The Composer is Dead!September 23–24, 2014 10:30 am & 12:00 pm | Uihlein HallFrancesco Lecce-Chong, conductor Rick Pendzich, actor

Excerpts from

Mussorgsky: Night on Bald Mountain

Grieg: Holberg Suite

Brahms: Second Serenade

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No . 4

Bernstein: “Mambo” from West Side Story

The Composer is Dead by Nathaniel Stookey, with text by Lemony Snicket

There’s dreadful news from the concert

hall — the composer is dead! In this

perplexing murder mystery, everyone

seems to have a motive, everyone

has an alibi and nearly everyone is a

musical instrument . As with Benjamin

Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, your students will

be introduced to each member of the orchestra…as the inspector

interrogates the entire symphonic arrangement regarding their

whereabouts at the time of the crime . One thing is for sure —

nobody is leaving the concert hall until the mystery is solved!

This is the second year that the Milwaukee Symphony will partner with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music

Institute to bring the Link Up program to our community . Link Up pairs orchestras across the country

with students in grades 3–5 at schools in their local communities to explore orchestra repertoire

through a year-long hands-on music curriculum . Composers create musical movement using motifs,

melodic direction, steps and leaps, dynamics, and orchestration . Through the Link Up repertoire,

hands-on activities, and a culminating performance, students will discover ways in which the

orchestra moves!
