07 06 JEWELLERY JEWELLERY THE GOLDEN TOUCH Clogau was launched in 1994 by William Roberts, who acquired the historic Welsh gold mine five years earlier with the intention of turning it into a tourist attraction. After discovering there was some gold left, the mine reopened until 1998 and a small stockpile of gold was amassed. Soon after, the jewellery line was launched with each piece containing a touch of the rare Welsh Clogau gold. Clogau has an intrinsic history with the royal family. The Queen Mother used Clogau gold for her wedding ring, and in doing so set the tradition for subsequent royals to use Welsh gold for their wedding bands. The Kensington Key Locket (£139, page 43) calls on a traditional Victorian romantic style and takes its inspiration from the 19 th century palace gates of Kensington Palace (made famous as the home of Queen Victoria, Diana, Princess of Wales and the future residence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge). With its regal heritage, this exquisitely detailed necklace from Clogau is the perfect commemorative piece for celebrating HRH The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this summer, or simply a beautiful souvenir of a trip to London. BREAKING THE MOULD At the height of the New Romanticism trend in the mid-1980s, Simon Carter was spending most of his free time in the stylish shops on King’s Road in Chelsea, south London. Propelled by his interest in vintage accessories, Carter took a life-changing career turn when he created a pewter brooch and sold it to one of the area’s innovative jewellery stores. The designer went on to launch his eponymous company in 1985, which focused on unconventional cuinks as an alternative to the largely conservative ones available to men at the time. From jewel-encrusted starfish to crystal-encased malachite acorns, Simon Carter’s pieces were original and new. Watches, shirts, suiting and accessories followed, and the brand developed into a global menswear and accessories brand. It was a natural progression for the company to introduce women’s jewellery, and Carter’s fashion-forward pieces were met with rave reviews. Crystal-embossed skull pendants, mermaid necklaces and edgy fly brooches are mixed in with gorgeous mother-of-pearl owl pendants (£45, page 43), glittering platinum-plated crystal heart studs and eminently tactile haematite bracelets with heart charms.
