October 2019 Presidents Report Hello Members, What a busy 12 months we have had. I have included a list of our activities for the past year in the newsletter and I am sure you will agree the committee have oered something for everyone. The AGM was such a wonderful day and I was so pleased to see so many of our members attend. Julie Adamson was a delight and we are talking to Julie about the possibility of providing quilt evaluations as part of our May exhibition. It was a thrill for me to present our first Life membership award and a Honorary membership in what I see as part of our 30th birthday celebrations. Please be aware that as part of our budget findings for 2018 /2019 it was passed by members present that a $2 entry fee is now payable for both our regular Saturday Gatherings. Our slow stitching weekend with Judy Newman was well received by those that attended and many of us are working enthusiastically on our new projects. Hopefully we may see some of the quilts started in our Exhibition next year. Our Charity quilt for the Exhibition is well on the way. Thanks to those that came along to the quilt making day last Tuesday. It was a small but dedicated group and good progress was made. A big thank you to Tristesse for the amount of preparations she had done in advance of the day. I am pleased to say that our UFO weekend in Lakes Entrance is booked out for the first time. This is evidence that the committee continues to oer events that are attractive to members. There will be NO Sit and Sew for October at The Hub. Not long now until the big reveal for the Technique of the Month quilt. I have managed to source Room 7 at the Hub so that we can run a two day workshop to get started on putting the Quilt together. This weekend is free of charge to Members. Please fill in the registration form provided if you are interested in attending. I have had a wonderful 4 weeks away in South America and feel excited and refreshed for the next 12 months of Riviera Quilters. Thank you to those on the committee who stepped in and helped while I was away. Our Christmas gathering will be here before we know it but before then lets enjoy the activities organised for the next couple of months. Happy stitching, Jen. Christmas Party Please Save the Date for our Christmas Party. Weather permitting it is hoped that we can celebrate the end of 2019 with a Hanging of the Quilts @ The Hub Saturday December 7th Daylight savings starts this Sunday 6th October at 3am. WELCOME TO RIVIERA QUILTERS .Riviera Quilters was formed by a group of patchworkers in East Gippsland in 1989.

The initial membership was 30 and currently we have over 100 members. 30 years later members still enjoy many happy hours together as they share or pass on knowledge, not only at our meetings but also at our weekend retreats and at workshops. Our Annual General Meeting, held as part of

our August gathering, is always well supported and is a rewarding time for members as we hand over a donation to our approved charity. Our guest speaker for the day is always interesting and well informed. Our Christmas

meeting is a special time for members and our Biennial Exhibition is a time to appreciate all the beautiful work done by our members.

Riviera Quilters meet at “ East Gippsland Community & Educational Hub”,

Cnr Dalmahoy & Service Streets, Bairnsdale. Meetings are held on the first and third Saturdays of the month, excluding January.

On the first Saturday of each month, Rooms 2&3 are open from 11am - 3:30pm. A short formal meeting is held at 1 pm and is generally followed by a Show and Tell of member’s work.

Our library is open to members on these days from 11am-1pm.On the third Saturday of the month, Rooms 2&3 are open 10am-3:30pm. There is no formal meeting on

this Saturday, and members are free to bring their sewing machines. We often have workshops on this Saturday which will be advertised via our bi-monthly Newsletters and group emails.

Charity Quilt making days have been introduced for 2019 and will be held midweek. Details in our newsletters.

Presidents Report. 2018 /2019 Hello Members,

The last 12 months has been such a rewarding time for me.Our membership has grown from 87 members in August last year to 109. This is an increase of over 20%. A recent calculation would suggest that about 10% of our membership is over 80 years old however we have also seen our youngest member to date join at the tender age of 12. Last year Liz Traynor put together some technique workshops that were held as part of our Gathering days. In 2019 Liz offered to continue these as Technique of the Month workshops. These have been very well received with at least 20 members each month sitting in on the demonstrations. The blocks have been designed to form a quilt and the layout will be revealed in November. Aptly named 30 blocks for 30 years of Sewing and Friendship with Riviera Quilters, it is hoped that many of the quilts made will form part of our exhibition next year. Liz has kindly offered to donate the demonstration blocks to be used as our Signature quilt for our 30 years. A very apt conclusion to this wonderful initiative. Veronica introduced a pre set Hostess Roster this year and this has taken the pressure of trying to find volunteers each month. Thank you so much to all members who have donated their time to sit at the Welcome Table and just as importantly provide our Morning Tea. Thank you also to those who stay behind at the end of meetings to help with the housekeeping. Our Secret Pal program has once again been running thanks to Sandra Abell. The committee have been so supportive which has allowed me to implement the many activities that we have had over the year. The introduction of the mid week Charity sew days is something that I feel very passionate about. We started last year with the tray mats that were sewn for Meals on Wheels and Gippsland Lakes Community Health. This year Tristesse has helped me by sourcing patterns and fabrics and the end result is 4 wonderful quilts as well as two productive days sewing for the Days for Girls program. The VIEW club were very appreciative of our donation of a quilt to them and it is my hope that 3 quilts will be donated through Quilts of Valour later this year. In September we will start work on our Charity Quilt for the Exhibition in May next year.Twice a year up to 24 members share friendship and fun at our retreats in Lakes Entrance. We have established new traditions since the days of Coonawarra and we look forward to these weekends away.We have hosted a number of 2 day machine quilting classes with tutor Anita Ellis over the past 12 months. Anita and the Westalee Ruler quilting system has appealed to many quilters in the community and as a result we have had a number of participants join Riviera Quilters. Margaret Fraser has worked tirelessly to ensure these classes are filled. We also held a weekend Jelly Roll sew in September last year and this September we will welcome Judy Newman to East Gippsland for the weekend. Our 30th birthday celebration in February coordinated by Lorraine Knight was a wonderful day. 75 members past and present joined in and may memories were shared. May saw us host Victorian Quilters Autumn Gathering. Jenny Aitken was responsible for organising this event.I wish to thank Tristesse as Vice President for watching my back and Maxine for the wonderful job she does as Secretary and our publicity officer. Lorraine has kept our financial records in good order as attested by our auditor and Ann continues to keep our membership records which is a big job in itself. Each committee member has helped out in their own way and for that I sincerely thank them. I think we have made a great team.I have also had wonderful support from a number of members who have helped the committee when they can. You all know who you are and I thank youI am so proud to have been a member of this amazing group for over 25 years now.As President of Riviera Quilters I have enjoyed many happy hours working and playing alongside like minded people.I wish Riviera Quilters all the very best for the next year and hopefully for many years to come.Thank you.Happy Stitching.Jen Lawrence

August AGM GatheringSaturday 3rd August 2019 was the AGM of Riviera Quilters Inc.52 members and guests supported the day and it was lovely to see so many members. 6 new memberships were received.I am pleased to say that I am President for the next 12 months and nominations were received and accepted from all of the exisiting committee. Our chosen charity for the 2019 / 2020 year is Bairnsdale Riding with the Disabled.

It was my pleasure to award a Life Membership to Lois Davies and an Honorary Membership to Lorraine Knight. Both members have supported Riviera Quilters for the past 30 years.I was also pleased to receive a cheque for $216 from Peter and Lea Andrewartha from the Masonic Lodge as a thank you for our recent presentation. This money will be included in our funds for the charity

quilt program.

As part of the budget presented the members voted and accepted that there will be a $2 Admission fee as from September 2019 Gathering at both the 1st and 3rd Saturdays at the Hub. This money will be used to supplement the Trading Account funds which relies on membership subscriptions only.It was also accepted that Membership subscriptions will remain the same for the 2020 /

2021 year. Junior membership, under the age of 18, will be set at $15.

Julie Adamson from Victorian Quilters was our guest for the day and her talk on the valuation of quilts was very interesting and well received by members present. Jen Lawrence - President 2019 /2020

Life Membership - As written in our constitution.Life membership may be conferred upon a member who has rendered outstanding service and contributed to the growth of Riviera Quilters, has the respect of her /his peers and is a person of integrity.

Lois Davies.Attended the Inaugural meeting of Riviera Quilters in February 1989.Lois has been a loyal and active member of Riviera Quilters for 30 years. At the time of joining she would have been in her mid 50’s and has been a happy and positive influence on anyone who takes the time to get to know her. Many of us have called her Auntie Lo as a form of endearment for years. A regular at our gatherings and at the Coonawarra retreat weekends and always making an effort to be at our special milestones and events. She has not been afraid to dress up and have a bit of fun over the years. She is always thinking of ways to encourage the group along and has been in the ear of many Presidents over the years.Lois is a very worthy recipient of our very first Life Membership award.

Honorary Membership - As written in our constitution. This category is a “thank you” which allows the candidate to gain some public recognition so it must be considered with due diligence.Joining Liz Traynor Ula Sheather, Jenny Latimer, Merle McRae and Beatty Blennerhassett Lorraine Knight.Attended the Inaugural meeting of Riviera Quilters in February 1989.Lorraine is passionate about the art of Patchwork and Quilting. Not only an inaugural member of Riviera Quilters but also of Victorian Quilters. Lorraine was only in her 30’s when she joined Riviera Quilters and was part of a young enthusiastic group of young mothers who was very appreciative of the opportunity to get away for a couple of weekends a year to our retreat weekends. As a result Lorraine worked hard for Riviera Quilters to ensure the success of the group and that we continued to grow with access to tutors and classes within our local area. Lorraine and her husband Stephen have always made themselves available for the setting up and assisting in the running of many of our events including, of course, our exhibitions.Lorraine joins our 5 other Honorary Memberships recipients. It is pleasing that all ladies continue to have an active roll in Riviera Quilters.

He is in training for when a young man wants to marry a girl on Taquile, he is set with the task of knitting an extremely fine hat. This hat has to be presented to his future father-in-law. He will fill the hat with water and only if it doesn’t leak a single drop, he will consent to the marriage. Every man wears chullo (Andean style hat) on Taquile. It’s common around all Andean towns, but on Taquile it has more meaning to it. First, it’s a simple way to see who’s single or married. Single men can only wear a chullo with red and white colour. Full red is only for a married man.Taquile’s chullo has a distinctively long and narrow top that’s almost as long as the length of the hat. The direction of the extended top is the way to express your current state of mind. If the top is laid to the right side, it means he is happy and content. Left side indicates he’s worrying about something and wants to keep the problems away. The most common, especially when they are knitting, is the hat top to the back. This means they are busy.Making a metre-long waistband is another required skill for Taquile men. It contains the history of each family. Married men make the waistband with the wife’s hair. They believe that when they work they know their wife is supporting them. Fascinating - travel is great! Jen

As many of you are aware I have recently spent 4 weeks travelling around South America. Ecuador, including the Galapagos Islands as well as Peru and Bolivia.Craft work is taken very seriously as part of every day life so I was fascinated in their age old traditions. Sheep, Alpaca and Llama wool is used extensively and most women are proficient in weaving and women as well as men spin and ply the fleece ready for knitting and weaving while going about their daily life. It was not unusual to see the wool being spun onto the bobbins as they were walking around.. The many different traditional clothes are woven using local wool.

15th - 17th May 2020Riviera Quilters Inc. Biennial Exhibition

20 /20 VisionTo be held at Nova Hall Bairnsdale Primary School

West Bairnsdale.

Actual definition 20/20 vision is a term used to express normal visual acuity (the clarity or sharpness of vision) measured at a distance of 20 feet.

When most people hear the term 20/20 vision or find out they have 20/20 vision, they understand that to mean that they have perfect vision. Or maybe that they have the ability to see into the future.

The theme for our exhibition next year is 20/20 Vision. The challenge is to create a Quilted item ( a Quilted item consists of 3 layers - a top and batting layer and a backing) no larger than 1 metre cubed. If you wish to make a traditional quilt then no one edge is to exceed 1 Metre (39 inches). If you are up to the challenge to create a three dimensional item then it would need to fit inside a 1 Metre cube. What does 20 /20 vision mean to you?

Work has commenced on the Charity Raffle quilt.

Our next Charity Sew Day will be on Tuesday October 22nd.

If you would like to be involved we would appreciate if you could let us know - [email protected]

This will allow us to decide the venue.

Discussions are already underway to involve local school children in the Challenge. It is hoped that we may be able to offer a special viewing to interested schools on the Friday, including the presentation of student awards.

Exhibition OpeningThe committee have been discussing the

reality of continuing with the practice of an Opening Night.

It has been increasingly difficult over the past years to sell Opening Night tickets. This then leaves us at risk of running the

night at a loss after the costs of guest speakers and caterers are covered.

This results in less profits to donate to our chosen charity.

We are considering the possibility of having a formal opening on the Saturday,

including a guest speaker instead.Feedback would be appreciated. Please talk to President Jen or a

committee member. You may like to submit your ideas in

writing. Ultimately it will be a committee decision but we welcome your thoughts.

Slow Stitching with Judy Newman What a wonderful weekend of Slow Stitching we enjoyed with Judy Newman. 13 members enrolled for the weekend and most of us had chosen a pattern of Judy’s to work on prior to starting the class. This resulted in many techniques being demonstrated, not just the ones used in our pattern.Judy is a gentle, genuinely giving quilter who delights in sharing her techniques. She openly admits that there are many ways to achieve the finished project and that she is more than happy to share her way of doing it.

Judy is a Melbourne based professional Quilter who has recently been commissioned by Quiltmania to submit 15 quilts for her second book due out in 2021.Her first book, Quilts for Life made with Love, has 18 projects included. We have a copy in our library for anyone who is interested.

Judy has also released her booklet pattern Strafford Manor printed by Quiltmania this year. Betty has chosen this pattern so we will be able to follow her progress.

We also discovered that Judy’s daughter Emma is the proud owner of Queen of Fabrics at 387 Bay St, Brighton, Melbourne.

Thank you to all those who participated and we look forward to seeing your quilts evolve.

6 committee members joined the View Club on Wednesday 2nd October at their meeting at the Sporting and Convention centre for the drawing of their major raffle for this year. First prize was the quilt that we gifted them earlier in the year. A short presentation by each of the RQ members of our work followed the meeting and the View Club were very impressed and appreciative. It is hoped that the total profits from the raffle will reach $2000. This pays the way for 3 of the 4 students that the View Club support this year.

View club member Di Thomas with Tristesse, President Jen, Judy, Maxine and Margaret Fraser. Not sure what happened to Ann Sims but she was there too!
