July 12, 2018 Dear Parents and Students, I hope you are having a great summer and I know God’s favor and blessing will be clearly evident as you draw close to Him. This season is a great time to build family relationships and to enjoy some additional quiet time with the Lord. I would challenge you to be an example of God’s love to your children, spouse, family, and friends. God has ordained the Christian home as a foundation for the training and spiritual growth of children and we are humbled and truly blessed to partner with you in the molding and shaping of these young lives. Venice Christian School continues to stand strong in upholding its core values. We seek to be a lighthouse in this world allowing the Light of Christ to shine brightly. The world and its darkness are no match for the Splendor and Majesty of an all-powerful God. John 1:5 states “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”. (ESV) We desire to tell the story of a Savior who has overcome the world. I would like to share with you that we are expecting another record enrollment and we are anticipating the Lord working mightily in the lives of our VCS family. I would ask that you be thinking how you may serve the school through our volunteer program and most definitely through our prayer ministry. We do ask each family to provide 20 service hours every school year. Also, if you are interested in our Parent Teacher Fellowship, we have leadership opportunities there as well. Please refer to the enclosed PTF brochure for more information. Children’s World in Sarasota continues to be our uniform supplier. We are asking our parents to outfit their student in the proper uniform. Children’s World is located at 4525 Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota. Please take careful note of the additional information including teacher welcome letters, supply lists, and other important notices. Additional information will be sent before school begins on August 13
th.
PLEASE NOTE: Middle School and High School orientation will be held together in the gym on Thursday, August 9
th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
NOTE: Both new and returning students are REQUIRED to attend this informative meeting. Teachers in Pre-School through 5
th Grade will host an Open House in their rooms from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday,
August 10th. Opening day for the entire school will be on Monday, August 13
th.

Dear Students and Parents, Welcome! The summer break is in full swing and it is time to prepare for the new school year. We have an exciting school year planned. The teachers and administration have worked very hard to bring you the best curriculum with the highest standards yet to date. As the student population numbers go up, we have honed “up” our skills and are ready for the new task ahead. Attached is a list of supplies that you will need for Middle School. God bless you as you finish your summer vacation. On behalf of the entire staff, new and old, we look forward to seeing you soon. We are just a phone call or e-mail away.

BOOK BAGS Wheeled book bags are not allowed due to space constraints in the hallway and classrooms. Book bags MUST be dropped in the appropriate homeroom class bin during the day. We suggest a true book bag or cloth beach bags that can be folded. We are truly concerned about the health of your child’s back (1 lb. of books for every 10 lbs of a child’s weight). If you have the type of child who wants to bring home all his/her books every night, please see the teachers for strategies or you may want to purchase a second set of books to keep at home. CELL PHONES If your child brings a cell phone to school, he/she must surrender it to the homeroom teacher before first class period. Students may retrieve them at the end of the school day. Cell phones are not allowed to be in lockers. They are a disruption to the classroom and they are a major temptation. If a cell phone is found with a student or in his/her locker, it will be collected and turned in to the office and it will be released only to the parent. AGENDAS Communication is critical to a successful year at Venice Christian School. The primary means of communication between parents and teachers is the Agenda. Parents are requested to review and sign the Agenda each night. This will help instill good study and organizational skills which are keys to academic success. Students should keep their agenda in a consistent location so it will go home daily. FOOD, WATER AND MEDICINE Bottled water is allowed in the classroom and encouraged. We encourage you to eat a nutritious breakfast every morning because snack food items are restricted to lunchtime only.
No gum is allowed anywhere on campus per school policy. Please inform your teacher of any medical requirements/restrictions. Aspirin, cold medicine and other medications are not allowed in the classroom. Arrangements should be made with the office to store any prescription or over-the-counter medicines. Please update any doctor’s instructions for the new school year.
DRESS CODE 6th – 8th grade students wear the approved VCS uniform. See Mrs. Ross’ letter included concerning PE. Please consult the VCS Handbook for guidelines. All clothes are to be free of stains/wrinkles and worn with modesty in mind. Boys will not wear low-slung pants and girls will dress conservatively. Dresses and skirts should be no shorter than two inches above the middle of the knee (this includes P.E. shorts). OTHER CONSIDERATIONS No student should have hair color taken to extremes (i.e. purple or blond/black, etc.) Girls should not wear hairpieces. Boys’ hair should brush the top of their ears, not touch eyebrows and be above the shirt collar in the back. 6th – 7th grade girls do not wear makeup except for blemish cover-up and clear lip gloss. 8th grade girls may wear modest makeup, and light mascara. Black nail polish is not permitted. Girls will not wear dangling earrings/hoops that are longer or bigger than 1”. No necklaces with oversized beads or chains. Boys will not wear earrings, period. Mrs. Foust will be the final authority in matters of taste and appropriateness for dress and makeup (even if you don’t agree with her taste).

Middle School Art
Dear Venice Christian School Families,
I am so blessed to be teaching art to your children again this year. We will be having an excitingyear learning about different artists from around the world. We will all so do projects that reflectthe artists. I would like to note and thank the generous gift from the Ecart Foundation; we wereable to purchase a new curriculum to add to our Art Department.
Let me tell you a little bit about the classroom. There will be portfolios for each student organizedby individual classes. Most of the artwork is to remain in the art room until completed and then willbe displayed throughout the building during the year.
A project will typically run for 2 to 3 days. Some bigger projects will last longer. We begin with ademonstration (about 10-15 minutes) followed by an opportunity for the students to work on thegiven project at their pace. I give individual attention when needed. The last 5 minutes or so of theclass is dedicated to clean up. I expect all students to help out in one way or another.
Also, we will work on an artist report. Your student will pick a famous artist, past or present, anddo an oral report on the artist of their choice. They will also do a project that reflects the artistwork. This project includes doing portrait studies of the different “Master’s” paintings.
ALL students will work in a variety of mediums. Examples of the mediums we will be using include:Acrylics and tempera paints, watercolor, chalk pastel, oil pastel, collage work, resist, and pencil. Wewill be doing Sculpturing in different mediums. These are just some examples of what we will beusing but are not limited to during art each week.

Physical Education
Welcome to Venice Christian School and the PE department. I am Mrs. Ann Ross and I have
been teaching PE and directing the extracurricular athletic programs at VCS for the past 18
years. My husband Tom and I have two daughters, Becky and Ellen, who are VCS Alumni!
It is a blessing to work with all the students at VCS and I look forward to my time with your
children this year. In our PE activities we work hard challenging all students to recognize that
their physical bodies are an integral part of the whole person that God created them (in His
image) to be. Each one is a unique and gifted individual that God desires to use. Keeping our
bodies strong and healthy will better allow us to serve the Lord.
Things to know:
A) PE uniforms:
a. Children’s World PE cloths must be worn on all PE days.
b. Shirts must be tucked in.
c. Shorts cannot have pockets for safety reasons.
d. All PE clothes must be in good repair. No stains, holes, writing or torn hems
please.
B) Shoes for PE must be athletic tennis shoes.
a. Your child’s shoes must be well fit and able to be secured snuggly by laces or
velcro so that they do not fall off when running or come off when kicking a
ball.
b. Socks must be worn daily. Occasionally we do activities without our shoes on
and that require the students to have socks on.
C) Hydration is extremely important!
a. Students are allowed to bring a water bottle specifically for PE.
b. Tip: Freeze ½ the bottle overnight and fill with cold water in the morning.
This will keep it cold for them during the PE hour.
c. Only water is allowed in the gym for PE. Colored sports drinks stain the floor
if they are spilled.
D) Injuries and Exemptions from participating in PE
a. A parent note, email or a phone call to excuse a child from PE activities.
If there is not an apparent, visible injury and no note, your child will be
asked to do as much as they are capable of doing that day. A doctor’s
note is required for an injury lasting longer than 7 days.
b. If your child sustains a serious injury during PE we will call the parent to
inform them of the injury and agree upon treatment options.
VCS Physical Education Grading
There are three areas by which your student will be graded in PE (33% for each area):
1) Skill Development/Effort - Each day your child will be given a grade based on their
ability to master the skill/activity that is presented to them. Even if they struggle or
don’t like that particular activity, they must try their best to master the basic motor
skills and knowledge of that activity. I may occasionally ask you to work at home to
improve basic motor skills like jumping rope, catching, overhand throwing or skipping,
etc.
2) Attitude - As we participate and learn to compete we must also work hard to keep the
right attitude. 1 Cor. 9:24 says “Do you not know that in a race all runners run, but
only one receives the prize? Run in such a way as to take the prize. Everyone who
competes in the games trains with strict discipline. They do it for a crown that is
perishable, but we do it for a crown that is imperishable,” We play HARD,
COOPERATE and play FAIR, ENCOURAGING ONE ANOTHER.
3) Aerobic Conditioning/Training - In order to honor God with our bodies, we train so
that we will be ready and able to do whatever God calls us to do. The students are
graded on their effort and ability to do age appropriate jogging and other aerobic
activities in developmentally appropriate time limits. We also do anaerobic activities to
improve our conditioning that may include sprints, agility, jumping rope, strength
training, etc.
If your child has any special needs relating to physical activity, please contact me with specific
guidelines that will help enhance the PE experience for your child.

received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God
with your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19 -20)
DRESSING OUT FOR PE
The middle and high school students will be required to wear dress uniforms all
week long and change in and out of their PE clothes during PE class.
1) Students will check in as a class for attendance. Be on time, it can affect your grade.
2) After attendance students will be dismissed to the locker rooms to dress out for PE: 5-7
minutes at the beginning and end of each PE period to dress out for PE and then change
back to their dress uniforms and freshen up before going to their next class.
3) Each student will be assigned a cubby in the locker room to use for the year. All toiletry
items and even fresh PE clothes for the week can be kept there during the week and taken
home at the end of the week to be washed.
4) There will be an immediate 2 week ban as a minimum for any locker room horseplay:
turning out the lights, harassing other students, water play, etc.
There are 5 locking bathroom stalls if your child prefers privacy when changing. There are 5
shower stalls with curtains that can also be used for changing. Please come to me immediately
with any concerns. Immature behavior will not be tolerated in the locker rooms.
Thank you so much for your cooperation. It will make a drastic difference throughout the rest of
the school day.
VCS PE TOILETRY BAG AND BASIC HYGIENE
All students will be asked to bring and keep a toiletry bag/bin in their PE cubby with the
following items:
1) Travel size shower gel/soap
2) Washcloth
3) Towel (hand size is enough unless you plan to shower)
4) Deodorant
5) Clean PE Clothes for each PE day
6) Personal products
Strong aromas such as AXE or other good smelling stuff has a tendency to aggravate those with
allergies and asthma. Please do not bring or use any body sprays - deodorant should be
sufficient. Thank you for being considerate of those with allergies.
It only takes a minute or two to wash up and feel refreshed in clean clothes as you go to your
next class. The students will find a routine that works for them to be quick and clean after PE.

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL, VENICE CHRISTIAN STUDENTS AND FAMILIES! SO MUCH TO LEARN, SO LITTLE TIME!
I am very pleased to have the opportunity to teach at VCS. Some will have had me as a Spanish teacher last year. Others may be taking Spanish for the first time. I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight a few policies and procedures to ensure a successful year for all of us. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS/GRADING Class Participation – Sitting back and warming a seat is NOT an option. Students are
learning to read, write AND speak the language. Learning any new skill requires practice. This can only be accomplished if students take an active role. Sports events need spectators. Education requires us to be active participants. I will try to make my classes as fun and as interactive as possible so that students will want to get into the action. Students will be graded in this area through class work assignments (both written and verbal) and being prepared with the necessary materials daily.
Homework – I do not believe that work outside of class should be overwhelming. It
should be used to reinforce new material and to assess understanding. I don’t believe in busy work so I’ll keep assignments to a minimum IF I see that students are “getting it” through class work, quizzes and tests. Homework will be due by the next class period after it has been assigned. I will give students more time to complete longer assignments and projects.
Quizzes – WEEKLY evaluations of this type will be given. These will focus on topics and materials that have been covered during the week. Unless otherwise announced, these will take place on Fridays.
Tests (Spanish I & II) – These will be given at the end of each chapter. Students will be given plenty of notice about when these will take place so that they have sufficient time to prepare, and frequent review is part of that preparation process.
Projects – Students will be given ample notice regarding a due date for these
assignments. A rubric with detailed instructions for completion will be provided for each project. I will assign these periodically throughout the semester as a means of reinforcing knowledge, stimulating creativity and addressing the needs of tactile learners.
Policy for handing in late work – There will be a 10-point penalty per day for late
work up to 4 days. After 4 days no work will be accepted, and the student will receive a grade of 0 for that assignment.

Spanish I and II Midterm and Final Exams – These will consist of two-parts. The
first part will be an oral interview that lasts approximately 5-minutes in length. Each one will be conducted individually, and a sign-up sheet for a specified time will be posted closer to the end of each semester. The second part of the exam will be written and will be given to the class as a whole. It will cover all material from each semester. Review sheets will be provided to assist the students in preparing for these exams.

1. Come to class with required supplies daily. 2. Have an orderly system for homework, quizzes/tests, notes and handouts.
TAKE NOTES AND ASK QUESTIONS! 1. Don’t rely on your memory when new information is presented. 2. Don’t rely totally on the textbook. A teacher may have a different way of
explaining a new concept that makes more sense that will aid in understanding. 3. If you are still confused, let your teachers know! Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
PLAN AHEAD AND REVIEW NIGHTLY! 1. When given a long-range assignment, don’t procrastinate. Budget your time to
get the job done. Keeping a calendar is a good way of keeping track of important due dates.
2. Reviewing notes and/or flashcards for even a short time each night helps to firmly plant the information and aids in identifying concepts that are confusing.

PTF Fun Facts
PTF is free of charge. Every
parent or guardian of a VCS
student is automatically a
member of VCS PTF.
Every parent at VCS is required
to complete 20 hours per year.
PTF events are a great way to
complete hours.
The Used Uniform Sale is a
great place to find uniforms for
your student as well as sell the
ones that no longer fit.
Every class has a Room Mom
who will help communicate PTF
information to the families.
Through the PTF, each class
takes turns providing an
appreciation lunch for the
teacher once a month. It is
always a special treat for the
teachers.

are involved with school activities
and the lives of their children.
Venice Christian School PTF exists to
bridge the gap between the school
and the parents. We provide many
opportunities throughout the year
to help you get involved in your
child’s education and invest your
time into our school. PTF sponsors
many fun events that bring the
faculty and the families together for
fellowship, learning and community
building. Please join us as we work

“strong in the Lord and in His

team provides prayer support
for the teachers, students and
specific needs of the school.

2. Room Parent Team – This team
serves as the extra set of hands
for the classroom teacher. They
assist with field trips, parties and
teacher lunches. Lourdes Fuller
leads this team
3. Events Leadership Team - This
team helps coordinate and staff
the events at the school like
Muffins for Mom and Donuts
with Dad. Several parents are
needed to lead this team. Email

With your help and the dedication of our School Volunteer Box Tops Coordinator, VCS has earned more than $5,000 through Box Tops over the years. Please drop off your Labels for Education UPC labels. VCS earns points that can be redeemed for Arts, Athletics and Academics merchandise.

The most obvious benefit is the advertising and recognition businesses receive by partnering with VCS to provide monetary or in-kind gifts or services. VCS students and staff are blessed by program enhancements when businesses partner with us. This program is designed to help both the business owner and VCS to simplify and streamline the giving process with this annual program.
ONE request, ONE application and benefits that last ALL YEAR long!
We have done the calculations and this is an easy way to support all the special events at VCS with one annual contribution rather than having several students or VCS reps approach businesses throughout the year. The following steps are all it takes to become a Community Business Partner with VCS:
1) Simply fill out and return the Community Business Partnership application.
2) Enclose your contribution with your application. 3) Submit a business card with a black and white logo with your application. What are the benefits? A partnership with Venice Christian School will provide a variety of advertising options that will be displayed throughout the school at our events like the Victory Run, PTF meetings and communitywide events such as the Family Fun Fest. A partnership also helps to build our scholarship services to VCS students. Even if you don’t own a business, you may know someone who does and might be interested in supporting VCS, please have them contact the office at 941-496-4411.
