement can come from other artists struggling along the same path. Join us in the Craft Room Thursday afternoons from 1:30 to 4:30 beginning December 13th. We’ll paint and share our techniques, even

critique each other’s works if asked, but mostly we’ll just enjoy working together while we learn more about this fascinating medium. It’s a free, no obligation way to build your own skills and stay motivated. Call Joan Johnson, 239-217-0284 for more information.

Edward Jones, its employees and investment representatives do not offer estate- planning, tax or legal advice.

Time for Year-end review of Your financial STraTegY?Now that 2012 is drawing to a close, you may want to review the progress you’ve made this past year in many areas of your life — including your financial situation. By going over your investment portfolio and other key areas related to your finances, you can learn what moves you may need to make in 2013 to stay on track toward your important objectives, such as college for your children, a comfortable retirement and the ability to leave the type of legacy you desire.

To get a clear picture of where you are, consider asking yourself these questions:

• Am I taking on too much risk? Although 2012 has generally been a pretty good year for investors, we’ve certainly seen periods of considerable volatility. During these times, did you find yourself constantly fretting about big drops in your portfolio value? In fact, have you consistently experienced this type of worry throughout your years as an investor? If so, you might be taking on too much risk for your individual risk tolerance. Review your holdings to determine if you can lower your risk level without jeopardizing your overall investment strategy.

• Am I investing too conservatively? Just as you can take on too much investment risk, you can also go to the other extreme by investing too conservatively. If your portfolio contains a preponderance of investments that offer significant preservation of principal but very little in the way of growth potential, you may be endangering your chances of accumulating the resources you’ll need to achieve your long-term goals.

• Am I contributing as much as I can afford to my retirement plans? If you have access to an employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b), consider yourself fortunate. Your plan has the potential to grow on a tax-deferred basis, and you typically contribute pre-tax dollars — the more you put in, the lower your annual taxable income. Plus, your employer may match part of your contributions. So if you’ve been under-funding your retirement plan, ratchet up your funding in 2013. At the same time, you may still be eligible to contribute to an IRA; if so, try to “max out” on it. A traditional IRA grows tax deferred while a Roth IRA can grow tax free, provided you meet certain conditions.

• Am I adequately protecting my income — and my family? Over time, you’ll experience many changes in your life — marriage, children, new job, new home, etc. Most, if not all, of these changes will require you to make sure you have adequate life insurance in place to help guard your family’s future, should anything happen to you. Furthermore, to help replace your income should you become disabled, you may well need to purchase an adequate amount of disability income insurance.

• Do I need professional help? As the above questions indicate, maintaining control of your financial situation can be challenging — especially if you try to do it all on your own. You might benefit from working with a financial professional — someone who can analyze your situation objectively and make recommendations based on your risk tolerance, time horizon and specific goals.

Before the clock runs out on 2012, take the time to ask yourself the above questions. The answers may well spur you to take positive action in 2013.

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all over town,No noses were frozen, no snow fluttered down.No children in flannels were tucked into bed,They all wore their shorty pajamas instead. To find wreaths of holly was not very hard,For holly trees grew in most every backyard. In front of the houses were daddies and moms,Admiring their shrubbery and coconut palms. The slumbering kiddies were dreaming in glee,And hoped they’d find water skis under the tree. They all knew that Santa was well on his way,In a Mercedes-Benz instead of a sleighAnd soon he arrived and started to work,He hadn’t a second to linger or shirk. He whizzed up the highways and zoomed up the roads,In his shiny new sports car delivering his loadsThe tropical moon gave the city a glow,

And lighted the highway for Santa belowAs he jumped from the auto he gave a wee chuckle,He was dressed in Bermudas with an Ivy League buckle. There weren’t any chimneys, but that caused no gloom,For Santa had come through the Florida room.He stopped at each house but stayed only a minute,And emptied his sack of stuff that was in itAnd before he departed he treated himself,To the glass of orange juice left on the shelf. Then he turned with a jerk and back to the car,Remembering he still had to go far.He shifted the gears and stepped on the gas,And up 41 he went like a flash. But I heard him exclaim as he went on his way,“Merry Christmas North Fort Myers, I wish I could stay.”
