46th ANNIVERSARY

PACELLI EVENT CENTER

145 LAKE MERCED BLVD

DALY CITY, CA 94015

April 7, 2018

Welcome to our first ever

fashion show for our an-

nual PMSNC fundraising

anniversary dinner. Hu-

manitarian designer Gia

Galicia will headline the

event. Gia loves doing

charity fashion shows

that raise money for

charitable causes. She

created the Share+Give

Initiative to help make

the world a better place

by raising funds for

breast cancer victims and

initiatives supporting

children in foster care.

Designers Amy Lai, Ro-

lando Carlin, Adrine

Karapetyan, Eva Mejl,

Coco Melody (Puey

Quinones) will also be

featured. Marilen

Bernardo, a longtime sup-

porter of PMSNC is one

of 3 Co-Chairs for the

event. We also have a

special performance by

comedian Rex Navar-

rete. Navarrete is origi-

nally from San Francisco,

but has gained a massive

international underground

following over a decade

of both live shows and on

the Internet with his now

infamous “Maritess vs.

The Superfriends” anima-

tion. Navarrete has per-

formed his brand of com-

edy all across the nation

touring numerous col-

leges, universities and

community events.

“Fashion with a Mission”

will help support our an-

nual Philippine Medical

Mission, our community

outreach program, and our

medical student scholar-

ships. Thank you all for

your tremendous support

in helping us care for our

community.—Dr. Cajator

46th ANNIVERSARY EDITION

PMSNC’s 33rd annual

medical mission was held

in Santa Barbara, Iloilo,

Philippines on January 22

-26, 2018. The medical

mission was requested by

Mayor Dennis Superficial

and assistance for local

planning was provided by

Annie Hayag, MD, re-

tired pediatrician from

San Diego, CA. 175 vol-

unteers answered the call

to service, including 39

physicians, 2 dentists, I

optometrist, 9 allied

health, 54 nurses, 48 sup-

port & 22 student volun-

teers. 5095 indigent resi-

dents of the city received

direct services. Surgical

services were provided at

the Western Visayas

Sanitarium & the Iloilo

Doctors Hospital. Sur-

gery was performed on

228 patients: 40 major

(thyroidectomies, mastec-

tomy, repair of cleft pal-

ate, release of burn stric-

tures, herniorrhaphies),

139 minor, and 49 oph-

thalmology procedures

(39 cataract surgeries).

Outpatient services were

provided at the gymna-

sium across from the

Western Visayas Sanitar-

ium. 4,867 patients re-

ceived consultations, lab

testing, ultrasound imag-

ing, medications, health

education, dental care,

and refraction & prescrip-

tion eyeglasses. Several

patients requiring surgery

could not be accommo-

dated and were referred

to the City Mayor’s of-

fice.

Continuing medical edu-

cation was provided to

volunteers & local physi-

cians with lectures pro-

vided by Sudesh Ratte-

halli, MD on Graves

Ophthalmopathy and by

Janice Manjuck, MD on

Methamphetamine

Abuse. A team of CPR

certified providers led by

Gerardo Caritan, RN

gave training & lectures

on the Basics of CPR,

Review of Neonatal Re-

suscitation, Fundamentals

& Essentials of ACLS in

Trauma & Critical Care.

Basic Life Support

classes were led by Rosa-

lie Simon-Tang, PNP and

provided to physicians,

nurses, medical & nurs-

ing students at the West-

ern Visayas Sanitarium,

Iloilo Mission Hospital,

University of San

Agustin, St. Paul Univer-

sity, Iloilo Doctor’s Col-

lege of Medicine & West-

ern Visayas State

University College

of Medicine.

All services, medi-

cations & supplies

were provided free

of charge because

of funding by our

generous donors,

volunteers, and

annual fundraisers.

All medical volun-

teers had to be ap-

proved by the Pro-

fessional Regula-

tory Commission of the

Philippines for special

temporary licenses. The

medical mission opera-

tion also required ap-

proval by the Philippine

Department of Health . A

special application with

the Philippine Academy

of Ophthalmology was

also required and

Dr. Karen Francia, Presi-

dent of the Western

Visayas Ophthalmology

Society helped support

the application for POA

approval. Screening and

selection of patients was

done by our ophthalmol-

ogy team led by Stephen

Post, MD. At the conclu-

sion of the mission week,

we were able to donate

surgical supplies, medica-

tions & a set of CPR man-

nequins to the City of

Santa Barbara through

Mayor Superficial. Indeed,

our medical mission was

able to fulfill its goal of

helping our needy families

in Santa Barbara, Iloilo.

Despite challenging cir-

cumstances, several resi-

dents of Santa Barbara are

now pain-free, no longer

blind or disfigured. Several

have received helpful in-

formation to improve their

health and many can now

provide life-saving CPR &

several more will be able

to receive CPR training.

Providing medical care to

those in need has truly

been inspirational and ful-

filling. Many of the volun-

teers hope to return to help

again next year.

The PMSNC Scholarship Award

program was created in 1986

by Dr. Lourdes Olivares-

Agacaoili during the presidency

of Dr. William Candelario.

Scholarships are awarded at

our annual PMSNC Fundraising

Dinner and are given to four

Filipino-American students who

meet the following qualifica-

tions: 1) attending a medical

school in Northern California;

community related activities.

2) showing need for financial

assistance; 3) demonstrate

exceptional talent; and 4) par-

ticipate in humanitarian and

community related activities.

In 1990, then president Dr.

Jose Rodriquez established

the PMSNC Scholarship En-

dowment Trust Fund which is

funded by members and do-

nors. The objective of the fund

is to earn financial returns that

will help our society have a

sustainable grant-giving capac-

ity. In 1993, one scholar

award was named the Dr.s.

Lourdes Agcaoili & Felix Ag-

caoli Memorial Award, in honor

of one of our illustrious

PMSNC founders and presi-

dent in 1982. In 2004, a sec-

ond scholar award was named

in honor of Dr. Jose Rodriguez.

Additional awards include the

Presidential Scholar Award

and the PMSNC Scholarship

Committee Award.

screens which yielded 3 with

abnormal results who were

referred. There were 49 who

had BMI evaluations which

found 21 with need for nutri-

60 adults and 10 children. 6

persons were found to be with

low function and referred to

their primary care physician.

Each year the society has a
