In 1994, NBC was trying to find a show that could pull in ratings similar to the network’s mega-hit “Seinfeld.” Two writers pitched a show they saw as “Cheers” in a coffee shop. The show would go through several title changes, and the one that came closest to actually being used was “Friends Like Us.” Someone finally suggested just using “Friends,” and it proved to be the right title for the show.

Author Saul Austerlitz highlights aspects of the show’s creation from the staffing of the writers room to trying to figure out who was the best

fit to play the six main characters in “Generation Friends: An Inside Look at the Show That Defined a Television Era.” Two of the actors they wanted to hire were committed to other shows, and David Schwimmer, the actor they saw playing Ross from the beginning, wasn’t interested. The only known actress hired was Courteney Cox, who auditioned for Rachel, but wanted to play Monica.

Austerlitz has written a love letter for fans of the show to remember key moments from the 10-season run of “Friends” while also revealing the good and bad of how difficult it is to create a show, put it on the air and find lightning in a bottle.

Author takes deep dive into creation of TV show “Friends”

Today is Tuesday, Oct. 8, the 281st day of 2019. There are 84 days left in the year.

Today’s highlight in history: On Oct. 8, 1998, the House trig-

gered an open-ended impeachment inquiry against President Bill Clin-ton in a momentous 258-176 vote; 31 Democrats joined majority Republi-cans in opening the way for nationally televised impeachment hearings.

On this date: In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire

erupted; fires also broke out in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, and in several communities in Michigan.

In 1934, Bruno Hauptmann was indicted by a grand jury in New Jersey for murder in the death of the kidnapped son of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh.

In 1944, “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet,” starring Ozzie and Har-riet Nelson, made its debut on C-B-S Radio.

In 1945, President Harry S. Truman told a press conference in Tip-tonville, Tennessee, that the secret sci-entific knowledge behind the atomic bomb would be shared only with Brit-ain and Canada.

In 1956, Don Larsen pitched the only perfect game in a World Series to date as the New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 5, 2-0.

In 1982, all labor organizations in Poland, including Solidarity, were banned.

In 1985, the hijackers of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro killed Ameri-can passenger Leon Klinghoffer, who was in a wheelchair, and threw his body overboard.

In 1997, Scientists reported the Mars Pathfinder had yielded what could be the strongest evidence yet that Mars might once have been hos-pitable to life.

In 2002, A federal judge approved President George W. Bush’s request to reopen West Coast ports, ending a 10-day labor lockout that was costing the U.S. economy an estimated $1 to $2 billion a day.

In 2004, thirty-four people, most of them Israelis, were killed when sui-cide bombers blew up the Taba Hilton Hotel in Egypt.

In 2005, a magnitude 7.6 earth-quake flattened villages on the Paki-stan-India border, killing an estimated 86,000 people.

In 2017, Harvey Weinstein was fired from The Weinstein Company amid allegations that he was respon-sible for decades of sexual harassment against actresses and employees. Vice

President Mike Pence left the 49ers-Colts game in Indianapolis after about a dozen San Francisco players took a knee during the national anthem.

Ten years ago:An Arizona sweat lodge ceremony

turned deadly as some participants became ill and collapsed inside the 415-square-foot structure; three died. (Motivational speaker James Arthur Ray, who’d led the ceremony, was convicted in 2011 of three counts of negligent homicide and served 20 months in prison.) A powerful car bomb exploded outside the Indian Embassy in Kabul, killing 17 people. Romanian-born German writer Herta Mueller won the Nobel Prize in litera-ture.

Five years ago: President Barack Obama told top

military commanders at the Penta-gon that he was confident the U.S. would keep making progress in its fight against the Islamic State group. Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian man who was the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, died at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital

Dallas 10 days after being admitted. U.S. researchers Eric Betzig and Wil-liam Moerner and German scientist Stefan Hell were named recipients of the Nobel Prize for chemistry for giving optical microscopes much sharper vision than was thought pos-sible.

One year ago: President Donald Trump said he

had no plans to fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. The Nobel Prize in economics was awarded to American researchers William Nor-dhaus of Yale University and Paul Romer of New York University; Nor-dhaus was honored for his work on the economics of climate change, and Romer had produced research show-ing how governments can advance innovation. The New York Yankees lost by the largest margin in the team’s long post-season history, 16-1, to the Boston Red Sox; Boston’s Brock Holt became the first player ever to hit a single, double, triple and home run in the same post-season game. New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees became the NFL’s all-time leader in yards passing during a 43-19 win over the Washington Redskins.

much of today.” — Will Rogers, American humorist (1879-1935).

By MELANIE J. SIMS ASSOCIATED PRESS

Emeli Sande’s music has always leaned into the epic. Her clear, full voice powers sweeping anthems, most of which seem perfectly suited for bring-ing energy to momentous occasions (remember her at the 2012 Olympic Games?), but just as good for motivat-ing everyday people trying to make it through their every day.

“Real Life,” her third full-length album, finds the acclaimed British singer-songwriter-pianist keeping her good thing — playing motivator — going. And that’s good for fans.

That much seems clear from first single “Sparrow,” a goosebump-induc-ing battle cry for the overlooked and undervalued. “We’ve got magic in our bones, just like the stars we’re going to shine bright and golden,” Sande sings,

her voice full of resolve. She is great on the dreamy guitar

and drum-led “Love to Help”; endearing on album gem “Free as a Bird,” with its strings and soulful choir; and completely in her groove on “Extraordinary Being.” On that song she sings, “You are what God imagined. You are a true perfec-tion. Baby you’re made of stars. Don’t let nobody tell you different.”

It would be difficult not to believe her. But when Sande mixes her grandeur with the ordinary, the results sometimes feel mismatched. That’s the case with the title track “Real Life,” which finds Sande grappling with the day-to-day challenges of maintaining a long-term relationship. The lyrics are relatable, but the addition of a church organ and gospel choir feels like overkill.

Still, Sande rarely goes wrong, and overall “Real Life” is another solid album.

OLIVEOlive was eighty-seven and liked to sit by her wide bedroom window to watch birds and fluffy clouds; one day she counted eleven.Tilly, her aide, felt near and dear, giving Olive everything she needed so she wouldn’t live in fear. While her favorite tea was being poured Olive closed her eyes to pray, when suddenly a severe pain near her heart caused Olive to say, “Tilly, call for help!”Soon si rens f i l led the a ir, Olive slumped in her chair.Technic ians d id thei r best as Olive wondered if she was headed for her eternal rest.Ju s t t he n a s s he g a z e d upward toward her window, a beam of sunshine shone into her room, directed toward her heart. An angelic smile was clearly seen across her small, aged face, and her brown eyes focused with intense grace. She turned to Tilly and exclaimed, “God’s not ready to take me Home. Tell the technicians I want to be alone.”But one technician held Olive’s sha k y ha nd a nd s i ncere ly mentioned he was very glad, “You’re quite a special lady, such faith I’ve never seen.”All around us are sweet souls who every day look beyond the veil, l istening for God’s cal l, while others just look away and refuse to care at all.Say yes to a life that will last.

I receivea social security checkI worked forty-five years to get. When the money is freethat will be greatbut I’ll have to livetil I’m seventy-eight.

I’m not the loverthat I never was.Don’t quite as often catch a buzz.Though I’m not as nearlyafraid of the fuzzthere are still timesthat I am.

Look for my glasses,

look for my keys. The ol’ red inhalerwhen I start to wheeze.Look for my drinkwhen I’m manning the grill. When I get nervousI look for a pill.

My neck’s disappearing up into my chins.May have to start mea diet again.Cutting the hairthat grows from my ears.Quit cutting the couponsto take out to Sears.

Go to the doctorto check out my knee. The one that’s been hurtin’since ‘83.Sends the prescriptionto the local Rite Aidthat medicarewill help me pay.

Buried some neighbors, buried some friends, buried my kitties, hell, it never ends. Buried my pappyand my next of kin.Buried myselfin some bottles of gin.

Don’t take toall this modernity.Joined the old folks fraternity. To the pastwe all should take a bow.Seems to methe future is now.

PULL UP YOUR BIG GIRL BRITCHESPull up your big girl britches;no time to sit and fuiss. You got an important job to do,so wipe those tears; to work you must.

It’s a caretakers worldwhen a loved one gets sick. There is so much to do,you got to think quick.

Days and nights get mixed up;emotions run up and down. There is this, that, and then some;you just want a trip downtown.

But in the end, it was worth the memo-ries.You were strong, dependable, and stood tall.It meant a lot to the loved one dear;those big girl britches did it all.

If you need something to hold you over between the Mister Rogers documentary and the upcoming biopic starring Tom Hanks, a new coffee-table book of his quotes is now in bookstores.

“Everything I Need to Know I Learned from Mister Rogers’ Neigh-borhood” is small and short, with the cover featuring his signature red cardigan; an easy pick-me-up when the mood strikes to read wisdom in Mister Rogers’ voice.

“Mister Rogers was always focused on children, but his words are just as important and meaningful to adults,” writes Wagner, who also wrote “The Mister Rogers Parenting Book.”

Some quotes have added resonance for these times. In an era of hype, Rogers counsels: “You don’t have to do anything sensational for people to love you.” To anyone in despair about what surrounds them: “The more you grow into a helpful person yourself, the hap-pier you’ll find this world of ours is.”

Wagner cites several instances of Rogers leading by example. He encouraged people to not let the fear of making mistakes stop them from trying something new: “We watched him laughing and smiling as he awk-wardly mixed up dance moves with Ella Jenkins, dropped balls while jug-gling, and tried to use a Hula-Hoop.” By feeding his fish every episode, “he helped us see the importance of being consistent in our care — in caring for others who rely on us, and in caring for ourselves.”

He understood the desire in adults and children alike to feel “useful and needed,” Wagner writes. “He also helped us recognize our contributions, so we could feel proud of our efforts. ‘Passing things at the table or getting your mom’s pocketbook or briefcase when she asks for it — or giving some-one a hug when you think they need one. That’s being a caregiver. You see, you’re already a caregiver, by many things that you do.’”

The book also includes quotes and dialogue from the TV show’s other characters, which don’t always hit the mark. Some tend to run on, a rough transition from the spoken word to the page.

Then there are sweet gems like this that make the book worth keep-ing around: “Everybody’s different. And there are some things about everybody that are the same. That’s what’s wonderful. That’s what helps us to understand each other.”
