Dear High School parents and students,

“Let the Mothers go out to play --

This summer the High School will not have a summer reading project. Attached is a list of books that we suggest for reading. Additional and updated book reviews for young adults can be found at the Christianity Today (https://www.christianitytoday.com) and World magazine (https://world.wng.org) websites. These two sources are trustworthy in their critiques. Upon their return to school, during the first two weeks, students will be able to take Accelerated Reader quizzes for points.

Their children are waiting for them.” (Dads are waiting, too.)

How VCS Screens Books for Objectionable

Material and Language

(Thank you to HCA for crafting the Bob Jones

summary for use.)

As students reach the middle and high

school reading levels, language, violence and

romantic entanglements can become problematic

for teachers, parents, and students. The three

criteria used to screen books and literature

considered for inclusion on the summer reading

list are specified in the essay, “Classroom

Censorship” from Bob Jones University which

explains the criteria as follows:

1. Gratuitousness – is the representation of evil

purposeful or is it present for its own sake?

2. Explicitness – Is the representation of evil, if

purposeful, present in an acceptable degree? Or is

it more conspicuous or vivid than the purpose

warrants? Is the censorable material too potent to

serve well as a negative example?

3. Moral tone – is evil presented from a

condemning perspective? Is it made to appear

both dangerous and repulsive? What is the

attitude of the work toward it? Will the censorable

material be presented emphatically as a negative

example? Will what it portrays appear dangerous

and repulsive regardless of the author’s intention?

As always, you know your student and what they

should read. These diverse titles are picked

carefully, thoughtfully and prayerfully for summer

reading. They are not all Christian works of

literature. Some are good books (well written).

Some are great books (well written with

important, impacting ideas that have passed the

test of time). Christian themes are recognizable,

even if that was not the author’s intent. These

books talk of the fears, hopes, joys, frustrations

people experience. They are books about people

not only as they are but as they can be. Students

should examine, analyze and understand themes,

characters and plots using God’s word to light

their path of discovery.

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL, VENICE CHRISTIAN STUDENTS AND FAMILIES! SO MUCH TO LEARN, SO LITTLE TIME!

I am very pleased to have the opportunity to teach at VCS. Some will have had me as a Spanish teacher last year. Others may be taking Spanish for the first time. I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight a few policies and procedures to ensure a successful year for all of us. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS/GRADING Class Participation – Sitting back and warming a seat is NOT an option. Students are

learning to read, write AND speak the language. Learning any new skill requires practice. This can only be accomplished if students take an active role. Sports events need spectators. Education requires us to be active participants. I will try to make my classes as fun and as interactive as possible so that students will want to get into the action. Students will be graded in this area through class work assignments (both written and verbal) and being prepared with the necessary materials daily.

Homework – I do not believe that work outside of class should be overwhelming. It

should be used to reinforce new material and to assess understanding. I don’t believe in busy work so I’ll keep assignments to a minimum IF I see that students are “getting it” through class work, quizzes and tests. Homework will be due by the next class period after it has been assigned. I will give students more time to complete longer assignments and projects.

Quizzes – WEEKLY evaluations of this type will be given. These will focus on topics and materials that have been covered during the week. Unless otherwise announced, these will take place on Fridays.

Tests (Spanish I & II) – These will be given at the end of each chapter. Students will be given plenty of notice about when these will take place so that they have sufficient time to prepare, and frequent review is part of that preparation process.

Projects – Students will be given ample notice regarding a due date for these

assignments. A rubric with detailed instructions for completion will be provided for each project. I will assign these periodically throughout the semester as a means of reinforcing knowledge, stimulating creativity and addressing the needs of tactile learners.

Policy for handing in late work – There will be a 10-point penalty per day for late

work up to 4 days. After 4 days no work will be accepted, and the student will receive a grade of 0 for that assignment.

Spanish I and II Midterm and Final Exams – These will consist of two-parts. The

first part will be an oral interview that lasts approximately 5-minutes in length. Each one will be conducted individually, and a sign-up sheet for a specified time will be posted closer to the end of each semester. The second part of the exam will be written and will be given to the class as a whole. It will cover all material from each semester. Review sheets will be provided to assist the students in preparing for these exams.

BEHAVIORAL STANDARDS/CONDUCT In order to ensure a productive learning environment that leads to academic success, it is crucial that students adhere to an appropriate code of conduct founded in both the Golden Rule and the Biblical commandment, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Students should: Refrain from talking when the teacher is instructing, when others are speaking, or

during any type of evaluation Raise one’s hand if wishing to speak Take proper care of assigned materials (textbooks, workbooks, etc.) Show the proper respect for teachers and fellow students Arrive ON TIME for class each day to avoid disruption TIPS FOR LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (AND JUST ABOUT ANY SUBJECT) GET ORGANIZED!

1. Come to class with required supplies daily. 2. Have an orderly system for homework, quizzes/tests, notes and handouts.

TAKE NOTES AND ASK QUESTIONS! 1. Don’t rely on your memory when new information is presented. 2. Don’t rely totally on the textbook. A teacher may have a different way of

explaining a new concept that makes more sense that will aid in understanding. 3. If you are still confused, let your teachers know! Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

PLAN AHEAD AND REVIEW NIGHTLY! 1. When given a long-range assignment, don’t procrastinate. Budget your time to

get the job done. Keeping a calendar is a good way of keeping track of important due dates.

2. Reviewing notes and/or flashcards for even a short time each night helps to firmly plant the information and aids in identifying concepts that are confusing.

THE EFFECTIVE HABITS THAT YOU PRACTICE AS STUDENTS WILL CARRY OVER INTO ADULTHOOD.

LET’S HAVE A GREAT 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR TOGETHER!

Venice Christian School Parent Teacher Fellowship

PTF Fun Facts

PTF is free of charge. Every

parent or guardian of a VCS

student is automatically a

member of VCS PTF.

Every parent at VCS is required

to complete 20 hours per year.

PTF events are a great way to

complete hours.

The Used Uniform Sale is a

great place to find uniforms for

your student as well as sell the

ones that no longer fit.

Every class has a Room Mom

who will help communicate PTF

information to the families.

Through the PTF, each class

takes turns providing an

appreciation lunch for the

teacher once a month. It is

always a special treat for the

teachers.

Why PTF?

Educators tell us that students

are more successful when parents

are involved with school activities

and the lives of their children.

Venice Christian School PTF exists to

bridge the gap between the school

and the parents. We provide many

opportunities throughout the year

to help you get involved in your

child’s education and invest your

time into our school. PTF sponsors

many fun events that bring the

faculty and the families together for

fellowship, learning and community

building. Please join us as we work

together to raise our children to be

“strong in the Lord and in His

mighty power.” (Ephesians 6:10)

EASY WAYS TO SUPPORT VENICE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

Earn cash for Venice Christian School through everyday activities: buying groceries, shopping online and making purchases with a credit card. Clip Box Tops from hundreds of participating brands and turn them in to your classroom teacher to participate in class contests. With your help and the dedication of our School Volunteer Box Tops Coordinator, VCS has earned more than $5,000 through Box Tops over the years. Please drop off your Labels for Education UPC labels. VCS earns points that can be redeemed for Arts, Athletics and Academics merchandise.

Community Business Partnership Program There are many benefits to building a relationship between local schools and businesses. The most obvious benefit is the advertising and recognition businesses receive by partnering with VCS to provide monetary or in-kind gifts or services. VCS students and staff are blessed by program enhancements when businesses partner with us. This program is designed to help both the business owner and VCS to simplify and streamline the giving process with this annual program.

ONE request, ONE application and benefits that last ALL YEAR long!

We have done the calculations and this is an easy way to support all the special events at VCS with one annual contribution rather than having several students or VCS reps approach businesses throughout the year. The following steps are all it takes to become a Community Business Partner with VCS:

1) Simply fill out and return the Community Business Partnership application.

2) Enclose your contribution with your application. 3) Submit a business card with a black and white logo with your application. What are the benefits? A partnership with Venice Christian School will provide a variety of advertising options that will be displayed throughout the school at our events like the Victory Run, PTF meetings and communitywide events such as the Family Fun Fest. A partnership also helps to build our scholarship services to VCS students. Even if you don’t own a business, you may know someone who does and might be interested in supporting VCS, please have them contact the office at 941-496-4411.

New Amazon Program Enables

Shoppers to Easily

Donate to VCS

AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support our school every time you shop, at no cost to you. When you shop at AmazonSmile you’ll find the exact same convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to your favorite charitable organization. To shop at AmazonSmile simply go to smile.amazon.com from the web browser on your computer or mobile device. You may also want to add a bookmark to AmazonSmile to make it even easier to return and start your shopping at AmazonSmile. On your first visit to AmazonSmile, you need to select a charitable organization (Venice Christian School) to receive donations from eligible purchases before you begin shopping. It will remember your selection, and then every eligible purchase you make on AmazonSmile will result in a donation.
