Sunday of Divine Mercy John 20:19-31

"Put your finger here and see my

hands, and bring your hand and put

it into my side, and do not be

unbelieving, but believe." After the

Resurrection, the wounds of Christ

take on a whole new meaning.

Whereas they had originally been a

sign of the tragedy and pain of the

crucifixion, they now became a sign

of triumph and power over physical

death as well as spiritual death--sin.

When Jesus invites Thomas to

touch his wounds, he is allowing

Thomas to experience this reality

for himself. Thomas doesn't just

look at the nail marks; he personally

encounters them. And then, he

believes.

This is a powerful image for the

mercy of Christ. The suffering he

endured on the cross was not just a

distant symbol for us to admire. The

fact that Jesus suffered for us means

that our suffering now has

somewhere to go. Our pain, our

battle with sin, our struggle to truly

believe in him, all of this can be laid

within the wounds of Christ and

healed. When we unite our own

wounds to those of Christ, when we

allow ourselves to encounter the

wounded but glorified Christ, we

are able to move beyond our own

troubles. We get to share in the

victory and truly experience his

peace.

A Note From Our New Pastor, Fr. Devdas

I am pleased to be back, as some of you know. I come from a family of seven siblings—three boys and four girls. I am fifth in the order. My mother died when I was 5 years old and my father died seven years ago. We are farmers and grow mainly cash crops. As a child I learned to plow, grow rice, vegeta-bles, etc. My brothers are still with the same profession, but my nephews and nieces who moved out of the community for education and employment, are slowly losing the root.

I was born in a mixed religious family. My dad was a Hindu before his marriage and my mom was a Catholic. My aunt—my dad’s sister—was married to a Hindu priest. I was close to my uncle, and as a

child I used to assist him during weekends in his Hindu religious worship. In my heart, I did not believe in the Hindu reli-gion nor enjoyed participating in the rituals. I went along with it because I loved my uncle and wanted to help him. Therefore, as a child, I was not much involved in church activities because of my affiliation with Hindu religion.

My early association with Hindu religion, rituals, and practices made me question my belief system and brought me closer to the Church and my faith. I truly found my faith when I was in high school. It felt right to me; it felt like I belonged to something greater and was serving a higher purpose. I soon became an altar server and a year later secretary to the altar server’s association. Being the secretary to the altar server’s association I was given the responsibility of training and men-toring new altar servers.

When I was studying my 10th grade, the local diocese organized a summer camp—come and see program—for high school boys considering priesthood. I joined the summer camp without my dad’s permission. Being born and raised a Hindu, I knew my dad would not give me permission to join the seminary or understand my passion for the priesthood. I liked the atmosphere at the summer camp which was peaceful, prayerful, and respectful. The camp gave me time to pray and discern my vocation. After the summer camp, I decided to join the seminary to become a priest and I was also supported and men-tored by my high school principal, a priest—a simple and holy man. His humility, piety, and love for God and the poor interested me further in joining the priesthood.

I joined the Archdiocese of Delhi and became a priest on May 14th, 1994. I worked one year as an associate pastor in an urban parish. The parish had a vibrant high school youth program and I was given the responsibility of mentoring the group. I loved the assignment and from that group two of them joined the priesthood. A year later, I was appointed as the Director of Catholic Charities until 2001. It was not something I wanted to do as a priest, but I took it up out of obedience and also because I had a Masters’ degree in Social Work. It was very challenging to work with over 200 staff and raise money for programs. Though the work was challenging, I enjoyed it, especially working with the poor and less-privileged people in Delhi.

I came to the United States to do my Ph.D. at the University of San Diego. My doctoral program was Leadership and Management studies—Management of Nonprofit Organizations. During my studies at USD, I served at Santa Sophia Parish in addition to working as a hospital chaplain. I enjoyed my stay and work and I was also so fortunate to have worked under three wonderful priests at Santa Sophia. I am now so pleased to come back to Santa Sophia as the pastor.

I love my priesthood. It is a great joy and honor celebrating the Holy Eucharist with the faith community, administering Sacraments, hearing confession, listening, and comforting people, etc. As a priest, it is my great joy of helping people to grow in faith and experience and recognize God’s love and goodness for them. My experience of working with people helped me grow in my faith and drawn me closer to God. This is my 21st year of my ordination to priesthood; I am humbled and profoundly thank the Lord for the gift of my vocation to priesthood and the opportunities to serve God’s holy people.

DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and; fervent priests;

For your unfaithful and tepid priests; For your priests laboring at home or

Abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests;

For your lonely and desolate priests; For your young priests; For your dying priests;

For the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you

The priests dearest to me; The priest who baptized me;

The priests who absolved me from my sins; The priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me

Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; The priests who taught and instructed me;

All the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way

(especially……………..….) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,

And bless them abundantly in time and in Eternity,

Amen

Since our group has dwindled, we rely on the generosi-ty of our parishioners to help make our bake sale a success. Baked goods can be dropped off in Prendergast Hall after the 4:30 pm Mass on Saturday, April 11th and before and after the Sunday Masses at 8:00 am & 11:00 am. We greatly appreciate your generosity from our last sale. If you are in-terested about our group and ways that you can become more involved, we would be happy to hear from you. Please contact Lorraine at (619) 309-5609 or Irene at (619) 670-1433.
