Do you remember the Roman emperor, Constantine?
~ He built Constantinople and its many Christian churches around 330 A.D.!
~ 1,000 years after Constantine, the Byzantine Empire remained a center of Christianity
~ In the 1300s, Anatolia (presentday Turkey) was settled by people called " Turks ." The Turks were Muslims from Asia.

The TURKS made Constantinople their city... it became part of the TURKISHLED EMPIRE.
The Turks rallied behind a leader named OSMAN.
In honor of their leader, people called themselves "Osmanlis " which later morphed into " Ottomans ."

THE BATTLE FOR CONSTANTINOPLEConstantinople put up a FIGHT before falling to the Ottomans....
*Constantinople had the strongest defense of any city in Europe at the time
On May 29, 1453, the Ottomans fired heavily on the walls of Constantinople. Before the morning was over, Constantinople was in Ottoman hands.
Christian rulers of Europe now had Muslim neighbors to the east.

Ottoman victory at Constantinople in 1453 ended the Byzantine empire and began a new era of Muslim rule in part of Europe.
The Ottomans renamed the city of Constantinople, calling it Istanbul.
The Ottoman empire was governed by leaders called sultans.
During Suleyman's rule Istanbul drew products and peoples from across the empire. NonMuslims were allowed to worship freely.
