Air-Rail Links Under Construction at Italian
Airports
Once completed, in 2017, the intermodal hub will improve accessibility to the airport from its whole catchment area, giving air travellers the possibility to arrive at the airport by train and will also facilitate the modal shift from private vehicles to train and bus, persuading commuters to leave their car at the airport, thus giving effective incentive to “park & ride” policy. Thanks to this new facility Trieste air-port will be one of the eight Italian airports directly connected to the railway network and the first one within a 350-kilometre radius covering North-eastern Italy, Slovenia, North-western Croatia and Southern Austria.

Milan Malpensa AirportMXP-AT RailinkThe construction of the new rail link between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at Malpensa Airport is currently underway.
This project is developed through a partnership between SEA and Ferrovie Nord Milano, with financial contributions from Italy’s Ministry for Infrastructure and Transport and the Lombardy Region, and a 20% co-funding from the European Union.
This new link, the first phase of the TEN-T (Trans-European Transport Networks) project called “Accessibility to Malpensa from the North”, is a fundamental step towards further connecting Malpensa to the rest of Europe.
The T1-T2 link will considerably enhance the rail accessibility to Malpensa, specifically to Terminal 2, where flight traffic has constantly been on the rise, reaching 6 million passengers in 2013.
