WARNING

To avoid loss of control of processfluid and subsequent personal injury orproperty damage caused by bursting ofpressure-retaining parts, be sure thecylinder pressure does not exceed 80psig in high cycle-rate, fast strokingspeed three-way valve applications.

In three-way valve applications where the actuatorfully strokes at a frequency of once per minute or fast-er, and the stroking speed is rapid (less than 0.5 sec-onds per stroke), there is a possibility that the stemcan fracture at the plug if the actuator cylinder pres-sure is greater than 80 psig. This can cause loss ofcontrol of process fluid. Consideration should be giv-en to the use of high-strength, fatigue-resistant stemmaterials in these applications.

This problem appears to be application sensitive, inparticular, water quench applications in steel millswhere stroking speed and cylinder pressure werehigh. There have been no reported occurrences ofthis type of failure in other applications.

Type 470, 471, 475, and 478 piston actuators are in-cluded in this instruction manual. Type 472, 473, and474 piston actuators are covered in separate instruc-tion manuals. Options are indicated by a suffix to thetype number: -5 for manual handwheel, -7 for 4-1/8inch (105 mm) maximum travel, -8 for clevis stem con-nector, and -16 for 8-1/8 inch (206 mm) maximumtravel.

SpecificationsRefer to tables 1 and 2 for specifications of the Type470, 471, 475, and 478 piston actuators. See the ac-tuator nameplate for information about a specific ac-tuator.

InstallationWhen an actuator and valve are shipped together as acontrol valve assembly, the actuator is normallymounted on the valve. Follow the valve instructionswhen installing the control valve in the pipeline. If theactuator is shipped separately or if it is necessary tomount the actuator on the valve, perform the ActuatorMounting procedures in this instruction manual. Forinformation on mounting valve positioners, refer to theappropriate valve positioner instruction manual.

If a Type 471 actuator is being installed, the cylinderloading pressures should be supplied through a 4-waysolenoid valve or a switching valve. The bottom side ofthe piston is pressured through the connection at thelower side of the cylinder (key 2, figures 3, 4, 5, 6, and7). The top side of the piston is pressured through theconnection in the cylinder cover (key 31, figures 6 and7).

Reduce maximum allowable thrusts by 10 percent for actuators without positioners.

CAUTION

To avoid damage to actuator parts anddifficult operation of actuator hand-wheels, open the bypass valve beforeusing a handwheel.

If repeated or daily manual operation is expected, theactuator should be equipped with a manual hand-wheel. To manually move the piston rod with the hand-wheel, first open the bypass needle valve (key 185,figure 8), and place the handwheel pointer in the neu-tral position and insert the locking pin in the sleeveassembly. Then turn the handwheel in the selecteddirection as indicated on the wheel.

Actuator MountingIf an actuator is purchased separately for field installa-tion on a control valve, mount it on the valve and se-cure it in place with the yoke locknut. Actuators with a5-inch (127 mm) yoke boss are secured to the valvebonnet with eight bolts rather than a yoke locknut.

The stem connector should then be made up to clampthe actuator stem and valve plug stem together to pro-vide the proper valve travel. This procedure is outlinedin the Stem Connector Assembly procedures of thisinstruction manual.

The control valve should be located where it will beaccessible for servicing. Room should be left aboveand below the control valve to permit removal of theactuator and valve plug.

Key numbers indicated refer to figure 3 for Type 470,figure, figures 4 and 5 for Type 475, figure 6 for Type478, and figure 7 for -16 (8-1/8 inch or 206 mm maxi-mum travel) constructions.

Stem Connector Assembly

CAUTION

To avoid damaging the seating sur-faces, do not rotate the valve plug whileit is seated. Also avoid damage to thevalve plug stem by careful use of toolsduring travel adjustment.

Incomplete engagement of valvestem and/or actuator stem in the stemconnector can result in stripped threadsor improper operation. Be sure that thelength of each stem clamped in the stemconnector is equal to or greater than thediameter of that stem. Do not loosen thecap screws when the stem connectorhas spring or loading pressure force ap-plied to it.

Direct-Acting (Push-Down-to-Close)Valves 1. With the valve assembled and the actuatormounted, make sure the valve plug is in the closedposition, and the actuator is at the top of its stroke. Then screw the two stem locknuts all the way onto thestem thread and place the travel indicator disk (if any)on the stem locknuts.

2. Keeping your hands away from any moving parts, pressure the actuator until the piston rod moves downfrom the top of its stroke the specified valve travel.

3. Attach the stem connector, clamping the piston rodto the valve stem. With the stem locknuts, raise thetravel indicator disk to the stem connector.

4. Cycle the actuator to check availability of desiredtotal travel and that the valve plug seats before the

Page 5: 13481981

4

actuator contacts the lower travel stop. Minor traveladjustments can be made by loosening the stem con-nector slightly, tightening the locknuts together, andscrewing the stem either into or out of the stem con-nector with a wrench on the locknuts. If the valve stemcannot be turned, as with a bellows seal bonnet, re-make the stem connection to achieve the desired trav-el.

5. Once the total travel is adequate, tighten the stemconnector securely, lock the stem locknuts against theconnector, and adjust the indicator scale on the yoketo show correct valve plug position.

6. Provide a gauge to measure the pressure to theactuator. Make a final adjustment of the actuator or itspositioner to set the starting point of valve travel andto obtain full travel for the given instrument range.

Reverse-Acting (Push-Down-to-Open)Valves 1. Keeping your hands away from moving parts, pres-sure the actuator to move the piston rod to the ex-treme upward position then reverse loading pressureto lower the piston rod approximately 1/8 inch (3 mm).

2. Pull the valve stem up to seat the valve plug.

3. With the two cap screws, attach the stem connec-tor to the piston rod and valve stem making sure thestem connector fully engages the piston rod threads.

4. If there is a travel indicator disk, raise it to the stemconnector and tighten in position with the stem lock-nuts. The indicator disk or pointer should show thevalve to be open with the piston at the bottom of itsstroke. If it does not, loosen two screws (key 19) andshift the travel indicator scale (key 20) to indicateOPEN.

5. Cycle the actuator to check availability of desiredtotal travel and that the valve plug seats before theactuator contacts the lower travel stop.

6. Once the total travel is adequate, tighten the stemconnector securely, lock the stem locknuts against theconnector, and adjust the indicator scale on the yoketo show correct valve plug position.

Provide a gauge to measure the pressure to the ac-tuator. Make a final adjustment of the actuator or itspositioner to set the starting point of valve travel andto obtain full travel for the given instrument range.

Bypass AssemblyThe bypass is furnished as shown in figure 9 onlywhen a handwheel actuator is specified. The bypassallows the pressure to equalize on either side of thepiston, so that the manual actuator can be used toposition the valve.

Flow through the bypass tubing is controlled by anangle needle valve (key 185), which is operated manu-ally. This valve should be closed when the actuator isbeing used to operate the valve.

Principle of Operation

With Positioner (Types 470, 475, and478)Refer to figure 2. The pneumatic output signal from acontroller or instrument is piped to the bellows of theType 3570 positioner. An increasing input signal to theType 3570 results in unbalanced pressures acting onthe actuator piston, forcing it to move down. A de-creasing input signal to the Type 3570 causes reverseaction to take place, resulting in unbalanced pressuresforcing the actuator piston to move upward.

A feedback arrangement prevents over-correction andensures a definite position of the piston for a specific

Page 6: 13481981

Type 470, 471, 475, & 478

5

input signal, thus giving stable and accurate responseto changing conditions.

For more detailed information on the Type 3570 Posi-tioner, refer to the Principle of Operation section in theType 3570 Instruction Manual.

Without Positioner (Type 471)The piston moves as air pressure is loaded on oneside of the piston, and unloading on the other side.Because no positioner is furnished, a loading device, such as a 4-way switching valve, must be installed. Aloading device is not furnished with the actuator.

MaintenanceActuator parts are subject to normal wear and must beinspected and replaced when necessary. The frequen-cy of inspection and replacement depends on the se-verity of service conditions. Because of the careFisher Controls takes in meeting all manufacturing re-quirements (such as heat treating and dimensionaltolerances), use only replacement parts manufacturedor furnished by Fisher Controls.

WARNING

Avoid personal injury from sudden re-lease of process pressure or uncon-trolled process fluid. Before starting dis-assembly:

Disconnect any operating lines pro-viding air pressure to the actuator. Besure the actuator cannot suddenly openor close the valve.

Use bypass valves or completelyshut off the process to isolate the valvefrom process pressure. Relieve processpressure on both sides of the valve.Drain the process media from bothsides of the valve.

 Vent the power actuator loadingpressure.

Use lock-out procedures to be surethat the above measures stay in effectwhile you work on the equipment.

Key numbers indicated refer to figure 3 for Type 470,figure, figures 4 and 5 for Type 475, figure 6 for Type478, and figure 7 for -16 constructions.

1. Bypass the control valve. If positioner is not used,go to step 5. If positioner is used, shut off all pressure

lines to the positioner then remove all tubing lines (cyl-inder, instrument and supply) from the positioner.

2. Loosen the four cover screws on the underside ofthe positioner and remove the positioner cover.

3. Disengage the range spring by unscrewing thespring retainer from the piston rod extension.

4. Loosen the two caps screws that hold the posi-tioner to the cylinder. When removing the positioner,do not lose the small O-ring that is used in the air pas-sage from the positioner to the top of the cylinder.

CAUTION

Do not use wrenches or other tools di-rectly on the valve stem. Damage to thestem surface could result in subsequentdamage to the valve packing.

5. Remove the stem connector (key 6) and the pistonrod boot (key 24) used to protect the lower end of thepiston rod.

6. Remove the socket head cap screws that hold thecylinder (key 2) to the yoke (key 1).

7. Insert a screwdriver in the two slots on the loweredge of the cylinder casting and pry the cylinder loosefrom the yoke. Remove the cylinder, being careful notto mar the cylinder wall.

8. The piston (key 3) and piston rod (key 4) will comeout with the cylinder. The piston can then be removedby forcing it out the open end of the cylinder.

9. Unscrew the upper and lower seal bushings (keys7 and 8), one in the upper end of the cylinder and theother screwed into the upper end of the yoke.

10. With the unit disassembled, inspect all parts forexcessive wear and defects. Replace all worn O-rings.Lubricate (key 238 or equivalent) as indicated on theassembly drawings. Apply sealant (key 239 or equiva-lent) as indicated on the assembly drawings.

When reassembling the actuator after the piston rodextension (key 5) has been removed from the pistonrod (key 4), clean the threads of the piston rod exten-sion thoroughly and apply Loctite 242 or equivalentthread sealant to the threads. Tighten the piston rodextension securely to a torque of 150 lbfft (203 Nm).This torque is approximately equal to the torque thatwould be developed by placing a force of 150 poundson the end of a one-foot wrench, 75 pounds on theend of a two-foot wrench, etc.

11. To inspect the clevis stem connector assembly inthe Type 478 or -8 assemblies, remove the clevis boot(key 190, figure 6) which covers this assembly. Theclevis stem connector assembly can be disassembledby removing the E-ring (key 189, figure 6) and pullingclevis pin (key 188, figure 6).
