It gives me huge pleasure to present the programme for our 16th festival, which, once again, features some of the world’s most eminent musicians. Returning artists look forward to performing in one of their favourite venues, to one of the most appreciative audiences they are likely to encounter anywhere, and those here for the first time are likely to join the ranks of musicians asking to return at the earliest opportunity.

Making their festival debut is the Freiburger Barockorchester, widely acknowledged as one of the world’s finest orchestras. They are joined by Vox Luminus (here in 2016) for a performance of Monteverdi’s masterpiece, the Vespro della Beata Vergine 1610. We also welcome for the first time, violin & piano duo, Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien; Septura, a groundbreaking brass ensemble; and acclaimed Baritone Roderick Williams, making his long overdue debut. Our final new face in 2017 is pianist Nikolai Lugansky, described by Gramophone as “the most trailblazing and meteoric performer of all”.

In addition to the stellar line up above we see the return of an equally brilliant group of regulars; our president Paul Lewis, Steven Isserlis, Richard Goode, The Academy of Ancient Music & Richard Egarr, The Takacs Quartet, Jack Liebeck, and renowned voice teacher David Pollard.

2017 is the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Festival Academy Orchestra. It’s hard to believe that the idea that Tom Hull and I hatched a decade ago has grown into what is now regarded as one of the UK’s leading training orchestras. Its great success is down to the huge commitment and countless hours of work put in by Tom & Ruth, and to the fact that most of the professional members return every year, giving the project a sense of continuity.

Having held ticket prices for six years we have had to increase them this time as, apart from the ongoing rise in general costs, we have the most expensive festival ever in terms of artists’ fees. Increases have been kept as small as possible, and student tickets remain a nominal £1. There is nowhere else in

the UK where students can hear such superb musicians for such a sum.

If you have not signed up for one of the priority booking schemes previously I hope you will consider doing so this year. Increasingly, it is the only sure way of obtaining reserved seating for the most popular concerts.

We have decided to keep to the traditional postal system for the Patrons’, Friends’ & Season priority booking periods, and for those who like to send their General booking forms in early. As each period opens forms are processed in the order in which they were received, so please send them in ASAP.

As soon as the priority and early ‘General’ bookings have been processed we will then activate the online & telephone booking system.

NB - unlike most other organisations we levy neither a booking fee nor transaction fee with our online system.

I hope you will agree that the 2017 programme is one of the most exciting to date and I look forward to seeing many of you next May.

Julian Lloyd WebberAs usual I am delighted to endorse the great educational work done by Chipping Campden International Music Festival.

This year they continued their work with young voices in local primary schools which involved around 300 students working for an intensive three week period, and also presented composition, brass, and wind workshops in secondary schools as well as a concert for early years children.

One of the most exciting developments in 2015 was the formation of the Festival Youth Academy Orchestra, and in August 2016 they ran the course for a second time with acclaimed violinist Nicola Benedetti as soloist in two sell out concerts. Given sufficient funding being available, the Youth Academy will now be a regular feature of their educational calendar.

The festival’s priority for 2017 is to extend its support of orchestral playing in the secondary school sector.

Julian Lloyd Webber, Patron of Education

Paul LewisA very warm welcome to the 2017 Chipping Campden International Music Festival.

As ever, this year’s festival brings some of the world’s most exciting musicians to this wonderful spot in the Cotswolds, offering the chance to hear world-class performances in the most charmingly beautiful setting. The Festival Academy Orchestra will once again be in residence for a series of thrilling performances under the direction of its inspiring conductor Thomas Hull, complementing a wonderfully varied programme of chamber music and recitals for those looking for more intimate musical experiences.

The Chipping Campden International Music Festival has distinguished itself over the years as an event which presents performances by established artists of the highest quality, while at the same time nurturing talented musicians at the outset of their careers. In a world where commercialism and short term gain can often take priority over substance, the values that have always been promoted by this festival are to be cherished more than ever.

We all look forward to seeing you for two weeks of inspiring music making in May.

Weekday Lunchtime Concerts1.05pm – 2.05pmTuesday 16th – Friday 19th & Tuesday 23rd & Thursday 25th

Given by students and recent graduates from leading music colleges

Details of the concerts will be on the web site when confirmed and emailed to all on our database. Please try to attend these lunchtime concerts; they are given in a relaxed atmosphere and the quality of performances is exceedingly high.

Tickets: £5 on the door or £3.50 per concert if all 6 concerts are booked in advance on the festival booking form. We are not able to sell advanced tickets for individual lunchtime concerts. For students in full time education entrance is free. Schools are very welcome to arrive unannounced but it is helpful if we know in advance if a large groups are coming.Sponsored by Richard & Jane Bennett

Education and the OrchestraThe festival is seriously committed to music education. As well as the lunchtime concerts, we run workshops and coaching sessions in local schools given by experienced practitioners. The ‘Chipping Campden Festival Academy’ orchestra has become an extremely significant part of the festival. The Academy is formed anew every year (although many of the professionals are regular members) and each desk has an advanced student or recent graduate playing alongside an experienced Pro. This gives the young artists an invaluable insight into what playing in a professional orchestra entails. For details about applying as an advanced student or recent graduate please email Charlie Bennett - [email protected]

Additionally, for a week in late August of 2016, we ran our second Festival Youth Academy Orchestra course. This was based on the same formula as the May festival

orchestra but in this incidence the May Academy members returned to became mentors to secondary aged students. The orchestra gave two magnificent concerts in St James’ church, and the soloist in both was the acclaimed violinist Nicola Benedetti. For details about applying as secondary school aged student for the August 2017 course, please email Charlie Bennett - [email protected] For more information on the May Festival Academy Orchestra and the Youth Orchestra summer course visit www.ccfao.com

If you are involved in local pre-school, primary, or secondary education and would like details of workshops we can offer please email Jessica May - [email protected]

We also have a large, and growing, Festival chorus that meets every week and gives three concerts per year. If you are interested in joining please email Richard Stephens - [email protected]

Subsidised tickets for studentsWe are delighted to offer free access to students for the weekday lunchtime recitals and we charge a nominal £1 for tickets for the evening concerts. If you know schools that may be interested in attending do put them in touch with us.

Prior to Steven’s opening recital of the 2017 Music Festival, he will be with us this evening to discuss his new book.

Robert Schumann was far ahead of his time, not least in his attitude to children and young people; his ‘Advice for Young Musicians’, originally created to accompany his famous ‘Album for the Young’, remains as relevant today as when it was written. Steven Isserlis adds his own extensive commentary to Schumann’s words of wisdom. The advice is by turns practical, humorous, and profound, making this volume a must for all aspiring musicians of all ages and standards.

The book will be on sale this evening or you can order ahead of time from:

Candlelit concert

Steven Isserlis Cello

I was particular delighted when Steven agreed to give the opening concert of this year’s festival. He is without question one of the finest cellists in the world and to hear him perform three Bach suites in the wonderful setting and acoustics of St James will make this a very special evening indeed, made even more so perhaps as they will be played by candlelight. In between the suites Steven will perform some miniatures by the great Hungarian composer, György Kurtág. Kurtág’s music has an immediate appeal and emotional intensity that is rare in contemporary music. Steven’s recording of the Bach suites was Gramophone’s Instrumental Disc of the Year and Critic’s Choice at the Classical Brits; he is also one of only two living cellists featured in Gramophone’s Hall of Fame.

The Freiburger Barockorchester Orchestra has a twenty-five year history of acclaimed performances. Within a few years of its student beginnings, it became an internationally sought-after orchestra, performing in the most important concert halls and opera houses of the world. The magnificent Belgian choir, Vox Luminus, join them for this performance of Monteverdi’s great masterpiece. I have long wanted to present the Vespers at the festival and the coming together of these two ensembles, combined with the 450 anniversary of Monteverdi’s birth provided an opportunity too tempting to ignore. We expect an enormous demand for tickets for this concert so please book early.

“When pianists get into their seventies, some get

tired, others are assailed by physical problems, and a

among the latter....” International Piano, April 2016

What can one say about this great musician? Whatever superlatives one employs, ultimately they fail to do justice to his artistry. His profound intellect, deep respect for the text, superb technique, and unparalleled palette of tone colours, puts Richard amongst a very select group of pianists, whom one could probably name on the fingers of one hand. The only mystery perhaps is that in the UK people aren’t queuing around the block to obtain a ticket for his recitals. Those in the know will overcome any obstacle to attend one of Richard’s concerts. If you miss one of the highlights of the festival, don’t say I didn’t alert you to his presence.

In their own words the Academy “aims to energise baroque and classical music. And to do it, we get back to the style and spirit in which this music was first performed. We revel in the expressive power of old instruments — flutes made out of wood, trumpets without valves, strings woven from gut. Takacs String QuartetThe multi award winning Takács Quartet is now entering its forty-second season, and fully deserves the accolade that many people ascribe to it, of being the world’s finest quartet. Renowned for the vitality of its interpretations, the New York Times recently lauded the ensemble for “revealing the familiar as unfamiliar, making the most traditional of works feel radical once more.” In May 2012, Gramophone Magazine announced that

the Takács Quartet was the only string quartet to be inducted into its first Hall of Fame, along with such legendary artists as Jascha Heifetz, Leonard Bernstein and Dame Janet Baker. For their fourth appearance at the festival the quartet present a programme that gives us early, middle and late period Beethoven, culminating with the sublime Op 127, the only one of the late quartets that has never to date been played at the festival.

DAVID POLLARD

A Saturday 20 May 11.00am - ends approx 2.00pm

The master class morning has become a popular addition to the festival, and I am delighted that David Pollard, a friend since our RCM days, has agreed to return in 2017 to take the class. He will work with three advanced students. David is widely acknowledged as one of finest and most sought after teachers in Europe, credited as the long-term teacher of many of the UK’s best-known and most successful singers. His students, past & present, can be heard in major roles in all the world’s international opera houses. Competition successes amongst his students have included wins

in all the major British competitions (The Kathleen Ferrier Competition, the Richard Tauber Prize, the Maggie Teyte, The Royal Overseas League, the International Mozart Competition, Cardiff Singer of the World and the Young Welsh Singer of the Year). He also taught the acclaimed baritone Roderick Williams, who appears twice in week two of the festival.

As always this will be a fascinating morning for both voice and instrumental students alike, or in fact anyone who enjoys witnessing teaching at the very highest level.

For our president Paul Lewis’ first appearance at the 2017 festival he gives us a beautifully balanced programme which, apart from the Beethoven, features composers he is not so readily identified with. Bach’s 1st Partita has been likened to early Mozart by Richard Goode with its “crystalline, euphonious and limpid grace.” Paul then plays the great Op.7 sonata. Sometimes known

as the Grand Sonata this is, apart from the ‘Hammerklavier’, the longest of Beethoven’s 32 sonatas. After a group of Chopin he plays Weber’s 2nd sonata. This spacious and lyrical work is one of the composer’s finest creations. We always struggle to meet the demand for tickets for Paul’s concerts so please return your forms ASAP.

There are many prized recordings of the Beethoven sonatas from

past masters and current artists. But if I had to recommend a single complete set, I would

suggest Mr. Lewis’s distinguished recordings.

It gives me enormous pleasure to welcome these two outstanding musicians to the festival. Alina Ibragimova is one of the most accomplished and intriguing violinists of the younger generation, illustrated by her prominent presence at the 2015 BBC Proms, which included a concerto with a symphony orchestra, a concerto with a baroque ensemble and two late-night recitals featuring the complete Bach partitas and sonatas, which commanded capacity audiences. Cédric Tiberghien’s flourishing international career takes him to some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, Kennedy

Centre in Washington, Royal Albert Hall, Wigmore hall, the Salle Pleyel in Paris, and Salzburg’s Mozarteum. This beautifully varied programme will show the versatility of these superb artists. The glorious Brahms Op.100 is well known to many concert goers, the Schumann perhaps less so. After giving the premier of the latter, with Clara Schumann at the piano, the great violinist Joseph Joachim said, “I consider it one of the finest compositions of our times in respect of its marvellous unity of feeling and its thematic significance.”

Septura Brass Ensemble

I am very excited to introduce Septura to festival audiences. They are rapidly gaining a reputation for innovative and imaginative programming and the members of the ensemble hold principal positions in the London Symphony, Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony,!Basel Symphony and Aurora

By creating a canon of transcriptions, arrangements and new commissions for brass septet, a brand new classical configuration, Septura aims to re-cast the brass ensemble as a serious artistic medium. I’m convinced that tonight’s programme of early music will sound quite magnificent in the St James setting.

The final piano recital of the 2017 festival is given by one of the finest living pianists, and someone I having been trying to get to the festival for many years. Multi award-winning pianist Nikolai Lugansky regularly appears at some of the world’s most distinguished festivals, including, La Roque d’Anthéron, Verbier, Tanglewood and Ravinia, as well as appearing with all the great orchestras of the world. The Tchaikovsky Seasons is a set of 12 pieces depicting the months of the year, in many of which, the influence of Schumann can be detected. And then, alongside three of Chopin’s most wonderful larger scale pieces, Nikolai plays a group of Mazurkas. In these pieces we are privy to some of Chopin’s most intimate and heartfelt feelings about his homeland.

His dazzling technique is exceptionally

secure, balanced and beautifully articulated. Amid today’s keyboard

showboaters his seriousness comes as

a blessed relief… a true inheritor

of a profound keyboard

For the final concert of 2017 our President returns to perform Grieg’s much loved piano concerto. Composed when he was only twenty four it remains one of his most well known works and, arguably, is one, if not the, most popular piano concertos ever written. Despite the fact that, to some extent, it suffers from over familiarity, it is a magnificent piece. It requires great rapport between soloist and conductor, something it will certainly have with tonight’s artists. The festival comes to a close with the only Brahms Symphony not yet performed by the Academy orchestra.

PATRONSThis is our top level of Festival supporter. Business logos or individual’s names will appear in the souvenir programme book (unless you wish to remain anonymous) and there will be a ‘Patrons & Friends’ champagne reception during the festival. Patrons enjoy a three-week priority booking period before general bookings open.Cost - a minimum donation of £500. FRIENDS Over the years the list of ‘Friends’ has grown enormously and we were finding it increasingly hard to accommodate all ticket requests. So in 2016 we instigated two levels of ‘Friends’ category, rather than the alternative proposal, which was to limit the number of tickets ‘Friends’ could purchase for any one concert. Gold Friends get a two-week priority booking period and Silver Friends a one-week priority period. All names will appear in the programme book (unless you wish to remain anonymous) and you

will be invited to the ‘Patrons & Friends’ Champagne reception.Gold Friends - a minimum donation of £300 Silver Friends - a minimum donation of £100.

SPONSORS OF AN ORCHESTRAL CHAIR AND FRIENDS OF THE ACADEMY ORCHESTRAThe idea of creating the ‘Academy’ orchestra was to give talented young musicians the opportunity to work alongside the finest professionals. The project is now recognised as one of the leading ‘side by side’ training orchestra in the UK. To ensure the highest standards of quality the orchestra comprises 50% experienced orchestral musicians and 50% ‘Academy’ trainees. Each string, woodwind, and brass ‘desk’ seats one professional and one ‘Academy’ trainee together. During the festival the CCFAO performs with soloists of international standing and although these concerts normally sell out, the cost of presenting them greatly exceeds the box office take. Typically we lose about £20,000 on

these three concerts so, even with the generous support of the Orchestra’s main sponsor, Cutts of Campden, we still have to provide a substantial subsidy. Whilst the festival remains happy to take on this commitment, the more financially viable we can make the orchestra, the more funds we will have for other educational work.

The ‘sponsor a chair’ scheme helps raise funds for this project. Generous donors have already committed to sponsoring our conductor and leader for 2017 and beyond but we are still looking for people prepared to sponsor either a professional player (£1,000) or an Academy member (£450). Or you can become a ‘Friend of the Academy Orchestra’ for a minimum donation of £100. Chair sponsors will get a three-week priority booking period for the three orchestral concerts and ‘Friends’ a one week priority period. All will be acknowledged in the programme unless they wish to remain anonymous. You will also be invited to a special reception after the Thursday orchestral concert.

BOOKING SYSTEMEnvelopes are dated as they come in and filed as ‘Patrons’, ‘Friends’ ‘Season’, or ‘General’ bookings. As each period opens forms are processed in the order in which they were received. Patrons’ & Friends’ season applications will be processed in the appropriate priority period. General season tickets will be processed just prior to other General bookings.

So, regardless of the category your form is in please return it ASAP. Forms should be posted to our office in the Old Police Station. Hand delivered post can be left in the Festival post box on the ground floor next to the lift.

NB: Please do not leave forms or make any enquiries at Toke’s Food & Drink (formerly Bennetts Wines) as the staff have no access to information or the facility to hold booking forms. Also, we respectively ask you not to make any festival enquiries on our home number. We hold no booking information at home so it is ultimately frustrating for both you and us.

BOX OFFICEBecause about 80% of tickets are sold during the early postal booking periods, a physical box office is only open during the festival itself. At this time tickets will be on sale from our office on the second floor of the Old Police Station. The box office is normally open from 10am-4pm each festival day except Sundays. However, it is dependent on volunteers, so there may be odd moments when it is not open. If closed please leave forms in our post box on the ground floor next to the lift.

For general enquiries call 01386 849018 or email [email protected]

Extra booking forms can be downloaded from www.campdenmusicfestival.co.uk

Once priority bookings and early general bookings have been processed we will activate the online & telephone booking system.

TERMS AND CONDITIONSTickets are dispatched on receipt of full payment. Tickets are not refundable, except in the case of cancellation of a performance. We make every endeavour to ensure that works performed are as advertised, but artists reserve the right to alter their programmes and no refunds can be made on the basis of a different programme from the one advertised. Tickets are transferable but student tickets can only be passed on to an adult if the excess sum is paid to the festival.

If you purchase a season ticket and find you cannot attend on certain nights please try to pass them on to a friend or return them to us for re-distribution. We do not offer a refund on returned season tickets but it is always sad to see empty seats at a sell-out concert.

REFUNDS POLICYWe accept tickets for resale only when performances are completely sold out. If we succeed in reselling tickets, an administration charge of £5 will be made per pair of tickets. Please contact the box office 01386 849018
